This Week’s Music: Billie Eilish, Rosalia And Will Young

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s music features Billie Eilish’s much anticipated debut record, Will Young’s new single and Rosalia and J Balvin’s incendiary jam. Check them out.

Pop

Billie Eilish – bad guy

When introducing Billie Eilish you’ll always have to mention her age. The fact that she’s seventeen years old is completely embedded into her persona and artistry. Eilish shows a vocal range, depth and a give no fucks attitude that’s hard to find in her contemporaries, or even in musicians that have been around for much longer. Her debut album is an eclectic mix of styles and tones, made with the eagerness, clumsiness and intensity of a teenager. It opens with a recording of herself removing her Invisaling braces and cackling, setting the stage for the mayhem that follows, which includes mentions of Uber and a sampling of a scene from “The Office.” It’s a shocking and modern record, one that speaks wonderfully of our musical future.

Will Young – All the Songs

Will Young’s new single is a sad and shimmery pop song, with heart, honesty and a delicious beat that begs for fun in even the most depressing of situations. The music video makes everything a thousand times better, giving us a loving and sexy four minutes that are unapologetic, celebrating Young’s queerness and the fact that he’s so freaking handsome. His album “Lexicon” will be released on June 14.

Reggaeton

Rosalia/J Balvin – Con Altura

Rosalia and J Balvin team up once again to deliver a fiery jam that’ll appeal to even the most conservative of music listeners. “Con Altura” is glossy, delirious and extremely fun. Everything from the song drips with excess, from the music video set in a flying airplane to the gorgeous outfits and the intricate choreography. All of these traits are in line with Rosalia’s aesthetic, one that’s cemented her as one of the most original and intriguing artist of her generation. The single has a simple sound, leaning heavily on old school reggaeton vibes. Rosalia’s vocals and delightful presence are what elevate the song and transform it into something amazing.
