There is perhaps no better source at “accidentally” spoiling Marvel movie secrets than Mark Ruffalo. Last year, Ruffalo pretty much spoiled the ending of Avengers Infinity War for anyone paying close attention to his interviews. “In this next one, ha — everybody dies!” Ruffalo confessed, before Don Cheadle cut him off with a “Dude!” interjection.
Now Ruffalo has revealed that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are still workshopping the conclusion for the Avengers 4, which is set to be one of the biggest movie events in recent memory. Apparently the story is still a work in progress, as cast and crew still don’t know how the action flick will conclude. Ruffalo indicated that the reshoots Disney already had scheduled for this month will be used to “finish” the movie.
“We’re doing reshoots starting in September, and then we’ll go back into the international tour, we’ll go on tour,” Ruffalo said on The Marvelists podcast. “Then you guys will get the second installment, which we don’t even know what it’s gonna be yet. We’re not just doing reshoots. We’re going to finish the movie, which we really didn’t get to finish totally when we left it last year.”
An important caveat: The internet and social media tend to over-speculate when reshoots occur on major franchise film productions like Avengers 4. Both Star Wars one-off films, Rogue One and Solo, underwent serious reshoots, with one benefitting from the extra time while the latter…not so much. Disney schedules these reshoots into its hectic production cycle just to prepare properly, so it isn’t really news these reshoots are happening.
But it is news that the Russos and Marvel “didn’t get to finish totally” on Avengers 4 when they ended principal photography back in January. It kind of sounds like they’re making it up as they go along still, which could end brilliantly or horrendously.
“I don’t even know that they really know exactly,” Ruffalo said. “Some of it is happening while we’re there. It’s pretty amazing. And we’ll shoot some stuff and a few days later come back and reshoot it ’cause we wanna take it in another direction. It’s a very living organism; even as we approach it being a locked picture, we’re still working on it.”
Though Ruffalo’s penchant for accidentally slipping spoiler details could explain why he doesn’t know the ending.
Actors are still receiving faux scripts that include fake endings and twists for their characters in case any leaks get out.
“We were getting dummy scripts. That really blew my mind, because I was like, you have to really go out of your way to give everyone a script that isn’t quite what’s gonna happen, you know… some of us, I think, didn’t even know what we were watching until we were actually watching it, finished,” Ruffalo said.
The big question remaining on everyone’s mind will be which of our heroes lives and dies. We guess our only hope is to pay attention to Ruffalo’s interviews in case he lets that one slip, too.
