Confused About How Much THC And CBD Is In Your Weed

0

Turns out, even daily marijuana users have no idea what an effective dose of marijuana looks like.

When you hit up a marijuana dispensary for the first time, you’ll likely be overwhelmed. Like, overloaded to the point where making a purchase seems nearly impossible. You might resort to buying cannabis flower or a pre-rolled joint, but then the budtender will ask for a cannabis strain preference — “Are you more of a Blue Dream or Grandaddy Purp kind of gal?” “What percentage of THC you like, buddy?”

And, oh look, the runaway train of staggering options just rolled off the tracks. You purchase the first suggestion the budtender makes and you consume responsibly while having no clue how high this flower will make you. Confused about how much THC and CBD is in your weed?

The marijuana plant is incredibly complex. More than 100 cannabinoids (the chemical properties in marijuana that bind to your receptors) exist in the plant and we only talk about, like, two of them: CBD and THC. Dispensaries list CBD and THC percentages for products so you can better understand effective doses and how you should expect to feel after consuming. It can also be helpful to address specific medical ailments, as some conditions are better served through CBD-dominant marijuana flower and vice versa.

Don’t feel bad if you still feel confused. As it turns out, even the most frequent marijuana users and advocates have no idea what any of this means.

A new study published in Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy polled 500 attendees at the cannabis event Hash Bash in Michigan, where local Ann Arbor residents and University of Michigan students gather to smoke weed in protest. Recreational cannabis is legal now in Michigan, but the event spans close to 50 years and has hardcore counterculture roots from the 70s. When researchers asked these attendees questions about cannabinoid content and effective dosing, they found wildly inaccurate responses.

“Even the people who are most enthusiastic have very poor knowledge of cannabinoid content. They greatly overestimated how much THC and how much CBD was in various strains, and what the effective dosages were,” lead author Daniel Kruger said in a statement.

The majority of participants said they used marijuana daily, with 85% saying they do so for health or medical purposes. These attendees mostly relied on their own experiences to gain knowledge about marijuana with only 23% learning from a medical dispensary or caregiver. And it shows.

When asked what the proper amount of CBD and THC was considered an effective dose, the majority said they didn’t know. Those that did respond gave average estimates of 91 milligrams and 177 milligrams for CBD, which is way off.

One person even said 1 million mg of THC was effective. That’s a kilogram of THC, enough to fill an entire football stadium and get everyone in it high.

“The average estimate for an effective dose of THC would actually be fatal in humans,” Kruger said.

Researchers also asked what they considered were percentages for high-THC and low-THC strains, then did the same for CBD. The majority (58%) stated that a low-THC strain was anything with 20% THC or higher. For those unaware, that’s relatively high THC strain. A significant minority (22%) thought anything 40% THC or higher was a low-THC strain. That, by the way, is higher than anything available on the market.

This survey demonstrates the necessity for widespread cannabis education, whether people are frequent marijuana users or just beginners.

“We really have to educate people. This has very real consequences, because these compounds have differential effects,” Kruger said. “Most Americans now live in a state where cannabis is legal, at least for medical purposes, but the information channels aren’t there regarding safe and effective cannabis use.”

Why The CBD Oil You Just Bought Might Be Bogus

Because cannabidiol (CBD) is not bound by any government regulations, cannabis companies have a license to do whatever they want with these products.

It seems everywhere we turn these days there is a big, flashing sign that reads “CBD Sold Here.” But instead of seeing these circus-style advertisements around legitimate medical facilities dedicated to creating a healthier population, they are appearing in front of smoke shops, convenience stores and malls.

America has gone buck wild for this non-intoxicating cannabis-hemp derivative. So much, in fact, they have failed to take into consideration that some of these products might be fake.

Not all CBD is the therapeutic heal-all you’ve been reading about for the past few years. Some of it is junk, containing only trace amounts of the cannabinoid. Reports abound of counterfeit CBD oil sold in parts of the country. So, yes, if you purchased CBD oil the last time you filled up your vehicle with gasoline or bought a black light poster from Spencer’s Gifts, there’s a good chance the CBD you’ve been taking is just a load of bull.

It hurts doesn’t it, getting ripped off? Well, we will do our best to ensure you don’t make the same mistake twice.

Here’s the thing: Because cannabidiol (CBD) is not bound by any government regulations, cannabis companies have a license to do whatever they want with these products. While there are some legitimate operations out there creating the best possible hemp-derived CBD oils, gummies and vapes, others are fly-by-night snake oil salesmen, cutting corners in the quest for the almighty dollar.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that around 40% of CBD products purchased online do not contain as much of the compound as printed on the labels. About 26% included higher concentrations than they were supposed to. Some of these products even tested positive for enough THC to cause a person to fail a drug test. Reports of CBD users testing positive for marijuana have become more prevalent as of late because of these kinds of manufacturing discrepancies.

But it’s not like you haven’t been warned that some CBD products might be a little shady.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has spent nearly five years urging consumers to “beware purchasing and using any such products.” But apparently, all anyone wants to hear in their search for a miracle cure is the hype. Nevertheless, in laboratory tests, the agency found many of these products do “not contain the levels of CBD they claimed to contain.” This means a lot of consumers who have bought into the CBD craze are out there getting scammed. And if they are purchasing CBD to help with a specific medical condition, the swindle becomes more than just about the money.

So, where should you make your next CBD purchase?

Getting your hands on quality CBD products is relatively simple. It’s always a good idea to buy from a reputable dealer in a legal marijuana state where these products are held to testing standards. But if a legal state isn’t an option, consumers shouldn’t just rely on Amazon or their local truck stop for help. You just can’t be sure about the quality when buying CBD from these retailers.

Ultimately, consumers should do some research and find cannabis companies that employ strict testing standards as though they were under the thumb of the FDA. Sniffing out those firms can sometimes be tricky. But this list from the U.S. Hemp Authority is an excellent place to start.

Tiger King and Marijuana Are Linked In More Ways Than One

Tiger King’s Joe Exotic ran for Oklahoma governor and had some interesting ideas about marijuana legalization.

The hit Netflix docuseries Tiger King has taken over both pop culture and our collective subconscious in recent weeks. Escaping into a surreal world bearing little recognition to the world’s current climate soothes our overloaded, overworked brain cells amid the coronavirus pandemic.

If you’ve watched the show, you know marijuana plays a role in Joe Exotic’s bizarre and unbelievable tale. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t seen the show.)

The story touches on Joe’s failed presidential and Oklahoma gubernatorial campaigns. When he ran for Oklahoma governor in 2018, a main plank of Joe’s platform was legalizing marijuana. A promotional item for his campaign was rolling papers.

“Through my years, I’ve tried some drugs,” Exotic said during his first campaign video. “During one of our debates in Norman there, I asked one of my opponents, ‘Have you ever smoked weed before.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, but I’d be ashamed to say it.’

“First of all, how can you represent 300 million people and be ashamed of anything?” he continued. “How can you understand what they hell they’re going through, what their problems are? I ain’t got nothing to be ashamed of. Hell, I’ve done it all. I’ve had some of the kinkiest sex imaginable, and I’ve been to dirty bookstores.”

Just from reading that quote alone you understand why people can’t get enough of Tiger King. And now the cannabis industry is jumping on the opportunity to give the people what they want. And they’re doing it for a good cause.

As Benzinga first reported, California-based marijuana brand Moxie will launch two cannabis strains called Tiger’s Blood and Cool Cats Cush. Moxie will donate $1 to Tiger Protection Fund for every item sold. The products will be available early next week and coincides with Netflix releasing an addition Tiger King episode to satiate fans who can’t get enough.

“The series shed light on the terrible living conditions and deplorable exploitation of tigers in captivity,” Moxie’s head of marketing, Tessa Adams, told VegNews. “We felt compelled to pair with the World Wildlife Fund for this project because our mission is to give back in whatever meaningful ways we can. We hope that people don’t forget about the animals, as they became our primary focus as the season went on.”

The Best CBD Products To Get Delivered While In Lockdown

CBD might help alleviate some of the symptoms you’ve been experiencing in self-quarantine.

Social distancing guidelines have been extended nationwide until April 30 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. While we’ve been living under these restricted conditions for about a month now, our new normal still takes some getting used to. It’s a good time to pick up a CBD habit.

Spending time in isolation with constant reminders of the dangers posed to your health is a hard mental state to be in. CBD might be able to help you cope. While these products won’t produce changes overnight, the consistent use of them might provide relief for whatever condition you’re struggling with, whether you’re looking for some peace of mind, muscle pain relief or some good skincare.

Here are the best options to get delivered to your door:

Tinctures & oils

CBD tinctures and oils are some of the most malleable options for people who are looking to get stress and anxiety relief. These products can help you find some calm or target specific ailments. They’re very customizable, allowing you to add them to your favorite drinks or to take them as droplets. Products like Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil, CBDistillery’s Full Spectrum Tincture and Veritas Farms Full Spectrum Tincture are good places to start, featuring different price ranges and plenty of positive reviews.

Edibles

Edibles are a fun way of introducing CBD to your lifestyle. There are different types that can satisfy cravings such as gummies or chocolates, and they’re also easy to consume, since usually a single piece is a full dose. CBD edibles tend to serve the same purpose as CBD oil, perhaps delivering results in a slower manner, since the edibles have to be digested and broken down  in the stomach in order for you to absorb the compound. Punch-C90, Lord Jones Gummies and Veritas Farm Gummies are good starting places for anyone who’s curious about CBD treats.

Skincare and CBD are a great pairing, with several industry veterans choosing to get involved with the compound due to the results it delivers. There’s a wide variety of CBD skincare and beauty products available in large stores such as CVS, Sephora and even Barneys. Their catalogue is constantly changing, but a quick look through their websites will show plenty of options for those who want to try something new.

COVID Emergency Relief: What Hospitals And Clinics May Not Know

While the COVID emergency bill is still in flux, one thing is certain: It’s changing healthcare for decades to come.

In late March, a $2 trillion emergency relief bill was signed by the President to elevate businesses that are being economically-impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Legislation also provided $80 million to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to invest towards developing vaccines and medical products in the fight against Coronavirus.

In understanding the impact of the funding and how it can help medical practitioners, here are three things HCP’s and organizations must know:

Big changes are coming to over-the-counter (OTC) medications

The President signed the Over-the-Counter Monograph Safety, Innovation, and Reform Act (also known as H.R.3443) into law. Both modernizing the process and way FDA regulates OTC medications and innovating new medications by shortening the pathway to approval, this important act is slated to improve standards of safety and allow better access to OTC medicines for Americans.

RELATED: Can Hospitals And Clinics Draw From COVID-19 Relief Fund?

The bill has three important elements:

  • Speed up the approval process for OTC drugs, creating an 18-month exclusivity period that incentivizes companies to innovate more quickly
  • Updates important language that hasn’t been touched in health care bills since 1970
  • Proposed user fees the FDA would receive from facility registrations in a 2-tier fee structure for OTC monograph order requests ($500k for Tier 1 and $100k for Tier 2)

The bill mandates new leave policies

For hospitals and clinics, the bill may have an impact on H.R. best practices as it mandates employer-paid leave for workers affected by coronavirus — especially those on the front lines. Employers in the private sector are eligible for tax credits as well.

The CARES Act clarifies the paid emergency leave and FMLA-based longer-term family and medical leave sections from the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. It directs the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that certain categories of Federal employees can be exempt from both the emergency paid leave provision (80 hours paid leave) and FMLA-based paid family and medical leave for parents of children whose schools have been closed.

RELATED: Breaking Down COVID’s Newest Rules For Admins And Billing Specialists

The Act also clarifies that workers cannot access paid emergency leave unless they have been employed for 30 days. Furthermore, it limits paid leave for workers who were laid off before March 1 from accessing the emergency paid leave benefit.

Vaccines and testing are at the forefront

Not only does the bill provide for fully-covered testing for individuals with health insurance, the insurer must pay one of two ways: either the rate specified in the contract between provider and insurer or the cash price posted by the laboratory.

Additionally, once a vaccine is green-lit with an A or B rating, those with private insurance are allowed any preventative service for vaccine to be covered at no cost.

While the COVID emergency bill is still in flux, with new items being added, along with funding, one thing is certain: It’s changing healthcare for decades to come.

Will Bernie Sanders Push Joe Biden Toward Dramatic Marijuana Reform?

Sanders and Biden plan on working together on key policy task forces. Could that include marijuana reform?

Former vice president Joe Biden is the presumed Democrat presidential nominee, as Sen. Bernie Sanders announced he was ending his presidential campaign last week. This week Sanders formally endorsed Biden for President in a video livestream, where the two septuagenarians said they would work together on forming policy task forces around key issues like the economy and criminal justice in the upcoming election.

“It’s no great secret out there, Joe, that you and I have our differences,” Sanders said. “We’re not going to paper them over, that’s real, but I hope that these task forces will come together, utilizing the best minds and people in your campaign and in my campaign to work out real solutions.”

The move has largely been recognized as a rallying cry in a Democratic party that’s appeared divided throughout primary season. But a coalition of young voters wrote in a letter last Wednesday that a “return to normalcy,” as promised by Biden, would not earn their support. If Biden is to bridge the generational divide, the group implored him “to champion the bold ideas that have galvanized our generation and given us hope in the political process.”

Marijuana legalization was included among those “bold ideas.”

“End the War on Drugs and support the equitable legalization of marijuana based on proposals laid out by Senator Booker, Senator Warren, Senator Sanders, Secretary Castro, and others,” the group’s letter reads.

Over the past four years, Sanders has slowly pushed the Democratic party to the left in policy issues, such as universal health care, raises in the minimum wage, and overhauling the criminal justice system by ending the War on Drugs. When he was still vying for the candidacy, Sanders announced he would legalize marijuana his first day in office through executive order. Many of Sanders’ opponents, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, also spoke of intentions to legalize marijuana as President.

RELATED: Why Intelligent Cannabis Reform Is Good Politics For 2020

Joe Biden remained a man apart from his party, often stating conflicting views on possible marijuana reform plans. His official platform position is to decriminalize marijuana nationwide and automatically expunge all past cannabis convictions. Within this election cycle, he’s also labeled cannabis “a gateway drug” and accidentally stated intentions to legalize, not decriminalize marijuana.

Around 66% of Americans support legalizing marijuana, according to a Gallup poll released last year. Though Biden was a drug warrior in the past, he’ll have to recognize the shifting tides of the voting public to bridge the cracks within the Democratic party. Young voters have already told Biden a simple solution to making their voices feel included in his campaign this fall — ending the War on Drugs through cannabis legalization. A majority of Americans would support the decision.

5 Reasons Cannabis Was Named An Essential Business

Cannabis is considered as essential as food, water, and all other medicine. Here’s why.

2020 is the year that changed the way people socialize. This is also the year that cannabis legalization swept the ballots. With 34 states having legalized cannabis in some form, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic, we are seeing a shift in cannabis support for the better.

Not long ago, cannabis was considered “the devil’s lettuce”. Today, cannabis has been deemed an essential business, just like the grocery store. Cannabis is considered as essential as food, toilet paper, and soap. Dispensaries and other cannabis businesses in multiple states are considered vital members of the community, like the pharmacy.

During this time of pandemic response, state and city governments around the country have deemed medicinal marijuana companies “essential businesses.” This means that they can remain open for business. Many have changed the way they operate — online and phone ordering, delivery, curbside — but nonetheless, they are open.

So, why did some local governments deem cannabis essential?

A number of cannabis advocacy groups drafted a medical cannabis open letter in support of keeping cannabis businesses open during the pandemic:

  •         Marijuana Policy Project
  •         Veterans Cannabis Project
  •         Veterans for Natural Rights
  •         Clergy for a New Drug Policy
  •         Epilepsy Foundation
  •         Doctors for Cannabis Regulation
  •         Law Enforcement Action Partnership
  •         Students for Sensible Drug Policy

RELATED: Here’s A Breakdown Of Who Supports Cannabis As ‘Essential’ During Pandemic

5 reasons cannabis is essential for patients:

1. Cannabis is a crucial part of the treatment regimens of hundreds of thousands of individuals.

2. Many who have vulnerable immune systems because of their advanced age or a serious medical condition consume medicinal cannabis.

3. Some patients use cannabis to quell chemotherapy-induced nausea and appetite loss.

4. Patients administer cannabis to alleviate agonizing pain or PTSD.

5. The uncertainty created by the crisis is compounded by the prospect of losing access to a treatment option that is essential to patient’s wellbeing.

Later, a second letter was drafted asking that access extend beyond medical cannabis to businesses that sell to the adult-use space (recreational).

So, it seems that cannabis is in fact an essential plant for multiple reasons — all related to health. Cannabis is considered as essential as food, water, and all other medicine. Medical cannabis dispensaries in multiple states have remained open. Recreational cannabis businesses, not so much. In Oregon, all cannabis is deemed essential, but in Massachusetts, only medical cannabis businesses are considered essential.

How Long Do Edibles Last

Edibles should be treated like any other food. Follow your common sense and use your nose to sniff out any foul odors when in doubt.

Edibles have grown increasingly popular over the years, with people making their recipes at home and with cannabis companies producing hundreds of different flavors and styles. Now that people are trying to take better care of their lungs they might be foregoing other methods of consuming cannabis, especially during the pandemic, in order to stock up on edibles. Whether you’re making them yourself or purchasing them in bulk, it’s important to know how long these items can last.

The shelf life of edibles varies depending on what’s in them and how they were prepared. An edible made at home will presumably have a shorter lifespan than a preservative-heavy product made by a company to ensure it can last for longer periods of time (think Twinkie vs. homemade pound cake).

RELATED: Why You Need To Be Careful Using Edibles The First Time

When purchasing edibles online or in a store, be sure to check their expiration dates. If you’re buying in bulk, use your freezer and fridge, which will increase the shelf life as with any other food. Edibles in the freezer, for instance, should last for up to 6 months, just like most other foods.

When it comes to making your own edibles and stocking up on them ahead of time, consider what you’re making and treat it as if there was no cannabis involved. There’s no reason why the presence of the plant should impact the shelf life of your product. There’s mixed data on THC potency. Some scientific studies claim that it tends to degrade slowly over time, while anecdotal evidence touts the powerful highs of old edibles.

2 Chainz Pushes Back Against Claims Marijuana Use Raises COVID-19 Risk

2 Chainz was making a tongue-in-cheek joke, but the health concerns around smoking and vaping marijuana remain.

Last week, public health officials and experts announced smoking or vaping marijuana carried higher risk of contracting the novel coronavirus. Using cannabis in this way also caused more severe symptoms in patients and urged quitting. The report coincided with news marijuana use had reached an all-time high in March, as 33% Americans reported using cannabis at some point in their lives.

“What happens to your airways when you smoke cannabis is that it causes some degree of inflammation, very similar to bronchitis, very similar to the type of inflammation that cigarette smoking can cause,” Dr. Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association, told CNN. “Now you have some airway inflammation and you get an infection on top of it. So, yes, your chance of getting more complications is there.”

Rapper 2 Chainz pushed back against these reports Sunday, though he didn’t refute the public health warnings. On social media, he questioned the framing of media reports targeting marijuana as the primary health concern.

“What about cigarettes , cigars , heroin , crack , meth ?? Or only reefa ? ?Asking for a friend,” 2 Chainz wrote on both Twitter and Instagram, alongside a picture of him smoking what is presumably a blunt.

Though the rapper posted this mostly tongue-in-cheek, it also represents a straw man argument. Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey issued an advisory last week encouraging residents to quit smoking and vaping any products, including tobacco and marijuana. An initial study investigating underlying causes to the spread of the coronavirus in China pinpointed cigarette smoking as a significant risk factor.

NORML, or the National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws, also released a guide to responsible consumer safety tips during the coronavirus pandemic. They cautioned users against smoking at this time, and suggested edibles and tinctures as safer delivery methods at this time, stating:

“Because COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, you may wish to limit your exposure to combustive smoke. Use of edibles or tinctures can eliminate exposure to potential lung irritants entirely.”
