Iowa is the center of a snow story and national political attention – but where are they on weed?

The Hawkeye State is in middle of a major winter storm, while not unusual, this storm is highly significant and shutting down part of the state, except one. It is the Iowa caucus with GOP candidates needing to proven they can finish the race to be nominated as the party’s choice as their candidate. Since 1972, the midwestern state of Iowa has been the first to hold its caucus, which has routinely acted as a litmus test for how candidates will fare later along the campaign trail. So with all this policy and political buzz, what about Iowa and Marijuana.

With a population of roughly 3.2 million they are the 36th state based on voters and people. But, every four years, they have an outsided presence thanks to the primary. Iowa is widely recognized for its agricultural sector, particularly corn, soybean, pork and egg production. As a result, the state is known for its food processing and commodity industries. Nestled in the middle part of the country, they represent rural life. Outside the state capital of Des Moines, Iowa State University in Ames has a well known computer science program attracting students from around the world.

But what about Iowa and marijuana?

The current governor, Kim Reyonlds is not a fan and has been a roadblock. Reynolds has stated “I believe marijuana is a gateway drug that leads to other illegal drug use and has a negative effect on our society.”

Cannabis in Iowa is illegal for recreational use but hemp products including CBD products are legal for consumers to possess and registered retailers to sell. Possession of even small amounts of marijuana is still a crime. The state’s medical marijuana program for patients with qualifying debilitating health conditions allows for the legal sale and possession of no more than 4.5g of THC per patient every 90-day period.

According to a 2021 Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, 54% of Iowans support legalizing recreational marijuana. But with firm resistance from the Governor, it will be hard ot have progress. Despite public acceptance, the Governor believe she knows what is better for the population.

In the meantime, Missouri and Illinois will benefit from consumers and taxes.

To be honest, drinking alcohol to warm up is an old myth. The truth is, if you’re outside in the cold for a long period of time and you’re not careful, a few draughts of alcohol isn’t too wise.The feeling of warmth is an illusion. Alcohol, on its own, doesn’t warm you up. What it does is cause your blood vessels to dilate, sending more blood than normal to your skin, giving you the feeling of warmth while actually making you lose heat much faster. So if you indulge, don’t do it out in the freezing temperatures.

Firewhisky is an alcoholic drink consumed by wizards and witches in the Harry Potter universe. While the underage were not allowed to purchase it, it was occasionally consumed.. It was known to cause a burning sensation when drunk, and for filling one’s body with courage. The lore is it was crafted after Fireball liquor.

Bloodwine is a popular alcoholic drink among Klingons, best served warm. As with many Klingon foods and beverages, it was not for the faint of heart. Bloodwine is a very known to be highly intoxicating, making it a bit of a hit to non-Klingons. Klingon captains and generals were fond of carrying several barrels of their favorite vintages to celebrate victories. Bloodwine is traditionally consumed by warriors being inducted into the Order of the Bat’leth. Bloodwine was used in a symbolic gesture following the Invasion of Cardassia in 2375.

Ingredients

1 oz whiskey
1/2 oz cinnamon schnapps
Splash of 151 rum

Create

1.) Add 1 ounce of whiskey, 1/2 an ounce of Cinnamon Schnapps and some ice to a beverage shaker

2.) Shake to chill

3.) Pour into a highball glass

4.) Splash some 151 on the top

5.) With your wand or a lighter, light your Firewhiskey

6.) Drink, preferably after putting out the flames

Klingon Bloodwine

This concoction will light a fire in your soul and help you envision going to a bold new place. Live long and prosper!

Ingredients

1 oz gold tequila
1 oz spiced rum
dash of grenadine
2 dashes of tabasco
Cranberry juice to top it off

CREATE

In a shaker, add dashes of tabasco and grenadine.
Add the rum and tequila, then top off the drink with cranberry juice until full.
Add ice, shake twice, serve in a red wine glass or martini glass

Brain cancer has been in the news – it is a devastating diagnosis, but there is hope cannabis could help.

Over 100,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumor annually. Brain and other CNS tumors are the fifth most common cancer. Over 30,000 children are currently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Over 1 million people are living with a diagnosis of a primary brain tumor and it can be a rough road. Early research suggest medical marijuana may help with brain cancer.

It is proven cannabis has medical benefits, but more research needs to be done to better define how it can have an impact and help patients. Currently, the evidence that cannabis-based products can treat brain tumours or brain cancer is limited. Preliminary studies from the lab suggest that cannabinoid chemicals THC and CBD can stop glioblastoma (GBM) cells from growing, causing them to die and disrupting the blood supply to the tumour cells.

There has been some data and research around glioma which looks promising. Glioma is a growth of cells that starts in the brain or spinal cord. The cells in a glioma look similar to healthy brain cells called glial cells. Glial cells surround nerve cells and help them function. As a glioma grows it forms a tumor.

Preliminary studies from the lab suggest that cannabinoid chemicals THC and CBD can stop glioblastoma (GBM) cells from growing, causing them to die and disrupting the blood supply to the tumour cells.

In 2021, an early-stage trial led by Professor Susan Short suggested that adding a specific blend of these chemicals – in the form of a drug called Sativex – to chemotherapy could potentially help treat recurrent GBMs more effectively.

CXannabis-based drug Sativex approved as a prescription medicine. The drug, used in treating multiple sclerosis, was also found to be tolerable in combination with chemotherapy, with the potential to extend survival, in a phase I trial in glioblastomas.

A phase II trial, led by the University of Leeds, is assessing whether adding Sativex – an oral spray containing cannabinoids THC and CBD – to chemotherapy, could extend life for thousands diagnosed with a recurrent glioblastoma. Currently, it has an average survival of less than 10 months.

Scientific research indicates medical cannabis and cannabinoids could become key therapy in modern neuro-oncology; however, further studies are needed to establish outcomes and dosage.

Rescheduling is important to states and the marijuana industry…and people are looking for clues

States with legal marijuana want the tax revenue. Cannabis businesses need relief and help to continue and grow. The marijuana industry needs to move to the next level of legitimate industry. And consumers and patients need reliable, safe products which are the same from store to dispensary. This is the role of the federal government, but for the first two years, the Biden industry dithered. But the wheels have started turning and now they are more marijuana rescheduling hints.

The biggest hint is the breaking news came today during a short email sent from HHS. “Good afternoon and thank you for your patience,” a Department of Justice attorney said in an email on Thursday. “The agency has advised that it will release the letter and its enclosures in their entirety.”

The letter and its enclosures mean The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has agreed to release documents related to its recommendation to federally reschedule marijuana in its entirety. This seems to be do to potential litigation over a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request regarding the findings. The release adds pressure if the DEA plans to break precedent by not following HHS’s recommendation.

SAFER Banking advocate Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer shared HHS has recommended marijuana be moved from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance.

According to the DEA, Schedule I drugs have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse. The National Institute of Health disagrees on their website. And with rescheduling, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would become involved, while it is more of an onerous process, it would establish guidelines to make it more acceptable to major mainstream retailers and, more importantly, the medical community.

Additionally, rescheduling the drug would reduce or potentially eliminate criminal penalties for possession. Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD.

The industry agrees with Schumer who made a clear appeal when he shared the “DEA should now follow through on this important step to greatly reduce the harm caused by draconian marijuana laws.”
