Convalescent Plasma: What Is It And Can It Fight COVID-19?

“Convalescent plasma” is plasma that’s been removed from the blood of a person who has recovered from a disease, such as coronavirus, and transfused into a patient who needs help fighting the same disease.

Still in its early stages of research, the FDA is looking into whether or not convalescent plasma is a viable option for the treatment of coronavirus, a pandemic plaguing the globe. The Mayo Clinic explains the use of convalescent plasma as, “people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies — proteins the body uses to fight off infections — to the disease in their blood. The blood from people who’ve recovered is called convalescent plasma. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood.”

In early May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated their guidance and information on convalescent plasma, saying, “Because COVID-19 convalescent plasma has not yet been approved for use by FDA, it is regulated as an investigational product.” As a non-approved treatment, plasma therapy undergoes strict criteria in its testing and use. The FDA recommended the first step in utilizing convalescent plasma was to seek it out from, “an FDA-registered blood establishment.”

Here are three things the FDA wants you to know about what’s currently underway with convalescent plasma:

  • A website has been set-up with information and resources to help health care practitioners, researchers and the public.
  • Those who want to study the use of convalescent plasma in a clinical trial setting should submit requests to CBER’s Office of Blood Research and Review by email: CBERDCC_eMailSub@fda.hhs.gov.
  • If patients or physicians need to receive convalescent plasma, the FDA has stated it will respond to requests between 8am EST and 8pm EST (Mon-Sun) within four hours. To apply for the use of the plasma, a requesting physician may contact FDA by completing this form and submitting by email: CBER_eIND_Covid-19@FDA.HHS.gov.

With researchers looking into whether or not the plasma can elevate a patient’s ability to fight infection, it’s shown promising traits in recent research. Published late April in the Proceedings of The National Academy Of Sciences (PNAS,) a team of researchers found, “CP can serve as a promising rescue option for severe COVID-19, while the randomized trial is warranted.” Focused on finding an immediate treatment for coronavirus, the team looked at ten different patients in hospitals in Wuhan, China and found interesting results. According to PNAS:

“ The pilot study on CP therapy shows a potential therapeutic effect and low risk in the treatment of severe COVID-19 patients. One dose of CP with a high concentration of neutralizing antibodies can rapidly reduce the viral load and tends to improve clinical outcomes. The optimal dose and treatment time point, as well as the definite clinical benefits of CP therapy, need to be further investigated in randomized clinical studies.”

A detailed document from the FDA can be seen here; offering key insights and information around the use of the experimental treatment and what precautions are in place.

Gummy Products Are Changing The Way People Think About CBD

Innovative hemp products, such as CBD gummies, are now being combined with essential vitamins and nutrients merging CBD and health in intriguing ways.

When CBD first entered the marketplace the products were limited and consumers lacked knowledge so they were skeptical. The years have passed and the CBD market has exponentially expanded with innovative products being created to cater to all walks of life. Additionally, more information and knowledge is being discovered for the public to digest.

CBD is already loaded with so many benefits, but CBD companies have taken things a step further in building on the convenience factor of their products. Innovative hemp products like CBD gummies are now being combined with essential vitamins and nutrients merging CBD and health in intriguing ways. According to a new report by Grand View Research, “The global CBD gummy market size is expected to reach USD 6.94 billion by 2025, exhibiting a 31.9% CAGR over the forecast period”.

Perhaps the reason for such growth in this market is that people love the convenience, taste, and benefits that can be hard-pressed into candy-like form.

What To Expect When You Take A CBD Gummy

If you are accustomed to taking CBD sublingually, you need to be aware of the fact that the CBD will take longer to take effect and may feel lighter. If you are new to CBD, gummies are a great option because the doses are low.

How To Find The “Right” CBD Gummy

It may seem to be a daunting task to shuffle through hundreds of CBD companies to check out different options, but there are a few things to keep in mind while trying to find the one best suited for your personal needs.

RELATED: Here’s What Kind Of CBD Product Is Most Popular In Each State

You should start by figuring out what dosage you are looking for. The common mg per CBD gummy is 10 mg, but some companies have 5 mg. This is nice because you can dial back the effects if you need it to be lighter for work or school situations, or even double up if you’re having “one of those days”.

You should figure out if you want a gummy that is strictly CBD, or if you would like the one that is geared towards nutrition. There are options that have included vitamins such as essential B vitamins, nutrients such as turmeric and spirulina and apple cider vinegar, and even ginger. I’m sure there are more options, but these are some of the options I’ve seen. There are also multivitamin gummies with CBD!

RELATED: Myths Vs. Facts: Everything You Should Know About CBD Gummies

Another aspect to consider is if you want to feel the intoxicating effects of THC. If you don’t, you should opt for a hemp-based gummy as they contain less than 0.3% THC, and if you don’t want any chance of it showing up on a drug test (even as a false positive) make sure to purchase a broad spectrum gummy.

I would also like to point out that all CBD companies are not created “equally”. This means that some companies are out to make a quick buck using the lowest quality ingredients and using fillers that are artificial and toxic. Make sure to align yourself with a company that offers batch level 3rd party testing on their products. When you read this certificate of analysis you are able to see exactly what went into your product. You can also google some of the ingredients you don’t know so you do your own research and become a mini CBD expert in the process. Top-notch CBD companies will offer full transparency because they are proud of what they put into their products!

Do They Actually Work?

CBD gummies contain CBD oil (cannabinoids) and have been noted to relieve issues such as insomnia, stress, anxiety, pms symptoms, menopause symptoms, adhd, alzheimer’s, and much more. The reason CBD is so effective is because the cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system and have positive effects on the central nervous system. The endocannabinoid receptors are located in the brain, and in fact, receptors are said to be located in all parts of the body. It seems almost impossible that CBD wouldn’t be able to work, from a “scientific” standpoint. Some people have even argued that you might feel a placebo effect, but of course, that’s up for a heavy debate.

Conclusion

The CBD market is rapidly expanding and the products are becoming more innovative to keep up with the demand. People are utilizing gummies in all aspects of their lives from women’s health, pain management, health, and fitness, as well as using it to manage certain illnesses that cause seizures or neurological issues. The beauty of CBD is that it’s so versatile and can fit into all walks of life. Whatever the reason you might feel the need to incorporate CBD into your daily routine, it will not disappoint, you just have to find the right product for yourself!

Why We Should Reach For Marijuana When We’re Angry

Cannabis helps people to put themselves in others’ shoes. There’s even the chance that after passing the weed back and forth a few times that laughter will ensue.

Anger. Sometimes it’s self righteous, sometimes it’s about love, sometimes it’s fueled by fear, but it often comes in pairs, especially when a couple or a couple of friends get heated. Being passionate is a good thing, but so is maintaining relationships and even your cool. Marijuana is the great moderator, and for more reasons than you might thing.

When we feel justified in our outrage, especially with someone we care about, it can be hard to see past our own side of the argument. Things get said that should have stayed under wraps. One of the best ways to slow down the racing thoughts fueling your rage is to pick up the pipe, vaporizer or joint and have a few tokes.

If there’s only one takeaway from this story, it’s that rising above fear, hate, outrage and an abundance of self righteousness takes willpower. It takes the willpower to stop mid-rant and consider your headspace. It takes guts to stop an argument in its tracks, and having the reward of a calming hit or three of cannabis or concentrates also helps reset the mind.

With two people at each other’s throats about anything from politics to child rearing to whose fault whatever is, the ultimate best thing to do is to stop, lock eyes with all of your might and pull out the bong. There’s a reason toking is often referred to as passing the peace pipe.

Adversaries can more easily see that their stances aren’t the only ones and cannabis helps people to put themselves in others’ shoes. There’s even the chance that after passing the weed back and forth a few times that laughter will ensue. Sometimes it’s easy to hold fast to ideas that turn out to be either ridiculous, overstated or deeply personal. When it’s the latter, being able to recognize issues for what they are — and aren’t — is crucial.

Marijuana opens the mind in many ways. Creatives use it during their processes, patients use it to combat their symptoms and ailments, everyday people use it to relax, and pretty much everyone who uses it does so for a pleasant experience.

It’s no wonder that cannabis is truly the wonder drug for anger. In all truth, marijuana is sometimes going to be the common ground that elevates an argument to a conversation, and anger to understanding.

5 Ways To Stay In Touch With People While Social Distancing

Staying in touch with friends and family is vital in the midst of a pandemic, even if states are encouraging people to remain socially distanced.

No matter where you live, it’s likely that your state is enforcing some sort of social distancing guidelines. These temporary measures are meant to be strict, keeping us from our friends and family in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, and they’re a sign of our troubled times. Although there’s no way of knowing how social activities will look in the future, we’ll most likely be spending more time at home as a way of reducing our contact with others and protecting our households from the virus.

Still, no matter how informed you are and how much you Zoom, many of us feel frustrated and lonely due to the current situation. The best option is to get creative with how we communicate with our friends and family. The happier we are with our social lives, the more likely it is we’ll have a positive outlook and disposition throughout this whole thing.

Here are 5 creative ways that’ll allow you to stay in touch with the people you miss most.

Keep your friends with you

We’re all tired of phone calls and video chats, but they’re the safest and most efficient way of staying in touch with the people you love. If you’re bored of the Zoom format, one thing you could try is to hang there with your friends while you do something else, like cook. If video chat parties aren’t your thing, try having personal calls and video chats with just your closest friends.

Get social on social media

Try socializing with other people on social media, whether it’s someone you’ve been following for years, a friend you haven’t spoken with in a long time, or a stranger who posted something cool. If you’re looking for something different and a space where you can interact with like-minded people, you could try joining a virtual chat room like the ones available on Discord or Slack.

Get comfortable with voice notes

Voice notes are a step above text messages and a step below phone calls. They’re a good balance for those who don’t enjoy phone call but are craving a bit more contact with others. Voice notes are a great option since you can record and listen to them while doing other things. It’s as easy as downloading an app on your phone.

Join virtual events

Small businesses, schools and communities are getting creative with social distancing, creating plenty of virtual events that celebrate all sorts of things from holidays to happy hours. As the days pass and people grow more comfortable with this new way of communicating, more events of this type will appear that will bring a little normalcy to our lives.

Be aware of your state’s guidelines

The coronavirus pandemic has affected states to different degrees. Be aware of what your community leaders are saying and be sure to comply with their guidelines. If it’s possible to meet up with others by following social distance guidelines and occupying open spaces, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t catch up with those who live nearby. Get informed and try to adapt to this new reality as best as you can.

Dispensary Job Market Still Strong Despite Lockdowns

While the pandemic means fewer employees on the sales floors, it also means a surging need for workers to process and package online and phone orders for mail, vehicle delivery, and curbside pick-up.

Leafly, the largest cannabis website in the world, issued its fourth annual Cannabis Industry Jobs Report in February, roughly a month before the outbreak of Covid-19 was officially declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. Leafly’s report revealed that America remains the legal cannabis industry’s biggest employer despite a downturn related to “a slow-growing Canadian market, shrinking investment capital, a national vaping health crisis, and layoffs at some of the industry’s leading brands.”

The future still looked bright for jobs in the legal cannabis industry, designated by Leafly’s report as the fastest-growing job sector in the United States as of early February 2020. But now that the Covid-19 pandemic has detonated an economic bomb across the globe, the future of cannabis employment may look decidedly different.

In an April article for legal website FindLaw by staff writer Bridget Molitor, JD, she articulates the various jobs that the legal cannabis industry offers. These jobs include roles in growing, producing, manufacturing, and sales, but given persistent concerns about the perils of working in close proximity to others, the cannabis industry will need to pivot a greater proportion of its workforce towards more autonomous models for its job market to remain viable.

Work-from-home cannabis careers were out there before Covid-19 crashed the economy, and by the looks of listings on popular job search websites like Monster and Indeed (not to mention industry-specific sites like Vangst420 Careers and Ganjapreneur.com), opportunities to work from home are more abundant than ever. Remote sales, online support, brand ambassadors, content writers, and web designers are in high demand.

RELATED: Despite Layoffs, Cannabis Industry Job Growth Continues To Boom

For those willing and able to venture out in states like California and Colorado, which declared both medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries “essential businesses” during the lockdown, jobs as cannabis delivery drivers are also on the rise. In April, reporter Luke Winkie followed up on an earlier story for The Goods, which publishes market-oriented content for Vox.

5 questions you should ask yourself before visiting a marijuana dispensary

Winkie checked back in with an L.A. area cannabis delivery driver who he interviewed in a previous article. The driver confirmed that business had “never been better” due to panic buying and the “stay-at-home” order.

RELATED: 5 Of The Hottest Jobs In Cannabis Right Now

It may be a long time before the 6 feet social distancing rule becomes a thing of the past. Until then, retail establishments need to find ways to maintain sales volume without endangering customers. While this will mean there could be fewer employees on the sales floors, it also means a surging need for workers to process and package online and phone orders for mail, vehicle delivery, and curbside pick-up.

The legal marijuana industry sustained multiple hits to its profit margin in 2019, and still managed to maintain its status as a dominant sector of the U.S. jobs market. With that crucial advantage, and if the ubiquity of remote cannabis-related jobs crowding the job boards is any indication, the industry may be poised to weather the economic crisis better than most.

Fact Check: Is Marijuana’s CBD Psychoactive Or Not?

While further research is needed into the effects of CBD on ones body and mind, evidence so far indicates that it can alter the activity of naturally occurring cannabinoids.

In his article “Cannabidiol Claims and Misconceptions” (Trends in Pharmacological Sciences 38, 198-201; 2017), Dr. Ethan Russo debunks the misconception that CBD is non-psychoactive and non-psychotropic:

“CBD is frequently mischaracterized in lay, electronic, and scientific sources as ‘non-psychoactive’ or ‘non-psychotropic’ in comparison to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but these terms are inaccurate, given its prominent pharmacological benefits on anxiety, schizophrenia, addiction, and possibly even depression. More accurately, CBD should be preferably labeled as ‘non-intoxicating’, and lacking associated reinforcement, craving, compulsive use, etc., that would indicate a significant drug abuse liability.”

Katie Stem, CEO of Peak Extracts (OR), offers the broadest definition of psychoactive as a substance that has an effect on the brain, although some reduce it down to something that has a discernible effect on mood, perception or behavior.” As she notes, many substances have an undeniable impact on brain chemistry, but little to no intoxicating effect. For example, caffeine, antidepressant medications, and nicotine are often described as having psychoactive properties.

The word psychotropic can also be used in this context, as it describes a drug that has an effect on mental state,” she adds.

While all psychedelics are psychoactive, relatively few psychoactive substances are psychedelic.

Psychedelic is usually described as discernible alterations in perception, which may include any of the five senses. Sensations could be altered or heightened, and the perception of time is often dilated,” Stem observes.

RELATED: Reefer Madness: Can Using Marijuana Lead To A Psychotic Break?

In addition, psychedelic most often refers to visual or auditory hallucinations that you know are not real (as opposed to psychosis). Some pharmacologists classify cannabis as being a hallucinogen as cannabis use can be associated with perceptual changes. It’s a category cannabis is often defaulted to, since it doesnt neatly fit the category of depressant or stimulant.

While further research is needed into the effects of CBD on ones body and mind, evidence so far indicates that CBD can alter the activity of naturally occurring (endogenous) cannabinoids rather than directly affecting cannabinoid receptors.  Because cannabinoid receptors are located broadly throughout our bodies, many effects are possible such as mediation of pain, inflammation, sleep, and digestion.

RELATED: Sorry, But Your CBD Hemp Products Probably Contain Some THC

Applying CBD topically will produced localized effects on the region where the topical was administered. But one will not experience any psychoactive effects. Taking CBD internally will have broader effects, and is deemed psychoactive.

Like with any substance, there can be some side effects from taking CBD. Some people can experience drowsiness especially if this is the first time theyve tried CBD. Also, since CBD is an anticonvulsant, it may have an effect on mood.

Any side effects will vary depending on ones individual endcannabiniod system and how much CBD was consumed. When first trying CBD, start with 2 to 5mg, and then build up the amount slowly until one can assess the best dosage for ones individual needs.

How To Take Care Of Your Libido When In A Full House

It is an interesting  time but it has taught us to be creative with our libido when trapped in a house full of people.

Time is weird under quarantine. It can feel eternal, like when you have to complete a single work task, but it can also zoom by when you’re scrolling through social media only to realize that you’ve wasted three hours of your time.  And then you feel even more frustrated.  To help out, here is how to take care of your libido when in a house full of people.

What many have discovered during lockdown is that boredom results in more time spent doing comforting things, such as binging a show you’ve already seen thousands of times or masturbating. Researchers are observing all sorts of behaviors from people and their libidos, with some reporting more horniness than usual and others the complete opposite. All reactions are valid.

Masturbating is a good way of keeping your mood up, whether you need a boost or simply want to feel something other than anxiety. In the words of the New York Health Department, masturbating is also the safest kind of sex you can have nowadays, so there’s that.

Despite all of this, masturbating is hard to do if you’re living with family members or roommates during the pandemic. Here’s how to find some privacy and sneak in a little relifed:

Music is your ally

Playing some music will ensure that all strange sounds are kept to a minimum. We’re not talking death metal or rock. Choose some music that is nice and relaxing and keep the volume to a manageable level. That way you can keep an ear out for people who may be walking by.

Lock your door

RELATED: Show And Tell: Sexting And Nudes Are On The Rise

Locking your door is very useful while in quarantine, especially once you’ve been cohabitating with others for a long period of time and boundaries start to crumble. Have an excuse ready if someone knocks on your door to manage the awkwardness.

Soundproof your room

If you’re still feeling a little anxious over getting caught, cover the gaps in your room with towels and use headphones if you’re watching porn. Still, be careful if you decide to soundproof your room, since it’s possible it will create more questions.

Make up an excuse for your alone time

RELATED: How Coronavirus Might Change Dating For The Better

Before you do anything, make sure to have a block of time that’s exclusive for you, whether you’re living with a roommate, family member or significant other. Depending on your audience, you can be honest or say that you’re going to do some work, send out some emails, etc./

Get creative if there’s no space

If you’re living in a situation where there’s literally no doors and space for yourself, get creative. Use your shower time wisely and don’t be ashamed of needing alone time. When living with others and having little space to yourself, alone time is a matter of mental health, so find a way to get some.

How CBD May Be Able To Help Your Dog’s Epilepsy

It’s estimated that less than 1% of the overall dog population suffers from seizures, but some breeds — such as Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Shepherds — have a higher rate.

Seizure treatment was one of the first and most well-documented areas of cannabis medical research conducted on humans. The only FDA-approved use of CBD, in fact, is in the medicine Epidiolex, which is used for treating epileptic seizures.

So it’s only logical that epilepsy was one of the first conditions researched when veterinarians started looking into the effects of cannabis on man’s best friend.

A 2019 study published in the journal Pet Behavior Science showed CBD treatment might be able to help dogs suffering from the symptoms of epilepsy, including seizures.

The most common form of seizures in dogs is called idiopathic epilepsy, and it is an inherited disorder – meaning it passes from a grown dog to its pups. Epilepsy is defined as two “unprovoked seizures” more than 24 hours apart, and idiopathic means the cause of those seizures is unknown.

It’s estimated that less than 1% of the overall dog population suffers from seizures, but some breeds — such as Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Shepherds — have a higher rate. More than 9% of Belgian Shepherds, for example, suffer from epilepsy.

RELATED: The Truth About CBD For Your Pets

When researchers went to study the impact of CBD on epilepsy, they did a small trial on three dogs: a Labrador, a Pappillion and a Chihuahua. Turns out, the CBD had a positive impact on the Labrador and the Chihuahua, but not on a Papillion.

After eight weeks of CBD oil treatment (which the researchers mixed in with organic coconut oil), the Labrador and Chihuahua’s owners reported that the number of seizures their dogs experienced had decreased and their dogs seemed more settled or calm. Both dogs also experience other improvements, like less aggression or banking.

RELATED: Dogs With Epilepsy: Can CBD Oil Help?

The Papillion, though, didn’t experience a major decrease in seizures, despite it seeming more settled and sleeping more during the day.

The researchers who looked at how CBD may help with these seizures work at the Yamazaki University of Animal Health Technology in Japan. It’s important to note that the study was done on a small sample size — just three dogs — and so can’t be applied widely to all animals or even all dogs. It’s more important because it gives both pet owners and other researchers an initial indicator that CBD may be helpful for some other mammals in the same way it helps humans.

5 Ways To Contribute To Healthcare Workers

0

Healthcare workers have been deeply affected by the coronavirus. Here’s how you can help.

The coronavirus has affected all of us, but there’s no doubt that health workers have received the blunt of the impact. These people have been working grueling hours and have endured terrible amounts of stress. In New York only, more than 900 public hospital employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

Here are some simple ways to help them and offer support during the pandemic:

Follow your state’s rules

The strongest measure we can take to help healthcare workers is to stay home and not overwhelm hospitals and clinics. If you have to leave your home, be sure to follow social distancing guidelines, avoid cluttered spaces (even if they’re outdoors), and follow your state’s guidelines. For example, if you live in New York, be sure to wear masks when outside, even if you’re going for a run.

Donate equipment if you have it

Ever since the coronavirus appeared, hospitals have reported shortages on masks, gowns and all sorts of medical equipment. If you happen to have a surplus, donate it to hospitals in need. You can also donate money to PPE (personal protective equipment) fundraisers through sites like Fundly and GoFundMe.

Help make masks for hospital workers

People who can sew or know their way around a 3D printer have been getting creative with face masks and coverings, donating these to hospitals that need the help. While cloth masks aren’t as effective as N95 masks, they’re better than nothing and have been found to lower the spread of COVID-19. Facebook is a good place to find groups and organizers that are requesting these items and that can connect you with workers in need.

Donate blood

RELATED: Can You Donate Blood For Coronavirus If You Consume Marijuana?

Due to social distancing guidelines the U.S. is in dire needs of blood donations, which is why the FDA has loosened up some of its restrictions, even if for some reason gay men still can’t donate. In order to give blood, give a call to 1-800-RED-CROSS and ask for your nearest center. You can also visit the Red Cross website which provides all the necessary information.

Don’t hoard supplies

One way to help everyone right now is to be mindful with your purchases. Although you should take advantage of delivery services, don’t crowd them. Don’t hoard supplies, medicines or foods, especially those products that are in high demand. Buy a reasonable amount of toilet paper and don’t take hand sanitizers or other cleaning supplies from hospitals or grocery store staff. The reason these items are in short supply is because people see others stockpiling and do the same…and the vicious cycle repeats itself. The country is not going to run out of toilet paper. We’re just not.

Does Lana Del Rey Consume Weed

Del Rey sings a lot about getting high, so the question becomes: has anyone actually seen her consume weed in public?

She is one of the more strange popstars. Unlike her contemporaries with broad appeal, like Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, Del Rey’s audience is more niche. Her music tends to be moody and her albums don’t have the required pop dance anthems. She’s polarizing in the sense that she has rabid fans and people who just don’t care at all what she’s doing. There’s not much of a middle ground. But, does Lana Del Rey consume weed?

RELATED: Does Jeff Bezos Smoke Weed?

The answer is an obvious yes. Del Rey sings a lot about getting high — she has a song called “High by the Beach” — so this column isn’t questioning whether she does it or not. We’re focusing more on whether anyone has actually seen it.

Unlike Ariana Grande or Miley Cyrus whose fanbases are made up of a lot of young girls (Miley’s fans should’ve aged up; Hannah Montana was years ago), Del Rey inhabits a space that allows her to be more open. She’s one of those singers whose music embodies a mood and a personality, someone who can sing about sex with nobody batting an eye. Seeing her smoke a joint at a show wouldn’t spark outrage, it’d be kind of fitting.

RELATED: Do Grimes & Elon Musk Smoke Weed?

Luckily, Del Rey kind of doesn’t care much about her image. There’s that time where she went to the Grammys in a dress she bought at the mall and there’s also this gem of a photo.

To be fair, what they’re smoking might be a cigarette, but we choose to believe it’s a joint.
