This is because an unpollinated female cannabis plant has more terpenes and cannabinoids compared to its pollinated counterpart.

A drug that dramatically reduces the risk of COVID-19 is now in circulation for everyone. Paxlovid has been around for a while, yet people still don’t know of its existence or are confused by its effects.
Paxlovid is a Pfizer drug and it’s been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19 by 90%. It must be taken within five days of displaying initial COVID-19 symptoms, meaning that, unlike vaccines, it’s not preventative. As of this week, the drug is now widely available, found in pharmacies across states.
Paxlovid was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December of last year. Despite its high effectiveness, in April, NPR reported that the White House was designing a plan to get people to learn more about the drug, including making it more available in pharmacies.
Newsday reports that a lot of pharmacy workers don’t know the drug or have had trouble receiving it. “Only a minority of the people who might benefit are getting it at the present time,” said Dr. Bruce Farber, chief of public health and epidemiology at Northwell Health, who’s been prescribing the drugs to his patients.
While the drug is recommended for people over the age of 65 or patients with comorbidities, it’s up to the physician’s discretion whether or not to prescribe it. Despite targeting a subset of people who are normally at higher risk for worse COVID-19 infections, there’s still a lot of reticence from people who don’t trust the drug because they’ve never heard of it.
NPR explained that the process of getting the drugs was complicated, especially since it needs to be taken within five days of initial COVID-19 symptoms. “So it is a race to get a COVID test, get someone to prescribe it, find a pharmacy that actually carries it and then start taking it,” said White House correspondent Tamara Keith.

Legal marijuana has changed the way people think about cannabis, leading to a shift in the way in which it’s marketed. A new study demonstrates the ways in which cannabis is promoted on social media apps, and how this has opened up the market to include people who don’t fit the typical stoner stereotype.
The study, published in Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal, found that women have slowly introduced themselves into the equation, disrupting what’s traditionally thought of as a cannabis consumer. These women promote cannabis in different ways, incorporating it into their daily lives and activities.
Researchers used Instagram as their social media platform of choice, analyzing illegal sellers in Switzerland with “cannabis influencers” in the U.S., and spotting their differences. Researchers found that cannabis influencers were challenging what has long been considered appealing to cannabis markets, something that could have a global impact.

“Our findings show that cannabis influencers on Instagram are changing the stereotypical characteristics of illegal cannabis culture as being almost entirely dominated by men, to one where cannabis is represented as a desirable accessory in certain feminine lifestyles,” write the study’s researchers. These influencers painted cannabis as an activity that can be pursued by mothers, people who are invested in their physical and mental health, and more.
Study authors recognize how cannabis influencers have had to get creative on platforms like Instagram considering how the app prevents its sale and censors its content. In their posts, influencers make it clear that they’re not selling cannabis and are simply endorsing it, tying it to appealing images and to a lifestyle that other people are interested in replicating.
“When cannabis is marketed by legal influencers rather than illegal dealers, we find a shift in the use of symbols related to amateurism versus professionalism, intimacy and lifestyle and argue that these changes are bound up with how the influencers do gender differently than sellers,” explain the researchers (via Marijuana Moment).
Marijuana use has evolved over the years, becoming less of a taboo topic and something that can be discussed and consumed openly. In places where the drug is legal, it makes sense then that social media users promote it as something that’s just another activity to partake in.
Medical marijuana can help those suffering from cancer-associated pain, as per a new Technion study published Friday in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. Almost half of the patients enrolled in the research discontinued their other pain medication after six months of medical cannabis treatment, reported The Jerusalem Post.
“Traditionally, cancer-related pain is mainly treated by opioid analgesics, but most oncologists perceive opioid treatment as hazardous, so alternative therapies are required,” said author David Meiri, an assistant professor at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology.
According to the peer-reviewed research, medical cannabis helps lower the pain in oncology patients while also alleviating other symptoms as well. Patients fighting cancer are known to also suffer from depression, anxiety and insomnia, which can also negatively impact the treatment and prognosis.
While opioids are effective in reducing pain, they have numerous negative side effects. For example, the synthetic opioid fentanyl is highly addictive and can cause death by overdose. The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid crisis with at least 100,000 overdose deaths over the course of 12 months.
To address this, federal health officials signaled in October that they are willing to try new approaches to stem the tragedy. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra announced that the Biden administration’s strategy to deal with the epidemic could include allowing supervised consumption sites.
New Research Offers New Hope
It seems that this new Israeli research also provides hope that medical marijuana can be utilized as an alternative to opioids.
The study included certified oncologists who prescribed medical marijuana to their patients and reported on their progress.
“Patients completed anonymous questionnaires before starting treatment, and again at several time points during the following six months,” said study co-author Gil Bar-Sela, associate professor at the Ha’Emek Medical Center Afula. “We gathered data on a number of factors, including pain measures, analgesics consumption, cancer symptom burden, sexual problems and side effects.”

After analyzing all gathered data, the results revealed that the patients notably improved, and more importantly, their opioid use was considerably reduced.
“Although our study was very comprehensive and presented additional perspectives on medical cannabis, the sex, age, and ethnicity, as well as cancer types and the stage of cancer meant the variety of patients in our study was wide-ranging,” Meiri said. “Therefore, future studies should investigate the level of effectiveness of medicinal cannabis in specific subgroups of cancer patients with more shared characteristics.”
Previous Studies On Marijuana And Cancer
Colon Cancer: In March, An Israeli biotech company that develops medical products based on cannabis and fungal extracts, Cannabotech reported cell model study results showing that its “Integrative-Colon” products killed over 90% of colon cancer cells. The Integrative-Colon products are based on a combination of several cannabinoids from the cannabis plant and various mushroom extracts.
Pancreatic Cancer: Experiments conducted on a cell model, showed that a botanical drug based on an extract of the Cyathus striatus fungus and a cannabinoid extract from the cannabis plant eliminated 100% of pancreatic cancer cells relatively selectively and without damaging normal cells. The results were revealed in April.
Breast Cancer: A study published in December and conducted by Hadassah Medical Center physicians, revealed a sixfold improvement in killing breast cancer cells when using specific Cannabotech’s medical cannabis products in combination with standard oncology treatments and drug protocols – chemotherapy, biological and hormonal, over the existing treatment.
There are many more tight races, and several more states whose marijuana legalization may depend on election night outcomes in November.
The midterm primary season is officially in full swing. Several major races have already concluded, and there is a lot to unpack when analyzing the outcomes and the margins of victory.
Several states that have not legalized marijuana for recreational use, or for any use, now have their official candidates for the November election. There are both incumbents who likely offer little change to current policy, and newcomers who may completely shift the trajectory of marijuana policy in their states.

Texas
Texas can’t seem to stay out of the news these days when it comes to many current political issues. Marijuana is no exception. While the conservative Texas Governor Greg Abbott won his primary by a huge margin, he now faces a worthy adversary in Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke.
O’Rourke also won his primary by a large margin, and unlike Abbott, is a huge proponent of marijuana legalization. According to his campaign website, “When I’m governor, we will legalize marijuana and expunge the records of those arrested for marijuana possession.”
While Texas almost always leans Republican, O’Rourke is likely to give some of the toughest competition the Republicans have seen in recent history. If he pulls an upset, the trajectory of marijuana legislation in the state could completely shift.

Austin Votes To Decriminalize Weed
An overwhelming 85% of voters in Austin supported a measure to decriminalize marijuana. The ordinance, which will become law, will prohibit Austin police officers from issuing citations or make arrests for Class A or Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana offenses, except for limited circumstances.
This measure may only change laws in Austin, but don’t forget Austin is the Texas capital. Changes like this may spark debate, and may bring the issue to the main stage during the general election.
Pennsylvania
The Senate Republican primary may have been too close to call, but Democratic primary was a landslide victory for John Fetterman.
Fetterman has been very outspoken about being an advocate for marijuana legalization. Some are pointing to his victory as a message that states, and American’s in general, are eager for marijuana legalization.
“John’s overwhelming victory in the primary should send a message to candidates of all political persuasions across the country,” said NORML PAC Executive Director Erik Altieri. As the Republican race heads to an uncertain recount, and with Fetterman emerging as a formidable contender, Altieri believes this victory sends a message to the establishment to, “get on the right side of history or lose to someone with the courage of their convictions.”
Other Races To Watch
Ohio Senate Race
The Republican primary victor, and bestselling author of “Hillbilly Elegy” J.D. Vance will face off against Democratic congressman Tim Ryan. While Vance has not been outspoken about cannabis legalization, Ryan has. Ryan is in favor of marijuana legalization and also voted in favor of the MORE Act.
North Carolina Senate Race
Many eyes are on the North Carolina Senate Race, as the current senator, Richard Burr, is retiring. The Democratic primary winner, Cheri Beasley, would be the first black woman to serve as senator in North Carolina. Beasley also said “It’s past time we legalize & regulate cannabis in NC,” on Twitter.

Adult-use marijuana sales in Massachusetts have officially surpassed $3 billion, according to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission.
According to the agency, the market has reached $3,001,846,490 in sales of recreational cannabis since its legalization in December 2016. There are reported 216 cannabis retailers and 11 delivery businesses.
The Cannabis Control Commission has shown steady growth in marijuana sales, highlighting that eight months ago the state’s sales exceeded $2 billion. During the 4/20 holiday this year, the total profit was $5,986,186 in one day.
These skyrocketing sales in the cannabis market go along with general success in sales in different states. It is important to take into consideration that states with legal marijuana have collectively generated more than $3.7 billion in tax revenue, in comparison with last year.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the most widely researched compounds in the cannabis plant, and for good reason. CBD is renowned for its anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic, and anti-epileptic properties while THC gives users the high we all so love, but also has powerful therapeutic benefits.

However, in recent years, researchers have discovered there are other notable compounds in cannabis which are just as important as CBD and THC. In fact, many are even more significant for some people depending on the their conditions. Because of this, cannabis product manufacturers have been zoning in on cannabinoids and terpenes offering subtle yet powerful healing properties you may be interested in exploring.
Consumers who live in states with legalized medical or recreational marijuana can find an abundance of oils, food products, drinks, and even lotions powered by terpenes or cannabinoids. These are alongside CBD and/or THC, are on the rise. Most consumers seek out products specifically for the CBD and THC.
Terpenes
Terpenes are compounds in plants responsible for its aroma and flavor profile. These occur naturally in plants, and they served an evolutionary purpose: to ward off predators or attract pollinators.

There are some 50,000 known terpenes today, but the cannabis plant has around 250, though scientists may soon discover more. Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are unique, naturally-occurring compounds in the cannabis plant. While scientists currently know of almost 500 different cannabinoids, we have only identified around 70 of them.
The most famous of these is of course, THC, which is the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of the plant. CBD is the second most famous, which we mentioned earlier. All cannabinoids work by interacting with the cannabinoid receptors found outside of cells in the human body, most of which are concentrated in the central nervous system. The cannabinoid receptors are known as CB1 and CB2.
Just like terpenes, there are specific cannabinoid products now available on the market. Each of them have their own cannabinoid profile which has various benefits for the human mind and body.

CBG: Cannabigerol (CBG) is the grandfather of THC and CBD, because chemically speaking, it serves as the foundation and building block which the cannabis plant uses to produce these other compounds. However, on its own, research shows it may have numerous benefits especially for anxiety, treating IBS, tumors, and bacterial conditions.
THCV: Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) possesses a similar molecular makeup with THC, though it has less carbon atoms. It can potentially be intoxicating though since it’s so little, it’s nearly impossible to feel anything. It’s widely used as an appetite suppressant, so if you are trying to lose a little weight, it would be beneficial to look for products with THCV. Research has shown it can also be beneficial for diabetics in managing blood glucose.
