Beyoncé may or may not have been high during a 2001 interview where she confessed her adoration for whales.
In 2001, members of Destiny’s Child, including Beyoncé Knowles Carter, gave an iconic interview that suggests Queen Bey may have been high on weed at the time. It was a simple enough question from Amsterdam-based outlet Toazted: If you could be any animal, what would you choose?
Journalists ask these kind of goofy questions all the time. It’s a trick to have celebrities say something revealing about themselves while eschewing any personal details of their lives. What was noticeable instead was how serious and contemplative Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams were in considering the query. So serious, in fact, Rowland didn’t have an answer at first.
While munching on something and appearing sleepy (hint hint), Beyonce interjected with a passionate response.

“I know what I’d be. A whale,” she said. When asked why, she added, “I love whales. I’ve loved whales since I was a little girl.”
“She wants to touch one one day,” Michelle Williams jumped in to provide further context. Later, Williams said she’d like to be a black panther “because when they step, they step better than I do.”
If all this reminds you of getting high in college dorm rooms and talking nonsense, you’re not alone. For years, many, including the Beyhive, assumed Destiny’s Child was stoned as hell while giving this interview. They were after all in Amsterdam.

But in a new interview with Elle Canada, Queen Bey finally dismissed the long-gestating rumors. Instead of a traditional cover profile, Elle Canada had Beyoncé answer questions submitted by her fans. Wouldn’t you know it someone asked about if you could be an animal for a day, would you still be a whale?

“I still love whales. And I love being in the ocean. And that video was after a 16-hour press day,” Beyoncé responded. “Not marijuana!!”
There you have it. Beyoncé just loves whales. As the saying goes, though, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend. Sorry Bey, but we’re going to keep on believing the legend on this one.
