TikTok Dentist Goes Viral After Claiming This Common Condition Is Contagious

0

A TikTok video went viral after suggesting this common oral affliction is contagious.

TikTok medical advice is rampant. This can be good or bad. While the social media platform lends itself to a lot of misinformation, it’s also wide-reaching, featuring the advice of real doctors that manage to reach an expansive audiences.

A dentist’s recent video went viral, suggesting something that a lot of people weren’t ready to hear. Are cavities really contagious?

The clip, uploaded by Dr. Tasneem Mahmood, says you can get cavities by kissing people. “Thinking about the kiss I gave my husband even though he has cavities,” she captioned the video that shows her shakily sipping from a glass of water. “And that’s on cavities being contagious.”

The video has been viewed over a million times, with people commenting their utter disbelief and shock that something like cavities can be easily spread. According to a dentist that spoke with The Guardian, cavities can be spread from kissing, but there must also be other elements present for the cavity to truly bloom in another person’s mouth. While the cavity bacteria can spread from mouth to mouth, the individual’s oral situation is also incredibly important.

“The second absolutely essential thing for tooth decay is frequent ingestion of what we call fermentable carbohydrates. So sucrose, glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup and bread for that matter,” he said.

So while kissing someone with cavities can make it more likely for you to get them yourself, it’s still possible to protect yourself by making some healthy lifestyle decisions. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and keeping tabs on the number of foods like chewy candies, cookies, crackers, pasta and bread (all of which easily get stuck in teeth) that you consume is a good place to start.

It’s always important to know who you’re kissing, but asking about their cavity situation might be taking things a step too far. Also, a lot of diseases and bacteria are spread this way, so it’s likely for you to catch other things aside from cavities.

In short, don’t overthink it. Keep up with your dental hygiene and know that cavities are influenced by a variety of factors, from oral hygiene to each mouth’s individual pH levels.

Switzerland: Authorities Green Light First Legal Cannabis Sale Pilot Project

By Nicolás Jose Rodriguez

On May 15, 2021, an amendment to the Federal Narcotics Act came into force in Switzerland, allowing pilot trials involving the dispensing of cannabis for non-medicinal purposes. These trials are intended to create the basis for future legal regulation and will include 5,000 registered participants, who have proven to the federal government they already have been consuming cannabis.

For the trial, cannabis must be organic, produced in Switzerland, and contain no more than 20% THC. The country’s Federal Office of Public Health explained that the current cannabis prohibitions are almost useless, as “despite this ban, consumption is high, the black market is thriving, and users’ safety is not guaranteed.”

On Tuesday, Swiss authorities gave the green light for a pilot project under which a few hundred people in the city of Basel will be allowed to buy cannabis from pharmacies for recreational purposes, reports the Associated Press.

Almost 400 participants will be able to buy cannabis products at selected pharmacies. They will be questioned regularly on their cannabis consumption habits and their physical and mental health over a period of 2 ½ years.

The Federal Office of Public Health said the idea of the projects is to increase understanding of “alternative regulatory forms,” such as regulated sales at pharmacies that could be a basis for future legislation. Cannabis for the study will be supplied by Pure Production, a Swiss firm that has been granted an exemption to the law for its research.

Top 5 Questions Consumers Ask About Cannabis

With cannabis accessibility on the rise, it’s more important than ever for consumers and patients to have access to objective, evidenced-based information on cannabis use.

Today, almost half of Americans live in states with legal access to adult-use cannabis. Medical marijuana is now legal in 38 states, and adult-use sales are legal in 18 states.

Since I started my career, I have addressed thousands of consumer questions about cannabis, ranging from the most basic to the most absurd. There is no such thing as a silly or stupid question with the growing interest in this as an additional tool to help patients.

It is more important than ever for people to know the facts about cannabis and understand how to consume it safely and effectively. In my experience as a nurse and as CEO of Leaf411, here are the most asked questions.

cannabis facts

Q: What’s the best way to consume cannabis to combat chronic pain?

Chronic pain is challenging and there is no quick or easy fix. The goal with introducing cannabis should be to consume an amount that relieves the pain so you can continue with your daily activities.

In addition, some people want to reduce the amount of opioids they take to limit adverse side effects they may be experiencing. We have seen positive results with patients using a layering approach with their cannabis. This means to target both your internal and external source of pain if possible.

For example if you have back pain, it would be most beneficial to take an oral product around the clock to target internal inflammation that could be causing some of the pain. In between doses, apply a topical product to treat the muscles surrounding the area in pain.

RELATED: CBD Vs. Ibuprofen: Which One Works Better For Managing Pain?

A third layer of relief to consider would be to include something for breakthrough pain. This is typically a product that has a fast onset, within minutes. Sometimes vaporization of flower is a good solution for this purpose.

Q: How can cannabis help with my cancer diagnosis?

There are two ways to look at incorporating cannabis with your cancer diagnosis. You either want to treat the symptoms or try to treat the disease. These are two very different approaches.

Although there is limited data to support the use of cannabis as a first-line treatment in cancer-related symptoms, many patients are consuming it to relieve the anxiety, pain, nausea and insomnia that often come with a cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment.

Overall, there have been multiple studies suggesting that THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, can be effective in the treatment of nausea, pain, appetite loss, insomnia, anxiety and inflammation — all of which can be side effects of chemotherapy. There is no way to know for certain if cannabis will help with your symptoms until you try.

RELATED: Cannabis And Breast Cancer: What A New Study Reveals

If you want to find out the possibilities of treating the actual disease, you absolutely need to be in the care of a cannabis clinician. There is no evidence to support that cannabis can cure or effectively treat cancer. For those who want to pursue cannabis as a treatment, it is important to note that the doses will be much higher than treating your symptoms.

Working with a highly trained cannabis clinician will ensure you are prepared to consume higher doses safely and effectively. Many cancer patients experience significant relief from cannabis use once they identify the best method of consumption and dose that works for them without compromising the effectiveness of the cancer treatment.

Q: How do I know what the right “dose” is for me?

It can be very easy to over consume even if you are an experienced cannabis consumer, so we remind folks right away that you can always take more but you cannot take less once you have over consumed.

RELATED: Cannabis 101: How Long Will You Be This High?

For novice consumers, we always suggest starting by consuming only a quarter of the suggested serving size. If it’s an inhalable product, start with just one short inhalation. Then, we suggest waiting a full two hours before repeating the dose. This may seem like such a long time to wait for your second dose but please remember, everyone’s metabolism responds differently to cannabis so no one should judge their experience on a friend’s experience.

Use the buddy system with someone you can trust who can help if you have any problems. Be sure to hydrate while consuming cannabis and of course, do not consume and drive.

Q: How can cannabis impact my sleep?

Cannabis can be used for those who have trouble falling asleep and those that have trouble staying asleep, or both. If someone has trouble falling asleep but once they’re down they stay asleep, we have seen success with fast-acting products. This may include an inhaled flower via vaporization or one of the many edible, tincture or capsule products that boast a quick onset.

RELATED: Why The Latest Study Saying Cannabis Is Bad For Sleep Is Deeply Flawed

For those that are able to fall asleep quickly but wake up too soon, we have seen success with a long-lasting edible product. This includes gummies, capsules, oils, etc. These type products typically stay in your system for about 6-8 hours. The key to success for sleep is timing. You want to make sure you take your product one hour before your head hits the pillow. You want to make sure you’ve had a nice healthy fat either before or even with taking that product.

Cannabis is a fat soluble molecule so that means it loves fat. It will have a better chance absorbing and hanging around your system if you take it with a healthy fat like peanut butter, yogurt, cheese, avocado, etc.

Q: What should I do if I over consume?

If you find that you have over consumed, one of the most basic and most important things to remember is to stay hydrated. We tell people to stay with a friend, who is preferably sober, where they feel safe and familiar. Get comfortable in bed or on a couch and take a nap or watch a movie or TV show to distract yourself.

It is a myth that taking CBD will counteract the high from THC. When combined with THC, CBD may lessen the effects of the THC, but not after it has already been consumed.

With cannabis accessibility on the rise, it is more important than ever that consumers and patients also gain access to objective, evidenced-based information on cannabis use and health concerns. If you have a cannabis question or concern this 4/20 season, check with a cannabis knowledgeable clinician and/or connect with the nurses at Leaf411 for guidance and resources.

A Beginner’s Guide To Cannabis Topicals

The global topical cannabis market is set to have a compound annual growth rate of 37.2% all the way through 2024.

This article originally appeared on Cannabis.net and has been reposted with permission.

The cannabis topical market is one of the fastest growing segments of the industry. It appeals to many different types of consumers from various demographics because the assortment of products available — from skin oils to lotions, balms, and healing creams — appeal to consumers interested in pain relief and other anti-inflammatory benefits.

Whether for skin care or for relief from physical ailments, cannabis-infused topicals have clearly become a huge market and continues to grow.

The global topical cannabis market is set to have a compound annual growth rate of 37.2% all the way through 2024, growing a bit faster than the traditional industry. An increasingly aging population is part of what drives that growth, as well as more people needing natural therapies to protect from ailments, muscle pain, and skin disease.

Having said that, here’s a beginner’s guide for cannabis topicals.

What Are Cannabis Topicals?

Salves, sprays, oils, lotions, creams, transdermal patches, balms… these are the most common cannabis topicals.

They’re essentially skin care and wellness products that are applied to the skin to serve many different purposes, from cosmetic to first-aid, muscle recovery, and skincare. Some of the conditions they are made to treat include overall skin health, psoriasis, eczema, acne, nerve pain, anti-aging, muscle pain, itch, migraines, burns, dry skin, and more. Lubricant oils can also be used to increase sexual pleasure and reduce pain caused by sex.

These are made by infusing cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or a combination of both. These special phytochemicals in the cannabis plant have therapeutic benefits as well as minor and major cannabinoid compounds that react with receptors that are found on the skin’s surface.

RELATED: CBD Topicals: What Are They And Do They Truly Live Up To The Hype?

They are applied topically, which means on the skin, to provide localized relief on the affected area. When used, research shows that they work well to treat inflammation on the skin or under its surface.

What Are The Types Of Cannabis Topicals?

When shopping around for cannabis topicals, you may notice that there are different categories available, including full-spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolates. Full-spectrum topicals mean that they are formulated with a complete variety of beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids, while broad spectrum topicals have a similar blend of terpenes and cannabinoids, though THC has been removed.

Meanwhile, CBD isolates contain nothing else except pure CBD.

Not All CBD Topicals Are Treated Equal

The best way to know what a cannabis topical contains is to read its label so that you can understand its ingredients. Aside from the cannabinoid compounds, these products also contain an array of ingredients that are good for the skin. Some topical manufacturers include a lab report available either on its label or on their website that enable consumers to know specifically about its cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Will Cannabis Topicals Get You High?

No. In fact, many people use cannabis topicals precisely because it won’t get you high. That, plus the advantage of it giving localized pain relief. For example, if you have a muscle sprain in your calve that is causing a lot of pain, you can choose to smoke marijuana to get you high while treating the pain. There is also the option of consuming a CBD product, which may or may not contain trace amounts of THC, for overall pain relief. But topicals are applied directly to the calve for quicker pain relief.

RELATED: How To Choose Cannabis Topicals That Will Actually Work

Another example is psoriasis. While smoking cannabis can provide some relief from the symptoms of psoriasis over time, applying a topical directly on it will treat the affected area quicker and more effectively without getting you high.

But when it comes to transdermal patches, some of them can get you high.

How Long Does It Take To Feel The Effects Of Cannabis Topicals?

When patients apply cannabis topicals for localized relief from pain and inflammation, its effects can be felt anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. It’s almost immediate. However, if you are trying to treat skin disease such as psoriasis or eczema, it will require several applications over the course of days or weeks to see an improvement.

There is no standard answer on how long it takes for topicals to be felt, since it also depends on your unique biological makeup, the type of product used, and your previous experience with cannabis and/or topicals.

Will Cannabis Topicals Show Up In A Drug Test?

No. Topical cannabis products work by crossing the skin and muscle barrier but won’t enter the bloodstream. Unless you have been consuming cannabis in other forms recently such as smoking, vaporizing, taking edibles, or THC oils, then using cannabis topicals alone won’t cause you to test positive on a drug test.

Even if you are using topicals with higher levels of THC than normal, this is not enough to cause urine and blood tests to detect THC in drug tests.

By 2024 The US CBD Skincare Market Will Be Worth Over $950 Billion

The exception to the rule are transdermal patches; the way these products are designed are similar to nicotine patches, where the compounds go further than the skin membrane and into the bloodstream. So if you are using THC transdermal patches, then there is a possibility that you will test positive for THC in a drug test.

CBD or THC Topicals?

Now that you know that topicals come in many different forms, the last decision you may have to make is to consider a CBD or a THC topical.

Both of these cannabis topical products offer an array of therapeutic benefits. For those seeking pain relief, a product containing both CBD and THC as well as THCA are recommended. However, many people find that CBD topicals work best for a broad range of conditions because of the potent anti-inflammatory properties of this cannabinoid.

The best answer for you may require some experimentation with cannabis topicals. After all, they are safe and well-tolerated and there is no need to worry about getting high, except with transdermal patches.

NYC Mayor Shares Plan To Use Public Housing Rooftops To Grow Weed

0

Eric Adams elaborated on his earlier statements regarding the use of federal housing rooftops as greenhouses to cultivate marijuana.

New York Mayor Eric Adams admits his idea to use federal property to grow federally illegal weed may hit a few bumps in the road, but he has an idea. He says that by asking for a “waiver,” the state could bypass federal rulings, avoiding conflict and providing use to this public space.

Adams first shared his “rooftop greenhouse” idea at a conference in Albany this past weekend. “We want to examine the possibilities of having a greenhouse space on (New York City Housing Authority) rooftops to grow cannabis,” he said. “The jobs can come from NYCHA residents. The proceeds and education can go right into employing people right in the area.”

RELATED: New York Mayor Suggests Public Housing Rooftops To Grow Weed — There’s Just One Big Problem

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is responsible for these types of permits and authorizations, said they hadn’t been contacted by Adams’s office. “There isn’t much more to say, marijuana is illegal in public housing,” they said in an email to Gothamist.

On Tuesday, he was asked about the statements he made, making it clear that addressing the federal hurdles was among his priorities. “We have to get over the federal hurdle because, right now, the federal government does not recognize the legalization in the state,” Adams said. “I believe there’s a great opportunity for cannabis to be grown on NYCHA rooftops, with an employment aspect of it and using the medical cannabis aspect of it.”

Still, despite standing behind the idea, he recognizes that there are a lot of steps involved in circumventing cannabis federal laws. “We’re going to sit down with the federal government and federal agencies, [and] see if it’s a possibility to get a waiver [and] how we can get it done,” he said.

Adams believes using these rooftops could provide opportunities for employment and better use of the city’s space.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) receives money from the federal government, something that could be put at risk if marijuana were to be introduced into the equation.

Why The Military Should Have Reduced The Penalties For Getting Caught With Weed

It’s simply unfair that even medical marijuana would be off-limits for army recruits, even if they have MMJ cards that have been issued by doctors for health conditions.

This article originally appeared on Cannabis.net and has been reposted with permission.

According to the Research and Development Corporation (RAND), military recruits who make it into the army even if they have records of low-level cannabis consumption did not perform worse compared to other soldiers.

This should be good news for recruiters around the country, considering that a majority of new recruits originate from states where cannabis has been legal medicinally.

Veterans Can Use Medical Marijuana, They Just Have To Pay For It

RELATED: Military Veterans Can Use Medical Marijuana Without Losing Eligibility For Care And Services

However, cannabis use is still considered a disqualifying offense for hopeful recruits. Now those who have given it up a long time ago may request for a waiver, which is what recruits can do when they have conditions such as insomnia or diabetes.

Now, there’s a new congressional bill that would make the consequences for cannabis use or possession among military members similar to those if they are caught intoxicated from alcohol while on duty, reports Marijuana Moment. Filed by Rep. Anthony Brown, the Restoring Equity for Offenses Related to Marijuana (REFORM) Act would make changes to the current Uniform Code of Military Justice so that alcohol and marijuana penalties are similar.

According to the bill, the fine for cannabis use wouldn’t be worse than being “drunk on duty.” Currently, if military members were caught for wrongful possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana, they could face “dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for two years.” Meanwhile, if they are caught with over 30 grams, this could exceed confinement to five years maximum.

Why The Military Should Be Allowed To Use Cannabis

Members of the military should be allowed to use cannabis, even off-duty. Just because they do so in their free time should not make them prone to dishonorable discharges.

Going back to RAND Corporation, there is no strong evidence that cannabis legalization in the United States has made an impact on the types of recruits in the army. “Contrary to expectations, waivered recruits and recruits with a documented history of marijuana or behavioral health conditions are not uniformly riskier across all dimensions,” says their almost 200-page report on army waivers. “In some cases, they are historically more likely to perform better.”

RELATED: How Cannabis Has Been Used In Times Of War

Now that legalization is spreading in the United States, more active duty soldiers have become vocal about the current policy. According to American Home Front, army veteran Matthew Kahl had to end his second deployment since suffering a serious face injury as well as spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Because of these, he had to be given some 20 different medications.

He then relocated to Colorado to start trying medical cannabis as an alternative, and he reports that it worked. It helped him get off many of the medications one by one, and eventually he was able to stop taking any of them altogether. Now, he manages an organization that helps veterans access the right to use medical cannabis.

“I know of people who are deployed, and they often come across hash in Afghanistan,” he tells the American Home Front. “They use hash to medicate not just to medicate the horrors, the hardships of war, but to alleviate the boredom,” he says.

Deciding the rules around cannabis use is what the government need to figure out, at least in the beginning. It could be understandable that, given cannabis does have psychoactive THC in it and that it could be worrisome to trust an individual high on it while using a firearm, there should also be allowances off-duty at the very least. Soldiers can also definitely make use of the calming properties of cannabidiol (CBD), which doesn’t get you high; on the field, this can help relieve traumatic stress immediately, and help them sleep better to do the job the next day.

RELATED: The Argument For Allowing Police To Consume Cannabis

This hasn’t stopped members from fighting for what they think is right.

In 2020, the House Armed Services Committee approved a $740.5 billion defense policy bill which had a provision stating it would allow one-time reenlistment waivers for former troops if they admit to cannabis use. The proposal by Rep. Ruben Gallego states that service members who end up separating from the army and want to reenlist in the future can request for a waiver if they admit to cannabis use, though it’s on a case by case basis, reports Military.com.

“Smoking pot just once shouldn’t prevent a patriotic American from fighting for our country,” said Gallego in a release. “We need to finally exercise some common sense when it comes to our marijuana policies, and I’m glad my amendment will lead us in that direction.”

He has been proposing this idea every year since 2018, and it was finally passed that same year. He’s not the only one, and it won’t be the last time people will be lobbying for amendments in military law.

veterans PTSD

Additionally, it’s simply unfair that even medical marijuana would be off-limits for army recruits, even if they have MMJ cards that have been issued by doctors for health conditions. In contrast, if veterans request for help from the US Veterans Administration, they won’t be denied benefits due to cannabis use. In fact, they are encouraged to talk to their VA providers about marijuana use.

“VA health care providers will record marijuana use in the Veteran’s VA medical record in order to have the information available in treatment planning. As with all clinical information, this is part of the confidential medical record and protected under patient privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations,” according to the VA’s website.

Hopefully, we’ll see more changes to help active duty soldiers maximize the use of cannabis.

Old Dogs, New Tricks: Is Your Canine In Need Of Cannabis?

0

Although owners are always discouraged from using cannabis products formulated for humans on their pets, there is a growing variety of hemp derived products that may help relieve joint pain.

You see them in the dog parks and on walks around the neighborhood — those slower moving old dogs still doing their best to be the best companion they can be, striving to keep up the pace they once had. Try as they might, age and disease take a toll.

A whopping 70 million dogs experience some form of osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic form of joint inflammation that is the result of cartilage deterioration. It is a painful condition experienced by dogs, especially those in their senior years. Similar to humans , pain and swelling, stiffness, and aching joints are common symptoms.

Also similar to humans, there is no known cure. The therapeutic goal is usually to simply reduce the impact of symptoms, to make walking, getting up and down and even sleeping a bit more comfortable. Typically veterinarians and pet owners employ a variety of medicines such as NSAIDs, steroids and opioids to reduce their joint pain. The problem is each of these commonly used approaches comes with their own risks, including increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and weakening of bones.

Fortunately, the active compounds in the cannabis plant are also showing promise when it comes to treating the pain associated with certain types of canine arthritis. Amendments to the 2018 Federal Farm Bill stated that hemp containing less than 0.3% THC can be legally grown, sold, and possessed in every state in the U.S. That number is not only important for the legality of the products but is also at a threshold so low that it ensures pets will not become intoxicated.

A 2020 study by Baylor College of Medicine, published in the journal Pain, examined the use of CBD for canine OA. It showed both a significant decrease in pain and an increase in mobility for the affected animals.

This comes as no surprise for veterinarians like Dr. Tim Shu, who have been using whole plant CBD dominant products formulated for pets for years. I recently interviewed Dr. Shu for my YouTube series, Saturday Sesh, where he reminded us that, “..cannabis was a part of the veterinary pharmacopeia just like how it was for humans. Prior to the 1900s cannabis was recognized as medicine not just for humans but also for animals as well. There’s also texts from ancient civilizations that go into the use of cannabis as medicine for not just humans but also for animals.”

Although owners are always discouraged from using cannabis products formulated for humans on their pets, there is a growing variety of hemp derived products that may help do the trick. Dr. Shu reminds us that for those pet parents seeking to include cannabis based medicines for their animal’s health, it is important to not only consult a veterinarian, but to also seek out products that are formulated specifically for pets and have been laboratory tested.
