Arkansas passed another hurdle in its landmark path to constructing a statewide medical marijuana protocol. This past Thursday the state’s Board of Health unanimously approved rules and regulations with regards to marijuana registration cards as well as testing and labeling the product.
Those applying for cards will require state-issued identification and provide written certification from a doctor to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. Symptoms included under these guidelines are Crohn’s disease, cancer, arthritis, chronic pain, and more. Those under the age of 18 can still apply for a card but will need parental consent to obtain the card.
The regulations set forth will also allow visitors carrying cards from outside legalized states to purchase medicinal marijuana within Arkansas. It will also authorize caregivers to purchase marijuana on behalf of those suffering from ailments.
Arkansas voters passed the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment in November, legalizing the sale and possession of medical marijuana within the state. The amendment made Arkansas the first Bible Belt state to vote yes on legalizing marijuana of any kind.

These state regulations will now move on to the Legislative Council for final approval in May, the Department of Health’s chief attorney Robert Brech said to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission, created by the amendment, passed rules for licensing of cannabis cultivation facilities and dispensaries. They are expected to begin accepting license applications starting July 1.
