Why Is Maisie Williams Posting Bloody Tributes To ‘Game of Thrones’?

As the rabid anticipation builds for the long-awaited final season of “Game of Thrones”, so too does the rabid speculation. Whenever an actor or anyone associated with the “Thrones” universe hints at how their story might end, reverberations echo across social media, dissecting “What it all means?” like an angsty middle school boy experiencing his first genuine emotion.

Which brings us to Maisie Williams’ cryptic Instagram post. Williams plays the iconic princess-turned-assassin Arya Stark on the show, and she recently wrapped her final shoot as Arya. Typically, we see actors and actresses post on social media to commemorate the end of a shoot, especially with franchise properties like “GoT”; a simple “thank you” to the cast and crew or a reflection on what the character meant to their life and career.

Williams did something similar, albeit with a strange twist. To bid farewell to Arya and her “GoT” family, Williams posted a pair of bloody sneakers. We assume it’s fake blood—it’s fake blood, right?—but it’s brow-raising that Williams would choose such a stark image for her good-bye message.

Are there spoilers here? Should we interpret this to symbolize Arya’s bloody conclusion? Or do the shoes she chose—Nike Air-Force 1s—represent the show’s dragons (because dragons are obviously the Air Force of Westeros) and their eventual demise?

Unfortunately, we wont know what any of this means—if anything—until “Game of Thrones” returns in 2019. Until then, let your imagination run wild with the bloody possibilities.

Does Meghan Markle Have A British Accent Now?

Accents are complicated creatures. They’re hard to imitate and even more difficult to get rid of. You may think your British accent is spot on, until you actually have a conversation with a British person and they tell you how dumb you sound. Still, accents and mannerisms can stick to you if you spend a lot of time in a foreign place.

This is seems to be the case with Meghan Markle, who, a la Madonna, is sporting a very light, yet unmistakable British accent.

Is the accent real or fake? Is it even possible for a person to adopt a British accent when they were born and raised in Los Angeles, California? Markle just got married in May. She has barely been in the U.K. long enough to know how to drink tea properly.

Conspiracy theory time. Since Markle is an actress, maybe she has an easier time adopting and accent? While it’s definitely strange, the accent produces results. According to one study, people who imitate accents may understand natives better, while also fostering feelings of closeness.

According to The Cut, it is possible to adopt a new accent, even though it’s very hard. In Markle’s case, it’s even harder since she’s been living in the U.K. for less than a year.

Jevon Heath, a linguist from the University of Pittsburgh, says that it’s almost impossible to absorb how people from other countries speak, even if you’ve been living there for years. “It can take years to become completely conversant in all features of a given speech variety, and most people, especially as adults, will never attain native-level fluency.”

Even though speaking like a native is almost impossible, it is very common for people to adopt certain elements of an accent. This is called “accommodation,” and it’s demonstrated when people adopt regional slang, sounds and intonation. This tends to happen unconsciously, and it might be what happened to Markle.

Nevada’s Cannabis Market Is Booming

The Nevada Department of Taxation last month reported that the state had already brought in 110 percent of expected revenue for the year — two months before the year was set to expire. The state, home to approximately 3 million people, draws crowds from around the world with their shows, lights, gambling and now recreational cannabis, which all greatly factor into the numbers.

One might assume that the majority of the 10-month’s worth of revenue equalling $55.53 million would come from sales, but cultivators have clocked in with an impressive $21.47 million up to the most current data.

In order to highlight the market trends of the last fiscal year, the department calculated that total taxable sales in Nevada are up $1.96 billion from the same time period last year. During that same time, cannabis sales went up to $338.38 million, meaning that the state has experienced over 17 percent growth in their taxable sales base since the launch of their legalization program.

Once the revenues for May and June of this year are in, we’ll know just how far the numbers have gone for the entire fiscal year and they’re sure to be exciting figures. With growth like this it paves a path toward more states getting on board with cannabis medical and recreational legalization, which is a win for proponents of marijuana everywhere.

The department’s report has a lot of impressive charts that show the data in a visual way that reveals that not only are sales and revenue surpassing predictions, they’re growing greatly by the month. You can easily watch the market soaring with their clear graphs and pie charts.

They also have a section of highlights of the fiscal year thus far, and they’re delicious morsels of anti-prohibition proofs, such as:

  • “Total taxable sales of adult-use marijuana to date is $340.57 million”
  • “Total combined taxable sales for medical marijuana, adult-use marijuana, and marijuana-related tangible goods for the first ten months of the
    fiscal year is $433.51 million”
  • “The Wholesale Marijuana Tax rate is 15 percent; the revenues from this tax, along with fees/penalties/assessments, first go to fund the Department’s costs of administering the marijuana program, $5 million per fiscal year goes to local governments, and the remainder goes to the state Distributive School Account”

It will be beyond interesting to see what the next fiscal year brings for the Silver State. One thing’s a safe bet: Nevada’s model of recreational legalization is likely to be picked up by other entrepreneurial states as well, while the U.S. map continues to turn green.

Xiaomi’s New Phone Looks Like The iPhone X And Might Be Even Cooler

Of the thousands of iPhone lookalikes you might be surprised to discover that one of the most original versions comes from a relatively unknown Chinese company. Xiaomi announced their Mi 8 Explorer Edition at the end of June and instantly caused controversy.

The back of the device is transparent and  features several chips and high quality components that are visible and are there for aesthetic reasons, serving no actual purpose. While Xiaomi states on their website that not all of the exposed parts serve a function, some critics felt like it was false advertising, especially since some of these components are of high quality.

According to Engadget, the fact that the phone has parts that don’t do anything shouldn’t matter, because it still performs really well.

A post shared by #KamiSukaReview (@review1st) on

The device, aside from featuring all the things that we expect modern smartphones to include, also has an in-display pressure sensitive fingerprint sensor. Even though most phones now are concerned with Facial ID, fingerprint sensors are still important and worth developing since they give users more freedom when it comes to accessibility.

While the MI 8 joins a long list of devices that are inspired by the look of the iPhone X, it’s also one of the most interesting ones, with an estimated price of $580. These devices are currently not available within the U.S., but it would be fun to see how Xiaomi’s phones would perform and if they could pose a threat to Apple and Samsung, forcing these companies into more creative routes.

Coming Soon: World’s Largest Museum Dedicated To Cannabis

The Weedon, Quebec CannaCentre is set to be a very interesting place to visit. MYM Nutraceuticals Inc. has partnered with The Sherbrooke Historical Society to create a museum dedicated to cannabis, the first of its kind in Canada.

The Centre will be located at MYM’s flagship cannabis production facility in Weedon, on their newly established 329 acres of land, much of which was purchased through its partially owned subsidiaries and will now be greatly dedicated to cannabis filled greenhouses totalling 1.5 million-square-feet of grow space.

The historical society will be recommending management style at the museum. An MYM press release states, “To help the Sherbrooke Historical Society in this mandate, an Advisory Committee will be established, comprised of Weedon residents, representatives from the MRC du Haut-Saint-François, as well as from the region’s tourist and cultural sectors.”

This will be the world’s biggest, zero carbon footprint, CannaCentre. Aside from housing a marijuana museum, the property will boast an education centre, which will work with universities in the realm of botany. There will be degrees and vocational programs available onsite, with certifications regarding the cannabis plant and operations from seed to sale.

They also plan to have an attached a lab, a testing facility and an auditorium for lectures that is slated to hold over 2,000 people. There will be a health care clinic that will include an impressive twenty-two 1000-square-foot apartments for various treatments. “This plan will make Weedon the cannabis capital of Canada,” states the MYM website.

It will be interesting to see what will be on display at the new museum to say the least. Will the drug war be covered alongside the brave burgeoning world of legalization that it created? Will American and other foreign hemp and cannabis heroes make the cut or will it be a predominantly Canadian themed display?

The entire compound sounds like a cannabis haven regardless, and the treatment based apartments lend hope for many very ill patients. It’s surprising in some ways that a cannabis museum is breaking new grounds in Canada just now, but it’s a welcome surprise and we look forward to seeing the artwork and materials they choose to display for the education and entertainment of their guests.

O’Rourke Joins Willie Nelson For Weed Jam Session

Whenever you can join Willie Nelson on stage for a jam session, you don’t think twice about it. But you have to give it to Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic candidate challenging Ted Cruz for his Senate seat, who decided to join the cannabis icon in Texas to sing some old tunes, including Nelson’s more weed-leaning anthems.

According to the Austin American-Statesmen, O’Rourke originally was scheduled just to announce the fireworks at Willie’s Picnic, the annual Fourth of July event hosted by the country singer. But O’Rourke stuck around, strumming and singing along to Nelson’s “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die.” As the Dallas Morning News wrote, it was “a message on brand for famous pothead Willie Nelson and O’Rourke’s pro-marijuana legalization stance.”

After playing the song, Nelson gave a shout out to the politician. “Thank you, Beto!” Nelson said, before they continued the cannabis vibes going with a rendition of “It’s All Going To Pot.”

Cruz couldn’t resist the opportunity to poke at his opposition after the video went semi-viral. “Seems not to have learned Toby Keith’s words of advice,” Cruz wrote on Twitter, adding a link to a performance by Keith and country music artist Scott Emerick singing how they’ll “never smoke weed with Willie again.”

New York Is Encouraging Banks To Work With Cannabusiness

The New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) is urging state-chartered banks and credit unions to work with fully compliant medical marijuana business.

Earlier this month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a lengthy 10-page statement asking the DFS to help support safe banking services for marijuana businesses, stating, “Because marijuana currently is still listed on Schedule I under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, medical marijuana and industrial hemp-related businesses operating in accordance with New York State laws and regulations continue to have difficulty establishing banking relationships at regulated financial institutions.”

The ability to establish a banking relationship is an urgent issue today for the legal cannabis industry. So long as it remains difficult to open and maintain bank accounts, the industry will largely rely on cash to conduct business and operate.

The cash-intensive industry creates risks for companies and investors alike. But will banks actually follow this advice?

It certainly helps that it comes from a lofty institution like DFS, but ever since Jeff Sessions became the U.S. Attorney General and rescinded the Cole Memo, things may not be that easy. BUT…according to Green Rush Daily:

DFS says that Sessions’ rescinding the policy of Obama’s Justice Department did not affect a lesser-known provision called the “Fincen guidance.” The Fincen guidance is a memo from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. And it aims to assist financial institutions in providing services to cannabis-related businesses.

“In issuing the guidance, Fincen sought to enhance the availability of financial services for, and the financial transparency of, legal marijuana-related businesses,” the memo states.

Furthermore, DFS says that a bi-partisan coalition of legislators is supporting the Fincen guidance, helping to keep it in effect.

The Treasury Department has stated that it’s reviewing the Fincen guidance along with the feds.

Prince Harry Spent $10K On This Christening Gift For Prince Louis

Prince Harry sure has this “favorite uncle” thing down pat! He just spent $10K on a first edition Winnie the Pooh book for his new nephew’s christening.

According to The Sun, Harry plans to start a library for Prince Louis in honor of his late mother Princess Diana.

The Duke of Sussex got his hands on the 1926 A. A. Milne book, thanks to Peter Harrington in London. How rare is the book? Only  30,000 were printed in the first run.

The Sun quotes a friend of Harry’s as saying, “One of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read a bedtime story by his mother. She loved all the old classics and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, Charlotte and George to enjoy as they get older.”

Gal Gadot Visits Children Hospital Dressed As Wonder Woman

It’ll be awhile before the kids from Inova Children’s Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia get a surprise that rivals the one they received last Friday when actress Gal Gadot swung by dressed as her superhero alter ego, Wonder Woman.

The doctors and employees of the hospital uploaded images of the encounter, where Gadot is seen cuddling a baby and posing with different people. The employees thanked Gadot for “bringing her superpowers to the kids.”

“Some days are just WONDERFUL!!! So grateful for the stunningly gorgeous and kind Gal Gadot for bringing her superpowers to the kids at work!!! #wonderwoman #ilovemyjob” said Jaime Gentille, one of the hospital’s employees.

Gadot brought presents to the kids, such as coloring books and dolls. The actress is filming the sequel to Wonder Woman in nearby locations, including Alexandria, Virginia and Washington D.C.

Wonder Woman joins other superheroes in brightening up the days of kids while visiting them in hospitals. In the past, other actors such as Chris Evans and Chris Pratt have visited Seattle Children’s Hospital while wearing their Captain America and Star Lord costumes.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to premiere in theaters on November 2019.
