Weed And The Royal Family?

In a cathedral packed with people. Does anyone what to just chill and savor the moment?

The coronation is upon us and the great crown is to be passed.  As Westminster Abbey is filled with 2,200 guests, one wonders if anyone is discreetly using a vape or an edible to get through the ceremony.  And if they are – what would the Firm think? What about weed and the royal family?

While known for being so conservative an era was named after her, apparently Queen Victoria was a medical marijuana patient. Her personal physician allegedly prescribed the royal a cannabis tincture to relieve cramping caused by menstrual pain (not to mention giving birth to 9 children). Though it was considered a viable medicine throughout history, the U.K. government made it illegal in 1928, a ruling that came into effect 30 years after her death. Supposedly, an Egyptian delegate at an international drug conference persuaded enough of the other members that the plant was a threat to British society, calling it as dangerous as opium.

Between Victoria and the the late Queen Elizabeth, the family was very strait-laced and duty focused.  Even bad boy Edward, the Duke of Windsor, who gave up the throne for a twice divorced woman and lead a life of parties and purposeless wasn’t a fan.  Here is a clip of him talking about his doctor’s take that marijuana is healthier than cigarettes.

Princess Margaret, the late sister of the former Queen was known for a being a bit of wild child.  One can see a portrait of her and her antics in the series, the Crown.  There was a story about the Princess regarding cannabis. Immediately after being busted for possession of marijuana at their home in March 1969, the Beatle’s George Harrison and his wife Pattie attended a party thrown by the posh painter and musician Rory McEwen. As they entered, with Pattie’s youngest sister Paula, they bumped into some royals—Lord Snowdon and Princess Margaret. “You can’t believe what happened,” George exclaimed. “We got busted.” “What a shame,” Princess Margaret replied. George, who was due to appear in court, asked for help: “Can you use your influence?” “Oh, I don’t think so!” the princess replied with obvious alarm.

It was at this moment that Paula decided to light a joint. Entirely oblivious, she took a puff and offered it to the princess, who turned on her heels and disappeared, taking her baffled husband with her.

The next royal to be a fan of cannabis is Crown Prince William’s younger brother, Harry. Prince Harry is known to be a fan of marijuana. He did a brief stint in rehab after he confessed to his father that he smoked marijuana and drank heavily at a pub near then Prince Charles’s Highgrove country estate in western England when he was 16.  In his memoirs, he says he has used it to get past the trauma of growing up.  You wonder if he will be craving a way to chill with all those eyes on him at the ceremony.

King Charles, known to be a champion of veterans has hinted that he approves of medical marijuana as an alternative method of pain relief. Queen Camilla seems more open-minded and accepting.

So, I guess you can say some Royals are amused by it all.

Hiking In A National Park And Plan to Consume Marijuana?

Marijuana is recreationally legal in 23 states – including some of the best hiking areas – but what about National Parks?

Summer time and people are hitting the trails to hike and savor the sun.  Over 57 million folks with head outdoors, with about 55% being male and 45% being female, ready to explore the great outdoors.  Colorado, Washington, Canada, Maine and more all have bucolic views for the activity – and it is legal to consume in the state. But if you are hiking in a national park and plan to consume marijuana?

You don’t have to worry about Canada because it is federally legal, but it the US, it is a bit more murky.  National Parks are on federal land, and marijuana is still federally illegal.  And while they sit in fully legal states, the park rangers are federal employees.

No matter the state where you live, cannabis is still considered a Schedule I drug, meaning that if you’re caught with it in a national park, you’re still breaking the law.  Until the President or the Secretary of the Interior releases a form of the Cole Memo, Park Rangers can make it rough.

“In regards to hiking in National Parks, Biden’s pardon is backward facing. It has no impact on offenses occurring after Biden’s proclamation from October 2022. That means that individuals who have previously been convicted of non-violent offenses for simple marijuana possession qualify for a pardon. The pardon, as the name indicates, is a measure of forgiveness for previous acts but does not impact any acts after the pardon. The pardon did not change federal law, so it remains illegal to consume marijuana in the USA, even in states that have legalized. The risk of prosecution under federal law for simply consuming marijuana in a state where it is legal is low at this point. That risk increases if consumption occurs in a federally owned land, such as a national park. It remains illegal and inadvisable to consume marijuana on federal lands.” Stated marijuana lead attorney Daniel Shortt, from Green Light Law Group.

Andrew Cooper, from Falcon Papparport & Berkman LLP and a leading attorney in the marijuana industry shared “The fact that Biden has suggested that he would pardon any federal prisoners convicted of possession of small amounts of cannabis doesn’t mean that the federal park police will not make the arrest.  It doesn’t even mean that the U.S. Attorney in the district in which the national park is located (who is given deference) won’t prosecute the offense. It just means that if you are arrested and convicted that Biden will/may/might, at some point in time, possibly pardon you … maybe.  Unless you also work in the White House, and then you will definitely be fired.”

So, if you are going to a national park and want to consume, be safe, don’t overdue and be discreet. Also, remember, not everyone enjoys the smell of weed so be considerate of others and smoke in an area that’s secluded and private.

An Easy Way To Use Cannabis & Medical Marijuana

Popular with the wellness and health crowd, using a sublingual is an easy to use cannabis and medical marijuana

Long gone are the days of smoking out of tin cans and vegetables (hopefully). Weed enthusiasts have constantly improved on the methods of consuming cannabis, adding water to their pipes, using decarboxylation (baking cannabis as opposed to burning it) to vaporize or even eat cannabis, extracting cannabinoids from weed to create highly potent oils and concentrates, and much more. While smoking is still the most popular – vaping, edibles, beverages, and more are increasing in popularity.  With all this innovation, one form of cannabis is often overlooked: sublingual products. It an easy way to use cannabis and medical marijuana.

Smoking is the oldest and most common way of consuming cannabis, with the process of grinding, rolling, and lighting the joints being social rituals in the cannabis culture. However, not every cannabis user is comfortable with smoking thereby necessitating the need for other means of consumption. And if you have an esophageal issue, this could be the answer for you.

Sublingual refers to products intended to be applied under the tongue. Some such products include oils, tinctures, tablets, sprays, or rapidly dissolving strips, all intended to sit under the tongue for absorption. But if I’m putting it in my mouth, why not just eat an edible?

Well, the answer lies in how our body absorbs cannabinoids. The purpose of a sublingual is that it sits in your mouth, with the active ingredients (such as THC) passing through the membranes in your mouth and going directly into your bloodstream. This contrasts with typical edibles and oral cannabis products, which must be absorbed by your digestive tract before being processed by your liver. This means that a sublingual can avoid your digestive tract and liver entirely, typically resulting in a much quicker onset. Further, some consumers have difficulty processing cannabis edibles and thus feel little to no effect – a tragedy that can typically be avoided with a sublingual.

Compared to orally-consumed or smoked cannabis, the psychotropic experience gotten from sublingual cannabis lasts for a shorter duration. The high gotten from it usually lasts about an hour or two. With sublingual cannabis, you can enjoy your high for a few hours, and go on with the rest of your day.  This makes it popular with the medical marijuana and wellness communities.

The National Institutes of Health states treating pain with sublingually administered cannabis extracts is preferred by many physicians, as it may be regarded as easier to obtain from the pharmacy, and to consume. Sublingual administration might also have the benefit of a more consistent dosing regimen while avoiding the adverse effects of smoking

A sublingual is also usually easy to dose, via a dropper, tablet, spray, or strip. This means that you can more easily control the desired effects, feel the effects more quickly, have more consistent results and avoid unnecessary calories or damaging your lungs. These benefits have led many medical consumers to try sublingual products, with many such consumers preferring them entirely. With most cannabis consumers using weed primarily for health and wellness, we can’t help but ask the question: are sublingual products the future of cannabis?

From Star Company To South Park To Maybe Closing – MedMen Makes News

The marijuana industry has had a variety of players and has MedMen definitely stood out

MedMen, founded by Adam Bierman, launched and quickly became a darling in the booming cannabis industry. With sharp, handsome executives they wove a tale of growth, honesty and success.  Positioned as the Apple of Weed, they gobbled up retail space in California and editorial space in Esquire, Vice, Vanity Fair and more.

This week, SFGate, a newspaper of choice for the Bay Area, reported they are close to collapsing.  How did it happen?

Founded in 2010 by Adam Berman and Andrew Medlin, they saw a chance to redefine society’s relationship with cannabis. The vision was clear from the onset — to become “the Apple” of marijuana dispensaries. The company’s marketing efforts were successful initially and helped introduce and educate previously wary customers, including older crowds, into the cannabis revolution.

In 2018, MedMen West Hollywood was one of the first cannabis retail stores to open in California after the state’s recreational cannabis laws went into effect.  In the same year it opened a splashy store in NYC on Fifth Ave.  High rent for a state that hadn’t gone legal with the store never realizing its potential. Industry veterans scratched their head at the move.

MedMen went public on the Canadian stock exchange in 2018, raising $110 million at an evaluation of $1.65 billion. The stock was trading at more than $6 a share in 2018, but it’s now worth less than $0.014, with a Canadian Market Cap of $19.5 million.

By 2019, the direction and leadership of the company had not gone over as well as expected.  South Park featured MedMen in 2, not one, episodes.  Medmen and their leadership joined Andrew Tate, the Duke & Duchess of Sussex, Tom Cruise and others in what former FOX news host Megyn Kelly says “When South Park turns on you, there’s no recovering.”

The company made aggressive moves under Bierman’s direction, that didn’t pan out as MedMen hoped. They sought to become the largest marijuana company in the country when it attempted a huge blockbuster merger with cannabis producer Pharmacann. That deal was mutually scrapped by the two companies last October, signaling the current upheaval playing out across the cannabis industry.

The company has over $137 million more in debt than assets with only $15 million of cash on hand, according to a financial disclosure released last week. MedMen said in its disclosure that there was “substantial doubt” as to whether it can pay its bills for the next year.

Decrease The Fatigue

Use marijuana as a midweek energy boost. A recent study shows on average, 91.94% of people experienced decreased fatigue following cannabis consumption. The study involved 1,224 people who recorded 3,922 cannabis flower self-administration sessions in a one month period. Cannabis flowers labeled as Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid didn’t differ in symptom relief. Also, the cannabis consumed through the use of a joint to combust flowers had more significant symptom relief than the use of pipes and vaporizers.

A Better Sleep

Halfway through the work week, school week, or just a stressful week, you might want to know marijuana consumers have another benefit over non-smokers: more deep sleep. Scientist report deep sleep is the most essential of all for feeling rested and staying healthyDuring deep sleep, your body takes the time to repair any damage that occurred during the day. In particular, muscular damage and issues with your immune system.  Wake up refreshed to take on the rest of week!

Make You Calmer and Happier

When you’re stressed, you have less of a particular chemical in your brain. That chemical is anandamide (AEA). AEA is like an anti-anxiety pill that your body produces naturally.  In fact, when your body is stressed or anxious, it actually begins to produce more enzymes that get rid of anandamide in your body. This makes you feel tense, nervous, and downright awful.

Active chemicals in marijuana help by inhibiting the anxiety-inducing enzymes. They also help by acting similarly to natural anti-anxiety compounds in the brain.

Marijuana, it seems, can help the mind and body relax, simply allowing a person to enjoy the moment.

Putting the Hump into Hump Day

Hump day brings on jokes about camels and, well, humping.  Cannabis can help make a midweek romp more fun.  Participants in a study published in the National Library of Medicine found that cannabis helped them relax, heightened their sensitivity to touch, and increased intensity of feelings, thus enhancing their sexual experience, while others found that cannabis interfered by making them sleepy and less focused or had no effect on their sexual experience

Instead, maybe opt for a few puffs of a joint or a vape – something that has rapid effects, but is not so potent that you cannot control your dosage. Keep in mind that although these recent studies have shown cannabis can improve intimacy, other studies have shown the sluggish and negative effects of consuming too much THC.

Bring joy into the middle of the week and make the most of your hump day.

Studies Show Medical Marijuana Can Help Migraines

Migraine affects an estimated more than 10% of people worldwide – medical marijuana can help

In the US In a large US survey, 17.1% of women and 5.6% of men reported having migraine symptoms with most often among people aged 20 to 50 years, and is about 3 times more common in women than in men. In Canada an estimated 8.3% of Canadians have been diagnosed with migraine by a health professional. They have a similar female/male ration and migraine prevalence was highest among people in their 30s and 40s: 17.0% for women and 6.5% for men. These debilitating incidents are soul crushing and costly. Now studies show medical marijuana can help migraines.

A key finding determined that cannabis with THC levels over 10% became the strongest predictor of success in treating the migraine and headache-related pain with cannabis.

In a study published in 2022 in the National Library of Medicine, hope has been discovered.

Medical marijuana has been hypothesized as an alternative therapy for migraines, given the undesirable side effects of current migraine medications.

Medical marijuana significantly reduced nausea and vomiting associated with migraine attacks after 6 months of use. Also, medical marijuana reduced the number of days of migraine after 30 days, and the frequency of migraine headaches per month. Medical marijuana was 51% more effective in reducing migraines than non-cannabis products. Compared to amitriptyline, medical marijuana aborted migraine headaches in some (11.6%) users and reduced migraine frequency. While the use of medical marijuana for migraines was associated with the occurrence of medication overuse headaches, and the adverse events were mostly mild and occurred in 43.75% of patients who used oral cannabinoid preparations.

The research joins another study that looked into the use of prolonged cannabis for individuals that suffer from migraines. Published in 2020 in the journal Brain Sciences, the study found that frequent cannabis use decreased migraine frequency.

“These findings indicate that MC results in long-term reduction of migraine frequency in 60% of treated patients and is associated with less disability and lower anti-migraine medication intake.”

Cannabis and CBD have had rising interest in migraine treatments in the last few years with organizations looking to alternative medicine to offer a needed solution for those who want to stay away from opioids. Additionally, the American Headache Society and the American Migraine Foundation have both expressed the need for more research around cannabis and CBD for migraine relief.

Can Pets Use Medical Marijuana or CBD

My pet is like my child, is it ok to share my medicine with them, but just in smaller doses?

In the history of medicine, men of have been the key factor and up until the 1980s women and kids were just seen as little men in regards to medical dosage. In 1986, National Institute of Health established a policy that encouraged researchers to include women in studies.  We have quickly come a long way, but you need to remember, despite your love and treatment of your pet, they are just not mini-humans.  The medical side of the pet care industry is over $2.6 billion in North American. So can pet use medical marijuana or cbd?

Photo by Anthony de Kroon via Unsplash

Events like New Year’s Eve and July 4th are packed and very noisy holidays sending pets into stress overtime. The answer is yes to CBD with conditions and generally no to THC.  First, always talk to your vet, and second, always find something that is made for pets.  And here is why.

Medical Marijuana and Pets

it is well know chocolate is toxic to dogs. While rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. Likewise, a small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dogs.

Cats and dogs can become intoxicated by cannabis in various ways, most commonly by accidentally eating edibles (e.g., baked goods, candies, chocolate bars, and chips containing cannabis), or cannabis directly (in any form). Dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. A small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dog

Animals are sensitive to the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis plant. Its dangers are prevalent. “If you ask any of our emergency room veterinarians, they would all say that the number of cannabis-intoxicated dogs has increased by leaps and bounds since legalization of medical and then recreational marijuana for humans,” UC Davis professor of vet sciences, Karl Jandrey, told the Los Angeles Times.

CBD and Pets

It’s only normal to want the best for our pet dogs and cats, and the use of cannabidiol has shown to be more than promising. In fact, CBD could very well be the treatment we’ve all been looking for to extend the lives of our pets, and add life to their years. CBD products are perfectly safe for your furry friend as long as they’re derived from the hemp variety of the cannabis plant. Products derived from the marijuana variety of cannabis, however, are not safe for animal consumption, as they typically contain high levels of THC and can thus be toxic to animals.  And yes, you can give CBD to your dog before the fireworks, if you talk to your vet and give it a few hours before to allow time for the calming effect.

A website that doubles as an educational portal was launched by the Veterinary Cannabis Society (VCS) for veterinarians, as well as pet owners and cannabis businesses. This follows years of the exploding popularity of cannabidiol use for pets, as it’s shown promise in helping treat many ailments naturally from cancer and anxiety, to arthritis and old age. But despite this, there are still many questionable claims, uses, and products out there.

Steve Yeager, an assembly member who sponsored the bill, said that it clarified vet rules around the use of CBD. Additionally, they can also talk to pet owners about it and consult with them about its use, dosage, and even administer the medication to pets directly. “They can do all that without having to worry about being disciplined by their board, which was really the main concern behind the bill,” says Yeager. Meanwhile, in Michigan and California, vets are only allowed to consult regarding cannabis use but aren’t allowed to administer them to their pets.

With the widespread use of cannabis in more than 40 states medically, and 22 states recreationally, there still are no guidelines on the appropriate use of CBD for pets even with a flourishing market as entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to develop products made for pets.

We expect the pet cannabis industry to continue booming, with the hopes that more vets and pet owners will have the knowledge and guidance that they need in order to safely and confidently medicate their cats and dogs.  Remember, just like you wouldn’t give your dog a martini or your cat rosé, don’t get them an edible and hope for the best.

Is CBD Medicine?

Some people see CBD as a silver bullet for a variety of things – it helps – but is it medicine?

Amazon has hundreds of CBD products and the CBD companies make claims that it can help on a wide variety of things – but is medicine?  After being discovered in 1940, CBD has been used for a variety of aches and ailments.  While it is proven helpful, is CBD medicine?

Scientists are still learning about how CBD affects the body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  approved Epidiolex, a medicine that contains purified CBD from hemp, to help treat seizure disorders like epilepsy. The FDA has concluded that this drug is safe and effective for this intended use. However, other marketed products and uses of CBD may not be FDA approved.

Since CBD is an approved prescription drug, it can’t be legally included in foods or dietary supplements. CBD can only be included in “cosmetic” products. But there are still CBD products on the market that are labeled as dietary supplements.

The reasoning behind the FDA not expanding or ruling on CBD is they have not found adequate evidence to determine how much CBD can be consumed, and for how long, before causing harm. Therefore, the do not intend to pursue rulemaking allowing the use of CBD in dietary supplements or conventional foods.  So basically more research before they put on the stamp of approval.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when taking CBD is expecting an immediate fix. Often, people take CBD and expect it to work like a drug: noticeably and immediately. But CBD is less like Tylenol and more like a good exercise regimen — it can take a while before you notice a difference.

Using CBD regularly is the key to experiencing its benefits. If you’re using CBD and you’re not sure why you haven’t noticed a difference yet, here are some things to consider.

You Need to Use CBD Consistently

If you’re using CBD (or cannabinoid preparations of any kind), consistency is essential. The majority of successful studies on CBD involve giving the participants a daily dose of CBD, not a once-off dose. Often, these studies span weeks or months.  So you have to decide on your commitment and should ask your nurse or doctor about your plan.

Most experts advise that CBD takes a while to build up in the system. For this reason, you can’t expect immediate results after a single dosage.

How Long Will it Take for CBD to Work?

Anecdotally, some CBD users start noticing a difference after a minimum of five days of regular use. Some people use it for three weeks before they fully feel the benefits of CBD.

Tips for Boosting the Effects of CBD

Some recommend using CBD with a high-fat meal. A 2016 study found that fat helps absorb more CBD, increasing the bioavailability from less than 10% to around 30%. In other words, fat helps your body absorb and use CBD.

For a bonus, add a little black pepper. An animal study found that CBD levels in the bloodstream were six times higher when it was taken with piperine, which is found in black pepper.

It is also import to keep track on when and how often you take it. Whether you write it down on a piece of paper or use your Notes app, try to record your daily dosage of CBD. When you’re new to CBD, this can help you learn what your body needs while you figure out your ideal dosage. Since no two bodies are alike, only you can hear what your body is saying.

New Twist Of The Beer After Work, Mondays Turning Marijuana

Switching to marijuana after work (especially earlier in the week) reduces calories, chills you out and doesn’t effect your work

Mondays are Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays are Mondays in disguise, so people head home, pop a cold one and relax.  But now the trend, as seen in California, is weed is replacing the wind down of choice in the earlier part of the week.  And for a variety of good reasons!  On Monday, people head home after work (or stay home in today’s work-at-home environment) and unwind from returning to the grind.  People tend to weekend, people pop a beer or three or have a glass of wine but know you see people taking a puff off of a vape pen. So the new twist of the ear after work? Monday turning marijuana!

Marijuana doesn’t effect work the next day

Unsurprisingly, marijuana use after work is better in this study. Research on the effects of alcohol on work performance are extensive and, when comparing data, the researchers found that heavy drinking after work negatively affected performance in more ways, including reduced productivity, bad attendance, inappropriate behavior, and poor working relationships with colleagues. They found there did not appear to be excessive negative effects on a person’s coordination the day after taking weed. It turns out that hangovers from alcohol are way worse than the next-day effects of cannabis.

No Hangover

A few hits on the vape pen are much more easy to manage than a few beers.  Once the beer is open – you have to drink it, once you pour a glass of wine, well – you can’t just let it sit there.  But with a most cannabis, you can do a low dose and save the rest for another day. And it turns out that hangovers from alcohol are way worse than the next-day effects of cannabis.

And if you overindulge on a Monday, weed hangovers aren’t quite the same as those brought on by alcohol. And for many, weed hangovers tend to be more tolerable than alcohol-related ones.

Lower calories

Marijuana contains a small number of calories when eaten raw. However, smoking or vaping weed is a zero-calorie consumption method. Edibles have the calories of the chosen vehicle (chocolate, gummy, beverage, etc).

What about the rest of the week?  By Wednesday, people are making plans and tend to go out to parties, restaurants, and bars.  The weekend is full of group activities, often is places were openly using weed is not the norm (weeding, sporting events, live performances, etc). The most popular day to eat out in the U.S. is Saturday. Second is Friday, third is Sunday. Monday is the slowest day for restaurants. Americans eat almost 30% of their meals away from home each year.
