Elon Musk Is Smuggling Marijuana Onto The International Space Station

SpaceX will carry hemp cultures into outer space, so scientists can better understand the effects of microgravity on the plant.

Sending a car into air space wasn’t enough for tech billionaire Elon Musk. Now Musk will boldly take something into space that hasn’t gone before—marijuana. According to Digital Trends, a SpaceX cargo flight will transport cultures of cannabis and coffee to the International Space Station.

Musk’s SpaceX company isn’t carry weed into the silky darkness for a private smoke session aboard the ISS. The transportation is for an agri-tech company called Front Range Biosciences, which intends to study the impact of gravity might place on cannabis plants. In addition, the plants in question will be hemp, a variety of marijuana with minimal psychoactive properties.

Microgravity in space can produce some strange effects on plants. Previous experiments have shown that plants don’t actually require gravity for their roots to grow downward. However, plants will sprout along a “skewed” axis and express unique genetic mutations, as most plants do when facing brand-new environments.

“This is one of the first times anyone is researching the effects of microgravity and spaceflight on hemp and coffee cell cultures,” Dr. Jonathan Vaught, Front Range Biosciences co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. “There is science to support the theory that plants in space experience mutations. This is an opportunity to see whether those mutations hold up once brought back to earth and if there are new commercial applications.”

Not only do plants provide a nutritious benefit to scientists on a long space voyage (microgravity farm-to-table cuisine, anyone? ), it also presents a psychological aid as well. Think of how millennials who live in cramped apartments now want houseplants. It’s a similar mentality.

Hemp goes one step further. Not only could it be a food source, but also be used as biofuel or creating fabric for ropes or T-shirts. For transportation, 480 hemp cultures will be sent in temperature-controlled containers until they reach the ISS. There they will remain for 30 days as scientists in the University of Colorado observe their progress remotely.

What about Elon Musk’s marijuana habit? Well, Musk had to send a mass apology to SpaceX employees for his actions on the Joe Rogan podcast, where he lighted up a joint with the host. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine stated “that was not appropriate behaviour” and added that Musk won’t smoke weed again in public.

5 Of The Most Promising Cannabinoids

There are plenty of cannabinoids with restorative properties that haven’t really been explored in the past. Here are 5 of the most promising ones for the new year.

With so much buzz surrounding CBD and THC, it’s not surprising that most people forget or don’t know that there are hundreds of other cannabinoids that are also a part of the cannabis plant. These minor compounds have been associated with plenty of benefits that set them apart from CBD and THC.

CBD has  plenty of restorative properties that have lead to its inclusion in hundreds of products. But one of the main reasons why the cannabinoid has found so much success is because it’s the easiest and cheapest compound to extract and refine, thus, garnering the most attention and scientific-based interest.

Other cannabinoids with healing properties, such as CBG and CBN, are known as minor cannabinoids, and don’t have as much clout since their effects haven’t been all that explored. These tend to be known only by people who work in the cannabis industry, but they’re very promising in their own way, having shown promise in other aspects. Many of the benefits that these compounds produce are not shared by CBD or THC.

RELATED: Cannabis 101: Why Doesn’t CBD Get You Stoned?

Thanks to a growing understanding of the cannabis plant and to the development of new technologies, plenty of scientists and cannabis experts have begun to raise awareness of these new compounds and capabilities.

Here are some of the most promising cannabinoids for the upcoming year:

CBN (Cannabinol)

Cannabinol is known for two main traits: it has a powerful sedative effect and it’s also mildly psychoactive. This compound is a byproduct of THC and it’s found in small amounts in most cannabis strains. You can encounter it in edibles, topicals, sublinguals, vape cartridges and more. Interestingly enough, CBN was the first cannabinoid that was identified, and it was thought to be responsible for THC’s effect.

CBG (Cannabigerol)

Cannabigerol was one of the first compounds to be discovered, and is referred to as the “mother” or “stem cell” of all cannabinoids. “We know that CBG shows promise as an antibacterial agent and an anti-inflammatory,” John Huemoeller, CEO of AXIM Biotechnologies, tells Forbes. CBG has also been associated with improving moods, acting as a neuroprotectant, and possibly battling Huntington’s Disease and cancer cells.

THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)

Similar to THC in structure, THCV produces some psychoactive effects but has also been associated with suppressing appetite, battling diabetes, reducing panic attacks and stimulating bone growth. It has also been linked with managing some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

CBC (Cannabichromene)

CBC has plenty of wellness benefits. It’s known for fighting bacteria, migraines and stimulating brain growth. It has also been associated with analgesic effects, anti-depressant features, and producing anti-viral effects.

US House Not Strong Enough To Further Marijuana In 2019

Make no mistake about it, the country is still in the same lousy shape with respect to its marijuana laws than it was last year and the year before that.

For a group that keeps getting their butts handed to them every year, marijuana advocates sure are an optimistic bunch. All one needs to do is scour the Internet and they will find a list of fluffy stories talking about how 2019 was the best year yet for cannabis reform in the United States.

But the truth is, there weren’t any real victories to speak of, certainly not at the federal level, like the national advocacy organizations want America to believe. Nope, make no mistake about it, the country is still in the same lousy shape with respect to its marijuana laws than it was last year and the year before that. But what happened exactly to prevent pot from making significant strides? And is there any way in hell that we will see a different outcome in the new year?

Before Democrats took over the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of the year, there was a lot of discussion about how the party was going to make furthering the cannabis movement part of its agenda. Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, one of the founding members of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, was the most vocal about ushering in some change.

RELATED: How Impeachment Could Affect Marijuana Legalization

Last October, the lawmaker released what he called a “Blueprint to Legalize Marijuana in the 116th Congress,” which was perhaps an overly optimistic outline on how he and the other donkey-eared suits planned to end pot prohibition starting January 2019. And to be fair, they tried.

Two pieces of marijuana legislation (SAFE and MORE Acts) made their way through the House Judiciary Committee earlier this year, and SAFE (a banking bill disguised as pot legislation) actually earned itself a successful vote by the full House. Nothing like this had ever happened before.

Of course, the news that the lower chamber was finally taking action on pot-related measures sparked a bit of excitement on the scene. This was especially true in the case of the MORE Act, which seeks to end pot prohibition nationwide and toss money at communities ravaged by the drug war.

RELATED: The MORE Act Legalizing Marijuana Is Doomed — Here’s Why

There was even a little chatter on social media networks from some folks who believed that since the measure had been approved by a House committee, marijuana is now legal at the national level. Presumably, these folks are the ones who flunked U.S. government in high school.

Unfortunately, neither SAFE or MORE has a shot of going the distance this year in Congress, and that’s for one reason and one reason alone. The Senate still has all the power, and it’s not letting anything cannabis-related to be heard. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and crew are hanging on tight to the ways of prohibition, and that doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon.

In fact, it really depends on the outcome of the 2020 election as to whether pot reform will see some progress on Capitol Hill in the years to come. The Democrats have a shot next year at winning enough Senate seats to take over the upper chamber, establishing dominance on the Hill, tossing McConnell off of his throne and getting down to business. This, of course, would be good for marijuana.

RELATED: More Proof That Marijuana Banking SAFE Act Is Dead

But then again, we could just as easily see Republican rule in the upper chamber for six more years. And that’s not good for weed, not at all. Not unless the party and a reelected President Trump decides to take the issue under its wing, which is a possible scenario, according to Blumenauer. “If we fail to act swiftly, I fear as the 2020 election approaches, Donald Trump will claim credit for our work in an effort to shore up support — especially from young voters,” Blumenauer wrote in his 2018 Blueprint. “Democrats must seize the moment.”

But they never really did.

As of recently, the House focus has shifted to impeaching President Trump rather than doing anything to change the nation’s drug laws. There is even speculation that this act of vengeance and the lingering grudge may come back to haunt them if they do, in fact, take over Congress in 2021.

It’s anyone’s guess at this juncture how the 2020 election will shake out. But for now, it is essential to understand that House Democrats don’t have the power to legalize marijuana, no matter how many pieces of legislation they push through. And this year’s failure proves it. By all accounts, making the pot-loving public believe the House has enough clout to inspire change was the biggest failure of 2019. And sadly, America should expect nothing more than the same next year.

Punishing Drug Dealers Just Leads To More Violence And Deadly Narcotics

0

A new report calls into question whether current criminalization of drug dealers actually makes a difference in reducing drug harm and violence.

The “drug dealer” is an easy person to problematize and criminalize, as they fare in trading illegal substances between the netherworld and regular citizens. But a new report from the Drug Policy Alliance calls into question the prevailing legislative practices and penal punishments around drug dealers.

Beyond being ineffective, the current criminalization of supply-side drug dealers compounds the dangers and possible violence associated with drug use. Law enforcement’s stringent crackdown on drug trafficking has the opposite effect of its intent. To avoid carrying bulkier goods, which could get them caught, dealers have incentive to introduce more concentrated, potent versions of drugs like fentanyl — an opioid 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin.

RELATED: Trump Wants To Ramp Up The International Drug War

“Between 1980 and 2011, increasing penalties played a significant role in raising average prison sentences for federal drug law violations by 35%,” the DPA report, published Tuesday, reads. “But rather than seeing a reduction in drug use or an increase in prices over this period, drug use increased while prices fell dramatically.”

The report argues that the law, as currently constructed, allows too broad a definition for drug dealers. Those carrying a personal amount of drugs could be considered — and  arrested — as a dealer. Over the past 40 years, this has increased the number of people incarcerated for selling or distributing drugs by 3000%, from 15,000 in 1980 to 450,000 today. Furthermore, nearly half of dealers fit the criteria for substance use disorder, emphasizing the need for harm reduction initiatives.

“Despite the challenges of discussing supply-side drug policy reform in the midst of an overdose crisis, we cannot be silent while policymakers repeat the discriminatory, ineffective, expensive and dangerous mistakes of the past,” said Alyssa Stryker, the report’s author and former criminal justice policy manager at DPA.

RELATED: Are You Allergic To Marijuana?

Moving forward, the DPA recommended some practices to revert course include eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing and expanding sterile drug paraphernalia such as syringes and pipes. Overall, the report stressed the importance of dealing with drug dealers and users alike outside the realm of criminalization. In addition, policymakers need to focus on reducing harms associated with drug distribution rather than aiming to eliminate drug market activity altogether.

As Teen Use Rises, Study Finds Vaping Damages Lungs

0

Those who used vaping products were 1.3 times more likely to contract a respiratory disease when compared to those who didn’t use tobacco, according to the study.

The first long-term study conducted on e-cigarette and vaping products didn’t give users the reassurance they might have wanted. Though vaping manufactures claim using the product is “safer” than conventional tobacco products like cigarettes, it doesn’t answer whether vaping is safe at all. But now, researchers have determined that e-cigarette products are, in fact, damaging to lungs.

The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that the worst offense was smoking traditional cigarettes and vaping nicotine simultaneously. The behavior, which the study found to be common, significantly raised a user’s risk of experiencing lung complications.

Those who used vaping products were 1.3 times as likely to contract a respiratory disease when compared to those who didn’t use tobacco, according to the study. Those who smoked cigarettes, meanwhile, were 2.5 times more at risk than nonsmokers.

Representing the first longitudinal study into the effects of e-cigarette and vaping products, the research was conducted by scientists at UCSF’s Center for Tobacco Control Research. They collected data from users between 2013 and 2016, examining that vaping and smoking increased the risk of asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and COPD.

The report also found vaping did not aid tobacco users in quitting. Only 9% of tobacco users fully transitioned into only e-cigarette users. However, a whopping 91.2% of those who vaped were still smoking some kind of traditional tobacco product by the end of the three-year study. Those who both smoked traditional tobacco and vaped were 3.3 times at risk to develop the aforementioned respiratory diseases.

“Although switching from combustible tobacco, including cigarettes, to e-cigarettes theoretically could reduce the risk of developing respiratory disease, current evidence indicates a high prevalence of dual use, which is associated with increased risk beyond combustible tobacco use,” the study’s authors wrote.

“In addition, for most smokers, using an e-cigarette is associated with lower odds of successfully quitting smoking.”

The study coincides with a new report from the Monitoring the Future poll from the National Institutes of Health, which reported rising rates of adolescent vaping use. According to that poll, teenagers vaping had more than doubled in the past year. In the past year, 20.8% of 12th graders were vaping users and 19.4% of 10th graders. Most startling, the poll found 7% of 8th graders used e-cigarette products.

However, the poll also found continued declining rates in prescription opioid misuse, alcohol, and traditional tobacco products.

“We are heartened to see the continuing decline in the use of many drugs, particularly non-medical use of prescription opioids; however, teens are clearly attracted to vaping products, which are often concentrated amounts of drugs disguised as electronic gadgets,” NIDA Director Dr. Nora Volkow said in a statement. “Their growing popularity threatens to undo years of progress protecting the health of adolescents in the U.S.”

Italy Hopes To Nearly Triple Domestic Medical Marijuana Production

Last year, 578 kilograms of medical marijuana were sold to patients in Italy, and it is estimated the sum will be much bigger for 2019.

Medical marijuana production in Italy may triple in 2020 as the government aims to lesser its reliance on imports, according to Marijuana Business Daily.

The only organization with the license to cultivate medical cannabis in Italy, Stabilimento Chimico Farmaceutico di Firenze (SCFF), was recently authorized by Italy’s health ministry to produce 500 kilograms of cannabis flower in 2020, the publication said.

This year’s production is reportedly expected to total less than 200 kilograms.

Last year, 578 kilograms of medical marijuana were sold to patients in Italy, and it is estimated the sum will be much bigger for 2019. This indicates that domestic production has not met the demand in the country.

Massachusetts lifts vaping sales ban, Montana to enforce moratorium in latest state-by-state developments

A temporary ban on vaping product sales in Massachusetts was announced in September by Gov. Charlie Baker. The ban was initially set to end Dec. 24, but Baker decided to end it earlier on Dec. 11, according to Boston NPR affiliate WBUR.

“We were comfortable stepping back from the ban because the legislature created a series of restrictions around access to vaping products, especially for kids, and gave the Department of Public Health some pretty broad latitude to regulate the product and make sure people understand the risks going forward,” Baker said.

Multistate cannabis operator iAnthus Capital Holdings, Inc. (CSE:IAN) ITHUF 3.41% said Tuesday its Massachusetts subsidiary Mayflower Medicinals, Inc. will soon resume vaping sales.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission restarted the sale of vaping products by state-licensed operators, but only for products that produced on or after Dec. 12 that have been tested for vitamin E acetate and other contaminants, including heavy metals, the company said.

Vitamin E acetate has never been used in the manufacture of iAnthus vaping products, the company said.

Nevertheless, the ban is not in effect at the moment due to the pending litigations by vape store owners who argue the ban will crush their businesses, according to CNN.

Montana To Enforce Vape Ban Despite Pending Lawsuit

Montana’s health department announced Friday it will start enforcing its emergency ban on flavored vaping product sales starting Dec. 18, reports Montana Public Radio.

A temporary restraining order that stopped the ban from taking effect expired Oct. 28, the agency said.

The state is awaiting a ruling by Ravalli County District Judge Jennifer Lint on a motion by industry groups that are demanding a preliminary injunction against the ban, the radio station reported.

Ralph Graybill, chief legal counsel to Gov. Steve Bullock, said the state can’t wait for a decision any longer.

CBD Is Gaining More Traction In Treating Mental Illness

0

When one thinks about the psychological landscape of contemporary America, stories of PTSD and disturbing behavior abound. Furthermore, through the mass media, the people of the United States are continuously inundated images of violence, sickness, and despair. Looking at these notions with a critical eye, there is an underlying string of connectivity between mental illness and its subsequent manifestations in violent acts.

The catchphrase “mental illness” is an umbrella term that denotes an array of psychological afflictions including: anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and ADD. Moreover, studies show that “over 43 million Americans suffer from some form of mental illness, amounting to over 18% of US adults.”. While the United States stands out as a society saturated with psychological disorders, studies show mental illness as the “third leading cause of illness” globally.

The current state-of-affairs concerning mental illness and its treatments is wound up in a precarious situation concerning pharmaceutical drugs like Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax, and Klonopin — the drugs are often addictive and have dangerous side effects. To add insult to injury, when mentally ill people stop taking these prescribed medications they are often times more mentally unstable than before usage. Unfortunately, withdrawals from pharmaceutical anti-depressants and anti-psychotics sometimes lead to violent acts and suicide.

As the use of medical marijuana is becoming gradually accepted by mainstream America, medical researchers are exploring the uses of the herb’s various chemical compounds in more detail. To illustrate, THC is the primary psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant; THC has a wide variety of medical applications but generally does not alleviate mental illnesses as it causes anxiety and panic in many users. However, cannabis’s non-psychoactive compound CBD is gaining more traction as a viable, non-psychoactive, non-addictive treatment for a variety of mental disorders.

PTSD

Many scientists speculate that CBD is beneficial for those who sufferer from mental health conditions because it makes endogenous (created in the human body) compounds of the endocannabinoid system (a vast nervous system in the human body) more readily available. Point being, researchers believe CBD provides a chemical pathway in the human body that leads to healthier “bodily systems”—manifesting psychologically due to psychosomatic relations of the human mind and body.

Case Studies: PTSD

PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a psychological ailment that is beginning to gain the attention of CBD researchers. Symptoms of PTSD are exhibited in individuals who have experienced trauma and abuse in their lifetimes—the disorder is most noteworthy in military veterans and accident survivors.

CBD has proven beneficial in people with PTSD as it reportedly helps curb manifestations of both depression and anxiety related to traumatic events without the debilitating side effects of pharmaceutical medications. CBD’s effectiveness concerning PTSD is evident in the facts that States like Arizona are now recognizing PTSD as an ailment that warrants legal access to medical marijuana.

What Your Marijuana Consumption Method Says About You

Everything you do reflects something about your personality. Here’s what your consumption methods have to say about you.

Thanks to marijuana’s partial legalization, there’s plenty of ways to get high. You can vape, smoke joints, eat an edible, you name it. This means that your choices in product and methodology reveal something deeper than how you like to consume marijuana; it  sheds a light on your personality traits. This isn’t hard science, but we believe this list is pretty accurate. Here is what your marijuana consumption method says about you.

Joints

There are many methods of smoking marijuana, but there’s something special about smoking a joint. If you’re going through the trouble of purchasing rolling papers, weed, and filters before even getting to the main attraction of rolling a joint, it means that you likely appreciate the little things. Smoking weed for you is a habit that allows you to be in control. That or you’re kind of old and don’t feel like switching things up this late in the game.

CBD

If you’re an avid CBD consumer it means that you’re into trendy things and know what’s up. You’re probably a vegan, are super health conscious and like to put sweaters on your dog.

Pipe

If you smoke from a pipe it probably means that you’re too lazy to do anything better with your weed. You might be in college, your weed likely sucks, and your habit is temporary or at least recently acquired. In a couple of years you’ll either move on to better things or drop the habit entirely.

Bong

If you’re over 25 and still own a bong it means that you’re a pot head, and have likely been one for a while, especially if the device is shamelessly displayed in your home. Bongs are kind of pricey so you probably are a habitual smoker who likes to get high with the good stuff. As long as you don’t own one of those bong masks you should be fine.

Edibles

Like people who smoke joints, people who regularly consume edibles know what they’re doing and likely won’t go though a bad edible trip. Edible eaters honor their weed and are willing to spend a good amount of money for a valuable high. If they prepare their own edibles they might also be bakers.
