Coconut-Orange Cannabis Vegan ‘Egg’ Cream Will Satisfy All Cravings

In some alternate reality, our grandparents could have parked at one of those 1950s pharmacy/soda shoppes and ordered this very drink, with cannabis and all. Instead, we have to recreate this lost art and speculate on what could have been. Hand mixed sodas are for more than mixing with cocktails. They’re standalone treats that create sensory experiences and memories.

Egg Creams and Creamsicles are two hugely popular lunch counter drinks. One day I mixed the two ideas and haven’t looked back since. An Egg Cream is like a creamy soda, usually done with vanilla syrup, milk, and seltzer or club soda, a New York classic. This is just one ingredient away from a Creamsicle which is vanilla, orange, and milk.

The coconut version of a traditional dairy Egg Cream was born when trying to create a ‘from scratch’ coconut rum and cola, on duty at a tiki bar. It’s many iterations, including this creamy treat came about for patrons looking to skip alcohol for a round. When I made it for myself I snuck in a shot of weed tincture. It’s a foamy, bubbly, naturally sweet, with a velvety flavor that you will want to revisit.

Coconut Egg Cream, Orange Creamsicle Variation

Danielle Guercio 2012

  • 8 oz Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • 1 oz Cannabis Glycerin Tincture*
  • Seltzer
  • Ice

First, whip up some coconut cream by heating up one can of coconut cream with ½ cup sugar. Try not to overheat, simmer for 30 minutes until reduced. Remove from heat and stir in Vanilla and cannabis tincture. Put anything you don’t use in a squeeze bottle and refrigerate for coffee, cocktails, or on cereal, desserts, pancakes.

To make Egg Cream:

Put 2 oz fresh orange juice and 1 oz coconut cream in a cocktail shaker, seal tins and dry shake. Crack open tins and add ice, shake again until outside of tin is frosty. Open tins and strain mixture over ice in a tall glass, top with soda, try to make as long of a pour as possible for extra foam. Garnish with an Orange Peel and straw.

If you do want to add booze, I highly suggest something light like sake or soju. This way you won’t overpower the delicate flavor combo, and won’t interfere with the weed too much by downing a full serving of alcohol.

Something less spirituous like Nigori Sake you can use up to 3 oz, just shake with the juice/cream. White rum would be another good choice, but being stronger you’ll want to keep it at 1 oz max for optimal taste balance.

*To make Glycerin Cannabis tincture:

In an oven safe container double sealed with foil, decarboxylate 3.5 grams finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Put cannabis in a mason jar or vacuum sealed bag, pour over 2 oz vegetable Glycerin and seal tightly. Place in a water bath at just under boiling for 1 hour. Strain and keep contents in a sterilized container. Stores indefinitely in freezer.

You will probably make at least two more of these, hence the batched coconut cream. Whether you keep it virgin or want to add a splash of strong, this will surprise you with it’s simple elegance. Orange needs a new reputation, so let’s make orange juice again.
