Hear How Dreamy Modern Music Played On A Traditional Korean Instrument Can Be

Musician and YouTuber Luna Lee has been out here since 2009, covering everything from Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan to ZZ Top and the Eagles. If your uncle has the cassette tape in the glove compartment of his ‘83 Accord, she’s probably covered it. Lynyrd Skynyrd? Free Bird forever. AC/DC? She’s back in black.

She plays a gayageum, or kayagum, a traditional Korean stringed instrument. Luna writes on her Patreon page:

My ancestors played the gayageum in a small room, so the sound did not need to be loud. But my music is performed with modern instruments such as the drums, bass and the guitar. So I had to redevelop my gayageum so that the sound would match that of the modern instrument. I had to increase the volume and pressure, develop tone and increase the sustain sound. And hoping to express the sound of gayageum more diversely like that of the guitar, I had to study guitar effectors and amplifiers and test them to see if they would fit to the sound of the gayageum. Playing modern music on a traditional instrument was not an easy process. I have come a long way from the beginning but still have a long way to go!

But it’s not just dad rock: Luna performs a haunting version of Adele’s “Hello,” and a predictably lovely cover of “Hallelujah.” Her latest is a cover of the Foo Fighters’ song “Everlong,” and it bangs as hard as a Foo Fighters song can, however hard that is:

She’s raising money to buy better recording equipment and software, so if you dig this, you can donate to support her musical endeavors.
