With recent affair allegations surrounding Prince William (he’s said to have hooked-up with socialite and family friend Rose Hanbury), some are starting to look back at the shaky beginning of William and Kate’s relationship.
The two began dating while attending University of Saint Andrews, but broke up briefly in 2007 before getting married four years later. And now we may know why.

According to a documenter titled “Prince William at Thirty,” the future King had a wandering eye, which was caught by paparazzi. (Oh, the woes of being famous!) Specifically, Will dancing with a “mystery” blonde. When Kate saw the photos, she reportedly told William that “you can’t have it both ways.” His response? He implemented a break in their relationship.
During an interview with William after they announced their engagement, Kate said she appreciates that time apart from her now husband, saying, “I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger and I really valued that time for me as well – although I didn’t think it at the time.”
It’s also been reported that the “mystery” woman isn’t really a mystery, and that William had a known crush on a woman named Isabella Calthorpe, who went on to marry the son of business magnate and Virgin founder Richard Branson. Isabella’s half-sister, Cressida Bonas, famously dated Prince Harry from 2012 to 2014.

Back in 2007, a royal source told the The Daily Mail, “[William] had fallen for [Isabella] in a huge way and wanted to be with her. He propositioned her several times that summer and although Isabella was single, she knocked William back and said it would be too damaging for her and her career. She is a name in her own right and on her way to becoming hugely successful. In her view, being affiliated with William in a girlfriend capacity would be damaging for her.”
This career the royal source speak of is acting. Her IMDB isn’t long, but she’s starred in a decent number of films such as How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, Night Wolf and the TV series Trinity.
It’s been reported the Isabella is the only woman Kate has ever really been jealous of because she knew how much William was into her.
But oddly enough, just like Cressida attended ex Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, Isabella attended Kate and Will’s royal wedding. These royals really know how to keep it interesting!
