From Grindr’s latest Dallas buzz to Tinder’s double-digit convention spikes, the data suggest big political gatherings may be as much about hookups as politics
The Republican Party arrived in Dallas this week for its first-ever national midterm convention. The party through leaders like Pete Hesgeth, has been focus on project alpha male, but almost immediately, Grindr became part of the conversation, again. So it begs the question, do political conations make hook up apps spike?
On September 9, as thousands of Republicans, campaign workers, journalists and political operatives descended on Dallas, Downdetector showed a cluster of reports involving Grindr. The timing was hard to miss: the reports appeared as the GOP convention got underway at the American Airlines Center. Downdetector tracks user reports of apps like Grinder.

The more interesting question is whether political conventions really drive people onto dating and hookup apps.
The answer appears to be yes.
And it isn’t just Grindr.
At the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Grindr reported a 66% increase in activity around the convention venue. At that year’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Grindr reported an even larger 148% increase. The company said a significant portion of the users were visitors to the area rather than regular local users.
Then look at Tinder.
During the 2016 Republican convention in Cleveland, Tinder reported an 82% increase in usage compared with the previous week. At the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, Tinder usage rose 54%. In other words, the conventional dating app showed the same basic pattern: political conventions brought more people onto the platform, regardless of party.
There is even older evidence. During the 2015 Conservative Political Action Conference. At the 2015 Conservative Political Action Conference, Reason TV created a Grindr profile specifically to see whether gay conservatives were among the convention crowd. They found a surprising number of gay men attending CPAC who were active on the app. And Tinder reported a staggering 202% increase in usage in the National Harbor area compared with the previous week.

This makes the political convention hookup phenomenon considerably more interesting than the recurring joke about Republican delegates using Grindr. The numbers suggest something broader is happening when large political gatherings take over a city.
Thousands of people who don’t normally live together suddenly occupy the same hotels, restaurants, bars and convention centers. Dating apps are specifically designed to connect people based on proximity. Put tens of thousands of visitors into a concentrated geographic area, and the potential dating pool suddenly changes dramatically.

The 2024 Republican convention in Milwaukee provided another data point. Grindr CEO George Arison later confirmed there had been a “significant spike in usage” during the convention, while also clarifying the app had not actually crashed.
So far, Dallas is the newest chapter—but not necessarily the strangest.
The available evidence suggests political conventions may create a temporary dating-app economy of their own. And if future data from Grindr, Tinder or other platforms show similar increases during major Democratic and Republican gatherings, the conclusion may be surprisingly simple:
Politics may divide Americans.But put thousands of them in the same city for a few days, and their dating apps seem to bring them together.
