Studies Show Medical Marijuana Can Help Migraines

Migraine affects an estimated more than 10% of people worldwide – medical marijuana can help

In the US In a large US survey, 17.1% of women and 5.6% of men reported having migraine symptoms with most often among people aged 20 to 50 years, and is about 3 times more common in women than in men. In Canada an estimated 8.3% of Canadians have been diagnosed with migraine by a health professional. They have a similar female/male ration and migraine prevalence was highest among people in their 30s and 40s: 17.0% for women and 6.5% for men. These debilitating incidents are soul crushing and costly. Now studies show medical marijuana can help migraines.

A key finding determined that cannabis with THC levels over 10% became the strongest predictor of success in treating the migraine and headache-related pain with cannabis.

In a study published in 2022 in the National Library of Medicine, hope has been discovered.

Medical marijuana has been hypothesized as an alternative therapy for migraines, given the undesirable side effects of current migraine medications.

Medical marijuana significantly reduced nausea and vomiting associated with migraine attacks after 6 months of use. Also, medical marijuana reduced the number of days of migraine after 30 days, and the frequency of migraine headaches per month. Medical marijuana was 51% more effective in reducing migraines than non-cannabis products. Compared to amitriptyline, medical marijuana aborted migraine headaches in some (11.6%) users and reduced migraine frequency. While the use of medical marijuana for migraines was associated with the occurrence of medication overuse headaches, and the adverse events were mostly mild and occurred in 43.75% of patients who used oral cannabinoid preparations.

The research joins another study that looked into the use of prolonged cannabis for individuals that suffer from migraines. Published in 2020 in the journal Brain Sciences, the study found that frequent cannabis use decreased migraine frequency.

“These findings indicate that MC results in long-term reduction of migraine frequency in 60% of treated patients and is associated with less disability and lower anti-migraine medication intake.”

Cannabis and CBD have had rising interest in migraine treatments in the last few years with organizations looking to alternative medicine to offer a needed solution for those who want to stay away from opioids. Additionally, the American Headache Society and the American Migraine Foundation have both expressed the need for more research around cannabis and CBD for migraine relief.

Can Pets Use Medical Marijuana or CBD

My pet is like my child, is it ok to share my medicine with them, but just in smaller doses?

In the history of medicine, men of have been the key factor and up until the 1980s women and kids were just seen as little men in regards to medical dosage. In 1986, National Institute of Health established a policy that encouraged researchers to include women in studies.  We have quickly come a long way, but you need to remember, despite your love and treatment of your pet, they are just not mini-humans.  The medical side of the pet care industry is over $2.6 billion in North American. So can pet use medical marijuana or cbd?

Events like New Year’s Eve and July 4th are packed and very noisy holidays sending pets into stress overtime. The answer is yes to CBD with conditions and generally no to THC.  First, always talk to your vet, and second, always find something that is made for pets.  And here is why.

Medical Marijuana and Pets

it is well know chocolate is toxic to dogs. While rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. Likewise, a small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dogs.

Cats and dogs can become intoxicated by cannabis in various ways, most commonly by accidentally eating edibles (e.g., baked goods, candies, chocolate bars, and chips containing cannabis), or cannabis directly (in any form). Dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. A small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dog

Animals are sensitive to the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis plant. Its dangers are prevalent. “If you ask any of our emergency room veterinarians, they would all say that the number of cannabis-intoxicated dogs has increased by leaps and bounds since legalization of medical and then recreational marijuana for humans,” UC Davis professor of vet sciences, Karl Jandrey, told the Los Angeles Times.

CBD and Pets

It’s only normal to want the best for our pet dogs and cats, and the use of cannabidiol has shown to be more than promising. In fact, CBD could very well be the treatment we’ve all been looking for to extend the lives of our pets, and add life to their years. CBD products are perfectly safe for your furry friend as long as they’re derived from the hemp variety of the cannabis plant. Products derived from the marijuana variety of cannabis, however, are not safe for animal consumption, as they typically contain high levels of THC and can thus be toxic to animals.  And yes, you can give CBD to your dog before the fireworks, if you talk to your vet and give it a few hours before to allow time for the calming effect.

Michigan Now Allows Veterinarians To Discuss CBD Treatment With Pet Owners

A website that doubles as an educational portal was launched by the Veterinary Cannabis Society (VCS) for veterinarians, as well as pet owners and cannabis businesses. This follows years of the exploding popularity of cannabidiol use for pets, as it’s shown promise in helping treat many ailments naturally from cancer and anxiety, to arthritis and old age. But despite this, there are still many questionable claims, uses, and products out there.

Starting in October 2021, Nevada became the first state in the country to pass a law that allows licensed veterinarians to recommend and administer hemp and cannabidiol products. This means that Nevada is the first state to legalize the use of cannabinoids as a veterinary treatment.

Steve Yeager, an assembly member who sponsored the bill, said that it clarified vet rules around the use of CBD. Additionally, they can also talk to pet owners about it and consult with them about its use, dosage, and even administer the medication to pets directly. “They can do all that without having to worry about being disciplined by their board, which was really the main concern behind the bill,” says Yeager. Meanwhile, in Michigan and California, vets are only allowed to consult regarding cannabis use but aren’t allowed to administer them to their pets.

With the widespread use of cannabis in more than 40 states medically, and 22 states recreationally, there still are no guidelines on the appropriate use of CBD for pets even with a flourishing market as entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to develop products made for pets.

We expect the pet cannabis industry to continue booming, with the hopes that more vets and pet owners will have the knowledge and guidance that they need in order to safely and confidently medicate their cats and dogs.  Remember, just like you wouldn’t give your dog a martini or your cat rosé, don’t get them an edible and hope for the best.

Is CBD Medicine?

Some people see CBD as a silver bullet for a variety of things – it helps – but is it medicine?

Amazon has hundreds of CBD products and the CBD companies make claims that it can help on a wide variety of things – but is medicine?  After being discovered in 1940, CBD has been used for a variety of aches and ailments.  While it is proven helpful, is CBD medicine?

Scientists are still learning about how CBD affects the body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  approved Epidiolex, a medicine that contains purified CBD from hemp, to help treat seizure disorders like epilepsy. The FDA has concluded that this drug is safe and effective for this intended use. However, other marketed products and uses of CBD may not be FDA approved.

Since CBD is an approved prescription drug, it can’t be legally included in foods or dietary supplements. CBD can only be included in “cosmetic” products. But there are still CBD products on the market that are labeled as dietary supplements.

The reasoning behind the FDA not expanding or ruling on CBD is they have not found adequate evidence to determine how much CBD can be consumed, and for how long, before causing harm. Therefore, the do not intend to pursue rulemaking allowing the use of CBD in dietary supplements or conventional foods.  So basically more research before they put on the stamp of approval.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when taking CBD is expecting an immediate fix. Often, people take CBD and expect it to work like a drug: noticeably and immediately. But CBD is less like Tylenol and more like a good exercise regimen — it can take a while before you notice a difference.

Using CBD regularly is the key to experiencing its benefits. If you’re using CBD and you’re not sure why you haven’t noticed a difference yet, here are some things to consider.

You Need to Use CBD Consistently

If you’re using CBD (or cannabinoid preparations of any kind), consistency is essential. The majority of successful studies on CBD involve giving the participants a daily dose of CBD, not a once-off dose. Often, these studies span weeks or months.  So you have to decide on your commitment and should ask your nurse or doctor about your plan.

Most experts advise that CBD takes a while to build up in the system. For this reason, you can’t expect immediate results after a single dosage.

How Long Will it Take for CBD to Work?

Anecdotally, some CBD users start noticing a difference after a minimum of five days of regular use. Some people use it for three weeks before they fully feel the benefits of CBD.

Tips for Boosting the Effects of CBD

Some recommend using CBD with a high-fat meal. A 2016 study found that fat helps absorb more CBD, increasing the bioavailability from less than 10% to around 30%. In other words, fat helps your body absorb and use CBD.

For a bonus, add a little black pepper. An animal study found that CBD levels in the bloodstream were six times higher when it was taken with piperine, which is found in black pepper.

It is also import to keep track on when and how often you take it. Whether you write it down on a piece of paper or use your Notes app, try to record your daily dosage of CBD. When you’re new to CBD, this can help you learn what your body needs while you figure out your ideal dosage. Since no two bodies are alike, only you can hear what your body is saying.

As scientists do more research, more will be discovered about what CBD can and can not do, but we do know it has some benefits and it might be able to help you.

New Twist Of The Beer After Work, Mondays Turning Marijuana

Switching to marijuana after work (especially earlier in the week) reduces calories, chills you out and doesn’t effect your work

Mondays are Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays are Mondays in disguise, so people head home, pop a cold one and relax.  But now the trend, as seen in California, is weed is replacing the wind down of choice in the earlier part of the week.  And for a variety of good reasons!  On Monday, people head home after work (or stay home in today’s work-at-home environment) and unwind from returning to the grind.  People tend to weekend, people pop a beer or three or have a glass of wine but know you see people taking a puff off of a vape pen. So the new twist of the ear after work? Monday turning marijuana!

Marijuana doesn’t effect work the next day

Unsurprisingly, marijuana use after work is better in this study. Research on the effects of alcohol on work performance are extensive and, when comparing data, the researchers found that heavy drinking after work negatively affected performance in more ways, including reduced productivity, bad attendance, inappropriate behavior, and poor working relationships with colleagues. They found there did not appear to be excessive negative effects on a person’s coordination the day after taking weed. It turns out that hangovers from alcohol are way worse than the next-day effects of cannabis.

No Hangover

A few hits on the vape pen are much more easy to manage than a few beers.  Once the beer is open – you have to drink it, once you pour a glass of wine, well – you can’t just let it sit there.  But with a most cannabis, you can do a low dose and save the rest for another day. And it turns out that hangovers from alcohol are way worse than the next-day effects of cannabis.

And if you overindulge on a Monday, weed hangovers aren’t quite the same as those brought on by alcohol. And for many, weed hangovers tend to be more tolerable than alcohol-related ones.

Lower calories

Marijuana contains a small number of calories when eaten raw. However, smoking or vaping weed is a zero-calorie consumption method. Edibles have the calories of the chosen vehicle (chocolate, gummy, beverage, etc).

What about the rest of the week?  By Wednesday, people are making plans and tend to go out to parties, restaurants, and bars.  The weekend is full of group activities, often is places were openly using weed is not the norm (weeding, sporting events, live performances, etc). The most popular day to eat out in the U.S. is Saturday. Second is Friday, third is Sunday. Monday is the slowest day for restaurants. Americans eat almost 30% of their meals away from home each year.

Delaware Legalizes Marijuana – Who’s Next?

With the First State legalizing marijuana – we are inching to 50% of the country having full recreational

Starting Sunday, Delaware, the First State, legalizes marijuana. The state, whose motto is Liberty & Independence, will set free marijuana sales as the the 22rd legal state.  They will be able to reap tax benefits, help veterans and other medical marijuana patients and just chill after a busy week.

Marijuana, in the quantity of personal use, becomes legal starting Sunday. Delawareans will not be able to purchase recreational weed in the First State for at least 16 months. It will still be illegal to consume marijuana in public, and employers are still allowed to have a zero-tolerance policy.

In March, their General Assembly passed two marijuana-related bills: House Bill 1 legalizes the “personal use quantity” of marijuana, which varies by cannabis form, for people ages 21 and older. This is defined as 1 ounce or less of leaf marijuana, 12 grams or less of concentrated cannabis, or cannabis products containing 750 milligrams or less of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Delaware Governor Carney, in a statement, said he still believes legalizing weed is “not a step forward. I want to be clear that my views on this issue have not changed. And I understand there are those who share my views who will be disappointed in my decision not to veto this legislation.

“I came to this decision because I believe we’ve spent far too much time focused on this issue, when Delawareans face more serious and pressing concerns every day. It’s time to move on.”

According to the Pew Research Center, an overwhelming share of U.S. adults (88%) say either that marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use by adults (59%) or that it should be legal for medical use only (30%). Just one-in-ten (10%) say marijuana use should not be legal, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted Oct. 10-16, 2022.

So who is next? The Minnesota Senate cast its first vote to legalize recreational marijuana Friday, pushing the proposal closer to becoming law than ever before. The House approved its marijuana bill last Tuesday.

“Minnesotans are ready. Attitudes are changing. Now is our time to undo decades of ineffective and damaging prohibition,” said Sen. Lindsey Port, DFL-Burnsville, who sponsored the marijuana bill and wore a bright green suit to commemorate Friday’s vote.

Governor Tim Walz has pledged to sign the bill into law if lawmakers are thriving, making Minnesota the 23rd state to legalize recreational cannabis fully. One issue that has caused disagreement among Minnesota lawmakers is local control for cities and counties that do not want to accept legal cannabis. The House-approved bill will not permit localities to quit marijuana commerce or revoke operators’ licenses directly.

The Sun Is Out, Reach For Your CBD Sunscreen

Summer is here and the sun is out, which mean our body is going to be much more exposed. Sun is the source of vitamin D, which has a profound impact on our immune system. People have been thriving in the sun for thousands of years, but excess exposure to UV rays from the sun can actually damage the skin. When the sun is out, reach for your CBD sunscreen.

The official forecast calls for much warmer than normal conditions for most of the nation. For many regions, the heat will seem unrelenting, persisting from late June through early September.  This means the need for hats, lots of good fluids and sunscreen.

While sunscreen has been around since Ancient Greece (guess those togas weren’t good at protecting the skin), it has involved into a X industry to help folks from the downside of rays.  Recently , CBD sunscreens have emerged on the market and are providing cool relief for millions.  Aside from being a skin friendly carrier oil, CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties, which keeps skin from becoming inflamed by the sun. Of course CBD is working in conjunction with zinc oxide, and they seem to make a mighty team. Cannabinoid alchemists everywhere seem to be infusing sunscreen with CBD.

Concerned about getting high while baking in the sun with cbd?  Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active ingredient in the cannabis plantaccording to Harvard Health Publishing. It can be derived from either medical marijuana or hemp. Although marijuana contains cbd, it doesn’t have psychoactive effects. (THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical that causes the high.) All that said, CBD won’t lead to any mind-altering effects.

According to a first-ever study, CBD can protect laboratory-grown skin cells from cell death triggered by UVB rays — the component of sunlight that causes sunburns, skin cancer, and premature aging.

These findings indicate that CBD could be a beneficial additive to sunscreens and may offer more protection than sunscreen alone.

The study was led by the biotechnology company Applied Biology Inc.

Target, Amazon, Walmart, JC Penny’s and whole host of other stories carry the sunscreens. Lather up and have a fun summer.

Want To Work in Marijuana, Here Are Some Tips

Some people dream of working in weed – others want to be part of a new industry.  Here are some things you might want to know

Some people dream of working in travel, others in food and some want to work in the growing marijuana industry.  Do you want to get in on “the ground floor”…although that ship is pretty much about to sail unless it is a brand new legal state.  Either way, the cannabis industry employees over 428K and still searching for good talent. Want to work in marijuana, here are some tips.

2023 goals

Coming out of Covid, that marijuana industry has had some ups and downs. California and its job market is down, but Missouri is hiring. Smaller states are experiencing an uptick while some of the legacy ones are struggling. Missouri, Michigan and New Jersey had the strongest job growth. New York, with over 1,500 unlicensed retailers, is also hiring, but it is a bit more risky.

There are four industry divisions – grow, product, retail, and ancillary.  The best current opportunities are in product and retail.

GROW

Grow is having the biggest difficulties as both legal and black market flower is flooding the market and the price per pound has dropped. It is as seen a year over year decrease of about 25% meaning they are streamlining operations.  Think of this as working in a farm or large garden operation.  An in person, hands on role that lets you nurture the plant and then ship it off to be a pre-roll, product or flower.  A smaller part of the industry but employees and owners tend to passionate, especially in developing new strains.

PRODUCT

Products remain healthy as seen on April 20th, the high holy day of cannabis sales.  Sales skyrocketed as more people enter the market and increase how often they consume.  There is an opportunity for brands that have multiple product lines and also have strong distribution.

An independently conducted poll from Jushi uncovered that, despite rising inflationary pressure and cost-saving behaviors, demand for cannabis is resilient.

39% of participants said they purchased less expensive cannabis in 2022 compared to 2021, but 73% actually spent more money per transaction this year. Additionally, THC percentage and price are the new leading factors considered when consumers purchase cannabis. Last year, branding and strain type were most important, but now 60% and 58% of respondents consider THC percent and price the most important factors, respectively.

If you go into product, make sure you understand how much they are making, selling and their growth potential. Maybe do some research and talk to your favorite retailer to see how their brand is selling.

RETAIL

Retail is definitely not a work at home but rather a vibrant chance to interact and learn from customers.  Retailers are often open 7 days a week and have traditional boom times such as July 4th, holiday weekends, winter holidays, etc.  Smart ones also work to minimize slow times. A recent survey from CivicScience found that 21% of people doing Dry January — a popular trend where you abstain from alcohol for the month — are replacing alcohol with cannabis and CBD. The same survey uncovered that the largest demographic of people replacing alcohol with cannabis are aged 21-24 (34%), followed by 25-34-year-olds (24%).  If you go into retail, act professional, know and connect with your customers and look for ways for the company (and you) to increase sales and profits.  Strong salespeople ALWAYS have a good career paths.

Ancillary

Ancillary includes all the “picks and shovels” business such as marketing and packaging firms to point of sale systems.  This area has taken a hit and responded in a unique way.  Cannabis firms have lost business to mainstream firms and cannabis ancillary firms are branching out to more mainstream clients.

If you have talent in ancillary area – be it tech, sales, marketing, insurance, so on, consider looking at large and boutique mainstream agencies/companies and asking them if you can help lead up their marijuana division.

On a last note, marijuana is still an emerging industry with a chance to make a name for yourself with hard work and gumption.

Concentrates

For the more adventurous think wax, shatter, oil or crumble. You’re going to be hearing these terms a lot if you start hitting up the local marijuana store.

Best advice, leave these extracts to those who know what they’re doing. Find a savvy friend to show you the ropes the first few times. And prepare to sit or lay down. There are many other ways to enjoy cannabis without smoking or concentrates.

Please note, synthetic marijuana is NOT an alternative. Please leave that stuff to the amateurs.  This weekend, kick back, chill and have an adventure.

You Might Want Some Cannabis or CBD For Pickle Ball

People of all ages have jumped into Pickle ball – but for some, it is a pathway to short (and maybe) long term sports injuries

Pickleball has become the new hot thing in the summer months!  Nine million Americans head to the court and over a million Canadians grab a racket all to play the sports fad. While it started in the mid-60s, since Covid it is becoming very mainstream.  It is an easy, fast “ish” paced game for all ages that are mobile.  But for some who aren’t usually as nimble and athletic – it can be a bit of challenge. You might want some cannabis or CBD for pickle ball because accidents happen.

The most common injuries include

  • Calf strains and tears
  • Flares of knee arthritis
  • Herniated disks in the lower back
  • Meniscus tears
  • MCL, LCL, hamstring and ankle strains
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles injuries

Because pickleball players swing paddles, the upper extremities — shoulder, wrist, elbow — are also prone to injuries. Those include:

  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow (tendinitis involving the forearm muscles)
  • Wrist tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff tendinitis and tears
  • Labral tears

Many of these are inflammation or topical injuries that can be treated with marijuana or cbd.  For serious injuries like tears or breaks – it can help you with pain before and after you see a physician. Increasingly, professional athletes in sports ranging from football to bicycling to long-distance running have turned to using cannabis to reduce pain from post-game injuries and to help speed recovery.

RELATED: Why You Should Be Using Cannabis, Not Ice, For Injuries

People unfamiliar with marijuana aren’t usually aware that it has so many healing properties, mainly its anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation can result after an injury either on the field or due to conditions like arthritis. Using cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive component of marijuana, may be more effective (and practical) for treating sprains and injuries. In fact, it can take the place of ice completely. CBD is simply more convenient since you can carry topicals for spot treatment as well as oral CBD products for when you have an accident. It also has the added benefit of being free from THC, which is an advantage for athletes.

So if you are picking up the racket and head out, know that marijuana can be helpful if something goes wrong on court.

Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, and recent studies have shown that it can provide relief for a variety of conditions. Here are some of the benefits of cannabis supported by verified studies:

  1. Chronic pain relief: Cannabis has been found to be effective in treating chronic pain in adults. This is because it contains compounds called cannabinoids, which interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to reduce pain and inflammation.
  2. Nausea and vomiting relief: Cannabis has also been found to be effective in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting1. This is because cannabinoids can interact with the body’s serotonin receptors to reduce nausea and vomiting.
  3. Appetite stimulation: Cannabis has been found to be effective in increasing appetite and decreasing weight loss associated with HIV/AIDS. This is because cannabinoids can interact with the body’s cannabinoid receptors to stimulate appetite.

These are just a few of the benefits of cannabis supported by verified studies. However, it is important to note that claims of effectiveness should be critically evaluated and treated with caution. Additionally, cannabis can have side effects and can be addictive, so it is important to use it under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
