Can You Prevent A Hangover By Eating A Big Meal

When seeking advice on how to cure a hangover, a common trope is how to avoid one in the first place (hey, thanks!) And that often includes the phrases “soak up” and “greasy food”. And that can easily lead to a junk food binge of pizza, omelettes, hamburgers and anything you can get at a drive-thru, really. But can you prevent a hangover by eating a big meal?

According to an emergency medicine physician in New York, there’s some merit behind that theory.

Alexis Halpern, MD says by eating a big meal, you’re basically creating a buffer between your stomach and the alcohol. It may not completely prevent a hangover, but chances are, you’ll feel tons better.

Now, what to eat. Halpern says a good rule is to stick with heavier foods that take longer to break down in your body. Especially ones that are nutrient dense. So instead of that slice of pepperoni pizza, try eating a burrito bowl. Water-rich foods are also a good idea, like cantaloupe, watermelon and other juicy fruits to keep you hydrated. Avocados and bananas are another good choice, because they contain important electrolytes. “If you give your body back the things that it needs and the things that it loses when you drink, you’re going to feel better no matter what,” she says.

Of course, not everyone plans to get drunk. So if you find yourself getting tipsy (or maybe you’re already a little wasted) and pizza is the only thing around, by all means, dive in. Eating while you’re drinking/drunk is better than nothing at all (but no promises you won’t see that pizza again by night’s end).

And last but not least, water. It’s essential when you’re consuming alcohol. Halpern says it’s important — and we’ve all heard this before — to drink more water than alcohol in order to prevent a hangover. Says Halpern, “Try to have a drink, then a glass of water if that’s how you need to think of it. Just make sure you’re aware and keeping up with yourself.”

Now you have some knowledge about can you prevent a hangover by eating a big meal. Have a fun night out!

Dating App Says Caring About This Gets More Dates

0

Agreeing on global warming and other environmental issues is very serious business for OKCupid members.

This dating app says caring about this gets more dates, which is a good thing all around. According to OKCupid’s data, an important determinant for swiping right is agreeing on Global Warming. In an interview with Earther, the dating site reports that there’s been a 240% increase in words that include all sorts of environmental issues, ranging from people like “Greta Thunberg,” to terms like “recycle” and “global warming.”

A surprisingly large percentage of OKCupid users appear to care about the state of the environment. Nearly all of them, 97%, believe climate change is real and 82% of them say that it’s something worth being concerned about.

OKCupid workers found global warming dictated people’s dating habits to such a large degree that they tweeted about it. Of course, it went viral.

“Since your match percentage with someone shows how compatible you two are, if you are a climate change activist and they think climate change is fake news, your match percentage is going to decrease,” said Michael Kaye, OKCupid’s Global communications manager.

OKCupid differentiates itself from Tinder, Bumble and other dating sites because it provides matches for you according to answers on a quiz you take when you sign up. This is the method used to provide you with pairings, which has its pros and cons.

This isn’t the first time where hot topic issues have influenced people’s dating app preferences. Last December, Tinder published a list of the most discussed topics on their app. Their results show that in previous years, Millennials used to talk about traveling. Now that the dating app is made up of a large percentage of Gen Z, the most discussed topics include politics and personal causes.

A few years ago, your politics — one of the biggest determinants on your stance regarding global warming — wouldn’t matter as much for your dating prospects. Nowadays, they’re almost all that matters. While there’s the occasional viral tweet here and there that talks about someone’s personal experience with dating a Trump supporter, these kinds of stories are limited. Most of us choose to date people who we won’t want to murder over dinner.

What Is California Sober

Some buzz terms pop up on the radar frequently, while others have been floating around for a while. But “California Sober” was a new one for us. It is more than just Demi Lovato’s hot song from 2021. Some people call themselves California sober because they use marijuana in place of alcohol and other addictive substances. Others define it as using alcohol and marijuana in moderation while avoiding other drugs.

Cannabis and sobriety have had a fraught relationship that now seems to be changing, and possibly even growing into a new concept altogether. Not everyone’s reasons for sobriety are health related, and not all of them are due to an aversion to intoxication—some people just prefer no intoxicants.

The term popped up in a piece by cannabis author and rave queen Michelle Lhooq about taking a breather from one type of hard partying. Says Lhooq:

“The truth is that I will always love drugs and raving—and a future without either would be spiritually unfulfilling. Being Cali sober allows me to keep my feet in both subcultures, while its parameters make it easier not to cave to temptation. I am able to take from these experiences what I’m looking for—mind-expansion, self-exploration, empathetic connection, sensorial amplification—without the addiction and selfishness, and other types of ugliness that I associate with many non-psychedelic drugs.”

RELATED: The Key To Treating Alcoholism With Medical Marijuana

As natural as it came across in her description, Reddit users couldn’t come to agreement on the term; this seemed more like a beef over the use of the term “sobriety” rather than the idea that someone can abstain from hard drugs and have a word for it.

Sobriety used to mean one thing: a hardline abstention from all substances. But considering it often doesn’t apply to caffeine and nicotine, it’s starting to make sense to some people that cannabis may fall under the umbrella of sobriety, being that it is only a mild intoxicant when taken in moderation.

It’s true that some may develop an addiction to cannabis, but research is also showing that cannabis might help dramatically reduce side effects and aid withdrawal to opioids and other drugs.

RELATED: Proof That Marijuana Is More Than 100 Times Safer Than Alcohol

Regardless of motivation and result, it makes sense that someone would label a mostly sober sitch that involves cannabis after the weediest weed friendly state: California.

No matter what someone is “using”, compassion, non-judgement, and care are the much more important ways to approach addictions of all kinds. Humans are imperfect and lowering the stigma of substance reliance, addiction, or assistance is a huge deal— society needs to shift if we’re going to heal the pains of the more damaging addictions. If cannabis is a ‘softer’ way to come down from something, more power to those who use it in such a way.

Science Explains How Marijuana Inspires Awe

Marijuana regulates two subtle, but important gateways through which we experience life.

Regular cannabis users often report an important side effect of smoking marijuana — everything in your life seems amazing. Pizza becomes heavenly. Nature walks seem like you’re exploring the Garden of Eden. Mediocre Netflix shows elevate to masterful works of art. Now, science explains how marijuana inspires awe.

This is by design — your brain’s design, more specifically. We don’t usually talk about awe as an emotion in public. Negative feelings like anger, sadness, and fear crowd the discourse space instead. But awe is an essential ingredient to the experience of being alive. The emotion derives from a novel sensation or moment in your life. A feeling that you can’t believe you’re lucky enough to witness something you might describe as magical.

Awe occurs because of an almond-shaped ball collection of cell bodies called the amygdala. Previously you may have heard of the amygdala described as the brain’s “fear center.” That vastly oversimplifies it. The amygdala regulates many of your emotions and behaviors, including pleasurable feelings like awe. As explained by Timmen L. Cermak, a psychiatrist who specializes in addiction medicine, one way the amygdala facilitates awe is by organizing incoming stimuli.

“When an unfamiliar stimulus arrives, for example wearing a new ring, the amygdala adds a special ‘zing’ of alertness to the feel of the ring,” Cermak writes. “This draws our attention to the new sensations on our finger. After a while, when the feel of the ring becomes the unchanging norm, the amygdala stops adding the zing. We accommodate, or habituate, to the ring’s feel and it falls into the background of our awareness.”

RELATED: Study Shows How Marijuana Can Motivate You To Exercise

Guess what disrupts that familiar feeling of the same-old, same-old? Your body’s natural endocannabinoid system, which is triggered by an uptake of cannabinoids — or, put simply, by puffing a joint. It lowers the barrier to what your amygdala, which has a dense collection of cannabinoid receptors, considers novel or new. It then instructs your brain to release neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, causing pizza to taste like the best thing you’ve ever tasted.

“We dishabituate to the world and many stimuli rise up out of the background and back into awareness,” Cermak writes of this effect.

But cannabis also produces awe in a more subtle way. A 2015 study published in Emotion analyzed the relationship between inflammation and negative emotions. Researchers noted that poor mental health often leads to poor physical health. One example was that high inflammation correlated with clinical depression. However, researchers discovered the strongest relationship was between inflammation levels and awe.

“Why would awe be such a potent predictor of reduced proinflammatory cytokines?” researchers wrote. “One reason is that proinflammatory cytokines encourage social withdrawal and reduce exploration, which would serve the adaptive purpose of helping an individual recover from injury or sickness.”

“On the other hand, awe is associated with curiosity and a desire to explore, suggesting antithetical behavioral responses to those found during inflammation,” they added. “In this sense, experiences of awe may be part of an integrated response that includes emotional and biological responses that facilitate approach and social exploration.”

Multiple studies have noted marijuana anti-inflammatory abilities. It is within reason that by reducing inflammation, cannabis also opens up users to experiencing awe. Sometimes, you hear marijuana causing users to feel like a kid again. This can be meant jokingly, as in you can’t function well enough to perform adult activities, like laundry or cooking. But it can also highlight those big-eyed wonders we associate with childhood — how new and abundant life seems. Put another way, marijuana helps remind users how full and possible life can be.

Why You Should Never Refreeze Melted Ice Cream

If you’re guilty of leaving your ice cream out to melt, join the club. Especially during summer months, people generally don’t think twice about bringing a tub of ice cream outside, but when that happens, you could be putting your health at risk. Here is why you should never refreeze melted ice cream.

Let’s not forget that ice cream is made of dairy (and sometimes eggs), and when it’s left out to sit in the sun, bacteria can start growing. And if you dig into the (what was once) cool treat, you could get an angry case of cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and other symptoms associated with food poisoning.

Your best bet is to avoid eating melted ice cream all together or making sure you put the ice cream back into the freezer immediately after scooping some for yourself. Or just eat the whole damn pint already.

The Daily Mail has some even worse news when it comes to contaminated summer foods you didn’t think could make you sick.

And it isn’t only processed food and drink that can ruin your weekend. Cantaloupes and watermelons have been linked to Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria outbreaks, as pathogens from the soil can reside in the fruit’s skin.

Washing your fruit under running water is usually sufficient, but bacteria can be introduced to the inside of the melon if the outside is not washed properly, giving them all the nutrients they need and the proper temperature and time to grow.

While it’s usually pretty clear when fruit has turned (rotten smell, mold), Listeria can grow in the fridge with no smell or taste. The Daily Mail says if you’re worried about getting sick from food you thought was safe, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly, monitor the temperature of your food (no melted ice cream!) and ensure you don’t leave food in the warm sun for too long.

To recap when you should never refreeze frozen ice cream – conditions in ice cream are prime for bacteria growth and as a result, the risk of food poisoning is high. Besides that, the dreamy creamy texture you’re craving would simply not be satisfied if you tried to eat refrozen ice cream

Did UFOs Make The FBI Almost Cancel The X-Files

Aliens and UFO’s are all in the news. The government is opening up files and, in theory, releasing information about unidentified anomalous phenomena(UAP). Did UFOs make the FBI almost cancel the X-Files?  Military officials shared they believe the government knows much more about UFOs than it is telling the public.

A House Oversight subcommittee held a hearing on UFOs — officially known as unidentified aerial phenomena or UAPs — and heard mystifying testimony about unexplained object sightings and government possession of “nonhuman” biological matter.

RELATED: Gen Z’rs upending things including weed and voting

Lawmakers on the committee, baffled by some of the testimony, repeatedly noted that UAP sightings are an issue of bipartisan concern and raise national security questions. Separately, some accused the federal government of endeavoring to conceal key UFO-related information from the public, though they did not provide evidence to support those allegations.

Now back to the fictional FBI agents Mulder and Scully. They faced mutants, aliens, and all matter of paranormal scary things on a weekly basis on The X-Files. The show was a huge hit for Fox network, one that’s still ongoing, even though the series had a 14-year break.

While this cult show is considered science fiction, show runner and creator Chris Carter explained that during 1993, when the show was about to air, the FBI was truly concerned over their content, and gave him a very weird and paranoid phone call.

Via The Huffington Post:

“I can tell you this: When I wrote the [1993] pilot, I called the FBI to do some research, and they were nice enough, but didn’t really give me the time of day. Then, all of a sudden, as we got close to airing, the FBI called and said, ‘Who are you and what are you doing?’ And for a second, I thought it was going to be the long arm of the law coming in to shut me down.”

Carter explained that after that phone call he became kind of close to the feds, who were known as the unofficial fans of The “X-Files.” When it comes to his experience with the supernatural, Carter claims that even though he’s never seen a UFO or had an alien visitation, he still wants to believe. Very cute, but are aliens real or not? Just tell us.

Hacks To Ripen Avocados Naturally And Quickly

It’s easy to rush and buy the first avocado you see at your local grocery store. While they’re not considered a rare item by any means, they are particular and require the right amount of knowledge and patience for you to use them properly. Avocados have a small window (like, a couple of days) where they quickly pass from unpalatable, to delicious, to awful…and it’s important to be aware of it before you buy or eat them. Here are hacks to ripen avocados naturally and quickly.

Super Food Profiles believes that instead of buying soft avocados you should buy those that are a little hard, keeping them at home while you wait for them to be just right. You never know how long the soft and perfect looking avocados have been at your grocery store, handled by dozens of people who inadvertently ruin their pulps every time they squeeze them.

There are many ways for speeding up the ripening process of avocados, but the best way is to have some patience. Still, for those occasions when you need to have an avocado ASAP, check out the following ripening methods.

Paper bag

https://giphy.com/gifs/arrested-development-jason-bateman-disappointed-yQbzE3pbJhcSk

The easiest way to jump start the ripening process is by placing your avocado inside a brown paper bag. This method will trap the ethylene gas that the fruit is emitting and accelerate the ripening process. You’ll see some progress after 24 hours.

You can also try placing another fruit inside the bag – the most commonly used ones are an apple or a banana – to accelerate the process even further since they also produce ethylene gas. You’ll still need to have some patience since only circumstantial evidence suggests that putting fruits together will accelerate the ripening process.

Allow them to get some sunlight

https://giphy.com/gifs/commercial-ad-super-bowl-d3mnexemmaCiMn9m

By this same reasoning, a slower yet more natural way of speeding up the ripening process of your avocado is to place it in a fruit bowl next to other fruit, in a spot where it receives some indirect sunlight. If you have several avocados and want to eat them every day of the week, you can stagger them closer or further from the other fruit depending on when you want them to be ready. The closer they are to other fruit the faster they’ll ripen.

What to do if you cut into an avocado and it’s unripe

https://giphy.com/gifs/ufc-episode-1-8BlEH938VAzBkubRTh

If you cut open an avocado and discover that it’s still hard and not ready to eat, add a dash of lemon to it. Afterwards, put both halves of the avocado together with the seed inside and place it in a sealed plastic container with a banana or an apple inside. The next day, you might find a wild animal there, or it might work and your avocado will be ripe. If you want to be safe, it’s best to use the unripe avocado in a recipe that doesn’t demand a lot of texture and flavor from the fruit.

Never use microwave or oven

https://giphy.com/gifs/election2016-gop-rnc-election-2016-l0MYFacIZsZTaYx9K

Some avocado enthusiasts believe that placing an avocado in the oven or in the microwave will speed up the ripening process, but this is not true. You might get burned and end up eating a tasteless lump of green. There’s no magical way of tricking nature, and avocados will be ready on their own time.

Does Harry Styles Smoke Weed?

The former boy bander has experimented with psychedelics. But does he smoke weed?

Harry Styles, former One Direction band member, Vogue model and  Calm App narrator, has managed to pave his own way over the last couple of years. After the band’s split, Styles took the opportunity to make music that was different from his previous work and that made him stand out as a talented singer and performer. But does Harry Styles smoke weed?

Being in a boy band is much like being a Disney star. These people have to keep track of their public behaviors, at least until their contracts are over.

In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Styles discussed a strange encounter that somehow involved weed when some guys tried to rob him. “I cross the street and they cross the street, and I think, ‘For f—’s sake, I’m going to get robbed,’” he said. “The guys are like, ‘Can we talk to you for a minute?’ There’s nobody around and my heart’s pounding. He’s like, ‘Do you smoke weed? Do you want weed?” Styles explained that he told them no and that he managed to run away from them after giving the men his money.

When discussing his experience with One Direction, Styles explained that he didn’t want to be the one who ruined things and misbehave. “When I was in the band, it was like, to me, it felt like it was so much bigger than any of us that I kind of felt like, ‘I’m not going to be the one who f–ks it up,’” he said.

Then, when speaking about making his solo record, he said: “I was with my friends and we were in Malibu … I felt so safe. It was like, ‘I want to take some mushrooms? I’m going to take some — like now is the time to have fun.”

While there’s no direct mention of Styles smoking weed, if he’s tried mushrooms then it’s very likely he’s also tried a joint. We’re marking him down as a yes.

Alcohol Helping The Marijuana Industry!

Have cannabis leaders, working hard on federal legalization, found a powerful ally?  Is alcohol helping marijuana industry?  On March 22, 2023, the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) sent a letter to Congress stating that “[t]he time has come for Congress to legalize and regulate adult-use cannabis at the federal level” and that the inconsistency between federal and state cannabis policy “undermine[s] the rule of law and weakens public health and safety, while leaving states unsupported in their efforts to create safe, regulated markets and eliminate dangerous black-market activity.”   Support for cannabis legalization on Capitol Hill has been lacking from mainstream, non-cannabis organizations. So this move by the WSWA is a welcome step, but it also begs the question: is the WSWA’s support for cannabis legalization too good to be true?

The alcohol lobby may view cannabis as the next big growth engine for its business.  Alcohol consumption has been declining in recent years as U.S. consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious.  Couple that with the cannabis industry’s expected growth, and you can see why alcohol companies may suddenly be so keen on federal cannabis legalization. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of alcohol companies entering the cannabis market through investments and THC-infused beverages. And on August 7, 2023, Canadian-based cannabis company Tilray Brands announced its acquisition of eight beer and beverage brands from Anheuser-Busch.

In a potential sign of things to come, the WSWA notes that “the current federal system for the regulation of alcohol serves as a strong model for the structure that should be enacted for cannabis” and federal legalization should be “accompanied by the creation of a robust regulatory structure that licenses producers, testing facilities, and distributors.”  But should the same conglomerates that control the alcohol industry be permitted to dominate the cannabis beverage industry?

The alcohol industry is known for its high degree of consolidation, with a few large companies dominating the market. So, how would a federal legal cannabis industry modeled after the “federal system for the regulation of alcohol services” work?  At a minimum, a shift towards a regulatory structure that more closely resembles the alcohol industry would change the paradigm for a cannabis industry that has developed in a decentralized manner (out of necessity) over the past several decades. The support of an industry group with influence on Capitol Hill may be a welcome development for a cannabis industry eager for relief from federal laws and regulations that are stifling its growth.  So the cannabis industry may not want to look a gift horse in the mouth.  But operators may also be wary of a trojan horse outside their gates. A Beginner’s Guide To Meditating With Marijuana

You need to be careful not to become so dependent on cannabis as a means of relaxation that you can’t mediate without having consumed cannabis first.

Cannabis can be a great accompaniment for any kind of meditation, as really all that involves is presence. Following are some reflections about how to add cannabis by Tara Rose, host of the Green Goddess podcast, which explores sacred medicine, evolution of consciousness, and philosophy. Here is a beginners guide to meditating with marijuana.

In her estimation, there’s a world of difference between getting stoned and working with cannabis in an intentional way. When we are just getting stoned, we are using the plant without care or intention — perhaps even using it to try and escape ourselves. To use cannabis with intention is the opposite. We choose to bring greater consciousness and awareness through communing with the herb. We allow her to amplify our subconscious mind and suppressed emotions so that we can learn more about ourselves, embrace them and integrate them.

RELATED: Using Marijuana For Better, More Relaxing Meditation Sessions

She suggests starting out by simply giving thanks before using the plant and to use it with care. It’s a good practice to make sure that you’re grounded and have eaten beforehand, because it can be very activating to the crown chakra and overstimulating and ungrounding if used too often (or by someone who isn’t balanced). The idea is to create more harmony in our being instead of causing disharmony. The trope of the spacey forgetful stoner is basically just a super ungrounded individual.

Rose cautions that you need to be careful not to allow yourself to become so dependent on cannabis as a means of relaxation that you cannot mediate without having consumed it first. As cannabis can be so stimulating to the crown and third eye, it is important not to become dependent upon it for spirituality because the plant is a teacher and a way shower but we are meant to integrate these teachings.

For many, the ritual of smoking cannabis can add to the overall experience. Others find that an edible can provide an all over body sensation conductive to meditating. Often a hybrid 1:1 strain can provide that sweet spot were one can be in a state of relaxation but remain alert enough to savor the meditative experience without going to sleep. Continue to experiment with different strains and delivery methods until find the right combination that works for one’s individual meditative experience.
