Are There Dangerous Heavy Metals In Your Weed

0

The ability of cannabis to extract dangerous heavy metals from the soil has a dark side, especially in states where the soil may still have some old contaminants lurking within.

The marijuana plant is an amazing plant, full of healing cannabinoids that are still being discovered.

It can be used for phytoremediation, where the plant literally draws in heavy metal contaminants out of the soil, up through the roots, and into the stalks and buds. Tomatoes and some species of geraniums do this too. It cleans the soil, then gets destroyed.

Cannabis does such a good job of this that researchers near Chernobyl were using cannabis to help clean the soil of the dangerous radioactive elements strontium and cesium.

But that ability of the plant has a dark side. It’s not something that can be turned on and off.

As the industry grows in states where the soil may still have some old contaminants lurking within them, outdoor cannabis growers are confronted with a wide range of dangerous heavy metal contaminants that could get into their plant. This includes Pennsylvania, where abandoned coal mine runoff carries high levels of heavy metals that get into the soil through the water; Nevada, where researchers are looking at the possibility of radioactive material contaminating ground water used in agriculture in one of the state’s well-known farming corridors, where a large marijuana company is planting 10 acres of marijuana this spring; and Hawaii, where volcanic activity creates deposits of lead and mercury.

Colorado, which has gold mine runoff issues adding heavy metals to alpine streams, has another unusual heavy metals generator. A Colorado scientist told The Fresh Toast that there is a constant flow of deposits that come down the mountain and settle on the front range. These deposits contain all kinds of contaminants, including heavy metals, from the mountains.

RELATED: Cannabis Decontamination: What Is It And Why Is It Important?

Any grower planting on the front range in Colorado has to be aware of this continuous flow of mineral and heavy metal deposits, which has been going on for decades and is a constant source of contaminants.

California has a history of gold mining waste runoff as well that leaches heavy metals into the soil or gets dispersed by wind. One of those heavy metals is arsenic, which is one of the four dangerous heavy metals in agricultural products (cadmium, lead, and mercury are the other three).

In California, mining of copper, lead, cobalt and gold is a significant source of arsenic released to the environment, and can be found in high concentrations in the groundwater in various localities in the state.

Arsenic is deadly, quickly absorbed when eaten, and has been reported to increase the risk of cancer in the liver, bladder, kidney, lungs, and skin. Other human health effects from arsenic include decreased production of red and white blood cells, abnormal heart rhythm, blood vessel damage, and impaired nerve function causing a “pins and needles” sensation in the hands and feet.

Heavy metals are clearly a serious concern for any cannabis grower. Testing soil for one contaminant one day does not guarantee that that contaminant will not find its way back into the soil another day, either through the air or through the water used to irrigate the marijuana crop.

RELATED: What Happens When Medical Marijuana Gets Contaminated?

A cannabis grower also has to be aware of the combinations of soil being used, because soil composition plays a role as well in the movement of heavy metals into the plant. For example, the presence of either manganese or iron oxides will increase how much and how fast arsenic is absorbed by the plant.

Growers in some states are required to send a test batch of their raw grown product to a certified lab for testing, and that test batch is supposed to apply to the whole grow area. But that’s part of the problem, because larger outdoor grows can have different soil compositions from one acre to the next. And a single plant already carrying a dangerous heavy metal means a whole crop has to be destroyed—and different soil has to be found and used.

While some states where medical and/or legal cannabis is sold require testing for pesticides, not all require testing for heavy metals. California began requiring heavy metals testing on marijuana as of December, 2018. The State of Colorado, where adult use cannabis has been sold since January, 2014, just began requiring testing on relatively small harvested flower batches for heavy metals in January, 2020, according to a bulletin.

But given the dangers of heavy metals, and the likelihood of their presence in the cannabis product, more needs to be done.

The Wellness Benefits Of CBD

CBD has been touted as a cure-all for pain and other disorders. But does the compound really work to alleviate all ailments? A new survey breaks it down.

Products containing CBD are fast becoming a staple of consumer health regimes with it having the distinction of now being the most researched trend on social media. But what are the wellness benefits of CBD?

A recent survey by Project CBD validated prior established claims about CBD, most notably its effectiveness in treating pain and inflammation. About 90% of those surveyed who used CBD to reduce pain reported some improvement in the duration and frequency of their pain. In particular, their average pain score was 6.85 prior to taking CBD and 2.76 after taking CBD.

Those who use CBD for sleep reported that their average time to fall asleep was reduced from one hour to 20 minutes. They also reported waking up 1.4 times per night when on CBD versus 4.3 times per night without it.

Among those who use CBD to treat a mood disorder, 92% of them reported that they experienced some relief from nervousness after taking CBD. Also, CBD worked well at reducing feelings or irritability, agitation and sadness, as well as helping mitigate mood swings and relieve panic attacks.

Among those with medical conditions, CBD proved to be most effective for helping those with cancer and gastrointestinal (GI) diseases by relieving nausea, vomiting, and indigestion, as well as abdominal pain and cramps.

About 40% of those surveyed reported having one or more side effects when taking CBD. The most common complaints were increased appetite, dry mouth, dry or bloodshot eyes, and tiredness. These complaints tended to be mild in nature.

In terms of the types of CBD used, the majority of those surveyed used hemp derived CBD. Tinctures and topicals were preferred over flower and edibles. Those who used CBD products used them multiple times throughout the day. Often more than one type of product was used, and the combination of a tincture and topical was the most common combo of CBD products.

Finally, while some claim CBD is a panacea that can cure all ills, this survey showed that some symptoms do not respond well to CBD. For example, CBD did not offer significant relief from PMS-related bloating and diarrhea, the constipation that’s often associated with cancer, and low sex drive caused as a result of menopause. CBD was also not beneficial in helping those with gastrointestinal diseases maintain a healthy weight.

The wellness benefits of CBD appears to be best utilized to help people alleviate their pain, improve their moods, and get a good night’s sleep.

NORML Marijuana Safety Guidelines During Coronavirus

Marijuana users should participate in online happy hour sessions and routinely clean their smoking devices, recommends NORML.

As Americans slowly adopt social distancing parameters into their daily life, some have developed creative ways to see friends and family without furthering the spread of the coronavirus. A common coping mechanism is virtual “happy hours,” where people gather in online video chatrooms to “grab a drink” together and catch up, just like they were visiting a local bar.

Now, national marijuana advocacy group NORML is recommending that marijuana smokers do the same. Though cannabis communities and advocacy groups have always thrived on the social element of marijuana consumption, this practice goes against social distancing recommendations from public officials.

“As long as cultures have consumed cannabis, the practice of sharing a joint among friends has been a common social practice,” NORML executive director Erik Altieri wrote in a blog post. “But given what we know about COVID-19 and its transmission, it would be mindful during this time to halt this behavior.”

“This means practicing social distancing as much as is feasibly possible, and also staying indoors to the largest extent you can — especially if you are among those who are most vulnerable, such as elderly medical cannabis patients,” Altieri added. “For the time being, as is being advised, you should avoid attending large gatherings, instead taking a serious look at the opportunities afforded to us by modern technology to communicate and host events virtually through online platforms.”

The National Institutes of Health announced the novel coronavirus can live anywhere for up to hours and even days on uncleaned surfaces. As humans can contract the coronavirus through their mouth, nose, and eyes, routinely cleaning marijuana pipes, bongs, and other smoking devices is paramount during this time. NORML recommended using 90% Isopropyl alcohol as an “effective and affordable way” to clean up any lingering germs or pathogens on your smoking piece.

RELATED: COVID-19 Will Now Derail New York Marijuana Legalization

NORML also told marijuana consumers to continue buying from the legal market as much as possible at this time. Buying cannabis from the black market jeopardizes consumer health and risks spreading the coronavirus, as these goods are not regulated. They could also compromise your immune system, due to unwanted pesticides, mold, and other adulterants found in black market marijuana.

“This advice is especially pertinent for portable vaping devices, as unregulated products have been known to contain vitamin E and other dangerous additives that can harm the lungs,” said Altieri. “We also encourage everyone to remain vigilant of online misinformation (like any claims cannabis or CBD can help cure or protect against this virus) and to beware of potential scammers promoting similar claims.”

Does Gal Gadot Smoke Weed?

Gal Gadot is known for portraying Wonder Woman. Does she smoke weed?

Gal Gadot is one of the world’s biggest stars, all thanks to her role as Wonder Woman, which became one of the most profitable movies in the industry.

Recently, Gadot went viral for reasons she probably didn’t expect; with good intentions in mind, she organized a video of herself and other famous people singing John Lennon’s “Imagine,” as a way of providing hope and entertainment for quarantined people all over the world. The response wasn’t what celebrities expected.

https://twitter.com/tylercoates/status/1240495928450015232

Gadot hasn’t addressed the memes and criticisms and she likely won’t. Still, it made us wonder: Does Gal Gadot smoke weed?

RELATED: Does Justin Trudeau Smoke Weed?

Like most celebrities with large followings, Gadot has a team of publicists that carefully tailor her image. The fact that she’s part of a huge super hero franchise and is an icon for young girls means that her publicists work hard to keep her image clean. Finding a photo of her smoking a joint is highly unlikely.

Still, we did the research and found some data that allows for us to speculate.

In 2018, during the Oscars Awards Ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel, Armie Hammer, Gadot and other actors surprised an audience at the TCL Chinese movie theater. When they entered the room Kimmel said that it smelled strongly of marijuana. “It’s true,” Gadot said. Then she joked, “I wouldn’t know though.”

So that’s a careful yes? This isn’t the 50s. Everyone’s smoked weed at some point in their lives.

On the other hand, there’s a beloved marijuana strain called Wonder Woman, which Growth Op describes as:

“On a bad day, Wonder Woman can make one believe they have superpowers. With effects ranging from calmness to a boost of energy, the strain can come in handy to fight the evil powers of negativity and darkness. On other occasions, the effects can be quite the opposite — making one feel like a wannabe sidekick prone to anxiety and dizzying spells.”

So we may not know whether Gadot smokes weed or not, but at least we know there’s some truly powerful weed named after her most iconic role.

A Doctor’s Advice About Self-Quarantine

Other than cleaning the house, which can itself cause some boredom, how about doing things you would not usually do?

A doctor’s advice about self-quarantine.

I will start off by acknowledging that I am a very social person. This medical/social experiment of self-quarantine in order to flatten the curve of new cases of COVID-19 has been very difficult for me. It has made me consider and value my relationships with others and think about new ways to use my time while quarantined. I am learning to adjust my day to prevent boredom and social isolation.

On a daily basis we are given new information about COVID-19. What we first thought was a disease that was only lethal to the elderly we are now finding out is also very dangerous to those in their 20s and 30s. At this point, we do not know the long-term side effects that one might have who survives COVID-19 pneumonia. I have a close friend who barely survived SARS pneumonia who is faced with a lifetime of difficulty breathing and recurring medical difficulties. I expect this will be the same for those who survive COVID-19 pneumonia.

The good news is that this is not nuclear radiation which would prevent us from going outside for years and damage our food and water supply.

When I see pictures of large groups on a beach, in a bar or restaurant, I can only imagine that they either have no idea about the serious nature of this world wide pandemic, do not understand how easily it is spread, are so egocentric that they do not care if they might infect others or deny the fact that they might indeed suffer a severe consequence of this disease.

RELATED: Doctor’s Advice On How To Ease Anxiety Around Coronavirus

This is a perfect time for social influencers to consider social responsibility. We know that many people look to leaders in their own generation for guidance about political and social thinking. I implore social influencers to think about the effect they can have on people in their own generation. They might look beyond promoting products and for a month and encourage people to self-quarantine. They will never get the feedback that what they have done has helped, but by doing this, if they truly have an impact on the people they influence, they might each save 10, 100, 1000 or even 100,000 lives from either death or severe complications upon surviving his disease.

My daughter and her friends have taught me a technique they call “Our Pod”. In this they have multiple friends who are completely self-quarantining independent from each other. After two weeks of self-quarantining, they feel it is safe to get together since the presumption is that none have virus. If after that time there is any break in quarantine from the “pod”, the person who broke the quarantine must restart the process independent of the rest of the group for two weeks before they can rejoin. Apparently, this was started during the Ebola crisis.

This is not a perfect plan and is probably more suitable for apartment dwellers, however, it is something to consider as this crisis unfolds.

So how do we keep from going crazy/bored? Other than cleaning the house, which can itself cause some boredom, how about doing things you would not usually do? Things that I can think of off hand are:

Writing to people who were important in your past that you have not been in touch with for years, video chat with friends over coffee, do things you have put off, reading a book, start playing the musical instrument you put away for a rainy day, write in a journal, do some artwork. Then we get to cannabis and alcohol. These can both be used socially in person, but also on a video chat with social interaction.

A doctor's advice about self-quarantine
Photo by Goodboy Picture Company/Getty Images

I caution people from using cannabis or alcohol to relieve boredom. This would be a temporary fix. It will not really improve the boredom and increase the chance of needing the effects rather than just enjoying the moment.

Over time in my surgical practice I have noted that kind people become kinder and more giving during stressful situations and mean people become meaner and more selfish.

I personally am grateful to those of you who are self-quarantining or performing active social distancing. These are quite difficult to do on an ongoing basis. What you are doing is for the benefit of the community and keeping your loved ones at a lower risk.

Another piece of a doctor’s advice about self-quarantine, please be safe out there.

5 Cheap Ways That Allow You To Limit Your Smartphone Use

Limiting your smartphone use can be challenging. Here are some tools that can help you depend on it less frequently.

Quitting your phone is hard. But also, why would you want to? Just because technology creeps you out doesn’t mean that the world and our current culture will change. No matter how vintage we want our lives to be, there are great technological developments that we shouldn’t miss out on because, like it or not, our current devices are things that we often need to rely on.

What should be addressed, however, is how much time we waste on them. Although you can always quit social media entirely by deleting the apps, there’s no reason why you should let go of something that brings you joy. The best thing you can do is monitor your phone usage and limit its power over you, buying yourself other devices and tools that can split up your phone’s tasks more evenly.

Check out five cheap and simple things you can do in order to reduce how much you depend on your phone.

Alarm clock

Although your phone has an excellent alarm, the fact that you reach for it first thing in the morning makes it a huge source of temptation and procrastination. Try to start your day off the right way, by having some coffee, working out, or doing something other than checking your social media. Alarm clocks help a lot, and there are tons of cute ones you can purchase online.

Paper journals and planners

Phones are great organizational tools but you could get these same benefits from other sources, such as journals and planners. If you’re a visual person, you can purchase dry erase boards and calendars, which are great for organizing your weeks and are also a fun and playful way of keeping your brain unscrambled.

MP3 players

MP3 players are practically ancient relics but there are still some that have survived and that aren’t iPods, which at their most rudimentary cost a minimum of $200. Average MP3 players cost between $20 – $30, and have really long battery lives. They’re a little ugly but there’s some charm to them, which gives you the perfect chance to cultivate new hobbies like downloading music instead of streaming it.

Noise canceling headphones

There are dozens of noise canceling headphones with different price ranges, isolating sound and helping you stay focused at home or at work. These devices can help you get immersed in a task without having to hear your phone beeping or allowing for any other type of distractions.

Keep your phone out of reach while it charges

Finally, one of the most useful ways of keeping some distance from your phone is to charge the device out of your reach, preferably in some place that’s far from your bed or your room. This will allow you to get less distracted while you sleep and will also eliminate annoying instances like being awoken by a notification or by your screen lighting up because your phone completed its charging cycle.

4 Coronavirus Scams And How To Avoid Them

Moments of crisis and panic are perfect for scammers. Here’s how you can avoid them and protect yourself.

The coronavirus has had a profound impact on all businesses and employees. It has also caused an unexpected rise in creative scams, which take advantage of the collective panic that surrounds us.

Hackers, scammers and all sorts of people trying to make a profit off of the situation have devised different ways of robbing people’s money and online data while also distributing misinformation. These scams range from the spread of fake news and home remedies to more serious cases, such as selling fake vaccines.

The FTC warns that hacks of this kind are common in moments of crisis, like with the Swine Flu and Zika virus. Here are 5 of the most common coronavirus scams and how you can avoid them:

There have been cases of robocalls and bots hacking into Facebook accounts, contacting  friends and family and asking them for personal information, gift cards or transfers of money. To prevent these occurrences keep an eye on your emails and social media. If someone manages to break into your account, you’ll likely get strange emails and online activity you don’t recognize. It’s also important to inform the elderly about suspicious operator phone calls that ask for personal data.

Fake information

Now that most of us get our information through online sources, it’s extremely important fact check and verify sources. Before you retweet or repost information, it’s important to look for the source and to verify that whatever is being stated is true. It’s also important to avoid clicking on suspicious links, since these could download viruses onto your device.

CBD & marijuana as cures for the virus

RELATED: Ask Our Experts: Cannabis Vs. Coronavirus

Reuters reports that there have been cases of people tampering with images and making claims stating that CBD and marijuana can cure COVID-19. While these kinds of tweets are clearly fake, a lot of social media users don’t know the difference, so it’s important to keep your friends and family members informed and to stop them whenever they try to spread this kind of information.

Fake CDC & WHO emails

Keep an eye out for legitimate looking emails appearing to be from the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization, sending you updates on the developments of the coronavirus. This usually isn’t the way this kind of information is disseminated. In order to stay updated, check official websites and subscribe to official government text chains. Remember that if a legitimate vaccine or cure is found, these websites will be the first to tell you.

COVID-19 Will Now Derail New York Marijuana Legalization

New York lawmakers will prioritize response to the novel coronavirus pandemic and likely delay marijuana legalization.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo intended to legalize adult-use marijuana through the state budget this session, but the novel coronavirus outbreak may force the issue on the back burner. The state budget is due in two weeks and key lawmakers now believe issues around legalization, including how the state will spend tax revenue created by marijuana sales, will not be negotiated in time.

State Sen. Liz Krueger sponsored a recently revised legalization bill, but the state’s reaction to the ongoing pandemic takes precedence.

“I don’t believe marijuana is going to be negotiated in this budget in the next few days,” Krueger told WMHT. “I just don’t see it as realistic.”

RELATED: Medical Marijuana Considered ‘Essential’ Good During Quarantines

State lawmakers have also discussed expediting the process to finalize the budget, which is due April 1. Gov. Cuomo has emphasized at numerous junctures the need to legalize recreational marijuana through the state budget, including in his January State of the State address. Earlier this week, Cuomo did not give up the possibility such legislative action could still happen. However, he has received more opposition than support from fellow lawmakers in recent days.

Photo by Colton Duke via Unsplash

“Our immediate priority should be passing a budget extender to keep the government running while ensuring the state has the necessary resources to address the coronavirus crisis,” Assemblyman Robert Smullen wrote in a column. “The potential legalization of marijuana and other unrelated policy issues should be legislated outside of the state budget when they can receive full and proper consideration.”

RELATED: New York Expediting Marijuana Legalization Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Cuomo tried to legalize recreational cannabis through the budget and legislative session last year, but lawmakers could not compromise on various details. For now, it appears not enough support exists to push through adult-use marijuana legalization through the accelerated budget process. New York will have to wait until the coronavirus outbreak subsides for talks around marijuana legalization to resume.

“At a time when we are practicing social distancing, and when the CDC recommends people not congregate in groups larger than ten, it is undemocratic to slip policies into a budget that cannot be discussed by stakeholders who visit Albany or debated on the floor,” state Senator John J. Flanagan said in a statement.
