A Beginner’s Guide To CBD

Many have never explored and/or encountered cannabis, and since hemp is now legal, a CBD beginner’s guide is necessary!

Picture it: the hemp and CBD isle at your local health shop. Likely, there’s a bit of hemp here, CBD over there — hemp and CBD everywhere! There are hundreds of products to choose from in just about every form, such as topicals, tinctures, bath salt, face cream, soap, detergent, and so much more. Now for the fun part — selecting the best product for your needs.

What seems like a CBD craze could just be an awakening; people waking up to the truth about cannabis. Besides healing, there are many benefits that the plant offers. Many have never explored and/or encountered cannabis, and since hemp is now legal, a CBD beginner’s guide is necessary!

My goal is to provide an overview that will make it easier for beginners to shop. Understanding CBD, hemp, forms, methods, and legality will make shopping for CBD easier. My hope is that by the end of this beginner’s guide to CBD, newcomers to the compound will feel confident when shopping and reading information.

The Difference Between Cannabis Hemp and Cannabis Marijuana

Hemp and marijuana are, taxonomically speaking, the same plant. They’re basically just different names for the same genus (cannabis) and species. What makes hemp hemp, and marijuana marijuana is THC.

RELATED: Hemp: Marijuana Or Not Marijuana?

THC makes the difference and this difference is made at the breeding stage according to Kush.com, which explains:

Each of these unique goals require a specific species of cannabis bred for that goal. For example, almost all industrial hemp seeds produce very litttle THC. If extracting THC for recreation is your goal, it is going to be almost impossible to do this with industrial hemp seeds. Vice versa some THC dense strains of cannabis produce shorter & thinner stalks. This means that they would not be sought after for harvest hemp biomass fibre.”

Generally, cannabis-hemp flower is high in CBD and 0.3% or less THC.

The Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil

Hemp oil and CBD oil could be different, therefore, understanding what something labeled “hemp” means, and understanding what something labeled “CBD” means, is important.

RELATED: Everything You Need To Know About Cannabis Oil

CBD is found and is extracted from the leaves, bud/flowers, and stalks of the cannabis-hemp plant. Hemp, when discussed in oil, gummy, and extract, is generally extracted from the hemp seed, and seeds do not contain cannabinoids. When something is labeled “hemp oil”, you want to make sure that if you’re looking for CBD, that there is in fact CBD in the product. The label “hemp” doesn’t automatically mean “CBD”.

The Legal Status of CBD in the United States

The Farm Bill that was passed in 2018, removed hemp from the DEA’s Schedule I list of drugs. When this happened, hemp was reclassified as a ““agricultural commodity.” With this reclassification, CBD from hemp became legal. Important to note- CBD from hemp is legal. CBD from marijuana remains illegal.

RELATED: FDA And USDA Start Making Sense On Hemp CBD

Something else to note: this reclassification did not make it legal for anyone to grow hemp at home. Industrial hemp became legal and that means, licenses and business registrations are needed before a single seed is planted. Though- if in a legal Cannabis state, it may be legal in your state- to grow hemp at home. Definitely check state law before planting a seed.

CBD Forms/Consumption Methods

There are multiple forms of consuming hemp-CBD:

Flower: smoking, dry herb vaping, and juicing.

RSO (Rick Simpson oil): allowing the oil to dissolve/swallowing, or adding it to a piece of food like a cracker or bread.

Oil tincture: usually through a dropper, place the oil under the tongue and hold for 60–90 seconds then swallow.

Edible: gummies, chocolate bars, beverages, etc.

Concentrate: vape pen, dab, infused bowl, and infused joint.

Topical: application to skin.

Each method has an effect a little different than the other.

Labels, Certificates of Analysis, and QR Codes

  • A good CBD label is informative provides information like:
  • The amount of CBD per bottle/package
  • Total CBD servings per bottle/package
  • The amount of CBD per dose
  • If the CBD is full spectrum, isolate, or broad spectrum (this is really important because a full spectrum CBD product will have very low levels of THC, whereas an isolate product is THC free)
  • Ingredients in the product

Your CBD product purchase should come with a certificate of analysis or a QR code. A certificate of analysis is a document from the testing facility and should:

  • Be from a laboratory that conducted the testing
  • Tell the various cannabinoids found in the product
  • The amount (usually percentages) of each cannabinoid per bottle/package and per serving.
  • The terpenes found in the product/terpene analysis

Not all states require companies to provide a certificate of analysis. Instead, the use of QR codes is enforced. A QR code is a machine-readable optical label that provides important information about the product that it is attached to.

RELATED: Top 4 Predictions For Hemp And Hemp CBD In 2020

The QR code is usually on the product package. When scanning that code with a smart phone, you a redirected to a webpage with the product’s information:

  • Ingredients used
  • The certificate of analysis with all testing info
  • The third-party lab that tested the product

This quick overview is like a pre-requisite, an introduction to the very basis of CBD. This guide for beginners of CBD is a shopping tool, not a medical tool or guide. The goal is to help make the shopping experience and conversations with retailers a little easier by guiding you through the basics.

Consumers Are Stocking Up On Weed Like It’s Toilet Paper

The coronavirus outbreak has caused sales to almost double in some recreational markets, with edibles seeing the most dramatic rise.

When the gravity around the coronavirus finally struck Americans this past week, most rushed to buy the necessities to survive an extended period of isolation. This included things like bread, toilet paper, and peanut butter. It also included marijuana.

Recent data from Headset Analytics confirms the response around COVID-19 has caused a recent uptick of business for cannabis stores. Some states saw marijuana sales comparable to 4/20, an annual holiday that accounts for the biggest spikes in weed purchases. On Tuesday, California adult-use sales were 56% higher compared to the previous month’s Monday average. Oregon marijuana sales, meanwhile, saw a 75% increase this week using the same parameters.

Washington state didn’t see significantly more people rushing to cannabis stores, with only a 6% rise in total baskets. Those that did come, however, spent more than normal. The average basket price was $33.70 before taxes, which was 28% higher than January and February sales. Denver easily topped those figures, however, as residents spent an average $58 per basket purchase.

Headset Director of Analytics Liz Hannah added that Nevada didn’t see nearly the dramatic sales increase as other states.

“Anytime there’s a bit of a consumer panic, people exhibit stock-up behavior or hoarding behavior,” Connors told The Fresh Toast. “It appears cannabis is no exception and I would expect that to continue at least as long as it does in the consumer-packaged goods space.”

More Legal Marijuana Equals Less Crime? Not So Fast

Headset data shows consumers stocked up on edibles in a dramatic manner. In only four weeks, edibles had a 27% increase in market share due to a coronavirus-related bump. California marijuana stores had a 107% jump in edible volume sales this week, meaning residents bought more than twice the amount of edibles as usual. Washington had a 56% boost in edible sales as well.

“With edibles, it’s probably the easiest way to get high without touching your face very much,” Connors said. “If you want to share it with someone, they’re pre-wrapped little. So there’s very little risk of transmitting the virus versus sharing a joint. I think it’s a great decision right now.”

RELATED: Medical Marijuana Considered ‘Essential’ Good During Quarantines

Cities and states have declared marijuana an “essential good” for residents, even those living under “shelter-in-place” conditions. Like grocery stores, dispensaries should remain open. But if sales continue to rise, Connors predicts possible restrictions coming soon.

“It feels like people are stocking up on cannabis the same as they’re stacking up on toilet paper at this point,” she said. “I don’t really see a lot of restrictions in place in cannabis stores where you can only buy two of something. But if trends continue, I wouldn’t be surprised if that starts to happen.”

The Best 7 Movies To Watch While High

0

In times of stress it’s very important to keep an entertaining and engaging watch list.

Aside from cleaning supplies, food and weed, one of the most important parts of your quarantine should be a decent watch list, filled with movies for different moods and occasions — like extreme boredom.

With all the stress surrounding us, it can be easy to smoke all the weed in your house in one sitting, which will likely feel great for about a day but is most definitely a bad idea. Making a routine, even if it feels pointless, is important in times of stress, because it keeps you healthy and grounded; a better alternative than to feel like you’re living through one endless and particularly boring weekend.

When it’s time to chill out and escape the news, there’s no better combination than weed and a movie, especially movies that pair perfectly with your mood. Here are 7 movies you can stream that will distract you, freak you out, or whatever it is you need in this time of crisis:

Booksmart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhd3lo_IWJc

Booksmart was one of the most critically acclaimed comedies of 2019, earning plenty of recognition, nominations and wins for important awards. It’s also a genuinely great movie, featuring a cast of young actors that are posed to move on to other great films. Booksmart follows the script of the “crazy night” teen movies, where fish out of water characters try to have the best night of their lives only to run into a lot of trouble and learn a big lesson afterwards. You can stream it on Hulu.

Bridesmaids

RELATED: Is It Okay To Experiment With Marijuana During Self-Quarantine?

Earning Academy Award nominations and inspiring the still strong trend of women-led R-rated comedies, Bridesmaids, aside from being hilarious, is also a surprisingly complete and touching story. Annie (Kristen Wiig) is going through a bad time in her life, only to learn that her best friend is getting married. Disasters on airplanes, bridal shops and bachelorette parties ensue. You can stream it on HBO Go.

Scary Movie

The Scary Movie franchise is not known for its quality storylines, but the first couple of ones were hilarious, featuring iconic performances by Anna Faris and Regina Hall. I doubt there’s a funnier and sillier movie to watch while high trying to escape the real world. You can stream it on Netflix.

Pan’s Labyrinth

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, Pan’s Labyrinth is an imaginative movie, with trippy monsters and special effects that can only be augmented by some weed. It’s a good option for viewers who are looking for something more thought provoking and challenging than a stoner comedy. You can stream it on Netflix.

Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse

Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse managed to do the impossible: introduce something fresh and exciting into the exploited super hero genre. The narrative is inventive and the movie is self-aware, making jokes and relying on the fact that you’re already well acquainted with Spider-man‘s world. The animation is also bright and sharp, keeping you engaged even under a super strong high. You can stream it on Netflix.

Long Shot

RELATED: Here’s How You Can Stop Yourself From Overthinking

In every stoner movie list there must be a Seth Rogen film. Instead of sticking with stoner classics like Pineapple Express and Superbad, Long Shot is one of his most recent films. Directed by Rogen’s long-time collaborator Jonathan Levine, Long Shot is a romantic comedy that is funny and touching, featuring great performances from Rogen and Charlize Theron. You can stream it on HBO Go.

High Life

High Life is probably the most challenging movie in this list, one that might be made more accessible if you smoke some weed and embrace all the weirdness in it with a laugh. Starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche, High Life can be watched plenty of times with all viewings adding new elements to discover. There’s also no better combination than space movies and weed. You can stream it on Amazon Prime.

Cannabis And Hand-Washing: Can Weed Eliminate Bacteria?

Given the pandemic America now faces, could CBD or cannabis offer help in alleviating future bacterial outbreaks?

Scientists have long thought that cannabis had remarkable powers. Recently, it’s come to light that cannabis is a far more capable cleaner of bacteria than was first realized.

January 2020 study published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science found that cannabis cleaned plaque better than over-the-counter hygiene products. (We covered the story here.) The study found:

“Cannabinoids have the potential to be used as an effective antibacterial agent against dental plaque-associated bacteria. Moreover, it provides a safer alternative for synthetic antibiotics to reduce the development of drug resistance.”

This isn’t the first time that research has notated that cannabis has antiseptic properties. The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience’s Centre for Superbug Solutions in Australia notated that cannabis is not only an anti-inflammatory, but they believe it has potential to be an antibiotic.

Their research team recently unveiled research showcased by Dr. Mark Blaskovich that illuminates the potential around cannabis therapy. Focusing on skin conditions, the team involved found that cannabidiol was, “remarkably effective at killing a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria, including bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics, and did not lose effectiveness after extended treatment.”

RELATED: Oral Health And Weed: Could Marijuana Prevent Cavities?

Brandon Novy, a microbiology researcher at Reed College in Portland, believes the findings warrant more attention. He’s also presented a CBD-focused study that found the compound had potential to fight “gram-negative infections.”

Given the pandemic America now faces, could CBD or cannabis offer help in alleviating future bacterial outbreaks, especially given that a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) believes antibiotic resistant bacteria may claim over 50 million lives by 2050

Coronavirus: Bad For Marijuana Companies, Good For Investors?

Companies have added hemp and CBD to body products for years. With bans being slowly lifted on cannabis as well, companies are looking into research around effective use of THC and CBD in other hygiene products.

RELATED: What Is The Functionality Of CBD In Skincare Products?

While cannabis has been shown to  help strengthen the immune system and allow for better sleep, so far it doesn’t appear cannabis or CBD can help against viruses like COVID-19 — at least topically. But perhaps, given the incredible push to wash hands, that cannabis and CBD can both help with skin health and moisturization in these difficult times. The answer appears to be a resounding yes.

Known for helping with dermatitis and decreasing inflammation, hemp can offer relief from water-chapped hands. Maybe its integration into hand-washing products isn’t too far off after all?

4 CBD Products That Can Improve Your Sex Life

CBD products can help people have better sex while also treating different sexual conditions. Here’s how.

Marijuana has long been used to improve sex, with plenty of people swearing by the results. Studies now support these anecdotes, with THC helping people achieve more powerful orgasms and a more pleasant sexual experience, especially in the case of women. When it comes to CBD, the cannabinoid also shows plenty of promise for sex.

While many credit the THC high as marijuana’s most beneficial sexual aid, CBD could help people who have stress or performance anxiety without the psychedelic high that THC produces. According to experts, CBD can reduce pain, promote relaxation and enhance sensations without the fuzzy feeling that THC causes.

Here are 4 kinds of CBD products that can improve your sex life:

Edibles

CBD edibles can help people cope with anxiety and nervousness, but there are edibles designed specifically with sex in mind. These types of products contain THC and other aphrodisiac components, while also ensuring that the dosage in them is low enough so that it won’t impair sexual performance. Edibles with a focus on sex tend to contain small amounts of THC in order to provide the best possible results.

Lubricants

For women who tend to suffer from painful sex or who simply want to feel more, CBD lubricant can help relax and enhance their experience. CBD is an anti-inflammatory agent; when placed directly on the skin it could provide fast acting effects and could help people focus more and stay present.

Massage oils

CBD and massages go great together, with the compound’s anti-inflammatory properties providing relief for sore muscles, more tension relief and the chance to deliver more satisfying massages.

Flower

Strains with equal amounts of THC and CBD can improve sex, especially when incorporated into foreplay. When the weed kicks in, couples will likely experience stronger desire and arousal. This method is preferable for people who have some experience with cannabis, since if you consume too large of a dose, sexual pleasure can be reduced.

Seth Rogen Live Tweets ‘Cats’ While High

Cats was released months ago, but everyone continues to be very confused by it. Including Seth Rogen.

Now that some of us have been at home for significant amounts of time avoiding contact with others and trying to stop ourselves from eating all of our snacks in one sitting, we have learned that entertainment is a prized commodity. We’re all so desperate that some have even resorted to watching Cats, one of the biggest and most puzzling box office flops of 2019.

Among those confused is Seth Rogen, who decided to rent the movie, get high and live tweet his experience.

Rogen made it clear that he had no knowledge of the original musical or the movie, only that it’s about a group of cats, that it stars a lot of famous people, and that it’s been the source of a lot of mockery.

Cats, based on the super successful Broadway musical, has always been one of the most puzzling stories out there. Despite making millions of dollars on stages across the world and having some iconic songs, no one knows what it’s about. There are cats, there’s singing and that’s about it.

According to Broadway World, a Jellicle is the name of the tribe of this group of cats. A cat gang?

Kelis Will Host New Netflix Marijuana Cooking Show On 4/20

Cooked with Cannabis will drop on 4/20 and feature six episodes hosted by singer Kelis and chef Leather Storrs.

For some people, edibles only consist of gummies and chocolate candies. But the reality is that cannabis-infused cooking has inspired a whole new culinary tradition, as chefs learn how to incorporate strong, weed-y flavors into various cuisines.

Exploring that new world is the inspiration behind Cooked with Cannabis, a new Netflix cooking competition show hosted by singer and chef Kelis. Yes, she’s the brilliant woman behind that indelible “Milkshake” song we all know and love. Alongside co-host and Portland chef Leather Storrs, Kelis will judge contestants’ ability to craft culinary masterpieces using cannabis-infused ingredients.

Similar to cooking shows like Chopped, each episode will feature three professional chefs who must complete a three-course meal with an instructed theme. That theme might range from “Danksgiving” to world cuisines, with the winning chef taking home $10,000. The meals will be rated by Kelis and Storrs, as well as a rotating panel of dinner guests who will have a say in crowning the champion.

Medical Marijuana Considered Essential

0

Multiple state and local health departments announced medical marijuana was an essential good during “shelter-in-place” orders.

Cities across the nation have announced “shelter-in-place” orders for residents to limit the spread of novel coronavirus. “Shelter-in-place” means residents will be ordered to remain in their homes outside essential activities. San Francisco has already ordered a “shelter-in-place” for residents and Mayor Bill de Blasio told New Yorkers Tuesday they should prepare for the possibility of a similar order.

You may wonder what exactly falls under essential activities. In San Francisco, essential businesses like health care facilities, gas stations, grocery stores, banks, and more could remain open, while restaurants could fulfill delivery and/or to-go orders. People could also leave their homes to see medical professionals, obtain food and supplies, engage in outdoor activity, and care for family members in other households.  It seems now, medical marijuana considered essential.

Now, several cities have announced that buying medical marijuana will be allowed under any “shelter-in-place” order. Several local and state health departments have also confirmed they will expand the delivery capabilities of dispensaries and permit possible door-side transactions for medical marijuana patients.

“There are several million state-licensed medical cannabis patients in America,” NORML executive director Erik Altieri told The Fresh Toast. “Because many of these patients are among our more vulnerable populations, it is essential that they maintain uninterrupted, regulated access to lab-tested products during this time. Policymakers must not push these patients to the illicit marketplace because unregulated products may contain contaminants, adulterants, molds, pesticides, or other components that could potentially endanger their health.”

The New York Health Department announced that medical marijuana could be delivered and dispensaries were considered essential Tuesday. So long as cannabis providers continue to comply with government and regulations guidelines, like reviewing a customer’s medical ID card, they will remain open.

“In the event nonessential businesses are forced to shut down due to COVID-19, registered organizations in the medical marijuana program will be considered essential and allowed to remain open because they are considered medical providers,” said a spokesperson for the New York State Department of Health.

San Francisco initially ruled that only medical cannabis shops were considered essential Tuesday, while the city’s recreational businesses were not. But according to the city’s website Wednesday, the city had extended the ruling to include recreational dispensary as essential, too.

“For those facilities that continue to maintain operations for on-site retail sales, NORML encourages them to engage in recommended best practices in order to keep both their employees and their customers safe,” Altieri said. “This includes frequent sanitization of shelving and other public spaces, limits on the total number of customers permitted to congregate together at one time, and potentially imposing specific hours of operation for elderly or other higher-risk patients.”

Painsomnia: When Falling Asleep Hurts, CBD Can Help

With many individuals unable to stay asleep (or fall back asleep) due to pain, it seems marijuana or CBD may be a smart integration for those not wanting to worry about pill-dependence or addiction.

March is National Sleep Awareness Month and Americans have a severe problem with sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, 45% of Americans say that poor or inefficient sleep has affected their daily activities.

How much sleep are American men, women and children not getting? The journal Sleep found that poor sleep, or as they put it, “the canary in the coal mine” of disorders, was affecting a majority of American families. They surveyed individuals in 2017 and found surprising statistics.

  • 40.9 % of African Americans, 32.9% of Hispanics, and 30.9% of Caucasians shared that they slept fewer than six hours a night.
  • Individuals reported that from 2004 to 2017, “short sleep” (sleeping fewer than six hours a night) was on the rise 2%.

The rise of Painsomnia

Coined by Dawn Gibson and Dr. Ben Nowell of CreakyJoints, painsomnia, the painful lack of sleep affecting many, can also cause already established conditions to worsen. In a recent case study, Gibson and Nowell explained just how some individuals are actually woken up by pain and have trouble falling back asleep.

“Painsomnia is a patient-generated term for the vicious cycle of pain and sleep deprivation or fatigue related to a chronic condition or its treatment,” they said. “Evolving from social media discussions, painsomnia is a shorthand description that helps people relate to each other in posts about being prodded awake by pain and being unable to find a comfortable position in bed or to “settle down” for sleep and rest. Anxiety and frustration about lack of sleep and its impact on functioning the next day often accompany patients’ painsomnia experiences and virtual discussions.”

RELATED: Let’s Talk About Why Sleep Is Important — And How To Get Some

With many individuals unable to stay asleep (or fall back asleep) due to pain, it seems marijuana or CBD may be a smart integration for those not wanting to worry about pill-dependence or addiction. Obstructive sleep apnea has already been approved for medical marijuana in some cases with researchers looking to patient feedback to explore more uses as well.

In an article this past July, The Fresh Toast shared that CBD can benefit those from insomnia. Peter Grinspoon, M.D., professor at Harvard Medical School shared, “CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for patients who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep.”

Marijuana Can Improve The Quality Of Sleep

The American Sleep Apnea Association believes sleep is not only tied to health and work performance, but so much more. Their research shows that over 50 million Americans experience the pain of falling (and staying asleep) with complications due to 80 different sleeping disorders.

RELATED: How Does Marijuana Affect My Sleep And Dreams?

With chronic insomnia affecting over 10% of Americans, the Association thinks the lack of a good night’s sleep is a major cause for concern. They state:

“Sleepiness affects vigilance, reaction times, learning abilities, alertness, mood, hand-eye coordination, and the accuracy of short-term memory. Sleepiness has been identified as the cause of a growing number of on-the-job accidents, automobile crashes and multi-model transportation tragedies.”

By green-lighting medical marijuana and CBD in more states, Americans could have options for dealing with pain, sleeplessness and fatigue, bettering the economy and community.
