Roger Daltrey Really Hates You Smoking Weed

Marijuana makes all music sound better, so you’d think even if the musicians performing at a concert don’t partake themselves, they’d at least encourage its usage. Artists want fans to like their music, right? Well, there seems to be an exception with The Who’s Roger Daltrey, who is not a fan of the green.

At a recent Madison Square Garden performance, Daltrey stopped the performance to speak directly to fans. At first it seemed like he was offering the usual pleasantries artists shout at fans to keep them engaged and appreciated. But Daltrey’s comments quickly became a rant about people smoking weed at the concert.

“Thank you so much for coming. I’ve gotta tell you, all the ones smoking grass down in front here: I’m totally allergic to it. I’m not kidding,” he said. “Whoever it is down there, you fucked my night. You made me really—I’m allergic to that, and my voice just goes [slurping sound], it sucks up. So fuck you!”

As SPIN Magazine pointed out, this isn’t the first time Daltrey’s chastised fans for lighting up. During a May 2015 performance at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum, Daltrey threatened to walk off stage when he could smell pungent wafts of marijuana smoke hitting his nostrils. In the recording, you can hear The Who singer ask the fan to eat their joint and when they don’t comply, he recommends them to instead “stick it up your ass!”

Let this be a lesson to all fans of The Who that might see them on tour this year: If you want to enjoy marijuana at their concert, maybe buy a ticket away from the stage. Or take an edible instead.
