Are There Too Many Hurdles In Marijuana To Make Money?

Marijuana companies have many battles towards profitability, causing investors to sour on cannabis stocks.

Making money in the marijuana industry isn’t easy. Due to the plant’s federally illegal status, it prohibits cannabis companies from accessing many financial services available to other entrepreneurs. Failure is not an option, as bankruptcy or short-term loans aren’t accessible in many cases. Instead, companies have relied on capital infusions from investors to grow in the market.

Legal marijuana retailers must also battle with black market producers, who can undercut prices and introduce stronger products not available under state laws. According to an analysis of the California cannabis market, illegal sellers outnumber regulated businesses 3-to-1. That’s a staggeringly fierce amount of competition, especially when those producers can undercut prices, in part, because they don’t have to pay exorbitant tax prices like those seen in California.

Don’t forget that new cannabis markets contend with legislative restrictions, too. In Florida, the legislature acted childishly after voters legalized medical marijuana in the state by banning smokable flower. The issue dragged on for over a year, with lawmakers dragging their heels all the way to court until new Governor Ron DeSantis entered office and demanded they lift the ban. At the end of last year, once the law against smokable flower was repealed, operators flooded in trying to capitalize on the suddenly lucrative market.

Meanwhile, in Canada, provincial regulations have inhibited producers from establishing a sizable retail footprint, as well as meeting consumer demands so far. Add in overhyped valuations that underdelivered and you start to understand why investors have soured on marijuana stocks. Less than 10% of cannabis companies could be considered profitable.

As Barron’s noted, cannabis stocks continue to fall. Canopy Growth, Aurora Cannabis, Tilray, Cronos, and more slipped this week. Oppenheimer analyst Rupesh Parikh believes these struggles will only continue. Stability just isn’t present in the cannabis industry, with CEOs dropping like flies at major players and significant turnover across the C-Suite executive level.

It’ll be important over the next several months for major companies to establish momentum and prepare for possible regulatory headwinds. Otherwise, we might see cannabis stocks fall further out of favor with investors.

Did Joe Biden Accidentally Endorse Marijuana Legalization?

In newly released audio, Joe Biden states that marijuana is not a “gateway” drug and it has to be “basically, legalized.”

Poor Joe Biden. The former Vice President, who was dragged into the 2020 election as the old-school Democratic party’s savior, can’t seem to stick to his script. Recent moves won’t allow Biden to gain any political momentum, and that now includes his back-and-forth recent statements on marijuana legalization.

Though the majority of Democratic candidates support marijuana legalization — Bernie Sanders say he’ll legalize cannabis his first day in office — Joe Biden believes cannabis should remain an “illegal misdemeanor” until more research is available. However, at a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire, Biden appeared to reverse his tune.

“I think It is at the point where it has to be, basically, legalized,” Biden states in an audio recording obtained by Politico.

The conversation started when Biden was approached by Marijuana Policy Project’s Don Murphy. Murphy asked Biden about his “hawkish” cannabis policy, and the former Vice President restated his cannabis policy—that marijuana should be decriminalized and medical cannabis made available to patients, as well as plan to expand research into the plant.

RELATED: Poll: Democrats In Favor Of Marijuana Legalization More Than Ever

He re-iterated twice, according to Politico, that marijuana is not a “gateway” drug.

“But I’m not prepared to do it as long as there [are] serious medical people saying we should determine what other side effects would occur,” Biden says.

He also added that he wants the Center for Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) involved in the process. Biden’s campaign emphasized that he was merely re-stating his cannabis policy, although they did not respond to questions about what Biden meant when he suggested that marijuana “has to be, basically, legalized.”

It remains open to interpretation if this represents an evolution of Biden’s approach to marijuana. Following the less-than-desired results in the Iowa Caucus for Biden, it could represent a further shift to the left to appeal to the new realities of the Democratic Party. Or, as has happened in the past, it could just be another moment where Biden went off script and it causes him to lose possible momentum.

“Joe Biden has only recently evolved his position on marijuana policy,” Violet Cavendish, MPP’s communications manager, wrote in an email to Reason. “He may hold a more progressive view on marijuana reform now than he has in the past, but his position still remains far behind nearly all of the other presidential candidates and it comes with a caveat: He’s indicated that he won’t move forward with legalization without scientific research to back his case.”

How To Quickly Sober Up From A High

In order to prevent a bad high, it’s important to try to control some of the outside factors that can produce them. But if you find yourself in one, here’s how to come down quickly.

Bad highs are part of life, but that doesn’t make them suck any less. These intense highs can make us feel paranoid and like we’re not in control of our bodies, especially when we’re with people who we aren’t comfortable with in these kinds of scenarios, such as parents or coworkers.

While sometimes a bad high occurs because our bodies were feeling great to begin with, or we smoked a strain that isn’t doing it for us, in order to prevent one, it’s important to try to control some of the outside factors that can produce them.

If you’re not experienced with these situations, avoid smoking before work or going to the gym. Avoid smoking when you’re meeting up with your parents or with some other authority figure. This list varies depending on the person, but the message remains the same: by minimizing outside factors you’ll be minimizing opportunities for bad highs.

Here are 5 tricks that can help you come down from a high quickly:

Taking a shower

If you’re at your house or at a friend’s you can try taking a quick shower. This can make you feel relaxed and provide some much needed perspective. Take a few deep breaths and put on some fresh clothes. You might still be high, but you’ll give yourself some space to calm down.

This strange bit of advice is beloved one by many stoners. According to them, the simple act of sniffing peppercorns can provide instant relief for your bad high. Chewing on them makes the effect even stronger. The website Clear Choice says that this relief is due to the fact that peppercorns have a specific terpene that reduces anxiety.

Take a nap

If you have time for a quick nap, do it. This is the easiest way to relax yourself and to completely change your mindset. A half hour nap can help you let go of your anxiety and make you feel rested. Besides, marijuana highs, at least when smoked, tend to last for short periods of time. A nap is one of the easiest ways to make the time go by faster and for you to get used to the high.

Drinking water

One of the most common side effects of a bad high is dry mouth. Drink some water in order to avoid this and to also give yourself something simple to focus on, which is drinking and swallowing. Avoid alcohol or drinks with caffeine since these will only make you feel more altered.

Eating a delicious meal

One of the best ways to burn all of that high energy is to eat something delicious. Food is always great while high and eating is also one of the simplest ways to keep yourself distracted. If you’re feeling paranoid and anxious, try ordering in some food or going on a walk and buying something to eat. You can also try cooking, but that might be a tall order for your mental state.

5 Common Myths Surrounding Hemp And CBD Oils

Despite their popularity, CBD and hemp oils are products that are shrouded in misinformation.

The business of CBD and hemp oil has grown rapidly, despite the fact that many people get the two mixed up or aren’t super clear about their effects. Despite the popularity that these products have amassed, there’s a lot of misinformation surrounding the CBD and hemp oil industry.

In order to get a better picture of things, we looked into some of the most common myths that surround these products and found different sources that debunked them. Here are 5 common myths about CBD and hemp oils:

CBD oil and hemp oil are the same thing

For starters, CBD oil and hemp oil aren’t the same. Full spectrum hemp oil is extracted from the whole hemp plant, meaning that it contains small amounts of different cannabinoids present within the cannabis plant (THC, CBD, and more). CBD oil is an isolate of cannabidiol, containing only that compound.

Since hemp oils contain trace amounts of THC, some people might think that they’d produce a high. They don’t. Most hemp oils contain less than 0.3% THC, which is not enough to get anyone high. Also, all CBD and hemp oil products must contain less than 0.3% of THC in order to remain legal.

So, you might feel relaxed and stress-free when using these products, but you won’t be high.

CBD oil can cure anything

CBD oil has become so prevalent that it’s now being touted as some sort of miracle drug that can cure all ailments. This isn’t true. Although CBD oil and products hold much promise over a variety of medical conditions, more research and medical testing is necessary in order to get a clearer picture. For the time being, despite all the therapeutic effects of the compound there’s not enough information out there that allows us to treat CBD as medicine on its own.

Data on this topic is complex. While most CBD products shouldn’t trigger positives on drug tests, there have been cases where this has occurred. Healthline says that one explanation for this is the fact that CBD continues to be unregulated by the FDA, meaning that there’s no way of knowing what’s in these products. To minimize this risk, read the label of your CBD product and do the necessary research; since the industry is in a state of flux, it pays to be careful and thorough.

Hemp oil is medical marijuana

CBD hemp oils have nothing to do with medical marijuana. These are made from the hemp plant, which is a different species than the marijuana plant that’s used for medicinal purposes. Unlike medical marijuana, hemp oils are legal in the entire country as long as the products meet a specific set of guidelines.

Can CBD Be Used To Treat ADHD Symptoms?

CBD can alleviate anxiety symptoms and help motivate users, suggesting a possible link to helping those with ADHD.

In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the estimated amount of U.S. children (ages 2-17) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is 6.1 million. That’s 9.4% of kids. But according to the National Institute of Mental Health, the prevalence of ADHD in adults is closer to 4.4.%.

That’s still a significant amount of the population. After reading a 2016 review, which found that “CBD may attenuate motivational dysfunction,” we wondered what effect CBD could have on ADHD symptoms. The review noted CBD was especially effective “in disorders of motivation, including drug addiction, anxiety, and depression,” leaving out any mention of ADHD.

One promising 2012 paper detailed an investigation into how CBD could be used to manage hyperactivity and social interaction in rats with “reduced social investigative behavior, hyperactivity, as well as reduced attention span.” In the study, those rats given CBD were “normalized” based on the scientific analysis.

Unfortunately, studies into how CBD could treat ADHD in humans are few and far between. One study published in 2016 sought to understand the relationship between marijuana use and disruptive behavior disorders. These included mental disorders like ADHD, conduct disorder, and depressive symptoms. While researchers found that college students used marijuana to cope with depressive symptoms, particularly those with ADHD, it didn’t give any indication on how CBD could impact ADHD.

Because marijuana use can inhibit attention and motor function in some users, some scientists believe those diagnosed with ADHD would worsen their symptoms after using cannabis. A 2017 paper from Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute discovered evidence linking ADHD with developing cannabis use disorder. However, there’s little to no evidence that supports or refutes claims that marijuana would worsen ADHD symptoms.

At this point, much of what we understand regarding CBD’s impact on ADHD remains anecdotal. It’s worth adding that CBD can alleviate anxiety, which could give some with ADHD a clear mind to focus. For now, more research is necessary to definitively claim just how CBD could affect ADHD either way.

AAA Says Legal Marijuana Leads Crashes

AAA found that fatal crashes involving THC-positive drivers doubled after Washington legalized marijuana, causing them to oppose recreational legalization.

More than two-thirds of Americans support marijuana legalization, according to the latest polling data from the Pew Research Center. Just don’t count the American Automobile Association (AAA) among them.

“AAA opposes the legalization of marijuana for recreational use because of its inherent traffic safety risks and because of the difficulties in writing legislation that protects the public and treats drivers fairly,” the organization announced in a statement.

New research conducted by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found the percentage of fatal crashes involving drivers who tested positive for cannabis have doubled in Washington since the state legalized recreational marijuana. Between 2008 and 2012, the yearly average of drivers who had detectable levels of THC in their system involved in fatal crashes was 56. From 2013 to 2017, the number jumped to 130 drivers.

AAA is now concerned that legalizing recreational marijuana leads to more dangerous and deadly drivers on the road. However, AAA officials did say their study only demonstrated a correlation, not a causation. Over the course of the 10-year study, the number of fatalities on the road overall decreased.

“Results from the analysis suggest that legalization of recreational use of marijuana may increase the rate of THC-positive drivers involved in fatal crashes,” Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said in a statement.

The study used 10 years of Washington state traffic data. Numbers reported by AAA are similar to those found by the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission. Region 11 Target Zero Manager Doug Dahl says the study’s findings confirm that cannabis use negatively affects driving, but adds that other studies demonstrate that when drivers have a 0.08 blood-alcohol level or above, it raises crash risks fourfold or more.

RELATED: Is A Cannabis DUI Really The Same As Drunk Driving?

“Even more concerning … in many of our THC-positive fatal crashes the driver is also positive for alcohol, and that crash risk is much higher than the risk of impairment of a single substance — as high as 17 times more likely,” Dahl wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald. “Impairment is the No. 1 cause of fatal crashes in Washington, and poly-drug use is now the most prevalent form of impairment.”

Last year, AAA released a different study that reported 15 million American had got behind the wheel of car after consuming marijuana in the past 30 days. In addition, the organization found that 70% of Americans believe it’s “unlikely” police will pull them over for driving under the influence of cannabis.

What Is CBG And Why Is Everyone Comparing It To CBD?

Despite sharing some similarities with CBD, researchers think CBG can treat other conditions and produce more powerful results than the super famous cannabinoid.

We’re only starting to learn about the dozens of cannabinoids that exist within cannabis, with each one displaying a different set of effects. While these elements haven’t been as researched and monetized as CBD or THC, they’re still worth mentioning, especially since we’re learning more about them and noticing that their effects can be just as strong and impressive.

When it comes to wellness and health, many cannabis experts believe CBG is the next element that you should be on the lookout for.

RELATED: What You Need To Know About The Healing Benefits Of Marijuana’s CBG

Like CBD, cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive compound. Despite not having yet been used in clinical trials, research suggests that CBG can decrease anxiety and depression without producing highs. In addition to treating these conditions, studies where CBG was used on rats show that the compound can treat illnesses like IBS, Chron’s disease, cancer and glaucoma, setting it apart from the effects that are normally associated with CBD.

Dr. Perry Salomon, medical cannabis expert and anesthesiologist, explained to Shape magazine that despite the fact that CBG is relatively unknown, it’s referred to by experts as the stem cell of cannabis. “CBGA (the acidic, inactive form of CBG) changes, is broken down, and becomes the base molecule that other cannabinoids form from,” he said.

RELATED: 5 Of The Most Promising Cannabinoids For 2020

Since CBG shares some DNA with CBD, it’s likely that there is some overlap between their effects, including counteracting some of the powerful side effects of THC. “Studies of CBG seem to show that it activates the CB1 receptor just as CBD does, which essentially decreases psycho-activation,” says Salomon.

While more research is needed to understand CBG in its entirety, it’s great news that other cannabinoids are stepping in and showing off a different set of abilities that the ones that are known by most researchers and users. Instead of canonizing CBD, we should all try to focus on different elements of the cannabis plant that could provide relief for dozens of symptoms and diseases.

CBD Craze Sparks ‘Weed Washing’ Trend

“Weed washing” refers to the act of adding hemp oil, mostly to beauty products, just to capitalize on the CBD hype.

Remember the term ‘pinkwashing’? Where companies slapped a pink ribbon on just about anything and claimed to be donating lots of money to breast cancer research? It’s happening again, but this time it’s in the cannabis industry.

“Weed washing” is a disturbing trend that appears to be most dominant in the beauty industry and refers to the act of adding hemp oil that does not contain CBD or only contains a minuscule, non-therapeutic amount to a product in order to capitalize on CBD’s popularity and high price point. So what is the key difference between the properties of hemp seed oil and hemp oil that contains CBD? Hemp seed oil, which has been compared to jojoba or rosehip seed oil (known for their nourishing and anti-inflammatory properties), is derived from hemp seeds (which contain 0% THC), typically through cold-pressing. CBD oil is derived from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant and commonly derived through CO2 or ethanol extraction.

Claire McCormack, reporting for Beauty Independent, found that many beauty brands use the combination of incorporating hemp seed oil as an ingredient, cannabis leaf imagery on the label, and buzzwords like “calm”, “de-stress”, and “blissed out” to lure customers with the false promise of CBD. Weed washed products by such big-name brands as Sephora, Origins, and The Body Shop are all called out in McCormack’s piece for deliberately misrepresenting the CBD content (or lack thereof) in their new skincare lines.

Due to what health information site Healthline calls “the green rush” (referring to the entrepreneurial eagerness to jump on the CBD bandwagon), customers are more vulnerable to wasting their money on weed washed, non-therapeutic products than ever before. Teadora, a vendor of natural and organic skincare products using ingredients sustainably sourced from the Brazilian Amazon, offers a set of guidelines to avoid being “weed washed”.

Their simple steps for knowing what to look for when scanning the labels of products that feature CBD as an ingredient include: ensuring that the ingredient is listed as “full-spectrum hemp”, “cannabinoid” or “cannabidiol” rather than simply “hemp oil”; looking for at least 50 mg of CBD in the product for anti-inflammatory properties, 100 mg for anti-aging properties, at least 200mg for pain relief; and knowing your source.

RELATED: 10 Mainstream Businesses Betting On CBD

These guidelines emphasize the larger point that even if beauty products do contain CBD, the concentration may not be high enough to provide any therapeutic effect. This could drive consumers away from CBD-enhanced products if they feel they are not seeing benefits that warrant the higher price tag, cutting this growing market short before it has a chance to fully mature.

While consumers and producers wait on more definitive federal guidelines regarding the manufacturing and marketing of beauty products that claim the healing benefits of CBD, weed washing remains rife within the industry and the need for comprehensive consumer education more pressing than ever.

High Protein Diets May Hurt Your Heart

Researchers found high-protein foods heightened the amino acids in the body and seemed to have a direct effect on a rise in cholesterol.

New research just unveiled what many nutrition experts have been telling clients for the past few years: High-protein diets may actually harm your body and shorten your life.

The study, published in 2020 by The Lancet, showcases a higher risk for cardiovascular events and diseases for those who eat a  high-protein diet, rich in animal tissue. Uncovered in the study, high sulfur amino acids are getting the blame for stress on the heart.

While the body needs amino acids to keep it running smoothly, they found high-protein foods heightened the amino acids in the body and seemed to have a direct effect on a rise in cholesterol.

“Overall, our findings suggest that diets lower in SAA (sulfur amino acids) are associated with reduced risk for cardiometabolic diseases. Low SAA dietary patterns rely on plant-derived protein sources over meat derived foods. Given the high intake of SAA among most adults, our findings may have important public health implications for chronic disease prevention.”

Understanding sulfur amino acids

The U.S. National Library of Medicine defines sulfur amino acids as this: “Methionine, cysteine, homocysteine, and taurine are the 4 common sulfur-containing amino acids, but only the first 2 are incorporated into proteins.” Keeping a diet low in methionine and cysteine could be as easy as keeping a list of which foods contain these sulfur amino acids.

  • Tofu
  • Milk
  • Ricotta Cheese

  • Chickpeas
  • Eggs
  • Lentils
  • Oats

  • Walnuts

Eat this, not that

“There is significant study that shows that animal protein has a negative impact on heart health. If one wants to do a ketogenic diet, I strongly recommend a vegetarian keto approach,” explained Heather Sand, certified nutritionist and personal trainer in Minnesota.

Foods like nut butters, low-carb fruits, and leafy non-starchy vegetables, such as kale and broccoli, are all a great place to incorporate keto-friendly, vegetarian options onto your plate and into your lifestyle. Avoid foods like meat and potatoes, red beans, sauces and grain cereals.

Sand believes starting children early on healthy diets can help them choose healthier foods as adults. “My fridge is always stocked with dark berries,” Sand mentioned. “I always keep kale on-hand for salads or to dehydrate with salt and pepper for chips. The kids actually beg for them!”

The Relationship Between CBD And Owning Pets Is Deeper Than You Think

0

The CBD pet market has exploded in recent years and will only continue to do so.

Most pet owners can’t help but treat their furry friends to the same perks they give themselves. Whether you’re a dog or cat person, plenty of folks share their bed, food, Instagram, plane seat, and more with their animal friends. In fact, they do so gladly.

This might explain the relationship between CBD and owning pets is deeper than you think. According to research conducted by BDS Analytics and Arcview Market Research, the CBD pet market is expected to grow 5% faster than the overall CBD market over the next four years. Data trends predict the CBD market will rise from $1.8 billion in 2019 to $20 billion in 2024, a 48% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). In that same time frame, the pet CBD market will increase from $64 million to $810 million, a 53% CAGR.

The connection to CBD and owning pets might run deeper than you think. For example, 74% of CBD users own pets, according to research from Headset Analytics and Nielsen. Furthermore, 24% of pet owners use CBD products for themselves, their pets, or both. About a quarter of American adults with dogs use hemp-CBD products — half of them use it just for their dogs, half use it just for themselves.

“Understanding the dynamics at play in the cannabis space and their impact on the pet industry is critical,” Maria Lange, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Nielsen, said in a statement. “Despite open questions around regulations, hemp-CBD is exploding in the pet space.”

Latest polling data from Gallup poll states that 1 in 7 Americans use CBD products. All of which means we should add CBD products as just another things humans can’t help sharing with their pets.
