Does Hitting The Snooze Button Help Or Hinder Sleep?

To sleep or to snooze? You probably know the answer, but you don’t prefer it.

Most of us probably use the snooze function on our alarm clocks at some point in our lives. Just a few more minutes under the covers, a time to gather our thoughts, right?

While such snoozing might seem harmless, it may not be. For starters, it is important to understand why we are using the snooze button in the first place. For some it’s a habit that started early on. But for many, it can signal a significant problem with sleep. Poor sleep has been shown to be associated with a number of health disorders including high blood pressure, memory problems and even weight control.

I’m a facial pain specialist and have extensively studied sleep and how it impacts painful conditions. With testing, we discover that many of our chronic pain patients also suffer with various sleep disorders.

What does normal sleep look like?

If one is tired when the alarm goes off, is it helpful to use the snooze button? While there are no scientific studies that address this topic specifically, the answer is probably not. Our natural body clock regulates functions through what’s known as circadian rhythms – physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle.

Most adults require approximately seven and a half to eight hours of good sleep per night. This enables us to spend adequate time in the stages of sleep known as nonrapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM).

We tend to cycle from the three stages of NREM into REM sleep four to six times per night. The first portion of the night is mostly NREM deep sleep and the last portion consists of mostly REM sleep.

Good sleep is important

Maintaining this well-defined structure is important for good, restful sleep. If this process is disturbed, we tend to awaken still feeling tired in the morning.

A number of factors can affect the sleep cycles. For example, if a person is not breathing well during sleep (snoring or sleep apnea), this will disturb the normal sequences and cause the individual to awaken feeling unrestored. Sleep quality can be diminished by the use of electronic devices, tobacco or alcohol in the evening. Even eating too close to bedtime can be problematic.

The use of snooze buttons often starts during the teenage years, when our circadian rhythms are altered somewhat, causing us to want to stay up later and get up later in the morning. Delaying getting out of bed for nine minutes by hitting the snooze is simply not going to give us any more restorative sleep. In fact, it may serve to confuse the brain into starting the process of secreting more neurochemicals that cause sleep to occur, according to some hypotheses.

Bottom line: It’s probably best to set your alarm for a specific time and get up then. If you are consistently tired in the morning, consult with a sleep specialist to find out why.The Conversation

Here’s What That Extra Ring On Meghan Markle’s Ring Finger Is All About

The Duchess of Sussex has recently been spotted with some new bling on her ring finger. And it’s not her wedding ring. It’s called and “eternity” ring. Say, what?

Many people noticed the ring during her first post-baby outing last Saturday at the Trooping of the Colour parade, where she was photographed simply glowing and elegant alongside Prince Harry just one month after having baby Archie.

Royal sources have confirmed the new band is an anniversary gift from Prince Harry (the couple celebrated their first year together May 19). It joins her wedding and engagement rings as the new desirable accessory trifecta.

According to Kathryn Money, a VP at ethically sourced fine jeweler Brilliant Earth, told Fox News that this new ring appears to be a white gold or platinum eternity band set with pavé diamonds:

“Eternity diamond rings frequently represent a milestone such as an anniversary or the birth of a child. Brides have increasingly been seen stacking multiple wedding bands on their ring finger, including delicate minimalist bands or nested rings that embrace the center gemstone, creating a unique statement.”

This eternity-ring-as-anniversary-gift is nothing new amongst the royal family. It’s believed Prince William gave Kate one following the birth of their first child, Prince George.

Maybe Medical Marijuana Isn’t The Opioid Epidemic Savior After All

One of the more persistent arguments from pro-marijuana crowds is how legalizing weed can combat the opioid epidemic. Cannabis could be an exit drug out of opioid dependency and while maybe incapable of solving the opioid crisis, marijuana could at least be part of the solution. But a new study suggests there’s no significant link between medical marijuana laws and opioid overdose death rates.

A 2014 study generated the support for marijuana legalization in connection with decreasing opioid-related deaths. States that had medical marijuana access experienced lower opioid overdoses than the national averages. On average the difference was around 25 percent lower, according to Gizmodo. The study, which focused its attention between 1999-2010, also showed that as the years went on, the gap between opioid overdose rates in legal marijuana states vs. non-legal states grew.

However, a new paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences demonstrates medical marijuana laws having an opposite effect. A different set of researchers decided to run a similar analysis as the scientists behind the 2014 study, but with a focus on how the change in medical marijuana laws affected opioid overdoses post-2010. In 2010, only 10 states had medical marijuana access whereas now there are 33 states that have legalized medical marijuana in some form.

That introduction of new laws between 2010 and 2017, the connection between medical marijuana laws and opioid overdoses flipped. Whereas before medical cannabis reduced opioid overdoses, researchers found that new medical marijuana laws were associated with a 23% increase in annual opioid overdoses death rates. This connection held even when researchers accounted for the levels of strictness and differences in various medical cannabis legislation amongst states.

“If you believed the results of the first study, it’s hard to argue that you don’t believe the results of the second one, since the methods are the same,” Chelsea Shover, an author on the new PNAS study, told The Atlantic.

An important takeaway from the study, however, is that researchers aren’t bashing the positive medicinal effects cannabinoids can have. Instead they emphasized other factors involving the first states to legalize medical marijuana that resulted in the first study’s conclusions. Most of those states were in the Western states, where the opioid epidemic was slow to reach. Other factors amongst those states included lower incarceration rates, better health care access, and more effective treatment options for opioid addiction and overdoses.

“Cannabinoids have demonstrated therapeutic benefits, but reducing population-level opioid overdose mortality does not appear to be among them,” the study’s authors wrote.

What this represents, scientists said, was a need for better and deeper studies around cannabis. Due to the drug’s illegal federal status, researchers have had various obstacles to manage in studying the effects of marijuana properly. One researcher who was part of the original study, Chinazo Cunningham, told The Atlantic he doesn’t dispute this new research, but does believe cannabis can play a role in treating pain management.

RELATED: The Opioid Crisis Is Not About Pain

“Certainly cannabis is not a silver bullet. It’s not going to fix the opioid epidemic,” she said.

“When we have any sort of conflicting data like this, we need to be able to do randomized trials of cannabis,” Cunningham added. “And with the federal government’s policies, that’s nearly impossible to do.”

Until the government changes those policies—policies that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is currently trying to reverse—we won’t know the full extent of how medical marijuana affects the opioid epidemic. This new research, however, does indicate that just legalizing cannabis won’t be enough to roll back a force as destructive as opioid overdoses.

5 Ways To Make Friends Outside Of Work And School

If there’s not a work or school environment surrounding you, making friends can be really hard. A recent survey says that the average American hasn’t made a new friend in five years, especially if they’re over the age of 21.

Unlike dating, friendships are harder to pursue online, and might even be more complicated to nurture. In order to develop a real friendship you must find common ground with someone, run into them every now and then and enjoy each others’ company. It’s not easy, but it’s possible.

Here are five methods that can help you meet new people and make friends, no matter how shy and socially awkward you are.

Volunteer work

One of the reasons why making friends in school and college is so organic is because people are there for reasons other than making friends and meeting people. The fact that a larger motive brings you all together means that the pressure is off when it comes to socializing; you’ll only be doing it because you want to and because it’s the natural next step. Find a volunteer organization that is fulfilling and interesting to you. With some luck, this will bring you closer to people who are friendly and who are interested in the same things as you.

Join a club

Clubs are another great way to sneak in friendships inside an activity that you would otherwise enjoy on a regular basis. No matter the club – be it about books, working out, or food – it’s an activity that will bring you closer to people who have common interests, which is the basis of any type of friendship.

Travel alone

Traveling alone is a very effective method for meeting new people. These friendships tend to blossom quickly since you’re already pushing yourself out of your comfort zone by spending so much time alone. Adding another person to this equation results in a very vulnerable experience for everyone involved.

Solo trips are also special because they give you the opportunity to control the amount of time you spend with others and the time you spend alone. Of course, you still have to put into some effort. Go out to bars, stay in hostels and open yourself up to meeting others.

Go to a convention

Conventions are great if you’re the type of person who is really passionate about something, allowing yourself to have fun and blend in with hundreds of people who are all very excited to experience the same thing as you are. These places are also spots where there’s low pressure and that make you feel like everyday rules don’t apply.

Use apps

Apps like Bumble BFF and Friender are designed to develop friendships, which might feel a little awkward but hey, there are tons of success stories. There’s also Meetup which is an app that facilitates gatherings of people for classes, clubs and more.

There are endless tools at your disposal, so go out and make some new friends.

Attending The 2020 Tokyo Olympics? Don’t Bring Your Marijuana

The enduring motto of the Olympics is “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” but organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics warned visitors this week they better leave behind any thoughts of getting “higher” in Japan. More specifically, 2020 organizers noted to countries with more open marijuana laws like the United States that cannabis is prohibited in Japan.

“There are countries and some regions around the world that have relaxed rules recently,” said Toshiro Muto, chief executive of the Tokyo Olympics. “Unfortunately, the use of cannabis constitutes a violation of law and that needs to be thoroughly communicated.”

Muto admitted such a warning wasn’t something the committee initially planned on issuing. But at least one member of the executive board expressed concern about visitors, including athletes, not understanding weed is seriously banned in Japan.

“The comment from the member is that it’s important that we inform all the participants that use of cannabis is prohibited by law in Japan,” Muto said, speaking through his translator.

Japan has long held a zero-tolerance policy toward cannabis and narcotics in general. Just last year concern rippled throughout the country over rising cannabis rates amongst youth, who want to be “like foreign musicians.” In addition, the Japan Times reported 2018 was the first year marijuana users surpassed paint huffers in the country. A recent Japanese print advertisement instructed would-be drug users to just eat udon instead, just so you understand how tone-deaf the country can be regarding drugs.

Cannabis is among the list of banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency for the upcoming Summer Games. Muto emphasized that Japan would enforce anti-doping measures when the Olympics begin next July.

Bradley Cooper Was ‘Emotionally Absent’ From Relationship Before Breakup; Khloe And Kylie Called Out For Photoshopping (Another) Pic

Khloé and Kylie Are Being Called TF Out for Photoshopping This Pic

Via Cosmo:

Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian are teaming up again for round three of Koko by Kylie Cosmetics and naturally, they did a fancy shoot for the new launch. And also naturally, they’re being called out on Instagram for Photoshop.

FWIW, neither Khloé nor Kylie is exactly a stranger to Photoshop allegations, and their more iconic moments include Khloé accidentally giving herself two thumbs, Kylie accidentally giving herself an extra-long hand, and-most hilariously-Kylie and Khloé having the same feet in the family Christmas card.

And while there don’t seem to be any specific red flags in the pics from Khloé and Kylie’s new shoot, Khloé’s Instagram is floooooded with (pretty mean!) comments.

Kay, FIRST OF ALL, there is almost no picture on the internet at this point that isn’t photoshopped or Facetuned to some degree (and that includes celebrities and noncelebs alike). But also, Kylie and Khloé should be able to post whatever photos they want without an onslaught of negativity, right?

Bradley Cooper Was ‘Emotionally Absent’ From Relationship Before Breakup

Via iHeart Radio:

Last week it was reported that Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk called it quits after four years and one child together. Speculation about their relationship swirled during the promotional run for Coopers Oscar nominated A Star Is Born. A source close to the former couple is now revealing the film did actually play a significant role in their relationship’s demise, however, it had nothing to do with Cooper’s close friendship with co-star Lady Gaga.

“Bradley was emotionally absent during the long time filming A Star Is Born,” the source told People. “They tried to save the relationship but it had changed.”

“Since Bradley and Irina have always been very private about their relationship few knew there was really for sure something going on,” the source continued.

Despite making an effort to “slow down” and “focus on his family” after awards season, Cooper and Shayk couldn’t make things work. Another source explained they were still spending too much time apart after the A Star is Born hysteria died down. “They were living totally separate lives,” the insider said. “If he was in L.A., she’s out of town, and if she was in town, he was out of town.”

Neither Cooper or Shayk has publicly addressed their split.

Did Canada Blow Its Chance To Be The World Cannabis Leader?

Ahead of Canada legalizing recreational marijuana, excitement was high around the industry about the country emerging as a world cannabis leader. As one of only two countries with legal adult-use weed — Uruguay being the other — Canada has had every advantage to building its lead as a leader in research, business, and more. But for one top investment banker, the Canadian efforts haven’t been enough.

Neil Selfe, the INFOR Financial Group Inc. founder and CEO, told Bloomberg Canada “blew it” with regard to legalization, thanks to severe provincial and marketing regulations placed on the industry, as well as lacking innovative approaches to policy. Whatever cushion Canadians had is already eroding, as U.S.-based firms and businesses have outpaced their Canadian counterparts on the world stage.

RELATED: Why Marijuana Companies Are Rebranding Themselves As Health Care Companies

“I think we had a real chance to be global leaders,” Selfe told Bloomberg in their Toronto office.

“It’s a real consumer product in big U.S. states where it’s legal, and it isn’t that way yet in Canada despite the fact that we were first,” he added.

So far the only global leader in Canada Selfe would identify is Canopy Growth, as other Canadian pot stocks have not exploded as expected, in part because they were overpriced in the first place. Canopy has created a number of high-profile partnerships with big names like Seth Rogen while also partnering with the NHL to study how cannabis can impact concussion and pain relief amongst it players.

Selfe pointed to two major issues as proof of Canada’s struggles. One is Health Canada’s strict ban on effective cannabis marketing. “Unless authorized under the Cannabis Act, it is prohibited to promote cannabis or a cannabis accessory or any service related to cannabis,” reads the regulation. That includes no building a brand, celebrity endorsements, or “appealing to young persons.”

RELATED: Former Congressman Believes U.S. Will Legalize Marijuana By 2022

This is why Selfe says branding “doesn’t exist” for Canadian cannabis companies.

“It’s almost like you’re buying something dirty in brown paper bags,” he said. “It’s like liquor in the ’60s.”

Another is the prickly regulation of CBD. Currently, dried flower and oil CBD products can only be sold in dispensaries. Meanwhile, thanks the hemp regulations among other factors, CBD is everywhere in the United States and can be sold in Walgreens and coffee shops. “It’s a mess,” Selfe says, and unless Canada overhauls its cannabis policies, that probably won’t change anytime soon.

People Can’t Get Over How Perfect Meghan Markle’s Handwriting Is

Is there anything she’s not amazing at? Meghan Markle is already recognized as a fashion influencer, a new mom, and she’s married to a prince. And now we know she’s also skilled at a dying art: calligraphy.

Her impeccable handwriting first grabbed our attention last December, while the Duchess of Sussex was visiting the Brinsworth House nursing home in Twickenham. During a crafting session, Markle showed off her fancy penmanship.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BriKTJ6FTEB/

“Merry Christmas. Love, Meghan,” her note read.

Meghan told Esquire in 2013 that she learned the art of calligraphy during her time at an all-girls Catholic school, back when they still taught handwriting.

“I’ve always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well,” she said. “What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy for the invitations for, like, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding.”

She also put her skill to good use for Dolce & Gabbana’s celebrity correspondence over the holidays.

“I would sit there with a little white tube sock on my hand so no hand oils got on the card, trying to pay my bills while auditioning. I’m glad that in the land of no one seeming to appreciate a handwritten note anymore that I can try to keep that alive.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Pushes Measure To Increase Psychedelic Research

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has already aligned herself with cannabis reform, but now she’s pushing forward legislation that would make it easier for scientists to study the medical efficacy of psychedelics. Ocasio-Cortez’s measure would lift a barrier that many researchers claim makes it unnecessarily restrictive to analyze the medical benefits of psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA, and other drugs.

“From the opioid crisis to psilocybin’s potential w/ PTSD, it’s well past time we take drug use out of criminal consideration + into medical consideration,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “That begins with research. I’m proud to introduce an amendment that helps scientists do their jobs.”

RELATED: John Hopkins University Recommends Magic Mushrooms Be Rescheduled

Specifically, AOC’s measure is an amendment to a large-scale appropriations bill that would remove a rider that prohibits any federal funding being spent on “any activity that promotes the legalization of any drug or other substance in Schedule I [drug].” Under the Controlled Substances Act, cannabis is also considered a Schedule I drug, making it equally as difficult for scientists looking to study marijuana.

“Academics and scientists report that provisions like this create [stigma] and insurmountable logistical hurdles to researching Schedule I drugs,” AOC’s summary states.

Last month, Denver voters approved a measure that decriminalized magic mushrooms, becoming the first city to do so in the United States. And just last week, Oakland became the second city to decriminalize magic mushrooms. Oakland also decriminalized other entheogenic plants, including ayahuasca, ibogaine, and mescaline.

When A Pool Smells Like Chlorine It Means This

While a lot of us love the smell of chlorine because it makes us think of summer and suggests that the swimming pool is clean, the CDC says that’s not at all accurate. In fact, a pool that smells heavily of chemicals and chlorine likely means there’s a lot of bacteria and contaminants in there.

RELATED: 5 Ways To Add Cannabis To Outdoor Summer Fun

Chlorine is added to pools as a way of preventing germs, but the chemical is still affected by what comes off of swimmers’ bodies, like sweat, fecal matter, urine, deodorant, makeup and dirt. These contaminants mix in with the chlorine and result in chloramines, which are the chemicals responsible for pool smell. They appear more frequently in pools where there’s not a lot of ventilation, especially if these are located indoors.

Side effects of contact with chloramine include:

  • Nasal irritation, coughing, wheezing
  • Triggered asthma attacks
  • Red, itchy eyes
  • Skin irritation and rashes

RELATED: 4 Worst Summer Trends That Need To Go Away Immediately

A clean pool should have no smell at all and it should have a clear and blue-ish color. If the water is muddy and the feel of it is slimy, it means that the pool hasn’t been properly cleaned and that it can harm you skin. It’s also important to remember that, no matter how annoying and boring it is, you should always shower before you enter the pool in order to prevent the development of more chloramines. Sadly, peeing in the pool is also out of the question.
