There A Word For When Your Ex Reappears

Ho ho hold it right there. The relationship ended a long time ago and now you want back in? What is it about the holidays that makes us want to get back together with an ex? Oh, right. Loneliness.

A new term has surfaced for those looking for a second, if not brief chance at getting back together with their SO: Marleying. The name is a nod to Jacob Marley —the former business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge who appears from beyond the grave on Christmas Eve.

According to The Independent, one in ten singles will be Marley’d this year by exes looking for a holiday hookup. They spoke to a 31-year-old guy who attempted to explain the festive association by saying it’s a time for reflection:

With social media it’s so easy to indulge these curiosities, and it can often lead to taking that extra step and actually making contact. I’ve been contacted by exes who’ve wanted to meet for drinks on trips back to my hometown from London, and I’ve also done it myself.

And when everyone returns home for the holidays, the perfect storm takes shape.

Rachael Lloyd from dating site eHarmony recommends this snap back to reality: “Often relationships end for valid reasons such as a lack of compatibility. If this sounds familiar, rather than revisiting a relationship where the same issues could arise all over again, we would suggest spending time with family and friends and enjoying a well-earned break.”

She says going backwards only decreases the odds of finding a new, long-lasting relationship.
