Here’s Why The Colorado Gov. Is Threatening to Veto Cannabis Clubs

Plans to bring cannabis clubs to Denver hit a snag this week Gov. John Hickenlooper threatened to veto the bill unless a key provision was added, the Denver Post reports.

A measure that would legalize pot clubs won preliminary approval in the state Senate on Wednesday, but Hickenlooper wants a provision added that the social clubs would only allow smoking outdoors.

“We went to an amazing amount of trouble to say that we are not going to have smoking in workplaces in Colorado,”he told the Post. “Smoking is bad for you — very bad for you.”

Last month, bipartisan members of the Colorado Legislature began to examine the possibility of creating the social clubs—which would essentially function like bars—out of concern that people were getting high in public.
