Cuba, with its warm sun, rich cultural history, and gorgeous beaches, is a no-brainer hotspot for tourists. It’s also really easy to get in the mood, with all of that sunshine and hot, sticky nights, if you know what I mean.
In the 1990s, Havana was home to dozens of “posadas,” or love motels, that were state-run until economic crisis hit. Private companies took over the posada market, renting rooms for about $5 for three hours — which might sound like a steal, but for local Cubans, it’s unaffordable.

People have resorted to sex on the beach (literally, not the libation) and public displays of affection when there’s nowhere to bone. Housing shortages over the past decades, where families lived together communally by necessity, pushed couples outside of the home, where the were precious few places to get intimate privacy.
Now, there’s a love revolution in the works.
“State housing officials at the Provincial Housing Company of Havana say the new network of five posadas will be highly lucrative and will help people struggling with Havana’s overcrowded and scarce housing. Many families in Havana have to share apartments. Divorced couples are often forced to remain together because of the housing shortage. The officials said they hoped the new chain would provide cheaper options for love-making in the city.”

“We want to revive this service that is in high demand, has a big social impact and without a doubt is very profitable,” Alfonso Muñoz Chang of the Provincial Housing Company of Havana told the Trabajadores newspaper. “We will start with what we call Hotel Vento, a two-story building with 16 rooms with bathrooms.”
Sounds pretty nice. Then again, so does sex on the beach, if you’re a tourist. To each his own.
