Average American Hasn’t Made A New Friend In Over 5 Years

New research says that the average American hasn’t made a new friend in over five years. Around half of the people surveyed say that this problem is due to shyness and other commitments that take up people’s time.

The study, conducted by OnePoll and Evite, claims that the average American’s popularity peaks at the age of 23. For 36% of participants it peaks even earlier, before the age of 21.

Around half of the people surveyed said that they would love to have more friends and meet new people, but that shyness and discomfort within new social situations and circles prevented them from achieving this. Scenarios like stressful bar scenes and feeling like everyone’s friend group is already established were brought up regularly. Other interesting results as to why adults have trouble making new friends include commitments to family members, not having hobbies that allow them to meet new people and moving to new cities.

“For the 45 percent who are looking to make new friends, the best and most underrated way to do that these days is still in-person. You can host a party, or something more low-key like book club or happy hour, and tell each of your guests to bring a friend,” recommends a specialist from Evite. “You’ll be surprised at how naturally social circles can come together, and at the lasting connections you can make when bonding face-to-face.”

When it comes to maintaining friendships, researchers say that people need to create the time and space for their friends, scheduling appointments every two weeks or even once a year if they live in different countries.

Other interesting and kind of sad data says that the average adult has 16 friends. Three of them have been around for most of their lives, five of them are friends who they’re capable of spending alone time with, and the remaining eight are friends they like but wouldn’t seek out for one on one time.

Is Prince Harry’s Archie Named After A Cat

Is Prince Harry’s Archie named after a cat? It was not a name most people expected Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to pick for their newborn son. Formally known as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor (Prince Archie would be so much easier to say), the royal bundle of Sussex (that’s a legit title, right?) was born Monday morning, photographed for the entire world to see just days later. The kid’s name took a backseat to the sight of the blessed child.

Pro to the birth, the most famous Archie is also a redhead, Archie Andrews. Until now.

A theory is being tossed around (we see you, Prince George!) that Meghan named her son after a beloved pet cat named Archie that got fat after she fed it too many frozen grapes. There’s a lot to unpack in that sentence, so take your time.

A former close friend of Meghan told The Sun that Meghan and her mom rescued the cat and named him Archie, after the Archie comic Meghan apparently collected as a child. Says this friend:

“Doria rescued Archie and he became an important part of the household. Meghan loved playing with him and she was always talking about him to her friends.”

“It’s no surprise she named her new baby Archie. She loved that cat,” added the friend.

Sadly, the cat died while Meghan was in college. He was fed up (sorry).

It could be argued that Archie was a nod to one of Princess Diana’s Scottish ancestors, Archibald Campbell, the 9th Earl of Argyll. But it’s way more fun to think the seventh in line for the throne shares a moniker with a fat feline, no?

CBD Oil For Wellness: Why Not All Doctors Are Buying The Hype

Reportedly first used to help ease Queen Victoria’s menstrual cramps back in the 1800s, CBD is now available to the masses, popping up in restaurants, bars, cosmetic counters and even big retail chains across the country. Since cannabidiol (CBD) is the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant and doesn’t get you high like THC, it’s been a pretty no-brainer component of lots of food, beverages, and lotions. It pretty much markets itself.

More frequently, CBD is making its way into spa treatments to help alleviate the muscle tension and everyday aches and pains associated with an active lifestyle.

New York City massage therapist Demetri Travlos tells CBS News that “CBD is great for relieving inflammation and pain and it’s also good for relaxation and reduction of anxiety and stress.”

Personal trainer Breanna Arrington told CBS News that she turned to CBD massages to help an injured hip after physical therapy failed her. “An injury will definitely not only not allow me to do my ‘job-job’, but also it takes a little bit of me away, a little bit of me dies,” she said.

She now gets bi-monthly massages with CBD-infused creams and says it’s worked wonders. “I’m back doing the things that I like to do, back at Taekwondo, back lifting, using my body in dynamic ways.”

But some doctors aren’t this stoked on the chemical, saying all of these “healing” claims lack scientific back-up.

“We are still at the beginning of trying to understand what CBD does in the body,” Dr. Margaret Haney from Columbia University Medical Center told CBS News. Haney, who is well-known for her cannabis research, says there’s still many unanswered questions, like if CBD gets absorbed, how it’s acting, and what dose one needs. “I need placebo-controlled evidence to be convinced,” she said.

Haney and other experts say anyone who is currently using CBD or is interested in its touted benefits should know that while products containing CBD are legal in all 50 states, it’s not regulated by the FDA.

CBS News cites a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that found 70 percent of the 84 CBD products tested were mislabeled.

“You’re really flying by the seat of your pants when you buy this stuff,” Marcel Bonn-Miller, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania, told the Associated Press, adding, “I wouldn’t trust any of it until I knew independently it was safe.”

Meme Of The Week: This Dancing Pikachu Video Created Millions Of Memes

Detective Pikachu was released this week, with a large amount of critics calling it the first decent video game movie ever made. This curse that has plagued all sorts of franchises was unable to work on Pikachu, presumably because he’s so adorable that people are willing to spend hours just looking at his cheeks.

The creative team behind the movie, capitalizing on Pikachu’s cuteness, did all they could to highlight this, releasing adorable images and clips where he’s seen drinking coffee and making weird faces. Just before the film’s official release, Ryan Reynolds retweeted an hour and forty minutes long video that looked a lot like a leak of the movie. It wasn’t.

Baby Sussex Is Already Worth A Fortune

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is not even a week old and already, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is worth more than most people who work their entire lives. In fact, he’s downright loaded, impacting the U.K. economy the moment he came into this world. Baby Sussex is already worth a fortune.

John Quelch, dean of University of Miami Business School, told Fox Business that Archie will create opportunities for other businesses by way of merchandising, licensing and potentially a bump in tourism. Remember when Meghan and Prince Harry got married? Reuters predicted that the U.K. would see a major boost in its economy to the tune of around $600 million, thanks to the flocking of tourists who were predicted to be eager to get a closeup of the matrimonial action.

According to Fox Business, the birth of Prince Louis, the youngest child of Kate and William, reportedly generated $125 million for the British economy alone last April. And while that may seem like a lot, the amount pales in comparison to his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who generated $3.6 billion and $5 billion, respectively.

And Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, told Hello! that baby Archie will increase spending in children’s wear and infant products by nearly $1.5 billion over a two-year period, saying, “Meghan and Harry are an attractive couple and their first child will naturally be of great public interest across the world.”

But forget all that. The kid alone is worth a royal bundle. He doesn’t exactly come from a poor family.

Markle was already worth about $5 million, thanks to her acting career, before she married Harry, who is estimated to have between $25 million and $40 million, according to Money.

And according to Forbes, the royal family is valued at about $88 billion.

If it’s any consolation, Archie may be wealthy, but he’s expensive, too. On average, it costs about $300,000 to raise a child in the U.K., according to 2015 estimates by the Telegraph. As for Archie, if the cost of raising Prince George is any indication, the newborn will cost upwards of a million bucks.

WATCH: Where Does Every Presidential Candidate Stand On Marijuana?

The onslaught of new presidential candidates, at times, feels never-ending. If you’re like me, you might feel like every day there’s new member of the Democratic party who wants to become President. It can be hard to keep up with who’s who or what each candidate does or doesn’t believe.

Since this is a cannabis-focused blog here, we assume you care about marijuana reform. And if you care about marijuana reform, chances are you want a candidate who also cares. Though it might seem every Democrat has attached themselves to cannabis over the past 12 months, that’s not necessarily true. Furthermore, each candidate that supports cannabis has different views on what progressive reform actually looks like around the plant.

Tips For Road Tripping With Your Dog

Memorial Day weekend marks the official kickoff of summer. Last year, nearly 42 million Americans hit the road for various reasons: to go camping, to enjoy beach, or just to visit family and friends. If you plan to join the masses this year, there’s no need to leave Fido at home. Here are some tips for road tripping with your dog.

Dogs make excellent beach and camping companions, but you first need to ensure they can handle the journey getting there. Here are a few helpful tips for getting your dog to your destination so the summer fun can start.

Pack appropriately

In addition to your suitcase, be sure to pack a separate bag with everything your dog will need for their time away. You’ll need their food and water bowl, of course, plus you may want to bring their dog bed, favorite blanket, and toys to remind them of home. For the car ride, you may want to invest in a crash-tested crate. (This is the safest way of them to travel and will ensure they are comfortable.) It can also double as a bed when you get to your hotel or Airbnb. Lastly, be sure to pack their vaccine records and your vet’s number in case of an emergency.

Calm down

If your dog is prone to anxiety or stressed about being in the car, you may want to give some calming treats before the trip. You can talk to your vet about treats that won’t make your little guy ill. Or, if you can’t get an appointment on time want to buy something online, look for homeopathic treats or calming chews, which are usually considered safe for dogs. You can also try CBD for dogs.

Another alternative is a “thunder shirt” which acts as a calming shield for your pup. They are usually used for thunderstorms and loud noises (thus the name) but can equally come in handy in the car.

Stop often

We get it—you’re on a schedule and need to get there fast. Stopping slows you down. But on long road trips, just as the humans need rest stops to stretch their legs and relieve themselves, so does Fido. Plan to stop every few hours so your dog can get out and run around. Preferably, look for rest stops with some grass or dog relief areas. But you can also Google dog parks or hiking trails along your route if you want to give your buddy some exercise time on the long drive.

Renee Zellweger Transforms Into Judy Garland For New Biopic; Alex Trebek Was ‘Writhing In Pain’ Between ‘Jeopardy!’ Tapings

Renee Zellweger transforms into Judy Garland for new biopic

Via Fox News:

The late movie star’s life is being brought to life in the first official preview of theater director Rupert Goold’s upcoming film titled “Judy,” which is adapted from Peter Quilter’s music “End of the Rainbow,” Entertainment Weekly reported Friday.

Zellweger, in her first leading role since 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” portrays Garland one year before her death from an accidental drug overdose at age 47 in 1969 as the “Wizard of Oz” leading lady arrives in London to launch a comeback in a series of sold-out concerts at the Talk of the Town nightclub (now known as the Hippodrome).

People magazine reported that to prepare for the part, the 50-year-old Oscar winner took music lessons, studied choreography and read up about the actress and singer, who shot to fame as a child star, but struggled later in adulthood. She also spent two hours a day in the makeup chair getting prosthetics, contact lenses and wigs applied.

Zellweger, 50, told the outlet that the chance to play Garland was a “magical” experience.

“It was such a joy learning about the magnificence of this person,” Zellweger explained. “I always admired her. She was so quick and so funny. She could hit the ball back with the best of them.”

Alex Trebek was ‘writhing in pain’ between ‘Jeopardy!’ tapings

When Alex Trebek announced that he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March, the “Jeopardy!” host also told fans he planned to continue working while undergoing treatment.

Now, the 78-year-old is opening up in a new interview about what it was like taping the game show, revealing there were moments that he “was on the floor writhing in pain.”

“This got really bad,” Trebek admitted to CBS Sunday Morning host Jane Pauley in a preview of the interview, which is set to air on Sunday. “I was on the floor writhing in pain. It went from a 3 to an 11. And I just couldn’t believe. I didn’t know what was happening.”

“And it happened three or four times a day while we were taping,” he explained. “So that was a little — little rough on me.”

Still, Trebek — who has been the host of “Jeopardy!” since 1984 — wanted to push through, despite one instance where he “barely” made it to his dressing room and ultimately “cried in pain” when he got there.

“I taped the show and then I made it to the dressing room on one occasion, just barely, before I writhed in pain and cried in pain,” Trebek recalled. “And I had 15 minutes before the next show. So, I got myself together and spasms of that kind usually last about 10 to 15 minutes. So, all right, here we go again: ‘Anybody got any pain pills?’ And, I don’t like taking pain pills. But I got through it.”

“And, the producers were very kind. They said, ‘Look, if you don’t wanna do the show, we’ll just cancel taping.’ I said, ‘No. We’re here. We’re doing the shows,’” he insisted.

6 Best Places To Live If You Want To Use Medical Marijuana

Not all medical marijuana programs are created equal — not even close. Depending on where a person lives in the United States, the concept of cannabis for therapeutic use could mean anything from comprehensive access, where almost any health condition is covered, right down to those where only specific patients are given restricted use.

There are jurisdictions that allow patients to smoke medical marijuana, while others demand that they consume only pills, oils or use topicals as part of the deal. Some require patients to jump through all sorts of hoops — they may need the approval of more than one doctor — before they are authorized to use medical marijuana. And then there are some places where gaining access to the herb is as easy as complaining about a throbbing pinky toe. What we are trying to say is that medical marijuana in this country is all over the place. But fortunately, the folks at Americans for Safe Access have released a detailed analysis of the situation in order to identify the best medical marijuana programs in the nation.

These are the best places to live if you’re looking to start using medical marijuana:

California

The Golden State was the first in the country to legalize marijuana for medical use back in 1996. And they did it right. The program is set up where basically any resident with any conceivable ailment — pain and anxiety are very common — can receive a recommendation from a doctor to use marijuana for therapeutic use. The program scored stellar points for access, ease of navigation and functionality. It nailed a perfect score when it comes to protecting the rights of patients. The only downside, according to the ASA report, is that the 15 percent excise tax has made the herb unaffordable for some. And there is still some improvement to be made in the areas of protecting the civil rights of patients when it comes to housing and employment. But all in all, California is the place to be.

RELATED: Will I Need to Keep Using Medical Marijuana Forever?

Hawaii

Although the state’s medical marijuana program got off to a slow start, it has matured to one of the best in the nation. It’s not anywhere as robust as California, mind you, but it has made some progressions that prove it to be a diamond in the rough. But while the state does allow medical marijuana access for some pain conditions, it doesn’t cover them all. This is one of its main drawbacks. It’s missing an opportunity to serve those chronic pain patients who rely on dangerous painkillers.

Illinois

The state’s medical marijuana program began as one of the most restrictive but has somehow managed to flourish into one of the strongest in the country. Illinois recently lifted the background checks that patients once had to endure before gaining access, and it has also added more qualified conditions. Furthermore, the state is one of the first to pass a law allowing medical marijuana to be used as an alternative to opioids. We’re seeing more pain patients enrolling now because of it. The program could be better if the state would actually add chronic pain to its list of conditions. It’s still a good place to be for patients.

RELATED: Why Won’t My Doctor Prescribe Medical Marijuana For Me?

Michigan

The rules can be a bit bewildering, but the state’s medical marijuana program is still highly revered. It has a wide range of qualifying conditions from chronic pain to cancer, and it is relatively easy for a patient to gain access to medicine. State officials recently changed policy, and now patients can start buying cannabis as soon as they receive the email confirming that they’ve registered for participation in the program. They used to have to wait around 10 business days before moving forward. The state also has one of the highest possession limits in the country.

Nevada

While the focus on Nevada as of late has been on its recreational marijuana law, it still has one of the most well-rounded medicinal programs in the nation. It scores both high and perfect marks on the issues of access, ease of navigation and functionality. But the state could improve its program and perhaps help curb its opioid problem by adding chronic pain to its list of qualifying conditions. As it stands, only those patients suffering with severe pain can be approved.

Ohio

It is one of the newest medical marijuana programs in the country, yet it is shaping up to be one of the best. It has a relatively decent list of qualifying conditions, and it is well on its way to becoming one of the first in the nation to add anxiety and autism to the program. Ohio scores high marks across the board. Yet It still has a long way to go before it is fully functional and serving patients in the manner for which it could.
