How Rising Levels Of Anxiety In Teens Might Support The Rise Of CBD

People have never been more transparent about their mental health issues than they are today. And encouragement from a variety of sources — clothing brands, restaurants, apps and more — have made us all aware of mental health diseases that were previously kept under wraps. What previous generations deemed as private have now become a source of unending memes.

People below the age of 30 are reaping the benefits of this culture while also coming forward with their own stories of mental health. Stats and data show that anxiety and stress levels in teens are on the rise, perhaps because they’re encouraged to report these feelings. These stats are interesting when you consider that alcohol consumption, underage sex and cigarette use have been steadily decreasing.

Per the CDC:

  • The percentage of students who’ve tried alcohol is down 26% since 1991.
  • The percentage who’ve tried cigarettes is down 41%.
  • The percentage who were offered, sold or given illegal drugs at school is down 17.5%.
  • The percentage who’ve had sex is down 27%.

Although teens are engaging in less risky activities, they have more than enough reasons to be stressed. Mass school shootings, climate change, uncertain politics, and an awakening of feminist and queer ideologies are all factors that teens are reckoning with, to degrees that older generations can’t understand.

While finding a cure for this wave of mental health issues is extremely hard, understanding why this is happening can help us see why the term“wellness” has been so heavily utilized lately. Teens are growing into adults who are very aware of their mental impairments and the issues they’ve faced in the past.

While CBD is new and unpredictable, its focus on wellness is paying off. Businesses that range from Burger King to Hulu are stepping in on the wellness trend too, suggesting that this is the way to get people to purchase your product. While the voraciousness with which CBD has been embraced might suggest that it’s a fad, it is still a product that could surprise us. At the end of the day, it bridges two timely topics: wellness and cannabis.
