Is Martha Stewart Distancing Herself From Marijuana

In recent years, Martha Stewart has enjoyed a certain hip factor due to a fraternization with cannabis culture. Mostly this is captured through her friendship with Snoop Dogg, who’s obviously a marijuana titan. She’s even had fun moments discussing how “fine” edibles are on talks show like Wendy Williams and taught everyone how to make pot brownies.

But overall Stewart plays it coy when discussing her own marijuana use, despite her recent partnership with Canopy Growth to launch her own CBD product line, including treats aimed at pets. During her appearance on Wendy Williams program, Stewart denied ever smoking cannabis when asked recently by Yahoo Finance Canada.

“I don’t smoke. I don’t ingest smoke. Anyway, I try not to,” Stewart said, while noting once again she may have ingested some secondhand Snoop smoke here and there.

“I’ve used various (CBD) creams and patches to try to see if it makes any difference for an aching tendon,” Stewart added. “They seem to sometimes be really effective. It’s not like medicine to me. It’s more like an additive to a daily routine.”

In some ways, it makes more sense that Stewart is aligning herself with CBD as a wellness product than the cannabis community at large. After all, her whole brand revolves around health and lifestyle tips, which is where CBD has garnered the most serious interest over the past year. But it’s also slightly disappointing as Stewart is perfectly poised to bridge the gap more directly between cannabis and wellness. This is especially true when considering she just partnered with one of the biggest cannabis companies in North America in Canopy Growth.

We’re not really working in the cannabis industry. We’re working in the CBD industry,” Stewart said. “I think that people are paying attention and learning the difference between THC and CBD. They really want to figure it out.”

No, this isn’t a Miley Cyrus situation where Martha is leveraging marijuana’s trendiness for her own fame. She seems thoughtfully invested in the industry and in her relationships with some of the world’s biggest marijuana names. But she probably knows she can make more money by working within CBD than cannabis as a whole and using that to her advantage. Still, when asked about using her 35,000 Martha Stewart Living recipes to make edibles, she gave people the options to use whatever floats their boat.

“Those can be adapted with cannabis or CBD or whatever we’re going to use,” she said.
