Cannabis Industry Using Health Insurance To Snatch Up Uber And Lyft Drivers

0

Drivers presently earning a living through tech companies like Uber and DoorDash may want to consider delivering marijuana instead. Some cannabis firms are sweetening the pot, so to speak, by offering delivery drivers a benefits package in an attempt to get them to jump ship on their current employer and join their team. It is a move that could force the gig economy to change the way it operates in order to stay competitive, according to a recent report from Yahoo Finance.

Some California cannabis companies understand that it is going to take more than just money to attract good employees. It is for this reason that Caliva, a Bay Area cannabis producer, is now offering delivery drivers a health insurance package complete with a 401(k). The idea is to lure in those independent contractors living without a net – most gig economy jobs do not offer any kind of benefits package — to more stable employment. Considering the high cost of maintaining health insurance today, tech firms may soon find themselves struggling to keep people in the driver’s seat.

The cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing business sectors in America. There are now somewhere around 300,000 people earning a paycheck through the cultivation and sale of marijuana. That’s rather significant considering that the coal industry, the industrial division that President Trump seems hell-bent on trying to revive, now only employs around 53,000 workers.

And the jobs market for marijuana is showing no signs of tapering off. Some reports indicate that cannabis industry employment increased by around 44 percent in 2018. And the pay, well, most unskilled laborer positions have a starting wage of somewhere between $10 and $15 per hour. Not great, but better than flipping burgers! For those with an agricultural skillset, however, the salary increases significantly.

But more people today are jumping into the gig economy rather than punching a clock. A recent report from Forbes shows that independent contractors could make up more than half of the working class in the United States within the next few years. This means millions of people are interested in becoming their own boss, having control over their work schedules and the type of work that they do.

RELATED: Forget Uber And Lyft, These Drivers Would Rather Deliver Marijuana

However, there is a downside to being self-employed. Unpredictable income, no retirement savings, and a lack of health insurance benefits are all part of the game when earning a living in the gig sector. Not having health insurance can be especially problematic for older workers, and the expense of these policies can make it nearly impossible for them to maintain on their own. It’s not a situation that appears to be getting any better. A new study from Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) and the Los Angeles Times finds that health insurance and deductibles have skyrocketed vastly over the past decade. This is leaving many working-class stiffs in a financial crisis.

But the cannabis industry is onto something. If it continues to flourish into the realm of legitimate business by providing workers with health insurance benefits, we will likely start seeing more American workers in the coming years entering the field. That will be even truer once the federal government lifts its ban.

Blac Chyna Reveals NSFW Details About Her Relationship With Rob Kardashian; Mom Spends $30K To Look Like Meghan Markle

Mom Spends $30,000 To Look Like Meghan Markle

Via iHeart Radio:

It seems like the public loves everything about Meghan Markle. From her new baby Archie to her marriage to Prince Harry, she has been in headlines for years. Well one fan took her obsession to a new level – she spent $30,000 to look like the Duchess of Sussex.

Her name is Tanya Ricardo and the 30-year-old from Houston explained to Inside Edition what’s behind her desire to look like the former actress. Ricardo stated, “She’s beautiful, she’s just graceful. She’s a very, very graceful woman.” Tanya went on to say, “Our height is similar, our weight is similar, and I just want what she has that I don’t.” To get that, she underwent surgery to change her cheekbones and give herself “great curves.”

The divorced mom is aware of what people might think of her decisions but accepts that. She revealed, “They say I’m very crazy for doing this, but I don’t care. I’m going to do it.”

Ricardo turned to Dr. Franklin Rose for her eight procedures – liposuction under her chin, on her stomach, hips and lower back, a Brazilian butt lift, breast implants, and cheek contouring and filler in her face.

Blac Chyna Reveals NSFW Details About Her Relationship With Rob Kardashian

Via iHeart Radio:

While on the Wendy Williams Show on Wednesday, the media personality, who was on the talk show to announce the release of her upcoming docu-series, got very honest about her past relationship with the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star.

Wendy came out the gate with the hard-hitting questions, asking if her relationship with Rob, who she shares her two-year-old daughter Dream with, was a calculated move on her part since her ex-fiancé, Tyga, broke up with her and started dating Kylie Jenner shortly after. “I thought you were using him to get back at the whole family,” the 54-year-old talk show host said. “Get back at them by getting their most vulnerable asset, which is Rob. He let himself go, didn’t care about himself and along came you.”

“No, no it didn’t happen that way,” Chyna clarified, before explaining that their 2016 relationship began with Rob sliding into her DMs. “I thought it was like a setup,” she said, adding that she waited until around New Year’s Eve of that year to respond to his messages and they both realized they had an immediate “connection.”

Wendy then dug a little deeper asking about their sex life, which Chyna admitted started pretty quickly into their relationship. “[We didn’t have sex] the first night, maybe fifth,” she said.

The talk show host also asked who was the better lover between Rob or Tyga. “Can I choose neither?” Chyna asked with a laugh. “I gotta pick one? Better lover, Rob.”

The Difference Between Vaping And E-Cigs

Used interchangeably, vaping and Juuling are common terms that have become normcore at this point. In the span of a few short years, we’ve grown used to seeing people, often teens, sucking on devices that look like a pen-drive in areas that were previously classified as non-smoking.

The rise of vape pens has been so intense that, per BBC News, e-cigarette giant Juul is now worth $38 billion. This sum is believed to have contributed significantly to the steady decline of cigarette sales.

RELATED: Is Your Vape Pen Dangerous? Read This To Find Out

E-cigarettes and vape pens are terms used conjointly, lending themselves to tons of confusion. What you should know is that while all e-cigs are a form of vape pen, not all vape pens are e-cigs.

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling vapor from a small powered battery device. What you consume from the device, be that nicotine or marijuana, is up to you.

RELATED: Everything You Need To Know About Vaping Marijuana

What most experts agree on is that vaping is inherently healthier than smoking a cigarette or a joint. Vape pens warm up and vaporize what you’re inhaling, getting rid of the tar that fire produces and that harms your lungs. While nicotine is still bad for you, at least you’re getting rid of some cancerous factors (although Juul pods pack more nicotine than other e-cigs in order to be more addictive).

Vaping in moderation might be the best way to inhale whatever it is you want to consume.

Roger Daltrey Really Hates You Smoking Weed

Marijuana makes all music sound better, so you’d think even if the musicians performing at a concert don’t partake themselves, they’d at least encourage its usage. Artists want fans to like their music, right? Well, there seems to be an exception with The Who’s Roger Daltrey, who is not a fan of the green.

At a recent Madison Square Garden performance, Daltrey stopped the performance to speak directly to fans. At first it seemed like he was offering the usual pleasantries artists shout at fans to keep them engaged and appreciated. But Daltrey’s comments quickly became a rant about people smoking weed at the concert.

“Thank you so much for coming. I’ve gotta tell you, all the ones smoking grass down in front here: I’m totally allergic to it. I’m not kidding,” he said. “Whoever it is down there, you fucked my night. You made me really—I’m allergic to that, and my voice just goes [slurping sound], it sucks up. So fuck you!”

As SPIN Magazine pointed out, this isn’t the first time Daltrey’s chastised fans for lighting up. During a May 2015 performance at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum, Daltrey threatened to walk off stage when he could smell pungent wafts of marijuana smoke hitting his nostrils. In the recording, you can hear The Who singer ask the fan to eat their joint and when they don’t comply, he recommends them to instead “stick it up your ass!”

Let this be a lesson to all fans of The Who that might see them on tour this year: If you want to enjoy marijuana at their concert, maybe buy a ticket away from the stage. Or take an edible instead.

Former NFL Superstar Calvin Johnson Is A True Believer In Marijuana

Often when you hear former NFL players advocate for medical marijuana in their sport, it tends to come from non-star athletes. Offensive linemen, or second-string running backs. But Calvin Johnson, a.k.a. Megatron a.k.a. one of the best wide receivers in the 21st century, has recently entered the conversation and now former NFL superstar Calvin Johnson is a “true believer in marijuana.

Oddly enough, Johnson admits participating on “Dancing With the Stars” changed his perceptions around cannabis, not playing nine years in the NFL. Being on the TV program showed Johnson just what kind of difference marijuana can make.

RELATED: What Is ‘California Sober’ And Is It Really A Thing?

“When I was on the dancing show, I was using a CBD [a product of the cannabis plant] topical that my buddy gave me because my ankles were swelling up so much that I didn’t think I would be able to finish the show,” Johnson said. “The relief happened almost overnight. I was already open-minded to marijuana, but after that, I became a true believer just because of the experience.”

Johnson, by the way, made it to the “Dancing With the Stars” finale and finished third out of 13 contestants.

Now, he’s entering the marijuana business with his partner and former Detroit Lions teammate Robert Sims. Pending them receiving a license from Michigan, the pair plan on opening a grow facility as well as a chain of dispensaries.

RELATED: NFL Could Give Players Access To Marijuana Sooner Than Later

“When I was finished playing, the prescriptions from the docs stopped. It’s a slippery slope when you come out of the league and you’ve got all the Oxy and Vicodins or whatever you have to manage the pain,” Johnson said. “There has to be a substitution and cannabis ended up being that for me, and helped my wife,” who suffered from Crohn’s disease.”

Hearing Johnson talk so honestly and positively about marijuana could change the perception around football players and the plant. If he can reduce that stigma as one of the biggest stars the sport has known, maybe the NFL would be more receptive to players using cannabis as an alternative medicine.

The Queen Is Concerned Over Baby Archie Being Raised Vegan

Nothing like having your in-laws question how you’re raising your baby. It’s an annoyance that crosses international lines, as Meghan Markle is experiencing something that a lot of new moms face: scrutiny. The Queen is concerned over baby Archie being raised vegan.

There’s some buzz around the palace that the monarch is none too happy with Meghan and her irritating vegan-friendly lifestyle, which she may be handing down to her new son. Who does she think she is?

According to The New York Post, a palace insider says the Queen isn’t having it. “Bringing the baby up as a vegan simply won’t be tolerated by the monarch.” The same source says the Queen isn’t super thrilled that Meghan has also persuaded Harry to quit hunting.

“Being vegan isn’t a health risk, the question is if you got the right amount and enough nutrients,” Dr. Carrie Quinn, a pediatrician and director of the Mount Sinai parenting center, tells the NY Post.

Everyone talks about B12 deficiencies in vegans, but here’s the deal: a lot of meat eaters are also deficient in this nutrient because of absorption issues. Also, despite popular belief, B12 isn’t naturally found in animals. It’s found in “microbes that blanket the earth,” according to Dr. Michael Gregor of NutritionFacts.org, which is why much of the world’s industrial food supply is injected with the supplement.

As for other vitamins and nutrients, like calcium and iron, green leafy vegetables, oats, grains, legumes, fortified plant milks and nuts are all excellent sources.

Says R. Quinn, “A vegan mother has to be very cautious about making sure she takes supplements that are necessary so that her breast milk has the right nutrition for the child.”

Back before she met Harry, Meghan told Best Health that “I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends.”

And because Meghan’s animal cruelty stance goes beyond just a plant-based diet, animal rights group PETA UK has sent baby Archie a wool-free cardigan made of cotton and bamboo.

Really, the monarch should be proud of the new mom for her compassion, not critical.

2019 Could End Up Being The Most Disappointing Year For Marijuana Legalization

Although it was predicted early on that 2019 would be one of the most significant years in cannabis reform that the United States has seen since Colorado and Washington become the first states to legalize for recreational use, the movement, at least up to this point, has been less than impressive.

So far, all of the “sure things” that were slated to be pushed through at the state level have struggled to even get out of the gate. And don’t even get us started on the lackluster display that federal lawmakers are showing with respect to the issue on Capitol Hill. All in all, what was supposed to be the year that took the marijuana movement over the top and set it on course to go nationwide in a manner similar to alcohol is turning out to be more of the same disappointing, go nowhere hype.

On the statewide scene, cannabis advocates had New York and New Jersey pegged as the great green hope. Both states were expected to become the next to legalize marijuana for recreational use. It was a step that would have shown the country, specifically the goons in Congress, just how far the U.S. has progressed from the times when weed was considered mostly taboo. However, all hope of this happening has gone to the proverbial crap shack, according to the New York Times. Both jurisdictions have essentially thrown in the towel on the prospect of legal weed.

RELATED: Marijuana Legalization: A Rare Issue Where Women Are More Conservative Than Men

New Jersey has been trying to hash out its plan to establish a taxed and regulated cannabis market ever since Governor Philip Murphy took office. The state was supposed to have something on the books by April 2018. But lawmakers just never seemed to agree on how legal weed should take shape. There were problems with tax structure, social justice issues– all of it contributing to one big cluster muck that sabotaged it all together. Senate President Stephen Sweeney said this week that he was pulling the plug on the concept of legalizing the leaf through the Legislature. He wants to, instead, let the voters decide in 2020 if this is something they want.

It now appears the state will try to expand its medical marijuana program for the time being to compensate for its inadequacy.

In New York, the same kinds of shenanigans is what has ultimately kept the state from moving ahead with legalization. Everyone involved just wanted something different concerning how the industry would unfold, and there was never enough give and take for lawmakers to reach any agreement. It got to the point where Governor Cuomo, the one-time anti-pot warrior who had a change of heart in 2018, just decided his support was no longer worth it. He said in an interview a couple of weeks ago that he was jumping ship on marijuana legalization – -at least for now.

RELATED: WATCH: Where Does Every Presidential Candidate Stand On Marijuana?

Apparently, legislative leadership has failed to do their job and secure enough votes to get it passed.

“If they are starting to suggest that I need to twist arms, that’s a bad sign, because arm twisting doesn’t work and it means they don’t have the political support,” Cuomo said.

At the federal level, not much has changed concerning the fight to legalize marijuana federally. Although some pro-pot Democrats swore that as long as they took back control of the House in 2019, marijuana reform would make significant strides, we’re all still waiting for something to get excited about. A slew of bills have been filed – everything from the SAFE Banking Act to the STATES Act– all of which are calling for varying degrees of cannabis reform. As it stands, the banking bill passed a leading committee – that’s a positive — but it has not yet gone in front of the full House for a vote. And even if this proposal fares successfully in the lower chamber, it still has to clear the Senate before moving on to President Trump for a signature. Chances of that happening in 2019 are slim to none. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the man responsible for which bills get heard in the upper chamber, has said he has no interest in legalizing marijuana in the United States.

RELATED: Matthew Gaetz To Democrats: Get Over Trump And Focus On Marijuana Reform

Last year, when asked by reporters about ending cannabis prohibition, he said: “I do not have any plans to endorse the legalization of marijuana.” So, It is highly improbable that given his position on legal weed that he would dare help the Democrats further their agenda by siding with them on the banking issue.

Some reports also suggest that he is too focused on his interests in the industrial hemp sector(his pet project in 2018) to welcome in any competition from the cannabis industry. Sadly, the nation will be forced to endure his prohibitionists attitude until the 2020 election when McConnell goes up for reelection. There is a chance that Democrats could take control over the Senate. There are 22 GOP seats up for grabs. If that happens, the man known as Cocaine Mitch will be ripped from his throne as Majority Leader. And that is when the real change over cannabis can begin.

But does 2019 still have the potential to be a big year for cannabis reform? Sure, it has a chance. Illinois is still working to legalize marijuana this year. Some reports show that could be official by the beginning of 2020. There is also a chance that New York will make some kind of recovery and pass a new recreational marijuana bill. It just remains to be seen whether any of these plans have the kind of support needed to pan out.

Paris Hilton Says Lindsay Lohan Is ‘Lame and Embarrassing’; Mick Jagger Instagrams Epic Dance Routine After Heart Surgery

Paris Hilton Says Lindsay Lohan Is ‘Lame and Embarrassing’

Via Entertainment Tonight:

Paris Hilton sat down with Andy Cohen and Erika Jayne on Tuesday’s Watch What Happens Live!, and she didn’t hold back when it came time to play a game of “Plead the Fifth.”

Cohen started things off with one of Hilton’s most famous feuds, between herself and Lindsay Lohan, whom the heiress has openly expressed her disdain for in the past.

“She’s beyond,” Hilton said, contemplatively, before giving up on trying to find neutral adjectives and just dug in, adding, “lame and embarrassing,” as her other two “nice” things.

Although there were apparently nicer terms that Cohen had been expecting, he accepted that answer without hesitation, and moved on to his second question. Next, he asked about Hilton’s reported beef with Kim Kardashian back in 2011, supposedly over negative comments Hilton made about her body.

“I think it was the media just making something up,” Hilton said, before mentioning how Kardashian not only inspired her newly-released song, “My Bestfriend’s A**,” but also appears in the music video.

“Her a** is hot. I love it,” Hilton said, adding that she they’ve been friends for too long to ever really have beef. “We’ve know each other since we were literally two years old.”

Finally, Cohen wrapped up the interrogation by asking about whether or not there was any truth to the rumors that Hilton once made out with Miley Cyrus in a Miami nightclub.

“Maybe,” a nearly blushing Hilton said coyly, before busting out laughing.

Canada’s Legalization Of Weed Edibles Is Another Global Social Experiment

This October, cannabis-infused edibles will be fully legal on the Canadian market.

Despite claims that broader cannabis legalization would change the social, economic and cultural fabric of the country, there is little evidence to suggest that this is the case.

The government itself claimed initially that its primary intent was to legalize cannabis without normalizing it. That’s exactly what it delivered. Allowing Canadians to have access to legal cannabis while keeping the social stigma against routine marijuana use alive was arguably the result the government was looking for.

The rollout of commercially available dried cannabis flower was relatively uneventful, though shortages and high price points still allow the black market to thrive. Beyond the hoopla, nothing has significantly changed. As illegal vendors continue to prosper, the social stigma has remained, evidenced by a recent study by Dalhousie University.

RELATED: Canada: Cannabis Legalization Must Include Cannabis Equity

This recent study released in May suggests that Canadians remain supportive of legalized cannabis, but their enthusiasm for legalized cannabis and edibles has dropped in recent months.

Now, edible cannabis policy is in the spotlight as Western countries around the globe look to capitalize on this frontier market. Canada is once again acting as a global social experiment, demonstrating to international political and business communities best and worst market practices.

Edibles are big business

Generally, consumers remain open to the edible cannabis market. In American states where cannabis is legal for recreational use, edibles account for 12 to 15 per cent of the market. In Canada, sales of cannabis-infused edible products are projected to reach $4.1 billion by 2022.

While the edible market offers opportunities for prosperity for cannabis producers and retailers, there remain challenges ahead for those looking to enter this market. Negative media portrayals have raised concerns among consumers who have yet to sample edibles. Cannabis ingestion among children presents a serious public health issue, expected to increase with the advent of legally available edible products, such as gummy candies and baked goods that appeal to kids.

Some consumers who currently want to integrate cannabis-infused food into their diets without turning to the black market for edibles — and without increasing their sugar intake — cook with cannabis. But that carries great risks that aren’t being given any consideration by regulators.

RELATED: Feds Are Blowing Smoke About Canada’s Ample Pot Supplies

The effects of cannabis-infused edibles vary greatly and are dependant on dose, gender, weight and metabolism. For novice users, edibles present a chance of accidentally consuming too much as they experiment in getting the dosage right for their own personal circumstances.

There are multiple social media how-to videos on baking and cooking with cannabis, but these aren’t monitored for the accuracy of the information provided, further leaving consumers open to cannabis-related mishaps.

‘Walking a fine line’

And so the government is walking a fine line between public safety and promoting the sale of cannabis as a recreational intoxicant, particularly when it comes to edibles.

As uncertainty grows among consumers about edibles, how much of it is fed by public service messaging is unclear. Certainly, mixed messaging does little to alleviate confusion. Health Canada guidelines and recent media coverage may be contributing to an increase in uncertainty about experimenting with edibles. Health Canada’s uncompromising regulatory framework is making many feel that edibles are welcomed in Canada, to a certain degree.

While public safety campaigns target sober driving and address child safety regarding cannabis-infused candy, businesses looking to market cannabis must adhere to strict guidelines that limit the scope and reach of what they can promote.

RELATED: Canadian Marijuana Shortages Could Go On For Years

The regulations set by the federal government surrounding the legal sale of cannabis edibles are confusing to retailers. There are of course mandatory regulatory requirements regarding testing and dosage. Labelling guidelines will be the same as those for food and pharmaceuticals. However, the low THC limit of 10 milligrams per edible, and the lack of clarity around how much THC is allowable per package, has the potential to cut into a business’ bottom line.

The Dalhousie survey revealed how illiterate Canadians are about cannabinoids. Only 31 per cent of respondents were able to detect the non-psychoactive, therapeutic nature of CBD. CBD is of great interest to the food industry, but few understand it. More public education is needed.

Overall, the legalization of cannabis in October 2018 allowed for new markets in cannabis distribution. Adding edibles to the mix this fall isn’t likely to fuel broad cultural changes in the way Canadians imbibe in the short term. Canadians, by and large, have accepted cannabis, but policies are preventing businesses from catching up and leading the rest of the world in cannabis production and distribution. So far, that’s a missed opportunity. The Conversation

Guess Which Racing Animal Can’t Take CBD Anymore

Look, we understand the interest around CBD and animals. We’ve dug into the truth behind CBD for your pets, and the difference between the CBD you take vs. the CBD you might give your dog. We’ve even advised readers on how to keep your pets safe from marijuana poisoning and the moral dilemma facing veterinarians who want to give animal patients CBD, but legally can’t recommend it.

But a new controversy in the equestrian world has really thrown us for a loop. As Marijuana Moment first reported, the U.S. Equestrian Federation (USEF) issued a press release telling its members that humans might be able to legally consume CBD thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, but horses still can’t. The USEF, which establishes rules and regulations for most official equestrian-related events in the country, warned that horses caught with CBD in their systems after September 1 will be subject to repercussions.

RELATED: Are Tiger Woods And Phil Mickelson Chewing CBD Gum While Golfing?

“CBD, both natural and synthetic forms, are likely to effect the performance of a horse due to its reported anxiolytic effects,” the USEF announced in the release. “This substance is no different than legitimate therapeutics that effect mentation and behavior in horses. It is for these reasons that USEF prohibits CBD and all related cannabinoids.

“Horses competing under USEF rules who test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and other cannabimimetics will be considered in violation of GR4 beginning September 1, 2019,” the organization added.

First, it’s worth mentioning the USEF does not oversee the world of thoroughbred racing. Second, we’re not sure how the group will effectively test horses for having CBD in their system. Most standard cannabis drug tests primarily detect the presence of THC, as Marijuana Moment also mentioned. The press release did state, however, “analytical methods are being implemented to detect CBD and similar cannabinoids.”

RELATED: 4 CBD Products Marathon Runners Should Add To Their Training ASAP

Also confusing was the USEF pointing to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Code for the human regulation of cannabinoids in competition. WADA, which oversees Olympic drug testing as well as other international sports, has previously approved the human use of CBD in competition, though THC remains banned.

So a rider can ingest CBD but their horse cannot? Seems like a double standard, USEF. Hopefully we’ll have clearer answers soon.
