Every young boy with an imagination dreams of blowing shit up. What can we say? As a former young boy (though my ex-girlfriends would disagree on the “former” part), we can’t help ourselves. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish foundation, one young boy got to live out his fantasy.
The Make-A-Wish is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses, providing light and joy to kids and their families during their tough times. Twelve-year-old Declan was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, but is now in remission. To lighten his recovery, Make-A-Wish and the Australian Federal Police granted his simple request.
“My name is Declan, I’m 12, and my wish was to blow something up,” he told Sky News.
Declan traveled to AFP’s Specialist Response Group at its Majura headquarters in Canberra, spending the day at one of their training villages. There he ran through several police scenarios, and detonated several explosive charges.
“He’s got an aptitude,” Sergeant Peter Murphy said. “I’m not sure what he actually expected, but once he started functioning a couple … he was getting into it.”
Declan’s family was very thankful for the AFP and Make-A-Wish foundation in helping his explosive dreams come true. Much to his and his family’s surprise, Declan also went to Australia’s Parliament house, where he met Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove. It’s likely a day the young boy will never forget.
It was beyond our expectation.” Declan’s mother Belinda said. “He wanted to just blow something up and he did that. Which is awesome.”
