Bella Thorne Parodies Elon Musk Weed-Smoking

As her fame continues to skyrocket, Bella Thorne hasn’t hidden her love of cannabis from the world. Instead she’s embraced it, acting in a Lowell Herb Co. commercial that features the celebrity puffing from a joint. (The ad was later rejected to air during the Oscars by ABC.). Talented, beautiful and funny, Bella Thorne parodies Elon Musk weed-smoking to perfection!

So it isn’t surprising that when Thorne sat down to record an episode for YouTuber Logan Paul’s podcast, the topic of cannabis came up. Wouldn’t it be funny, Paul asked, if Thorne re-created the iconic meme of Elon Musk smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast? Not an easy task, but Thorne was up for the challenge.

The crew dissects the original Musk photo to nail all the nuances of Musk’s idiosyncratic expression. After a few tries, Thorne reprises the moment well, mimicking Musk’s raised eyebrow and laconic visage quite memorably.

Logan Paul  is an American social media personality, actor, boxer, and professional wrestler. He is was signed to WWE, where he performed on a part-time basis. He has over 23 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, and has ranked on the Forbes list for the highest paid YouTube creators in 2017 and 2018. Paul has also run the Impaulsive podcast since November 2018, which has over 4 million YouTube subscribers.

Study Focused On Marijuana And Weight Loss

If there is one aspect of marijuana that most people seem to agree on, it is that food always seems to taste better when we’re high. Anyone who has ever used the herb understands that it comes with a delightful little side effect called the munchies, which has a way of making even the weirdest cuisine wildly appealing. If we’re being honest, this spawns a lot of fun for us in our early years. Getting high and then showing up at the front door of a Golden Corral to tear their buffet to pieces is nothing short of legendary. But as we get older, our metabolism starts to slow down, and it isn’t long before we see our girlish figures and strong, chiseled features begin to go soft.

But one doesn’t need to be a marijuana user to experience, first hand, the struggle of living in this fast food nation known as the United States. Considering that last year Americans spent as much on Taco Bell as they did on marijuana, it’s plain to see that being fat in this part of the world is just easier.

Still, it might not have to be this way.

There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating how marijuana might actually help defend our bodies against excessive weight gain. Believe it or not, these studies have shown that regular cannabis users often have a lower BMI, smaller waists and lower fasting insulin levels – all of the makings of weight loss.

No, this isn’t more pro-pot propaganda.

There is enough buzz surrounding this phenomenon that the federal government has decided to cough up nearly $2 million to learn more about how weed might help solve the national weight problem. A branch of the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases) recently awarded the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine a five-year grant to “identify novel gut-brain endocannabinoid signaling pathways that control feeding behavior and become impaired in obesity.” In other words, Uncle Sam is interested in finding out how cannabis might keep Americans from supersizing themselves to death.

“Our work, which will be done on a mouse model, will support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic strategies to safely treat obesity and related metabolic disorders,” Nicholas DiPatrizio, an assistant professor of biomedical sciences at UCR, said in an emailed statement. “Currently, a critical barrier to effective treatment of obesity is a lack of reliable therapeutic options.”

Nearly two-thirds of the population is either overweight or suffering from full-blown obesity because of their savage love affair with what is referred to as a “Western Diet.” This is a nutritional scheme typically characterized by high intakes of red meat, fried foods, eggs and potatoes – all of the fare that most Americans enjoy regularly.

But is there really something to the idea that marijuana might be able to counter a less than healthy diet?

Well, one of the latest studies on the subject, one conducted by Michigan State University, shows that cannabis users are more likely to maintain a healthy weight than non-users. There wasn’t a significant difference –  around 5 percent – but there was definitely something there showing how cannabinoids play a role in keeping us trim.

RELATED: How To Control The Marijuana Munchies

Furthermore, one of our journalists wrote last year about how marijuana helped them lose 50 pounds. While impressive, no doubt, the article also stated that such a significant loss couldn’t have been accomplished without proper diet and exercise.

On the flipside, cannabis has been known to assist in weight gain.

Studies have shown that marijuana’s effect as an appetite stimulant (munchies) can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, like cancer and AIDS wasting syndrome, keep weight on as opposed to losing it.

Finding the balance in the weight gain vs. loss elements of cannabinoids is what researchers hope to learn more about in the next several years.

“What are the specific components in the Western diet that at the molecular level impact gut-brain endocannabinoid system signaling and diet-induced obesity?” DiPatrizio said. “We will work to identify these components.”

Jessica Simpson Is Releasing A Memoir; Oprah Recalls The Kind Gesture From A Stranger She’ll “Take To My Grave”

Jessica Simpson is releasing a memoir!

Via Seriously OMG:

The singer announced that she is releasing a memoir in February with Harper Collins. She says, “I have been working so hard on it – I have opened my heart up in a way I never have before and I can’t wait to share it with you ?.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzvFhKdADCR/

What can we expect from her untitled book? The publisher describes it as, “From her popular television show Newlyweds, to a very public divorce, starring on the big screen and topping the Billboard charts, finding new love, raising a family, and running a successful business empire, her new book will be a candid, inspiring, and behind-the-scenes look at how she chose to learn from each difficult moment, evolve musically, become a more fearless businesswoman, and consistently shatter all expectations of who she was ‘supposed’ to be.”

Oprah Recalls the Kindness “I’ll Take to My Grave”

In the new issue of O Magazine, Oprah reflects on the kindness of a stranger who helped her through the toughest days of her 1998 trial where she was sued by the beef industry for saying “It has stopped me cold from eating another burger.”

Oprah on the kind act from a stranger during the trial that “I’ll take to my grave” and how she pays it forward 20 years later:

“Every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., I was in the courtroom. A fence separated the back of the courthouse from the sidewalk, and one morning through that fence a woman handed me a matchbook, the kind they used to give out at restaurants when people smoked. Inside she’d written, “Hang in there. I’m praying for you.” Recalling that moment still makes me teary. I never learned her name or saw her again. But she did me a kindness I’ll take to my grave. I was feeling alone, feeling under daily attack by the prosecution. The trial was a spectacle, and it seemed like so many people were rooting against me. I took it personally—although now, with the help of time and perspective, I see that that’s what a trial is meant to do: The other side wants you to lose and works hard to make that happen. That matchbook inscription was a balm. The whole town wasn’t against me. At least one person was praying for me. Maybe more. Because of that pure act of kindness over 20 years ago, I am more conscious of people who are caught up in public scandals. I’ve quietly sent notes or made a phone call to say, in my own way, “Hang in there. I’m praying for you.”

What Are The Health Risks Of Not Washing Your Jeans

Jeans are amazing when it comes to hiding dirt, making washing them a decision that can be postponed indefinitely. While some people choose to wash their jeans regularly along with the rest of their clothes, others wait until there’s some smudge on them in order to get them inside the washing machine. Levi’s CEO Chip Burgh controversially stated that jeans should never be washed, since this affects the quality of the fabric.

RELATED: 5 Ways To Take Better Care Of Your Jeans

But is there an actual health risk to never washing your jeans? Will your skin get some sort of rash and will you walk around all smelly through life? These are complex questions since people have strong beliefs when it comes to their laundry habits and cleanliness.

Men’s Health conducted a survey, asking how often people washed their jeans. While a few said that they washed them after one wear (public transportation being a big concern for them), most participants tended to wear their jeans between 5 to 10 times before deciding to wash them. The survey shows that people really don’t like to wash their jeans, which is a little gross but also perfectly fine.

Dr. Steve Xhu told Men’s Health that the odds of contracting some infection or rash due to wearing dirty jeans is very low. “The skin is a pretty good barrier against infections,” he said. Exceptions are more likely to occur if people have skin conditions, eczema or athlete’s foot. In the case of the latter, putting jeans on without wearing socks could lead to contracting a rash or infection in the groin. If the jeans aren’t washed and continue to be worn, the fungus and bacteria in them could continue to grow and lead to some trouble.

If you’re sort of healthy and have no skin conditions, you may as well follow Burgh’s advice and lead a dirty jeans life. If there’s a smudge or something gross on them, just give them a hand wash.

Jay Z Joins The Weed Business With A Focus On Social Justice

On the underground classic “U Don’t Know,” Jay-Z raps, “I sell ice in the winter, I sell fire in hell / I am a hustler, baby, I’ll sell water to a whale.” Now, he’ll have to sell marijuana in one of the most oversaturated states in the cannabis market. Because this week, it was announced that Jay-Z was joining the California-based Caliva as chief brand strategist.

Though financial details were not disclosed, Jay-Z will oversee outreach strategies and creative decisions at the company. He’ll also focus his attention on the social justice issues surrounding marijuana legalization, including the “economic participation of citizens returning from incarceration—many of who are not seeing the monetary benefits of legalization—through advocacy, job training, and overall employee and workforce development,” Caliva said in a statement.

Jay-Z had been eyeing the cannabis industry for some time, and eventually approached Caliva after extensively surveying numerous business for a possible partner.

“Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level,” Jay-Z said. “With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos makes them the best partner for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good and bring people along the way.”

Caliva sells its marijuana products, like joints and vape pens, at more than 200 dispensaries throughout the state of California. The privately-owned company also operates a retail store in San Jose and a delivery service in the Bay Area.

“For Jay-Z to seek out Caliva as a partner is humbling and confirms our mission of being the most trusted name in cannabis,” Caliva CEO Dennis O’Malley said. “To find that we were in complete alignment around our values and ethos was just a home run. We believe this partnership is unparalleled in this or any business and we could not be more pleased to be working with him and have him as our Chief Brand Strategist.”

This isn’t the first big-name celebrity partnership Caliva has had this year. Back in January, quarterback legend Joe Montana and his venture firm invested $75 million in the company. Montana said at the time he wanted to invest in an industry that “can provide relief to many people and can make a serious impact on opioid use or addiction.”

Did Kate Middleton Throw Shade At Christening

The British Royal Family are beloved and bewitched globally and people really focus on every detail.  Now the question is did Kate Middleton throw shade at christening. After photos were posted of baby Archie’s christening over the weekend, some people took issue with the earrings Kate Middleton was wearing to the ceremony.

As Cosmopolitan points out, the Duchess of Cambridge chose a pair of pearl drop earrings that Princess Diana wore to Prince Harry’s christening back in 1984 as an homage to her late mother-in-law. But since Princess Di is also Meghan’s MIL, some people think Kate was trying to upstage the Duchess of Sussex.

Others who are obviously on TEAM KATE pointed out that Meghan didn’t exactly blend in at Prince Louis’s christening.

And who knows? Maybe Kate offered the earrings to Meghan and she turned them down? Let’s all come down, people. Everyone loves a royal feud, but this is turning into some Dateline: Real Life Mysteries nonsense.

Royal babies being christened traditionally wear the same christening gown worn by a number of royals before them. The child’s godparents are usually announced as well – Harry and Meghan famously broke with tradition at Archie’s when they kept the names private.

Additionally, royal tradition dictates that water from the River Jordan be used for the occasion, as this is where Jesus was baptized in the Bible.

VIDEO: Does Marijuana Make You Smarter?

Earlier this year, Comedy Central launched a new YouTube channel for some of its more experimental and sillier content. If it was meant to be consumed on the internet, why not just post it on the internet?

One of our favorite shows from the channel is called “Worst Fears Confirmed.” The program features host Natasha Vaynblat as she shoots you far down the rabbit hole of your strangest, most idiosyncratic fears before teasing out all the ways in which your greatest fear can become reality, in increasingly nonsensical and hilarious ways.

The most recent episode covers something all of our readers should be interested in: “Does weed make you smarter?” To which Vaynblat replies, “100%,” as it allows you to send THC, or “Tender Lovin’ Kush” in Vaynblat’s definition, to your brain. The “Tender Lovin’ Kush” then makes it possible for you to focus on those ideas only possible in your mind while inebriated. We won’t spoil the joke, but let’s just say it involves you somehow revolutionizing mousetrap technology and becoming a millionaire as a result.

The whole video is well worth your time, trust us. You can watch it in full below.

Car Catches Fire On Dangerous Gender Reveal Party

Have Gender Reveal parties gotten WAY out of hand?

With alligator brawls, plenty of injuries and setting half of Arizona on fire, it’s fitting that the next crazy gender reveal accident would result in a car catching fire.

A 30-year0old man from Queensland, Australia, was responsible for the incident, earning a fine of $1,000 and having his license revoked for six months. The gender reveal video was captured by a drone, which made the rounds through the police and later, the news.

It’s hilariously awful.

Everything appears to be going well for the first minute of the video, with the car releasing copious amount of blue smoke once the driver completes the burnout – for those who don’t know, burnout is that dangerous process where you spin your car’s wheels until they produce smoke. The blue smoke lets everyone know that the baby is a boy. Woohoo. A couple of seconds later, things take a turn for the worse, with the back wheels of the car catching fire and the blue smoke being replaced with your average black smoke.

Luckily, there were several spectators nearby who alerted the driver and helped him leave the car unharmed.

Don’t do burnouts because they’re very dangerous. Also, someone please save us from gender reveals. They suck!

5 Videos Of Cute Animals To Get You Through This Week: July 8

There’s no better pick-me-up than the one you get when you see a clip of an animal acting silly, which is why we’ve compiled this weekly column. These short videos feature all sorts of animals, providing you with that much needed rush of endorphins.

This week’s column features two raccoons, a puppy learning how to walk, two lynxes kissing, and a Frenchie taking a ride on a cart.

Cats are beautiful and very in touch with their wild side, something that’s a little dangerous because it makes us want to pet other felines who act and look like cats. While lynxes aren’t as big as tigers, they grow into formidable and beautiful creatures that should be handled by experts.

This tiny Frenchie, amazingly called French Milkshake, is able to fit neatly and comfortably in that cart, being strolled around like royalty through the house. His Instagram is wholesome and adorable, making for great content for people with some sort of interest in pets.

California To Pass A Landmark Hemp CBD Law

California is on the brink of legalizing hemp-derived cannabidiol (“Hemp CBD”) in many products—well, sort of. The law at issue is Assembly Bill 228 (“AB-228”), and I’ve been writing about it since it was introduced in January 2019 (for my posts on it, see herehere, and here). As of today, it’s made its way through the California Assembly and most of the way through the California Senate with very little resistance. AB-228 is likely to pass soon, and because it is what’s called an “urgency” statute, will become immediately effective.

Since I started writing about AB-228, the bill has morphed a lot, and now actually has some teeth. Even if it passes though, Hemp CBD may not be completely legal in the Golden State. Here’s a brief explanation of what’s happened, and what’s at stake.

About a year ago, the California Department of Public Health’s (“CDPH”) released its now-infamous Hemp CBD FAQs, which take the position that Hemp CBD is illegal in basically all foods, beverages, and some other products (but note, there is not a single law or regulation on the books anywhere in the state that takes this position). The FAQs “outlawed” Hemp CBD based on the federal Controlled Substances Act (which as of December 20, 2018 and the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill no longer hemp illegal) and the fact that the federal Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) did not allow the addition of Hemp CBD to the same products that are mentioned in the FAQs. (For a discussion of the FDA’s policy memos which claim that Hemp CBD is illegal, see here and here).

RELATED: FDA Issues More Guidance On CBD Products

While the FAQs didn’t really cite California law (except to define foods, etc.) as the basis for enforcement, it’s come to light that the CDPH has been relying on the California Sherman Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Law (not to be confused with the federal Sherman Act, an antitrust law), to pull Hemp CBD products from retail and wholesale operations. The CA Sherman Law gives the CDPH authority over foods and beverages and allows them to target products that it deems “adulterated”. In a sense, the CA Sherman Law is a lot like the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that the FDA gets its authority from (hence all of the citations to FDA policy).

Originally, AB-228 was very narrow and only would have created a law saying that the mere addition of Hemp CBD to foods and cosmetics did not adulterate them. Over the last few months, in various committees, more and more things have been piled onto the bill. Here are some of the highlights of the current version:

  • Licensed cannabis companies wouldn’t be precluded from being in the hemp business;
  • Hemp products that are foods, beverages, or cosmetics would have some minimal labeling requirements;
  • Food manufacturers that make hemp products would be required to obtain certain registrations and would need to demonstrate that their hemp comes from a jurisdiction that has an “established and approved industrial hemp program” that meets all federal requirements for the sale and cultivation of hemp;
  • The CDPH wouldn’t be able to conclude that foods, beverages, or cosmetics are adulterated just because they contain CBD; and
  • Raw hemp products would need to undergo certain lab testing and get certificates of analysis prior to sale.

It’s clear that if AB-228 becomes law, it will be a huge victory for the burgeoning hemp industry across the state. But there are a few key issues that may still not wipe out the gray areas:

  • AB-228 does not change federal law. The California legislature has no power to modify federal law or policy. The FDA’s policy memos are not affected by California law. If sellers sell Hemp CBD foods, they may still draw the ire of the FDA—which is more likely if medical claims are made.
  • AB-228 does not require the CDPH to ignore federal law. Remember that the CDPH FAQs cited the FDA’s position. It is theoretically possible that the CDPH could continue to uphold the FAQs unless and until the FDA changes its mind. I think this is unlikely to happen, but in the hemp world, sometimes anything is possible.
  • AB-228 does not take away all grounds for enforcement from CDPH. If AB-228 passes, the addition of Hemp CBD to foods and cosmetics alone doesn’t render them adulterated. But that’s just scratching the surface. Other things could render them adulterated. The CDPH can also go after “misbranded” foods and other products. And, of course, there are tons of other product specific laws (e.g., Prop. 65) that may create problems for sellers of CBD goods.

In spite of these issues, if AB-228 passes it’ll create a lot of certainty for hemp businesses in California, where there previously wasn’t much. We’ll stay tuned on updates to this law and how it will affect the hemp industry in California, and as a whole.
