Indie
Angel Olsen – All Mirrors
Angel Olsen has a special talent for making songs that are bangers while also challenging listeners and never talking down to them. Ethereal and ambitious, “All Mirrors” flows from verse to verse with swells of music and appearances of instruments that are never expected. It’s a song that can best be summed up by the word “alien” and one that’s hard to compare to her previous work. Her new album comes out October 4th.
Pop
Lana Del Rey – Season of the Witch

This new version of “Season of the Witch” was developed for the soundtrack of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, the latest Guillermo Del Toro produced film. The original song, written and interpreted by Donovan in 1966, had a bigger focus on rock and guitars. The new version works great, being less repetitive but just as languid as what you’d expect from Del Rey. “Season of the Witch” is a nice addition to her oeuvre.
Hip Hop
Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign – Hot Girl Summer
“Hot Girl Summer” is the most positive summer meme in recent memory while also being the name of a hit song, which should be unprecedented. The phrase became popular way before the release of the song, after Megan Thee Stallion and her fans began to spread the phrase around, referring to owning summer and being happy without caring about the opinions of other people. The song, featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, is surprisingly tame but very fun and summery. How could it not be?
