0

Valentine’s Day can be a very romantic date for couples, but it can put a lot of pressure on the relationship, your significant other, and your pocket. It’s hard to come up with romantic plans on the go and most of the time you have to boringly settle with the chocolate and flower route, but we’re here to make sure that this year things will be different.

Here are 5 cheap ways to give your partner the best Valentine’s Day ever. They are list of creative things you can do  which will be sure to surprise your partner and make them wonder how you came up with the idea in the first place.

Cook An Intimate Dinner

Cooking is an every day thing, but cooking for your partner on Valentine’s Day can be super awesome, especially if you go all out and decorate the house with candles and play some background music. Use the most expensive china you have and try to cook the most delicious meal you can. If you’re an average cook try a simple recipe or buy a yummy precooked meal from the supermarket.

Take Care Of Things Around The House

Clean out the fridge and do the dishes, and fix something that’s been bugging your partner around the house. This is an unexpected and simple thing to do that your partner will surely love and that’ll be appreciated in the long run.

Make A Photo Album

Put those pictures you have laying around to good use, or print out some of your favorites and compile a photo album.

Scavenger Hunt

This requires a little more prep and organization, but it’s a gift that’ll demonstrate that you really care about your partner and that you invested some time in them, which is a great way of demonstrating love. This hunt could lead to folded laundry, an organized closet, a delicious meal in the oven, or a nice letter expressing how much you care about them.

Gift Basket

Gift baskets can contain anything, so it’s up to you to know what to put in there. If you don’t want to waste any money, try to find the fanciest unopened items that you have lying around your house. Some nice soap, shampoo, and the fanciest chocolate bars you can find, and you’re all set!

Reality Check: Cigarettes And Pot Linked To Teen Psychosis?

If you have a family history of psychosis, do not consume cannabis (or any medication for that matter) without consulting a doctor.

“Cigarettes and pot linked to teen psychosis,” blared the provocative CNN headline. The worrisome story that followed discussed yet another study, this one published this week in the prestigious journal JAMA Psychiatry, that suggests teen use of marijuana or cigarettes is associated with higher odds of psychotic-like experiences.

According to the study, “Individuals who use either cannabis or cigarettes during adolescence appear to be at increased risk of psychotic experiences, the association of psychotic experiences is greater with cannabis than with tobacco smoking.”

How Worried Should You Be?

Before working yourself up into a panic and flushing all your cannabis down the toilet, it’s important to take a step back. Yes, the data in this study is disturbing, but not exactly shocking. Nearly every doctor warns that cannabis use is unadvised for teens. And you must be 21 or older to purchase cannabis in legal states. Nobody is suggesting recreational teen use is advisable.

Another thing to remember: There are countless studies that suggest no correlation between marijuana and psychosis. Just last year, the journal Addiction published a study that found “in order to prevent just one case of psychosis, more than 20,000 people would have to stop using cannabis.”

In this report, author Ian Hamilton wrote:

“Regulation could help reduce the risks to health that cannabis use poses, as a regulated cannabis market would introduce some quality control. This would provide users with information about the strength of cannabis on offer, something they usually only discover after exposure in the current unregulated market. The public health message about the link between cannabis and psychosis has been a difficult one to communicate, but the evidence still points to the benefits of regulations that seek to advise on the greatest potential health risks, which currently arise due to tobacco use.”

Another report on the topic concludes:

“It is difficult to decide whether cannabis use has had any effects on psychosis incidence, because even if a relationship were to be causal, cannabis use would produce a very modest increase in incidence.”

And yet another study from last year examined how CBD may help psychotic symptoms. According to the report:

Subjects in the CBD treatment group “had lower levels of positive psychotic symptoms and were more likely to have been rated as improved and as not severely unwell by the treating clinician” at the conclusion of the trial. CBD administration was also associated with “improvements in cognitive performance and in the level of overall functioning,” although these changes did not reach statistical significance.

“These findings suggest that CBD has beneficial effects in patients with schizophrenia,” authors concluded. “As CBD’s effects do not appear to depend on dopamine receptor antagonism, this agent may represent a new class of treatment for the disorder.”

The JAMA story that made big headlines earlier this week also had a few scientific weaknesses. According to CNN, “the authors of the study didn’t account for people who already showed a pre-disposition to psychotic-like experiences.”

It is also important to know that the study was conducted in the United Kingdom, where combining tobacco with cannabis is much more common than in the U.S.

“Most cannabis users smoke cannabis in combination with tobacco,” wrote the study authors. “Therefore, we cannot rule out whether the associations observed between the cannabis use class and psychotic experiences are exacerbated by the combined use of cannabis and cigarettes.”

The Bottom Line

If you have a family history of psychosis, do not consume cannabis (or any medication for that matter) without consulting a doctor. Also, if you are not an adult (or are the parent of a teenager), be aware that recreational cannabis use is strictly an adult activity.

Diet Coke Unveils Four New Flavors And No One Knows Why

In an effort to appeal to a younger demographic and to get in touch with what the cool kids are into, Diet Coke is switching up its looks and releasing a sleeker and cooler-looking can.

A post shared by Diet Coke (@dietcoke) on

The cans look pretty fit right? They’re taller and less bulky, with a more minimal design that’s still easy to recognize as part of the Coca-Cola Company. With the launch of the new cans, the company also released four new flavors: Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango.

Via Popsugar:

“We’re modernizing what has made Diet Coke so special for a new generation. Millennials are now thirstier than ever for adventures and new experiences, and we want to be right by their side.”

It’s weird to read about millennials without the context of them ruining the world.

While this change may seem a little unnecessary, it’s a good idea for Coke to switch things up and try to engage with users who want to have healthier options, especially considering all the competition that exists nowadays with carbonated and low calorie drinks.

But, don’t fret. The original Diet Coke flavor will still be available for purchase.

$225K Worth Of Marijuana Delivered To Frozen Yogurt Shop

This TCBY store located in North Carolina received $225,000 worth of marijuana instead of their expected shipment of frozen yogurt.

Via WSOC:

“You never know what you are going to get for Christmas,” visitor Richard Debetta said.

Indeed.

The marijuana was placed in three different packages, which an employee found and opened. When she realized the packages contained marijuana instead of froyo, she freaked out, and called the police. Authorities discovered that the package was meant to be dropped off at the Parcel Plus next door. The manager of the store confirmed that the marijuana packages were originally headed to a P.O. Box and not to the yogurt shop.

No arrests have been made and the origin of the packages is still unclear. According to WSOC, the intended recipient’s information was turned over to the police. The real question is, what’s gonna happen to all that weed?

It’s Official! Recreational Marijuana Now Legal In Vermont

For the first time in US history, a state has legalized recreational marijuana without a voter ballot initiative. With a stroke of his pen on Monday, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott signed the historic legislation that allows adults to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and the right to grow a limited amount of plants.

House Bill 511 will not create a legal method of obtaining marijuana, but no longer will citizens be arrested for possession. Vermont now joins eight other states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington (and Washington DC) — to declare an end to cannabis prohibition.

The long-awaited signing is yet another slap in the face of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who earlier this month reversed Obama administration guidelines allowing states to implement and regulate their own laws in regard to cannabis without interference from the federal government. “Vermont is standing up to the regressive, harmful policies coming out of Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department,” said Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Other states and policymakers should follow suit, and keep pressing for marijuana reforms that are supported by a vast majority of the public.”

Vermont’s marijuana law will go into effect in July. Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the bill with some reservations. “Today, with mixed emotions, I have signed H. 511,” Scott said. “I personally believe that what adults do behind closed doors and on private property is their choice, so long as it does not negatively impact the health and safety of others, especially children.” Last May, a similar bill passed the legislature, only to have Scott veto it.

Until now, all the other states legalized marijuana via voter initiatives. But Vermont, along with 25 other states, do now give this power directly to the citizens.

It remains to be seen if there will support in Vermont’s legislative bodies to pass a full retail program, allowing for legal sales. But the pressure will be on elected politicians to listen to the will of the people. A poll conducted by VPR Poll, shows that 55 percent of Vermonters support legalization. Only 32 percent are opposed. The VPR Poll shows older Vermonters – those 65 and up – are the only age group where the majority opposes legalization. More than two-thirds of 18- to 44-year-olds favor it.

“The majority of Vermonters, like the majority of the American public, desire to live in a community where responsible adults who choose to consume cannabis are no longer criminalized or stigmatized,” said NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano in a statement. “Governor Scott should be recognized for helping to provide Vermonters with a path forward at a time when many elected officials elsewhere are clinging to the failed policies of the past.”

Nationally, more than 60 percent of Americans support making marijuana legal. Three-quarters of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, believe marijuana should be regulated at the state level.

Vermont certainly won’t be the only state to legalize via the legislative process. Efforts are underway in New York, New Jersey and New Mexico to legalize cannabis through their legislature in 2018.

This 1936 Cat Video Broke The Internet

Viral videos featuring cute cats are nothing new, they’re basically why the Internet is famous. Videos shot in 1936 featuring sleek firefighting cats that manage to slide down hoses are something else entirely, and deserve our recognition and complete attention.

Mickey the Minneapolis Fire Cat is described as a cat who loves to play dominoes and chase fire instead of rats. He seems to be really into fire.

The video is set in Station 10, a fire station located in downtown Minneapolis. According to The Huffington Post, the station functioned from 1936 until 2001 when it closed down.

Cinemacats.com claims that Mickey was a real celebrity back in the day, appearing in syndicated news stories and on the Milwaukee Journal of 1936. He was rediscovered by the Internet, who had many thoughts regarding how cute Mickey was, how ethical the video is, and how awesome his firefighting hat and skills are.

Timely commentary, of course.

While the discourse may never end, we do know one thing: cat videos were famous way before the Internet existed.

4 Everyday Tech Hacks You Need In Your Life Immediately

We’re all addicted to video hacks that try to make life easier, like teaching you how to fold a present in seconds, or telling you how to make your own set of touchscreen gloves for a cheap price. If you have a little bit of arts-and-crafts in you, these solutions can speed things up while also not draining you of your will to live.

The following tech hacks, compiled by Komando, are all useful and fast, because no one wants to do all that hard work for a hack that’s supposed to simplify things.

Old devices can always be found lying around the house gathering dust. You can clean up your old tablet and load up Photosnack, a site that’ll create a slideshow out of your Facebook or Flickr account. You can also make a slideshow with the images that are on the tablet.

Amplify Your Phone’s Speakers

https://giphy.com/gifs/funny-amy-poehler-ad-YU1ju4T8uNfji

This trick is the oldest one in the book, and a lifesaver if you’re with friends and don’t have any speakers. Put your phone in a dry cup or bowl and play the music as loudly as possible. You won’t feel like you’re in a club, but this trick really works.

Test Your Remote Control Batteries

With a phone, you can switch on the camera and aim the remote at the lens. Through your phone’s screen, if there’s any battery, you should see a faint light that flickers when you press a button on the remote. If the remote shows no light, then it means that the batteries have run out. This trick works because cameras are better at recognizing light than the naked eye.

The Fresh Toast Marijuana Legislative Roundup: Jan. 22

Marijuana legalization reform continues to pick up steam from Kentucky to California. Last week, Congress introduced a bill to remove cannabis from the Controlled Substance List. Read all about these developments and more in The Fresh Toast’s Marijuana Legislative Roundup for Jan. 22.

National:

California Rep. Barbara Lee introduced a companion bill to the Marijuana Justice Act that Senator Cory Booker introduced in the Senate last year to legalize marijuana nationwide and make several other changes to federal marijuana policy. The bill, introduced Jan. 17, would remove cannabis from the federal Controlled Substances Act, effectively ending marijuana prohibition at the national level, and make a number of reforms intended to benefit communities disproportionately harmed by the War on Drugs.

If enacted, federal convictions for marijuana use and possession would be expunged, marijuana offenses would no longer be grounds for deportation, and those currently serving time for such offenses would be able to petition the court for resentencing. Federal funds would be used to create incentives for states to legalize recreational cannabis, and funding would be withheld for prison construction and staffing in states with disproportionately high low-income and minority arrest rates for marijuana possession.

The act would also create an investment fund for communities that have been hard hit by the War on Drugs, providing grants for library construction, health education, and a variety of other initiatives. Booker’s bill has seen renewed interest in the wake of Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescindment of the 2013 Cole Memo, which enshrined the Obama Administration’s hands-off policy toward state legalization efforts in exchange for the states abiding by a set of eight public health and safety conditions.

The U.S. Senate on Friday failed to pass a budget deal to fund the federal government as the prior continuing resolution expired, including the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer Amendment that has protected state medical marijuana programs from federal law enforcement since 2014. The fate of the Amendment is not yet clear, with some reports indicating that the measure has encountered opposition at the committee level. This could open up state-legal medical marijuana businesses to Justice Department action under the leadership outspoken marijuana critic Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

California:

On Friday, recreational marijuana sales began in Los Angeles, which overnight became the world’s largest legal cannabis market. On January 12, the city of Los Angeles started issuing licenses to existing medical marijuana dispensaries to operate with limited liability under a preliminary set of regulations rolled out in December until final rules can be put in place this year. As of Friday, the city had issued 55 such permits, which are required before a business can apply for a state recreational marijuana license.

This has led to a concentration of recreational licenses in cities such as Sacramento and Santa Ana, where regulations were put in place early on and permits issued well in advance of the official January 1 start of legal marijuana sales. California has issued 159 permits for recreational cannabis retailers so far.

Nevada:

The Nevada Tax Commission unanimously voted on Jan. 17 to allow recreational dispensaries to conduct residential cannabis deliveries. The measure came as part of a regulatory package that would make permanent most of the emergency rules that have governed the state’s recreational marijuana system since the July 1 start of retail sales.

Under the new regulations, retailers will be permitted to deliver up to one ounce of cannabis or cannabis products to private residences. Currently, only licensed marijuana distributors are permitted to transport marijuana under state law. The rules will now go before the Legislative Commission for approval.

Kentucky:

A member of the Republican leadership in the Kentucky state Senate introduced a bill on Jan. 17 to legalize recreational marijuana in the state. The legislation would allow adults 21 and older to consume marijuana, and also legalize the production and sale of the plant. The bill is unlikely to pass the Senate, where it faces stiff opposition from the Republican majority.

11-Year Old Girl Wins The Right To Use Medical Marijuana At School

Ashley Surin may only be 11 years old, but she is making huge waves in the cannabis world. In a thoughtful and compassionate ruling, a judge ordered that Ashley be able to use her high-CBD medication at her Illinois school to prevent seizures.

Illinois already has medical marijuana laws in place, but it had been banned from schools and other child-centric locations like playgrounds. Though this is clearly not carte blanche for medical marijuana users to start medicating in public, it is a giant step in truly putting the compassionate in compassionate use.

Ashley battled childhood leukemia as a toddler and was given several round of chemotherapy and spinal injections to combat the cancer. Though she thankfully went into remission, one of the injections triggered a seizure disorder, as reported by CNN. Since the age of two Ashley was taking multiple medications to fight off seizures, many of them with harrowing side effects.

Though the prescriptions did help, Ashley’s father Jim said that her health was deteriorating and that Ashley was “not herself.” “It was the most helpless feeling in the world to see her go down and not be able to help,” Jim said of one awful seizure that brought her onto a cement floor where she hit her head so hard that doctors had to drain blood from her brain.

It took doctor after doctor, but the Sorins finally found one who recommended a change in diet and medical cannabis. Ready to try anything, especially something that wasn’t another pill with another set of side effects, they got Ashley her medical marijuana card in December.

Now Ashley wears a patch on her foot, uses a balm on her wrist and occasionally, when needed, a drop of concentrated oil on her tongue. And it has worked miracles. Unfortunately, with the way Illinois law is written, it also meant that Ashley either had to stay home from school or sue the school. So they sued.

While a Federal Judge issued an emergency order allowing Ashley to go back to school, the Illinois attorney general agreed not to prosecute and assured school staff that there would be no legal ramifications for helping Ashley with her medicine.

Out of the 30 states plus the District of Columbia where cannabis is legal medically or recreationally, only three so far allow children with seizure disorders to use their medicine at school: New Jersey, Maine and Colorado. This new court ruling could have a ripple effect for the benefit of sick kids across the US.
