These Are The Top 5 Perks Young Professionals Want At Work

0

Do you realize that the average professional spends about half of their waking adult life working? That sucks. It also makes you realize that if you’re going to put in that many hours, you better enjoy it as much as possible. With that in mind, LinkedIn surveyed their half a billion LinkedIn members to find out what it takes for them to get out of bed every day.

Here are the results of their study which finds the necessities from yesteryear are no longer relevant today (other than the “work hard, make money” cliché that might never change). Here are the top 5 characteristics professionals want in a job.

Flexibility

Today’s workers demand flexibility in their schedule. In fact, more than a third (34%) of professionals would take a 10% pay-cut in exchange for being their own boss. Only 4% want a corner office. And 86% don’t care if their peers admire their career.

Financial Stability…And Then Some

Passion smassion. LinkedIn found that two out of five professionals don’t put a lot of stock in being passionate about their job. For 69% of respondents, they work simply to pay the bills. And for nearly three-quarters (74%) of professionals polled, even that’s not enough. They work hard at several jobs so they don’t have to worry about money at all.

As LinkedIn explains, “This motivation is helping to usher in the age of the side hustle. Whether it’s moonlighting in an art gallery or building websites on the weekends, more than one-third of professionals today (36%) find success in pursuing a passion project or side job.

To Be An Inspiration To Others

The majority of professionals (87%) report wanting to feel that they’re an inspiration to others over accomplishments. Nearly 40% of professionals say they feel most successful when teaching others. If you want to volunteer, you can check out resources like the LinkedIn Volunteer Marketplace to see how your skills align with nearby volunteer opportunities, and LinkedIn Career Advice which connects you with mentorship opportunities.

New Skills

Learning a new skill set on the job is the top priority for professionals in 2018. Almost 90 percent (89%) feel that skills are even more important than job titles.

Open Relationship

Almost two-thirds (65%) of American professionals say they like to keep their job options open in order to beat career FOMO. To stay ahead of the game, they are motivated to network inside and outside of the workplace. So, even if they’re not technically in the office, they’re still working (it).

5 Weird Things That Happen To Your Body When It’s Cold Outside

0

For all of us who are cursed by living in a place where there are seasons, there are still a few months where we must endure the bitter cold. While the snow is lovely and the chill can be pleasant, subzero temperatures are painful and hard to cope with, and they also come with a side of mental and physical effects.

The Huffington Post consulted with Dr. Albert Ahn, a clinical instructor from NYU Langone Health, who claims that it’s important to know all the changes you’re body goes through during the winter, so you’re prepared and can face these challenges accordingly.

Check out 5 changes that you’re body endures once the winter kicks in:

You Burn More Calories

https://giphy.com/gifs/gutearbeitoriginals-snow-winter-d3mlmtNPoxNrt4Bi

Your basal metabolic rate works harder to keep you warm, burning more calories in the meantime. Dr. Ahn warns that this difference is not enough to account for weight loss, so you still gotta go to the gym and move around.

Pain In Your Extremities

Some people experience Raynaud’s disease, a condition where your body feels numb due to the extreme weather conditions. This sensation usually affects your ears, hands and feet, and is due to smaller arteries constricting excessively due to the cold.

Your Vision Suffers

https://giphy.com/gifs/angietribecatbs-l41YAqGPwuC833OQ8

Exposure to extreme temperature can damage your eyes, and snow may even cause a cornea injury or burn. If there’s a big snowstorm or if you practice snow sports it’s very important to wear the necessary eye protection.

Greater Risk For Heart Attack

For older adults and for people who have cardiac problems, the winter season can increase the chances of having a heart attack. This is due to the body’s pressure on the heart due to the fact that it’s working harder to pump blood into your extremities.

Your Mood May Shift

SAD and the winter blues are real things that people face every year. Ahn recommends exercise, exposure to the daylight, tons of Vitamin D, and plenty of interaction with family and friends.

This Young British Royal Just Announced Her Engagement

Two months after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, another royal has announced her plans to marry.

Buckingham Palace says that 27-year-old Princess Eugenie will be walking down the aisle this fall, just months after her cousin’s nuptials.

Eugenie, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, will marry long-term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank.

Brooksbank is a brand ambassador for George Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila. He and Eugenia, whom he met in 2010, got engaged while on holiday in Nicaragua earlier in January. He proposed with a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

During an interview with the BBC, Eugenia said:

The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said this is an incredible moment, and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years.

The couple’s ceremony will take place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, the same place as Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May.

Eugenie is the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and is eighth in line to the throne. She’s the second child of Andrew and Fergie.

Marijuana-Pharmaceutical Interactions: What You Need To Know

Interactions between medications are very common, especially in elderly populations that medicate for pain, diabetes and high cholesterol. The geriatric population is also the fastest-growing group of medical cannabis users. Cannabis has demonstrated efficacy in treating pain, and some phytocannabinoids have been suggested for various metabolic conditions. Thus it is important to understand how cannabinoids can interact with common pharmaceuticals, both to predict and prevent negative interactions, while taking advantage of situations where cannabis and pharmaceuticals act synergistically.

Drug interactions can be both useful and dangerous. A drug that potentiates an opiate, for example, may increase the painkilling effect, but could also increase the likelihood of overdose. Or a second analgesic could allow the dose of an opiate to be reduced, which would slow tolerance and decrease other side effects.

But understanding all the convergent biological pathways of two drugs is difficult. Examining the metabolic interactions between drugs is one way to generically predict drug interactions: since more than half of all pharmaceuticals are metabolized by a family of enzymes called cytochrome P450 (CYP), knowing how cannabinoids affect CYPs provides a good first approximation to phytocannabinoid-drug interactions. In general, inhibiting the CYPs that metabolize a pharmaceutical will increase its blood concentration, leading to an increase in both effects and toxicity. But for prodrugs—which are metabolized into the active compound—inhibition of metabolism will decrease both the desired and adverse effects. And the interaction can change from inhibition to activation with different drugs. Due to complications like these, it is much easier to predict whether drug interactions are likely than to predict their exact effect.

This review will describe potential cannabinoid-drug interactions in the context of treating pain (with opiates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and metabolic disorders (using insulin, warfarin and statins). Owing to the highly complicated role of cannabinoids in the cardiovascular system—with at least four cannabinoid-like receptors initiating changes in the vasculature, multiple phases to the effects, and opposing effects under normal, stressed and pathological conditions–cannabinoid interactions with drugs used to treat hypertension are beyond the scope of this article …

New Directive Encourages Vets To Talk Cannabis With Their Doctors

Many vets will first be testing the waters with their doctors before jumping into the conversation, the new directive a handy floatation device.

A new directive from the Veterans Health Administration suggests that vets be open with their doctors about their cannabis use. While on the surface this seems like a step in the right direction for cannabis reform, it’s confusing and potentially harmful to vets with doctors who don’t agree with the use of medical marijuana.

As it is, Veterans have a tight lipped stance when it comes to most VA doctors. That’s because many have lost their pain management or know a vet who has and they keep that in mind when discussing cannabis. Many with chronic pain know they’ll at least be taken off opiates if they test positive for cannabis during a urine screening.

Even though the new directive encourages open discussion, two major problems loom. One is the recent actions of Attorney General Jeff Sessions in rescinding an Obama era piece of legislation called the Cole memo. The Cole memo kept federal prosecutors from coming down on cannabis businesses that were compliant with state laws. The other problem is marijuana’s rank as a Schedule I drug.

To be a Schedule I drug, a substance must have no known medical benefits and have a high potential for abuse. Cannabis doesn’t fit the bill on either of those, yet its scheduling is a main argument for those on the anti-pot side of the argument.

And even with having given the new guidance, the Veterans Health Administration’s position hasn’t changed. Until cannabis is descheduled, the VA cannot recommend marijuana as a treatment for pain, PTSD or even cancer and chemotherapy side effects. In other words, patients have to ask themselves what the point of bringing it up might be.

Then again, many patients and doctors see the new recommendation as a good thing, citing the fact that a doctor should know about everything that their patient is taking and for what. Which is hard to argue.

It’s a sticky subject with no clear answer, though it seems that the best path to take is the one of honesty, especially with the new directive. Many vets will first be testing the waters with their doctors before jumping into the conversation, the new directive a handy floatation device.

Gossip: Megan Markle All Alone In London; Fox News Thinks RuPaul’s Last Name Is Paul

Insiders add that Megan thinks it is all worth it to be with Harry, but there are days when she is very lonely.

Megan Markle is getting ready to become a princess but the cost has been very high and has left her very lonely.

“With the exception of Harry, Megan is all alone in London. She doesn’t have any long-time friends or family in the country and although his family has been very welcoming, they are all strangers to her,” sources tell Straight Shuter. “Leaving your country and everyone you know can be very difficult. Add to that that she is marrying a Prince, has made it impossible to meet and find new friends.”

Insiders add that Megan thinks it is all worth it to be with Harry, but there are days when she is very lonely.

Fox News Thinks RuPaul’s Last Name Is Paul

Fox News posted an article on former House speaker Nancy Pelosi. In the post, the writer decided to mention that Pelosi would be a guest judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race : All Stars 3.”

‘Pelosi will be on the runway to judge Paul’s collection of drag queens for an episode of the series’ upcoming return,’ they wrote.

‘For those unfamiliar with the show, it takes various drag queens and assigns them various challenges each episode that Paul and other judges then use to decide who wins.’

RuPaul was born RuPaul Andre Charles. His Louisiana-born mother named him after roux, which is an ingredient used to thicken sauces.

RuPaul says that his mother made an announcement at his birth saying, “His name is RuPaul Andre Charles and he’s gonna be a star, ’cause ain’t another mother f**ker alive with a name like that!”
And RuPaul proved her right.

5 Reasons To Share Your Stash With Grandma And Grandpa

The senior set is consuming cannabis in record numbers. “Given the unprecedented aging of the US population, we are facing a never before seen cohort of older adults who use recreational drugs,” said Dr. Benjamin Han, a geriatrician and health services researcher at New York University.

The reason for the skyrocketing consumption among older Americans is clear: It’s a medicine. And, as Paul Armentano, deputy director of NORML, reminds us, cannabis is typically prescribed to manage diseases that often strike in older age, pointing to an increasing desire to take a medication that has fewer side effects than traditional prescription drugs.

So the next time you are visiting with your grandparents, consider taking along a little extra to share. You also may want to talk to them about a few reasons why sharing your stash may be good for their health.

Treatment For Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that kills brain cells. It is the most common form of dementia, affecting five million Americans, and it kills about one out of three seniors, which makes it the sixth leading cause of death.

Multiple studies suggest that cannabis is an effective treatment for patients suffering from this hideous ailment. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease revealed that THC helped decrease delusions, agitation or aggression, irritability, apathy, and sleep disturbance in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 2006 study showed that THC stimulated appetite and reduced nighttime agitation, providing relief not only for Alzheimer’s patients but for their caregivers.

Just a small dose of cannabis a day may help delay the aging process in the brain and improve memory in older adults, according to a new study published Monday in Nature MedicineAs the Baby Boomer generation ages into retirement, there will be a massive number of potential victims of this dreaded disease.

Maintaining A Healthy Body Weight

For some senior citizens maintaining a healthy body weight is a major health issue. For many, weight gain and obesity becomes a problem as more seniors become more sedentary. Also, the side effects of some prescription medication include lack of motivation or tiredness.

For other seniors, gradual weight loss is an issue. Again, some pharmaceuticals inhibit appetite. And then there are those whose weight yo-yos, which has its own health risks.

Cannabis, of course, has long been considered an appetite stimulant. Marijuana has been used for decades to help those suffering from AIDS, wasting syndrome and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

Research has revealed that cannabis helps patients regulate their weight and promotes increased levels of HDL cholesterol (the so-called good cholesterol) which lowers the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Relief From Arthritic Pain

Arthritis is one of the most common health ailments in the world, with more than 50 million people affected in the U.S. alone. Researchers at the University of Nottingham noted that targeting cannabinoid receptors with marijuana may help bring pain relief to knee joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.

A Chinese study showed that joints damaged by arthritis have a high number of CB2 receptors, which marijuana can activate to fight inflammation and pain. In the case of arthritis and other joint ailments, topicals such as creams, lotions and balms work wonders. And Grandma and Grandpa don’t have to worry at all about getting high.

Help With “The Blues”

It happens to all of us, not just senior citizens. Episodes of depression often sneak up on us and the effect can be debilitating. The World Health Organization reported last year that depression is now the world’s leading cause of poor health. More than 300 million people worldwide suffer from the affliction and the number of people with depression soared 18 percent between 2005 and 2015.

Research suggests that cannabis may be a viable option for depression. A European study suggests that cannabidiol or CBD — a non-psychoactive component of marijuana — is effective in treating anxiety and depression. More clinical studies need to be conducted to determine how effective cannabinoid therapy is in treating depression, but there is evidence that it works.

If your grandparent struggles with depression or just has a difficult time remaining upbeat, you may want to give it a try. Low-dose edibles may do the trick

Transitioning Away From Pharmaceuticals

According to the CDC, most drug overdose deaths (more than 60 percent) involve an opioid with 91 Americans dying every day from an opioid overdose, including prescription opioids and heroin. As America’s opioid abuse epidemic continues to worsen, a 2017 study revealed that medical marijuana may be a potential remedy for pain patients.

The study found that cannabis, in combination with opioid pain medications, can lower opioid side effects, cravings, and withdrawal severity, as well as enhance the analgesic effects of opioids, thereby allowing for lower doses and less risk of overdose. The authors concluded that their results “demonstrate that inhaled cannabis safely augments the analgesic effects of opioids.” Research published last year found that 80 percent of medical cannabis users reported substituting cannabis for prescribed medications, particularly among patients with pain-related conditions.

Your Marijuana Edibles Might Look Different In The Future

Preemptively, the National Association of Cannabis Businesses, the nation’s only self-regulating industry organization, has created national standards for the packaging and labeling of marijuana products.

For years, cannabis opponents have claimed that individual states are unable to adequately protect the public — especially children — from the perceived harms of cannabis legalization. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made it clear he shares this concern earlier this month when he rescinded Obama-era guidelines allowing states to self-regulate its marijuana industry.

In what is seen as a preemptive strike, the National Association of Cannabis Businesses, the nation’s only self-regulating industry organization, has created national standards for the packaging and labeling of marijuana products. In some cases, the NACB guidelines are more rigorous than some state laws, highlighting the industry’s willingness to protect consumers and demonstrating to anti-legalization forces that the industry intends to operate at the highest levels of ethics and responsibility.

“The NACB believes that self-regulation is the most effective course of action for our members to control their own destiny in the face of regulators’ growing need to intervene,” said Andrew Kline, president of the NACB and a former federal prosecutor. “The creation and adoption of national, voluntary standards that are aligned with regulators’ priorities takes input from government, NACB members, and subject matter experts into careful consideration. Through this process, the SRO identified product packaging and labeling as our first priority because it impacts so many issues related to health and safety.”

The new packaging and labeling standard addresses key public health and safety concerns, including:

  • Child-resistant packaging guidelines for all cannabis products.
  • Consistent labeling that identifies the cannabis product’s origin, cultivator and processor.
  • Inclusion of warning statements regarding health risks associated with cannabis consumption, such as advising consumers to not drive or operate heavy machinery while using the product, and that the intoxicating effects of the product may be delayed after consumption.
  • Avoiding packaging and labeling that appeal to minors.
  • Requirements and methods for listing all ingredients present in the product.
  • Inclusion of major food allergen warnings and information on cannabis edibles based upon U.S. Food & Drug Administration guidelines.
  • Guidelines on how to address health and medical claims for cannabis products.
  • Related Story: ‘Not For Kids’ Strict Labeling For Marijuana Products For Washington State

“Consumer education and awareness regarding the effects of cannabis products is a key concern for everyone working in the industry,” said Pete Kadens, co-Founder and CEO of Green Thumb Industries, a member of NABC. “It’s important that all cannabis consumers are made fully aware of what they are purchasing and consuming. Following these product labeling standards will ensure that marijuana products are used safely, are secured in packaging not accessible to anyone under the age of 21, and that consumers have all the information about the product they require.”

NACB has assembled a top-notch collection to create national standards that its founding members — including Dixie Elixers & Edibles, Buds & Roses, Cresco Labs, Green Thumb Industries, Green Dot Labs, Mesa Organics and others. “It’s an entirely new industry — an entirely new legal industry, rather—and it’s so rare that that happens,” said Doug Fischer, the NACB’s chief legal officer. “There are all these historical precedents of industries that have done a good or bad job or regulating themselves. But given the uncertain state of play at the federal level and the fragmented situation at the state level, the time is now for an organization like this in the legal cannabis industry.”

Weed Is Winning: Alcohol Sales Suffering In Legal Marijuana States

It has been said that alcohol and marijuana can coexist as part of the United States SIN market, but that doesn’t mean it is always going to be a peaceful union. Since before California legalized its recreational marijuana sector, Wall Street analysts have been advising clients with booze soaked portfolios to prepare for legal weed to start chipping away at their profits. Now, a new study confirms the slow butchering of the alcohol trade.

Researchers from two US universities and another in South America have determined that the US alcohol market has suffered a 15 percent drop in sales due to the legalization of medical marijuana. A recent report from Forbes suggests this phenomenon is more than just a coincidence. The study, which was conducted using Nielsen retail data from 90 liquor stores, convenience stores and other larger distribution outlets, determined that more people are using medical marijuana as a substitute for booze in states where it is legal.

“The overall conclusion of the study is that marijuana and alcohol are strong substitutes for each other. In other words, they share almost the same audience. If that’s true, then it stands to reason that introducing legal marijuana where alcohol consumption is legal may very well result in a negative effect on alcohol sales,” writes Forbes contributor and wine expert Thomas Pellechia, in his analysis of the study.

“Medical marijuana is legally sold to a small percentage of overall marijuana users, but this study may be an indicator of what the alcohol industry can expect in states where recreational marijuana laws go into effect that will increase legal access to every adult in the state,” he added.

As it stands, 29 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the leaf for medical purposes. Marijuana is also legal for recreational use in a growing number of states, mostly recently California and Nevada. Despite the growls coming from US Department of Justice, the legal marijuana trend is expected to continue growing across the United States. If the contents of the latest study are an accurate snapshot of what is up ahead, the alcohol trade might need to work harder for consumer buzz budgets than it has in the past.

It was just last year that New York Investment firm Cowen Group sent a letter to its clients warning that investments in major beer brands could start to take a backseat to legal marijuana. This situation, which was outlined by Cohen analyst Vivien Azer, reveals that “alcohol could be under pressure for the next decade” … and “the emerging cannabis category could prove more problematic.”

It is for this reason that some alcohol companies are experimenting with fitting in to the legal cannabis sector. Last year, Constellation Brands, which is responsible for Corona, dumped nearly $200 million into a Canadian marijuana company. Their goal is to manufacture and distribute a new line of cannabis-infused beverages when Canada goes fully legal later this year.

In the end, the more successful companies will be the ones that figure out how to reap the economic benefits of both alcohol and legal weed. Aside from Constellation, some wineries are also getting into the business of cannabis. Some of these folks even believe that the legalization of marijuana will eventually contribute to greater profits for the alcohol trade.

Cannabis Investing 101: So You Want To Take Part In The Green Rush

Ever since Colorado legalized weed in 2012 people are seeing green—asking, “Where they should invest in the cannabis industry?” And, they’re right to ask. According to Arcview Market Research legal cannabis sales in 2015 reached close to $7 billion, and are predicting that the overall industry could be worth a whopping $22 billion by 2020, and is showing no signs of slowing down. This past November’s recent election favorably indicates the public’s growing acceptance of cannabis with voters in four states (California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada) approving measures to fully legalize cannabis for adult use; while Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota adopted medical marijuana programs. Half of America live with some form of cannabis program within their state, whether it’s adult use or medical—and more than 60 million Americans can enjoy recreational weed.

John Kagia, Executive Vice President for Industry Analytics with New Frontier Data, recently helped to author the 2016 Cannabis Investor Study, providing valuable and objective research and analysis of the cannabis industry. When asked about the outcome of the recent ballot initiatives Kagia pointed out the bi-partisan nature of cannabis and how “public support has been growing robustly” in more than half of the United States. “We’re seeing affirmative validation that legalization at large has gained momentum,” says Kagia. “This really is a significant catalyst for growth in the industry.”

What’s beautiful about this entirely new industry is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor. “There are few moments in any generation where you’re literally watching the industry being birthed,” says Kagia. Couple that with cannabis finally ditching it’s social stigma and the time is absolutely on point to dive in and invest.

Where to put your money? Here are several ideas to consider when getting started cannabis investing:

Ancillary Businesses

The 2016 Cannabis Investor Study from Arcview Investor Network and New Frontier Data found investors most interested in ancillary commercial products. Anything ranging from vaporizers to LED lights is considered ancillary because they stay far away from touching the plant. These types of companies are great entry points for new cannabis investors because this class of company face “less scrutiny” and offer less “risk exposure” than those that touch the plant, according to Kagia. Given that cannabis is still not regulated federally and instead is guided by individual state law, it’s easier for ancillary services to expand their business state by state since they don’t face cross border problems—making this type of investment attractive for potential investors.

International Markets

Look abroad to Canada and beyond for investment opportunities. New Frontier’s investment study shows 64% of investors favoring opportunities in Canada, compared with the 57 percent of investors who expressed interest in California’s growing market. The same study also showed Israel as good potential, albeit only 34 percent of investors said they were interested, followed by Spain (20%) and Australia (15 percent). Canadian stocks are a safe bet because unlike the US, their Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations program is federally regulated and currently has its eyes on 30+ licensed medical cannabis producers. “So far the Canadian market is well regulated and a national legal market has raised robust interest from a number of sophisticated investors—which will only increase once the government releases their regulations in April 2017,” says Kagia. As for other international markets, Kagia points to Israel with their robust and long withstanding medical program; Australia which just got their medical program off the ground making it the first Asian Pacific country with regulate cannabis; and finally Spain which has piqued the interest of investors who are eyeing it closely for when the market eventually will activate.

Investment Groups

If you have the money to invest, but are unfamiliar with navigating the complexities of the cannabis market—a great place to start are by joining an investment group. Becoming an angel investor allows you to join forces with others who have experience within the space and have already researched, sought out and have teamed up with companies that would benefit from your financial support. “Like Arcview, members get the first stages of due diligence for investment brought to them along with investment targets,” says Kagia. Having an investment group’s expertise at your fingertips provide new investors with a sense of security in their investment, which is a huge benefit especially when the pace of change is so fast in this evolving industry.
