Divorced Couple Battles In Court Over Precious Cubs World Series Tickets

The only thing worse than a bitter divorce is a bitter divorce between diehard Cubs fans who are fighting over tickets to the first World Series at Wrigley Field in 71 years.

The Associated Press reports that last week Nancy Riddle filed an emergency petition for the two tickets to Saturday’s Game 4, which are currently in the possession of her estranged husband, John Riddle.

According to his attorney, Michael Berger, John Riddle purchased Cubs season tickets in April, just before divorce proceedings began. Nancy Riddle’s argument for the emergency petition was that the Cubs, who haven’t won the World Series since 1908 and haven’t won the National League pennant since 1945, likely won’t make it back to the Series again anytime soon. Berger, a White Sox fan, begrudgingly took issue with that line of thought.

“Even if the Cubs lose this time, it is likely — regrettably — that they will be back to the World Series again soon,” he told the Associated Press.

Berger’s objections were for naught. After hearing arguments from both Riddle attorneys, Judge Marya Nega ruled that John Riddle must use his extra ticket to take the couple’s 12-year-old son to the game, which is a nice resolution, though he also has to buy his former wife a ticket of “comparable” value. As of this writing, such a ticket would cost him at least $1,800 and as much as $40,000 on StubHub.

At least the former couple can still agree that Bill Murray should sing every “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for the rest of the Series.
