Biden Administration Dodges Marijuana Decriminalization Question: Will Joe Legalize It?

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was again asked about the President’s pledge to stop criminalizing people over marijuana at a briefing with reporters on Wednesday.

By Jelena Martinovic

The unofficial marijuana holiday 4/20 once again stirred up discussion among top lawmakers and officials in the U.S. about the drug’s legal status.

While the support for the legalization of marijuana on the federal level comes mainly from the Democrats, President Joe Biden has not yet given an “update” on progress in fulfilling his decriminalization promise from the campaign trail.

Cannabis Banking Reform As Legislative Icebreaker

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), the third-highest-ranking Senate Democrat, once again expressed her support for passing a bipartisan cannabis banking reform bill during a visit to a credit union on Wednesday, reported Marijuana Moment.

During a press event at a branch of the Salal Credit Union, Murray — the assistant Democratic Senate leader — said the broad legislative vehicle might be the “best opportunity” for marijuana banking reform to advance this session.

The senator added the America COMPETES Act “has a really good chance of passing and deals with a lot of really critical issues facing Americans today.”

Perlmutter Urges Senators To Action On The Reform

With congressional leaders appointing key lawmakers to discuss the final form of a large-scale bill dealing with innovation and manufacturing in recent days, there’s hope that it will be the vehicle to protect financial institutions that work with state-legal cannabis businesses.

The U.S. House of Representatives formally attached a marijuana banking reform amendment from Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) to COMPETES Act in February.

On Tuesday, Perlmutter sent a letter to Senate leadership urging the chamber to take action on the reform.

He implored the sponsors of a wide-ranging marijuana legalization bill that’s being finalized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH), to act, given that passing his Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act could also serve as a legislative “icebreaker” for broader reform.

Republicans Want To Save Banks

On the other hand, it seems the senators from across the aisle are more prone to helping banks.

“They (Republicans) want to do the banks’ business,” Senate Banking Committee Chair Brown said. “They want to do their bidding, but that’s not exactly breaking news that Republicans want to help the banks.”

Montana Sen. Steve Daines noted that cannabis reform doesn’t stand a chance with the current Senate if it includes criminal justice components. The SAFE Banking Act remains politically viable, he said.

“We have bipartisan support, of course, for the SAFE Banking Act, and we’ve got enough Republican votes that we can get it passed,” Daines noted. “So, let’s take the step.”

Cannabis Entrepreneurs Divided On Issue

Some cannabis entrepreneurs are not that optimistic.

Leonard Tannenbaum, founder, chairman and CEO of AFC Gamma Inc., does not hold much hope the SAFE Banking Act will pass into law this year.

In an interview with Brady Cobb, founder of Sunburn Cannabis, at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference on Wednesday, Tannenbaum said the much-anticipated SAFE Banking Act does not show many signs of passing this year, even together with the America COMPETES Act.

On the other side, Curaleaf Holdings Executive Chairman Boris Jordan told Jim Kirsch of Alliance Global Partners in a keynote address that kicked off the two-day cannabis conference that the two bills are the first step in a four- or five-step process that hinges on Congressional support.

“The outlook has never been better,” he said. “If we can get any federal piece of legislation that recognizes the existence of the cannabis industry, in my opinion, that’s a home run.”

Biden Still Silent On Cannabis Decriminalization

Either way, Biden is still silent on the decriminalization issue after a full year in the Oval Office.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was again asked about the president’s pledge to stop criminalizing marijuana at a briefing with reporters on Wednesday, Marijuana Moment writes.

While the White House didn’t provide any update on the issue — even though Biden believes that people shouldn’t be incarcerated over marijuana — Psaki instead praised the Drug Enforcement Administration’s decision to expand the number of authorized manufacturers to grow cannabis for research purposes.

“The president continues to believe that no one should be in jail because of drug use,” Psaki said. “I don’t have an update here. We are continuing to work with Congress, but what I can say on marijuana is we’ve made some progress on our promises.”

The press secretary called the move “a key step in promoting research because it broadens the amount and quality of cannabis available for research purposes.”

She added that Biden is “continuing to review his clemency powers, which is something he also talked about on the campaign and certainly remains committed to taking action on.”

In the meantime, lawmakers continue to pressure Biden on cannabis legalization.

Will President Succumb To Pressure?

In December, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) urged the president via Twitter to take unilateral action on cannabis policy.

“Biden needs to lean on his executive authority now. He has been delaying and underutilizing it so far,” AOC tweeted. “There is an enormous amount he can do on climate, student debt, immigration, cannabis, health care and more. Time is running out — we need to move and use alternative paths.”

Now that The House of Representatives approved the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act, H.R. 3617, on April 1, sending it to the Senate, the question arises – will Biden use his presidential veto to nix the cannabis legalization bill if it reaches his desk?

Paul Quirk, a political scientist at the University of British Columbia in Canada, recently said that Biden “would be hard-pressed to veto” legislation that supports cannabis use because he can’t allow losing the younger generation of voters, reported Newsweek.

“Legalization is favored by two-thirds of all Americans, an even higher percentage of Democrats, and the vast majority of younger people,” Quirk said. “The 18-39-year-old age group is exactly where Biden has lost the most support since his inauguration.”

“Vetoing marijuana legalization would make Biden public-official enemy No. 1 to many of the young voters whose support he badly needs to win back,” he added.

Yet Marsha Cohen, a law professor at UC Hastings College of the Law, partially agrees with Quirk, even though she said that the chances are slim that the bill will be approved in the Senate.

“Young people may also be those least likely to be responsive to pollsters right now because they might not care. This [bill] might ‘talk’ to them,” Cohen told Newsweek.

Biden is poised to unveil a new strategy for dealing with drug addiction and overdoses on Thursday, reported Reuters.

The proposed plan seeks to broaden access to medications for opioid overdoses, increase funding for law enforcement and expand sanctions against traffickers.

Americans Want To See Weed Legalized

Nevertheless, a recent poll showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans would like to see marijuana legalized.

In the new survey, conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 1,000 U.S. adult citizens were interviewed online from April 1-5.

Fifty-seven percent would support expunging marijuana-related convictions, while 51% back allowing banks to provide services to marijuana businesses.

The newest data only confirmed the Gallup poll results released late last year, that showed that as many as 68% of U.S. residents support cannabis legalization.

Earth Day And Every Day: 3 Questions To Ask When Sizing Up A Product’s Sustainability

We challenge you to become an advocate for sustainability by questioning brands and urging them to do better, and supporting the brands out there that put in the extra effort for our planet.

The SEC recently proposed a rule requiring public companies to report on ‘climate-related risks,’ prompting consumer product manufacturers to think twice about how they are creating products, where everything is sourced, and what ingredients they are using.

From the endless supply of paper products requiring loads of water for production, to the chemicals flooding the beauty product market, or the single-use plastic bottles forced upon the cannabis industry to meet compliance requirements, the uphill battle of becoming a more sustainable manufacturer spans across sectors.

Only 1% of all consumables remain in use six months after sale. The carbon footprint of companies making consumer goods is under a microscope, not only by federal agencies, but consumers as well who want to live a waste-free lifestyle and support brands that share similar values around sustainability.

There’s certainly a lot to consider when assessing the sustainability of a product. But by asking yourself these three questions, you can get a good starting point for your evaluation.

What kinds of chemicals or synthetics are used to produce the product?

There are widely-held concerns about chemical pollution in the environment. Out of approximately 350,000 compounds registered globally, only a small fraction has been assessed for safety, and this number continues to grow at pace which poses great risk on earth’s systems.

Most paper products require processing chemicals to manufacture the end product, but not all paper products require the same level of chemicals to deliver a finished product. Hemp paper is an industry game-changer in the world of paper product production. Botani, a creator of customizable and scalable hemp paper products for cannabis businesses, creates rolling and blunt wraps that are derived from natural resources and eco-friendly processes. This is both due to the fact that Botani is leveraging hemp, an annual crop, in combination with a unique process of whitening called TCF (Totally Chlorine-Free.) As a part of 400 year old publicly-traded paper milling pioneer SWM, Botani inherits a rich history in natural fiber technology.

Using chemicals to create something that’s edible or smokable like a rolling paper is one thing, but products relying heavily on synthetics continue to flood the wellness market

“Endocrine disrupting chemicals are too prevalent and find themselves in an array of products from plastics, to cleaning products, to cosmetics, to fragrances,” said Veronique Lee, CEO & Founder of CandaScent Labs, a health and wellness aroma brand. “In regards to the elusive ‘fragrance’ ingredient, ingredients are not required to be listed, and little is known as to how the ingredients take the environment into account, let alone your personal health.”

RELATED: States Pushing Cannabis Operations To Be More Earth Friendly

CandaScent Labs is challenging the status quo in this regard throughout their collection of candles and botanical mists. They offer full transparency of ingredients with scents that are 100% botanically derived, free of all synthetics, and powered with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Are the ingredients within the product ethically sourced?

Along with finding resourceful ways to utilize natural or organic ingredients like botanicals, sourcing is an incredibly important piece to the puzzle that can also be the most difficult to navigate. The rise of the organic products market and farm-to-table dining is indicative of the general public’s growing interest in knowing where their food comes from, among other products they use regularly. Tracing back a product to its sources is also a way of separating the reputable and trustworthy products from the fake.

“Trust, but verify” is a phrase used by Advocates for Cannabis (A.F.C), a luxury hemp brand that also encourages the idea of knowing your grower and having an intimate involvement in every part of a product’s journey from soil to oil. A.F.C’s hemp comes from Colorado-grown seeds bred from stable hemp genetics and are organically cultivated.

Mindful sourcing is incredibly important when considering hemp products. Hemp roots run nearly three feet deeper than other crops, and it absorbs nutrients along with all of the harsh chemicals found in overly industrial regions of the United States. Eastern U.S. soils see more heavy metals in the crops and varying levels of soil consistency, making those regions less ideal for cultivating hemp compared to Western U.S. farming states with a history in the hemp supply chain like Oregon, Colorado, or California.

Will New York’s Cannabis Law Create Sweeping Changes For Its Hemp Industry?
Photo by Remedy Pics via Unsplash

For every ton of hemp produced, 1.63 tons of carbon is removed from the atmosphere, which surpasses the amount of carbon sequestration for trees. Hemp as a protein substitute is also an incredibly sustainable alternative for food production.

The meat and dairy industries’ continuously expanding carbon footprint currently accounts for roughly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When it comes to the need for protein, if not from meat, consumers mostly turn to proteins made from soybeans, peas, or whey. Hemp protein has never triumphed in the protein powder market previously, but knowing the sustainable potential of hemp led ECS Brands to develop a water soluble and tasty Hemp Fuel Hemp Protein powder that represents the first organic hemp protein of its kind.

RELATED: NY Senator Files ‘Cannabis Container Bill of Rights’ To Address 150M Tons Of Plastic Waste

The worldwide sprawl of meat and dairy operations intoxicates waterways with animal waste, compelling farmers in places like Brazil to eradicate forests for the sake of soybean agriculture — most of which goes to feed animals. This vicious cycle of meat industries pumping greenhouse gas emissions into the air along with other harsh chemicals is something that hemp as a protein substitute could help diminish.

Similar to how CBD products on the market are often questioned about the crop’s origin, often being compared to snake oil, the essential oil market is also under a microscope. Roughly 80% of essential oils on the market today are adulterated with chemicals or other ingredients to make them cheaper, altering composition and purity. For Véronique Lee of CandaScent Labs, experience working for one of the largest grain merchandising companies in the world made her realize how important ethical sourcing can really be when it comes to looking at the overall sustainability of a product.

“I saw how the desire for efficiency and profitability was transforming how our food was made, sourced, processed and marketed, and it drew out of me a passion for sustainable sourcing,” said Lee. “We truly invest in our supply chain, and in doing so, we support the cultivation of healthy plants, a sustainable future, and our own wellness. We formulate our aromas with organic essential oils and botanicals that are all tested for purity, and we are also continuously educating ourselves as members of the Airmid Institute.”

The Airmid Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the global education, research, and sustainable management of medicinal and aromatic plants. The organization supports projects and education focused on aromatic plant medicine, ethical sourcing, sustainable harvesting, and forest regeneration.

Has the company invested in sustainability initiatives or aligned with non-profits supporting the cause?

Even if sustainability is not at the forefront of what a company offers, there are several ways to get involved and utilize resources to support a green economy.

Brands can easily donate to charitable organizations specializing in sustainability, learn more about the impact they might be causing by educating themselves and taking a Carbon Literacy course, or volunteer to literally ‘clean up’ waste in a local spot that desperately needs attention. With Earth Day and Arbor Day, (April 29), there are plenty of timely reasons to be taking a closer look at ways to show Mother Earth some love.

Fifty-two years ago this month, environmental and peace activists in the United States held the first Earth Day celebration. That kick-off remains the largest single-day protest in human history — 20 million people marked it with marches and events across the country.

This Earth Day, AE Global, a custom packaging design company is joining 4G Recycling, Ocean Recovery Group, Clean Miami Beach, and more than 100 volunteers for an event to clean Miami beaches — an event sponsored by Ocean Recovery Group in partnership with Clean Miami Beach.

April 29 marks the 150th Anniversary of Arbor Day, a day when communities around the globe gather to celebrate and plant trees for a greener tomorrow. When Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska in 1872, more than a million trees planted in a single day, and the tradition is still alive and well.

The Arbor Day Foundation is the largest 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. It has has planted over 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities, and forests throughout the world to ensure a greener and healthier future for everyone.

By being an overall informed consumer, you can make more sustainable choices when shopping for the products you need. Asking companies these three questions we’ve outlined can help provide a better understanding of their sustainability efforts and how they may or may not align with your own personal values. But remember, sustainability is an ever-evolving concept, and companies are always changing their policies and procedures, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest news surrounding your favorite brands.

We challenge you to become an advocate for sustainability by questioning brands and urging them to do better, and supporting the brands out there that put in the extra effort for our planet.

New Jersey: How People Are Celebrating First Day Of Legal Weed Sales

Some local Jersey police departments have cautioned they’re intending to use specially trained drug recognition experts to spot drivers under the influence.

By Maureen Meehan

New Jersey weed enthusiasts started lining up before dawn at dispensaries Thursday across the Garden State as adult-use cannabis sales went into effect.

After the long wait on a bumpy road to marijuana legalization, enthusiasm is running high.

As of Thursday, New Jersey’s recreational cannabis sales for adults 21 and older are up and running. The first cannabis shops, referred to as alternative treatment centers, began functioning at 6 a.m. in parts of the state.

“It’s a huge event. It’s a moment in time in American history where prohibition 2.0 is lifted,” said Ben Kovler, chairman and CEO of Green Thumb Industries, which has two facilities opening Thursday, one in Bloomfield and another in Paterson.

Driving While High Seriously Frowned Upon

While possession of up to 1 ounce will be legal, driving while high is definitely not. Some local Jersey police departments have cautioned they’re intending to use specially trained drug recognition experts to spot drivers under the influence.

Speaking Of Police Officers

Gov. Phil Murphy announced last week that New Jersey cops can consume cannabis without penalty while off the job.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin told police chiefs they “may not take any adverse action against any officers because they do or do not use cannabis off duty,” but they’d best not show up to work stoned.

“There’s no allowing anybody to show up impaired. Fair to say that whether you’re drinking, whether you’ve smoked weed, whatever the reason, anybody who shows up impaired will be dealt with aggressively,” Murphy reiterated in a press conference earlier this week.

First Among Its Neighbors

New Jersey is first among its East Coast neighbors to begin recreational sales. While New York is moving forward with a well-planned, $1-billion market, sales are not expected to start until the end of the year.

Pennsylvania, which has an active medical cannabis market, has passed ordinances to decriminalize marijuana or make it a low law enforcement priority, is not expecting adult-use legalization just yet.

TikTok Dentist Goes Viral After Claiming This Common Condition Is Contagious

A TikTok video went viral after suggesting this common oral affliction is contagious.

TikTok medical advice is rampant. This can be good or bad. While the social media platform lends itself to a lot of misinformation, it’s also wide-reaching, featuring the advice of real doctors that manage to reach an expansive audiences.

A dentist’s recent video went viral, suggesting something that a lot of people weren’t ready to hear. Are cavities really contagious?

The clip, uploaded by Dr. Tasneem Mahmood, says you can get cavities by kissing people. “Thinking about the kiss I gave my husband even though he has cavities,” she captioned the video that shows her shakily sipping from a glass of water. “And that’s on cavities being contagious.”

RELATED: Poor Oral Health Is Linked To This Common & Dangerous Disease

The video has been viewed over a million times, with people commenting their utter disbelief and shock that something like cavities can be easily spread. According to a dentist that spoke with The Guardian, cavities can be spread from kissing, but there must also be other elements present for the cavity to truly bloom in another person’s mouth. While the cavity bacteria can spread from mouth to mouth, the individual’s oral situation is also incredibly important.

“The second absolutely essential thing for tooth decay is frequent ingestion of what we call fermentable carbohydrates. So sucrose, glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup and bread for that matter,” he said.

So while kissing someone with cavities can make it more likely for you to get them yourself, it’s still possible to protect yourself by making some healthy lifestyle decisions. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and keeping tabs on the number of foods like chewy candies, cookies, crackers, pasta and bread (all of which easily get stuck in teeth) that you consume is a good place to start.

It’s always important to know who you’re kissing, but asking about their cavity situation might be taking things a step too far. Also, a lot of diseases and bacteria are spread this way, so it’s likely for you to catch other things aside from cavities.

In short, don’t overthink it. Keep up with your dental hygiene and know that cavities are influenced by a variety of factors, from oral hygiene to each mouth’s individual pH levels.

Switzerland: Authorities Green Light First Legal Cannabis Sale Pilot Project

By Nicolás Jose Rodriguez

On May 15, 2021, an amendment to the Federal Narcotics Act came into force in Switzerland, allowing pilot trials involving the dispensing of cannabis for non-medicinal purposes. These trials are intended to create the basis for future legal regulation and will include 5,000 registered participants, who have proven to the federal government they already have been consuming cannabis.

For the trial, cannabis must be organic, produced in Switzerland, and contain no more than 20% THC. The country’s Federal Office of Public Health explained that the current cannabis prohibitions are almost useless, as “despite this ban, consumption is high, the black market is thriving, and users’ safety is not guaranteed.”

On Tuesday, Swiss authorities gave the green light for a pilot project under which a few hundred people in the city of Basel will be allowed to buy cannabis from pharmacies for recreational purposes, reports the Associated Press.

Almost 400 participants will be able to buy cannabis products at selected pharmacies. They will be questioned regularly on their cannabis consumption habits and their physical and mental health over a period of 2 ½ years.

The Federal Office of Public Health said the idea of the projects is to increase understanding of “alternative regulatory forms,” such as regulated sales at pharmacies that could be a basis for future legislation. Cannabis for the study will be supplied by Pure Production, a Swiss firm that has been granted an exemption to the law for its research.

Top 5 Questions Consumers Ask About Cannabis

With cannabis accessibility on the rise, it’s more important than ever for consumers and patients to have access to objective, evidenced-based information on cannabis use.

Today, almost half of Americans live in states with legal access to adult-use cannabis. Medical marijuana is now legal in 38 states, and adult-use sales are legal in 18 states.

Since I started my career, I have addressed thousands of consumer questions about cannabis, ranging from the most basic to the most absurd. There is no such thing as a silly or stupid question with the growing interest in this as an additional tool to help patients.

It is more important than ever for people to know the facts about cannabis and understand how to consume it safely and effectively. In my experience as a nurse and as CEO of Leaf411, here are the most asked questions.

cannabis facts

Q: What’s the best way to consume cannabis to combat chronic pain?

Chronic pain is challenging and there is no quick or easy fix. The goal with introducing cannabis should be to consume an amount that relieves the pain so you can continue with your daily activities.

In addition, some people want to reduce the amount of opioids they take to limit adverse side effects they may be experiencing. We have seen positive results with patients using a layering approach with their cannabis. This means to target both your internal and external source of pain if possible.

For example if you have back pain, it would be most beneficial to take an oral product around the clock to target internal inflammation that could be causing some of the pain. In between doses, apply a topical product to treat the muscles surrounding the area in pain.

RELATED: CBD Vs. Ibuprofen: Which One Works Better For Managing Pain?

A third layer of relief to consider would be to include something for breakthrough pain. This is typically a product that has a fast onset, within minutes. Sometimes vaporization of flower is a good solution for this purpose.

Q: How can cannabis help with my cancer diagnosis?

There are two ways to look at incorporating cannabis with your cancer diagnosis. You either want to treat the symptoms or try to treat the disease. These are two very different approaches.

Although there is limited data to support the use of cannabis as a first-line treatment in cancer-related symptoms, many patients are consuming it to relieve the anxiety, pain, nausea and insomnia that often come with a cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment.

Overall, there have been multiple studies suggesting that THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, can be effective in the treatment of nausea, pain, appetite loss, insomnia, anxiety and inflammation — all of which can be side effects of chemotherapy. There is no way to know for certain if cannabis will help with your symptoms until you try.

RELATED: Cannabis And Breast Cancer: What A New Study Reveals

If you want to find out the possibilities of treating the actual disease, you absolutely need to be in the care of a cannabis clinician. There is no evidence to support that cannabis can cure or effectively treat cancer. For those who want to pursue cannabis as a treatment, it is important to note that the doses will be much higher than treating your symptoms.

Working with a highly trained cannabis clinician will ensure you are prepared to consume higher doses safely and effectively. Many cancer patients experience significant relief from cannabis use once they identify the best method of consumption and dose that works for them without compromising the effectiveness of the cancer treatment.

Q: How do I know what the right “dose” is for me?

It can be very easy to over consume even if you are an experienced cannabis consumer, so we remind folks right away that you can always take more but you cannot take less once you have over consumed.

RELATED: Cannabis 101: How Long Will You Be This High?

For novice consumers, we always suggest starting by consuming only a quarter of the suggested serving size. If it’s an inhalable product, start with just one short inhalation. Then, we suggest waiting a full two hours before repeating the dose. This may seem like such a long time to wait for your second dose but please remember, everyone’s metabolism responds differently to cannabis so no one should judge their experience on a friend’s experience.

Use the buddy system with someone you can trust who can help if you have any problems. Be sure to hydrate while consuming cannabis and of course, do not consume and drive.

Q: How can cannabis impact my sleep?

Cannabis can be used for those who have trouble falling asleep and those that have trouble staying asleep, or both. If someone has trouble falling asleep but once they’re down they stay asleep, we have seen success with fast-acting products. This may include an inhaled flower via vaporization or one of the many edible, tincture or capsule products that boast a quick onset.

RELATED: Why The Latest Study Saying Cannabis Is Bad For Sleep Is Deeply Flawed

For those that are able to fall asleep quickly but wake up too soon, we have seen success with a long-lasting edible product. This includes gummies, capsules, oils, etc. These type products typically stay in your system for about 6-8 hours. The key to success for sleep is timing. You want to make sure you take your product one hour before your head hits the pillow. You want to make sure you’ve had a nice healthy fat either before or even with taking that product.

Cannabis is a fat soluble molecule so that means it loves fat. It will have a better chance absorbing and hanging around your system if you take it with a healthy fat like peanut butter, yogurt, cheese, avocado, etc.

Q: What should I do if I over consume?

If you find that you have over consumed, one of the most basic and most important things to remember is to stay hydrated. We tell people to stay with a friend, who is preferably sober, where they feel safe and familiar. Get comfortable in bed or on a couch and take a nap or watch a movie or TV show to distract yourself.

It is a myth that taking CBD will counteract the high from THC. When combined with THC, CBD may lessen the effects of the THC, but not after it has already been consumed.

With cannabis accessibility on the rise, it is more important than ever that consumers and patients also gain access to objective, evidenced-based information on cannabis use and health concerns. If you have a cannabis question or concern this 4/20 season, check with a cannabis knowledgeable clinician and/or connect with the nurses at Leaf411 for guidance and resources.

A Beginner’s Guide To Cannabis Topicals

The global topical cannabis market is set to have a compound annual growth rate of 37.2% all the way through 2024.

This article originally appeared on Cannabis.net and has been reposted with permission.

The cannabis topical market is one of the fastest growing segments of the industry. It appeals to many different types of consumers from various demographics because the assortment of products available — from skin oils to lotions, balms, and healing creams — appeal to consumers interested in pain relief and other anti-inflammatory benefits.

Whether for skin care or for relief from physical ailments, cannabis-infused topicals have clearly become a huge market and continues to grow.

The global topical cannabis market is set to have a compound annual growth rate of 37.2% all the way through 2024, growing a bit faster than the traditional industry. An increasingly aging population is part of what drives that growth, as well as more people needing natural therapies to protect from ailments, muscle pain, and skin disease.

Having said that, here’s a beginner’s guide for cannabis topicals.

What Are Cannabis Topicals?

Salves, sprays, oils, lotions, creams, transdermal patches, balms… these are the most common cannabis topicals.

They’re essentially skin care and wellness products that are applied to the skin to serve many different purposes, from cosmetic to first-aid, muscle recovery, and skincare. Some of the conditions they are made to treat include overall skin health, psoriasis, eczema, acne, nerve pain, anti-aging, muscle pain, itch, migraines, burns, dry skin, and more. Lubricant oils can also be used to increase sexual pleasure and reduce pain caused by sex.

These are made by infusing cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or a combination of both. These special phytochemicals in the cannabis plant have therapeutic benefits as well as minor and major cannabinoid compounds that react with receptors that are found on the skin’s surface.

RELATED: CBD Topicals: What Are They And Do They Truly Live Up To The Hype?

They are applied topically, which means on the skin, to provide localized relief on the affected area. When used, research shows that they work well to treat inflammation on the skin or under its surface.

What Are The Types Of Cannabis Topicals?

When shopping around for cannabis topicals, you may notice that there are different categories available, including full-spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolates. Full-spectrum topicals mean that they are formulated with a complete variety of beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids, while broad spectrum topicals have a similar blend of terpenes and cannabinoids, though THC has been removed.

Meanwhile, CBD isolates contain nothing else except pure CBD.

The best way to know what a cannabis topical contains is to read its label so that you can understand its ingredients. Aside from the cannabinoid compounds, these products also contain an array of ingredients that are good for the skin. Some topical manufacturers include a lab report available either on its label or on their website that enable consumers to know specifically about its cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Will Cannabis Topicals Get You High?

No. In fact, many people use cannabis topicals precisely because it won’t get you high. That, plus the advantage of it giving localized pain relief. For example, if you have a muscle sprain in your calve that is causing a lot of pain, you can choose to smoke marijuana to get you high while treating the pain. There is also the option of consuming a CBD product, which may or may not contain trace amounts of THC, for overall pain relief. But topicals are applied directly to the calve for quicker pain relief.

Another example is psoriasis. While smoking cannabis can provide some relief from the symptoms of psoriasis over time, applying a topical directly on it will treat the affected area quicker and more effectively without getting you high.

But when it comes to transdermal patches, some of them can get you high.

How Long Does It Take To Feel The Effects Of Cannabis Topicals?

When patients apply cannabis topicals for localized relief from pain and inflammation, its effects can be felt anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. It’s almost immediate. However, if you are trying to treat skin disease such as psoriasis or eczema, it will require several applications over the course of days or weeks to see an improvement.

There is no standard answer on how long it takes for topicals to be felt, since it also depends on your unique biological makeup, the type of product used, and your previous experience with cannabis and/or topicals.

Will Cannabis Topicals Show Up In A Drug Test?

No. Topical cannabis products work by crossing the skin and muscle barrier but won’t enter the bloodstream. Unless you have been consuming cannabis in other forms recently such as smoking, vaporizing, taking edibles, or THC oils, then using cannabis topicals alone won’t cause you to test positive on a drug test.

Even if you are using topicals with higher levels of THC than normal, this is not enough to cause urine and blood tests to detect THC in drug tests.

The exception to the rule are transdermal patches; the way these products are designed are similar to nicotine patches, where the compounds go further than the skin membrane and into the bloodstream. So if you are using THC transdermal patches, then there is a possibility that you will test positive for THC in a drug test.

CBD or THC Topicals?

Now that you know that topicals come in many different forms, the last decision you may have to make is to consider a CBD or a THC topical.

Both of these cannabis topical products offer an array of therapeutic benefits. For those seeking pain relief, a product containing both CBD and THC as well as THCA are recommended. However, many people find that CBD topicals work best for a broad range of conditions because of the potent anti-inflammatory properties of this cannabinoid.

The best answer for you may require some experimentation with cannabis topicals. After all, they are safe and well-tolerated and there is no need to worry about getting high, except with transdermal patches.

NYC Mayor Shares Plan To Use Public Housing Rooftops To Grow Weed

0

Eric Adams elaborated on his earlier statements regarding the use of federal housing rooftops as greenhouses to cultivate marijuana.

New York Mayor Eric Adams admits his idea to use federal property to grow federally illegal weed may hit a few bumps in the road, but he has an idea. He says that by asking for a “waiver,” the state could bypass federal rulings, avoiding conflict and providing use to this public space.

Adams first shared his “rooftop greenhouse” idea at a conference in Albany this past weekend. “We want to examine the possibilities of having a greenhouse space on (New York City Housing Authority) rooftops to grow cannabis,” he said. “The jobs can come from NYCHA residents. The proceeds and education can go right into employing people right in the area.”

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is responsible for these types of permits and authorizations, said they hadn’t been contacted by Adams’s office. “There isn’t much more to say, marijuana is illegal in public housing,” they said in an email to Gothamist.

On Tuesday, he was asked about the statements he made, making it clear that addressing the federal hurdles was among his priorities. “We have to get over the federal hurdle because, right now, the federal government does not recognize the legalization in the state,” Adams said. “I believe there’s a great opportunity for cannabis to be grown on NYCHA rooftops, with an employment aspect of it and using the medical cannabis aspect of it.”

Still, despite standing behind the idea, he recognizes that there are a lot of steps involved in circumventing cannabis federal laws. “We’re going to sit down with the federal government and federal agencies, [and] see if it’s a possibility to get a waiver [and] how we can get it done,” he said.

Adams believes using these rooftops could provide opportunities for employment and better use of the city’s space.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) receives money from the federal government, something that could be put at risk if marijuana were to be introduced into the equation.

Why The Military Should Have Reduced The Penalties For Getting Caught With Weed

It’s simply unfair that even medical marijuana would be off-limits for army recruits, even if they have MMJ cards that have been issued by doctors for health conditions.

According to the Research and Development Corporation (RAND), military recruits who make it into the army even if they have records of low-level cannabis consumption did not perform worse compared to other soldiers.

This should be good news for recruiters around the country, considering that a majority of new recruits originate from states where cannabis has been legal medicinally.

However, cannabis use is still considered a disqualifying offense for hopeful recruits. Now those who have given it up a long time ago may request for a waiver, which is what recruits can do when they have conditions such as insomnia or diabetes.

Now, there’s a new congressional bill that would make the consequences for cannabis use or possession among military members similar to those if they are caught intoxicated from alcohol while on duty, reports Marijuana Moment. Filed by Rep. Anthony Brown, the Restoring Equity for Offenses Related to Marijuana (REFORM) Act would make changes to the current Uniform Code of Military Justice so that alcohol and marijuana penalties are similar.

According to the bill, the fine for cannabis use wouldn’t be worse than being “drunk on duty.” Currently, if military members were caught for wrongful possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana, they could face “dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for two years.” Meanwhile, if they are caught with over 30 grams, this could exceed confinement to five years maximum.

Why The Military Should Be Allowed To Use Cannabis

Members of the military should be allowed to use cannabis, even off-duty. Just because they do so in their free time should not make them prone to dishonorable discharges.

Going back to RAND Corporation, there is no strong evidence that cannabis legalization in the United States has made an impact on the types of recruits in the army. “Contrary to expectations, waivered recruits and recruits with a documented history of marijuana or behavioral health conditions are not uniformly riskier across all dimensions,” says their almost 200-page report on army waivers. “In some cases, they are historically more likely to perform better.”

Now that legalization is spreading in the United States, more active duty soldiers have become vocal about the current policy. According to American Home Front, army veteran Matthew Kahl had to end his second deployment since suffering a serious face injury as well as spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Because of these, he had to be given some 20 different medications.

He then relocated to Colorado to start trying medical cannabis as an alternative, and he reports that it worked. It helped him get off many of the medications one by one, and eventually he was able to stop taking any of them altogether. Now, he manages an organization that helps veterans access the right to use medical cannabis.

“I know of people who are deployed, and they often come across hash in Afghanistan,” he tells the American Home Front. “They use hash to medicate not just to medicate the horrors, the hardships of war, but to alleviate the boredom,” he says.

Deciding the rules around cannabis use is what the government need to figure out, at least in the beginning. It could be understandable that, given cannabis does have psychoactive THC in it and that it could be worrisome to trust an individual high on it while using a firearm, there should also be allowances off-duty at the very least. Soldiers can also definitely make use of the calming properties of cannabidiol (CBD), which doesn’t get you high; on the field, this can help relieve traumatic stress immediately, and help them sleep better to do the job the next day.

RELATED: The Argument For Allowing Police To Consume Cannabis

This hasn’t stopped members from fighting for what they think is right.

In 2020, the House Armed Services Committee approved a $740.5 billion defense policy bill which had a provision stating it would allow one-time reenlistment waivers for former troops if they admit to cannabis use. The proposal by Rep. Ruben Gallego states that service members who end up separating from the army and want to reenlist in the future can request for a waiver if they admit to cannabis use, though it’s on a case by case basis, reports Military.com.

“Smoking pot just once shouldn’t prevent a patriotic American from fighting for our country,” said Gallego in a release. “We need to finally exercise some common sense when it comes to our marijuana policies, and I’m glad my amendment will lead us in that direction.”

He has been proposing this idea every year since 2018, and it was finally passed that same year. He’s not the only one, and it won’t be the last time people will be lobbying for amendments in military law.

Additionally, it’s simply unfair that even medical marijuana would be off-limits for army recruits, even if they have MMJ cards that have been issued by doctors for health conditions. In contrast, if veterans request for help from the US Veterans Administration, they won’t be denied benefits due to cannabis use. In fact, they are encouraged to talk to their VA providers about marijuana use.

“VA health care providers will record marijuana use in the Veteran’s VA medical record in order to have the information available in treatment planning. As with all clinical information, this is part of the confidential medical record and protected under patient privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations,” according to the VA’s website.

Hopefully, we’ll see more changes to help active duty soldiers maximize the use of cannabis.
