Republican strategist David Avella said people on the streets of San Francisco are shooting up weed. Say, what?
You learn something new every day in this life. Take for instance this recent revelation from David Avella, a Republican strategist, when he appeared on FOX News this week—people living on the streets of San Francisco are now shooting up marijuana.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard anyone shooting up weed before. Yeah? Us neither.
A little more context is necessary here. Avella, who serves as the president of GOPAC, was on the FOX News program “Outnumbered”. During his appearance, he brought up a new resolution from San Francisco officials that recommended felons and former prisoners go by a different name. Instead, call them a “formerly incarcerated person” or “returning resident” or a formerly “justice-involved” person.

While perhaps this resolution can come across as silly, it does confront the problem many former convicts face when returning to society. Stigmas abound and ex-cons have difficulty finding jobs as a result. But Avella believes this resolution from San Francisco was instead creating more problems for the city that remain unaddressed—including homeless people shooting up marijuana.
“California has tried to clear out their prisons and yet every year they continue to have overcrowded prisons,” Avella said. “And the focus ought to be on a society that follows the law, not allowing people to defecate in the streets, not allowing individuals to lay on the street having just shot up with marijuana.”

The FOX News quickly jumped in to correct Avella, with a couple of them suggesting he meant “heroin” instead.
“Heroin,” he nods, then continues past his blunder. “…and having a needle sticking out of them. We ought to be focused on solving crimes.”

As you might imagine, word quickly spread across social media, where users were quick to have fun on Avella’s behalf.
I pivoted from edibles to straight up mainlining back in ‘87. Best decision I ever made. https://t.co/0ZSZh8EhKL
