Proof Healthy Weed Food Can Be Delicious

Edibles are a growing category of the cannabis economy, but as this sector gets saturated, will all types of weed infused foods become popular? Outside of the errant vegan, low sugar, and/or gluten free item, ‘healthy’ infused foods are not as prevalent as we might think.

It makes complete sense when you consider how cannabis infused foods have been underground, stigmatized, and now only partially available from limited producers — it hasn’t been exposed to the whole wide world. What would chefs and consumers make if there were no limits?

RELATED: Are Marijuana Edibles Better For Your Brain Than Smoking?

It seems like everything edible should be given a shot if we’re really to discover new and exciting ways to use cannabis, and this includes healthy foods like plant based dishes. Is this a valid (or tasty) place to put cannabis? Even though we currently treat this intoxicant with a decadent angle, similar to alcohol, cannabis fits into our lives much differently, and binge partaking will likely wane in the post prohibition decades.

As we creep towards weed norms we can only dream of, the real question is can these infused foods still be delicious? Coming from someone who has written over 100 cannabis recipes, I think the answer is 1000% yes, but without laying out the case clearly, I don’t expect anyone to agree.

Here are some of our exquisite and healthy faves!

Raw Leaf Salads

This is among the healthiest things you can scarf down. A pile of greens is always good, but the more pungent they are, the better for you they can be. Cilantro based dishes like Tiger Salad are packed full of the same chemicals that gives cannabis its aroma—terpenes!

Roasted Chickpeas

Few foods are as affordable as legumes. Countless cultures use this protein source to make filling foods that taste great, and people seem to be coming around to their full potential, stocking shelves with stuff like roasted salted chickpeas and sometimes black beans. When roasted, these take on a nutty flavor and a satisfying crunch, and if you have some kief or powdered cannabinoids to sprinkle on, all the better the munching will be.

White Bean Tapenade

Speaking of beans, sometimes you need to have them marinated with a pile of garlic and herbs, soaking in THC rich olive oil. Capsaicin from yummy red pepper flakes and slightly fennel-esque tarragon give these beans a well rounded flavor that goes far beyond hummus while still being incredibly nutritious.

Vegan Cheese

More than trendy, vegan cheeses are part of our future plan if we want to keep the planet kicking for our grandkids. Dairy cheese is plenty good, but experimenting with cannabis and real cow curds isn’t in the cards for most of us, so trying the cashew kind is more accessible and also great for lactose intolerant people. Weed cheese is definitely going to be a thing in the future, vegan or otherwise.

Now you have a cheat sheet, and you can’t excuse away infusing only junk foods. This may seem like fun while we’re in this speakeasy, prohibition-ey frame of mind, but when we start to use cannabis for long term health, using healthy foods to dose makes so much more sense.

Hawaii Once Again Says No To Recreational Marijuana

Hawaii might be a haven for the liberal and the laidback, but the state once again failed to legalize recreational marijuana. Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English’s bill died over the weekend as it missed a key deadline, despite serious support for the legislation from Democrats.

Many speculated this could be the year for the Aloha State to realize a recreational marijuana program. This was the first time in Hawaiian history an adult-use marijuana bill was unanimously approved by a legislative committee, pushing it one step closer from conception to reality.

But the legislation collapsed as concerns mounted in the state of Hawaii contradicting federal law on the issue. The final blow came Friday, which was the deadline for Senate Health Committee and Senate Ways and Means Committee to schedule another hearing for a floor vote from the full Senate. But the Health Committed didn’t schedule any hearing, a move that ended any chance of the bill’s advancement.

Sen. Roz Baker—who chairs the Health Committee—worried that passing adult-use marijuana legislation could harm the state’s nascent medical marijuana program, which is just beginning to gain traction. Legal medical cannabis sales only started back in January of this year. Concerns over cutting the program at its knees in pursuit of recreational marijuana have also been echoed by Hawaii’s Democratic Gov. David Ige.

This does not mean Hawaiian lawmakers are against adult-use marijuana legislation in the future. Before the bill died, House Majority Leader Rep. Della Au Belatti stated her belief the state will one day have recreational cannabis, but only if legislators vet the issue carefully.

“I also think that we have enough folks who are sitting around the table who are saying ‘Let’s do it right. Let’s not just rush into things and let’s do it right,’” she told the Associated Press.

Khloé Kardashian’s Close Friend Said She’s ‘Living Out Her Nightmare’; Pete Davidson And Kate Beckinsale Show Major PDA At Rangers Game

Khloé Kardashian’s Close Friend Just Straight Up Said She’s “Living Out Her Nightmare”

Khloé Kardashian’s friends are coming to her defense in the wake of the drama that was ReD TAblE TaLk-and Khadijah Haqq (aka Malika Haqq’s sister) is out here saying Koko is living a literal nightmare. Which doesn’t sound pleasant!

Khadijah went ahead and re-tweeted a musing Khloé posted this weekend, writing “I’m proud of you publicly living out your nightmares while complete strangers judge, dehumanize, and ridicule you. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. But we can show them better than we could ever tell them I love you.”

Kensington Palace has released official guidelines for interacting with the Royal Family on social media

In their statement shared on Monday morning, the palace explains that they are working to create a “safe environment” online which requires “courtesy, kindness and respect for all other members of our social media communities” across their platforms.

The move comes after months of constant trolling and scrutiny online towards the royals, largely regarding Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.

Most of the time, there is no one more chill than Queen Elizabeth II, but mess with the royal family and Her Majesty will step up to solve the problem-probably while wearing an excellent colored suit. This morning, Kensington Palace has made the rare move to speak out against the online abuse that the royal family has been facing of late, issuing a set of frank guidelines on how to properly interact with channels run by the royals.

The statement from the palace, issued by the Twitter account of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, comes after what can only be described as an online frenzy spanning the past few months, with brutal speculation, shocking abuse and rumors more ridiculous by the day-let’s be honest, largely aimed towards the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

While the palace usually remains impartial and tight-lipped regarding online coverage of the royals (they sometimes speak out to categorically deny certain inflammatory headlines), the new guidelines shared by both Kensington Palace and Clarence House highlight the importance of creating a “safe environment on all social media channels.”

Pete Davidson and Kate Beckinsale show major PDA at Rangers game

On Sunday, Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson were photographed as they headed to Madison Square Garden, where the New York Rangers faced the Washington Capitals.

Rocking a black trench coat with dark jeans and sunglasses, Beckinsale, 45, kept close to Davidson, 25, who paired his light blue shirt with jeans and a dark baseball cap.

The duo was later spotted sitting behind the Rangers bench inside the arena, according to photos published by TMZ. Unfortunately for the Rangers, Beckinsale and Davidson didn’t bring the home team much luck as they fell to the Capitals in overtime, 3-2.

Following his split from Ariana Grande last fall, Davidson had been “casually dating,” we previously reported.

As for his rumored romance with Beckinsale, Davidson’s pop star ex has already called the pair “so cute.”

5 Tips To Help You Connect To Your Long Term Partner

Although we can all use advice when it comes to understanding and being patient with our partners, couples who have been together for a long period of time have sort of absorbed the necessary basics. These people know that they have to pick their battles and that maintaining a relationship takes a lot of work. Still, no matter how healthy your relationship is, you can always use a refresher on habits that make your partner feel more understood and your relationship more loving.

The Huffington Post spoke with different marriage counselors and therapists who gave out the most useful and necessary recommendations that they learned throughout their careers. Check out five of our favorites:

Try to connect every day

RELATED: 5 Things You Should Do Before Having Sex

No matter if it’s physically or mentally, couples should try to find the time to connect every day. This could be in the shape of a long hug or when you make an effort and you listen to your partner vent about their day. “Over time, these small interactions build into a deep sense of trust and intimacy that keep couples happy and together,” says Jennifer Chappell Marsh, marriage and family therapy.

Don’t hold on to grudges

https://giphy.com/gifs/cbc-funny-comedy-3ohhwE7yOxlydN1MfS

In order to have a long lasting relationship grudges and fights need to be overcome, no matter how big or small they are. When mistakes and fights arise, couples need to know that they still love and support each other. “The healthiest couples express how they feel if and when they’ve been hurt, they do what they can to make sure it doesn’t reoccur, they accept the apology, and then they work hard to let go and live in the present,” says psychologist and sex therapist Janet Brito.

Communicate about the hard stuff

https://giphy.com/gifs/the-grinder-fox-tv-the-grinder-xT0wlmhKIvJltvlrOg

Talking about fun things is easy, but it’s equally important to address sensitive subjects that may make you feel both uncomfortable and annoyed. It’s also important to be calm and patient ool when discussing these matters, always trying to get to a place of understanding while avoiding unnecessary criticism and harm.

Accept each other’s friends and family

Family is one of the most complicated subjects couples have to deal with. Although there are lucky ones who get along wonderfully with their partner’s families and friends, it’s not the end of the world if you find an important person in your partner’s life annoying. The important thing is to respect them and respect the relationship that they have with your partner. “Instead of criticizing each other’s loved ones, they focus on their strengths and similarities, and find ways to cultivate a bond, especially if this is important to their partner,” explains Brito.

Celebrate each other’s differences

https://giphy.com/gifs/cbc-funny-comedy-3kqvGUIQtf7hCDy0ET

The more you spend time with someone, the more you realize how different you are. This is a good thing because that means that you’re not dating yourself, but it can also become a source of conflict. It’s important for couples to understand that it’s okay to have different interests, and to respect this. “The healthiest couples are able to appreciate their partner’s different tastes and responses and react to them with curiosity instead of scorn,” says psychologist Ryan Howe.

Pyt: The Danish Word To Combat Stress And Why We All Need It

Danes are some of the happiest people in the world, and they also happen to have a lot of cool words for ways to be happy.

You may have heard about “hygge,” which has been the subject of countless books, articles and commercials. Often mistranslated to mean “cozy,” it really describes the process of creating intimacy.

But another word “pyt” – which sort of sounds like “pid” – was recently voted the most popular word by Danes, beating out “dvæle” (to linger) and “krænkelsesparat” (ready to take offense).

Pyt doesn’t have an exact English translation. It’s more a cultural concept about cultivating healthy thoughts to deal with stress. As a native Dane and a psychologist, I think the concepts that underpin the word are applicable to people everywhere.

A way to move on

Pyt is usually expressed as an interjection in reaction to a daily hassle, frustration or mistake. It most closely translates to the English sayings, “Don’t worry about it,” “stuff happens” or “oh, well.”

You might shatter a glass in the kitchen, shrug and say, “pyt.” You might see a parking ticket lodged under your windshield wiper and, just as you become hot with anger, shake your head and murmur, “pyt.”

RELATED: Yep, Cannabis Consumers Are More Chill And This Study Proves It

At its core, it’s about accepting and resetting. It’s used as a reminder to step back and refocus rather than overreact. Instead of assigning blame, it’s a way to let go and move on.

You might say “pyt” in response to something you did – “pyt, that was a dumb thing to say” – or to support another person – “pyt with that, don’t fret about your coworker’s insensitivity.”

Pyt can reduce stress because it is a sincere attempt to encourage yourself and others to not get bogged down by minor daily frustrations. One Danish business leader has suggested that knowing when to say “pyt” at work can lead to more job satisfaction.

Overcoming the tendency to blame

There’s a rich strain of psychological research devoted to understanding how we interpret and react to other people’s actions.

Studies show that we are happier and live longer when we have fewer daily hassles. And in some cases, what constitutes a hassle might be tied to how we interpret what’s happening around us.

Pyt can help people avoid the tendency to blame others. Say you’re late to an appointment and there’s a person in front of you who’s driving slowly. It can feel irrationally personal.

RELATED: Science Tells Us Why Being Stressed Out Make Us Sick

But research shows that we get angrier when we explain someone’s behavior by pointing to their incompetence, intentionality or poor character.

By saying “pyt,” you’re deciding that it’s not worth letting someone else’s actions, which are out of your control, bother you; it’s “water off a duck’s back.” You can also use other strategies, such as thinking about situational constraints – maybe the driver was ill – or considering whether this will be an issue in two hours, two days or two weeks.

Of course, you wouldn’t say “pyt” in response to being seriously wronged. And the word shouldn’t be used when you ought to take responsibility. Nor should it be used as an excuse for inaction.

Danes who teach positive psychology have also written about how applying pyt to too many aspects of your life isn’t healthy, especially if they concern your core needs or values.

Hitting the pyt button

Letting go can also be facilitated by doing things like walking in nature, doing yoga or mediation, exercising, keeping a journal or engaging in creative work.

Or you can always get a pyt button. Danish teachers use pyt buttons to teach their students how to let go. Teachers find that it can help children cope with smaller frustrations – “I lost the game” or “I can’t find my favorite pencil” – and it helps to teach them that everything can’t be perfect.

These are important skills to learn. Research shows that perfectionism is related to worry and depression. Meanwhile, self-compassion and social support can help prevent perfectionism from leading to these negative outcomes.

In recent years, the pyt button has become popular among Danish adults, who can either make one at home or buy one that, when pressed, says, “pyt pyt pyt” and “breathe deeply, it will all be okay” in Danish.

And in this case, there might be an English equivalent: the reset button. The Conversation

Study: Dogs Have Evolving Personalities Just Like Humans

Recently, a study was conducted that found that cats absorb the personalities of their owners. Humans who are neurotic, lazy or angry tend to have cats that echo these same traits.  And now, it’s been discovered that dogs also pick up character traits from their human friends.

This new study, published in the Journal of Research in Personality, is the largest one to be conducted on dogs, collecting data from over 1,600 animals of over 50 different breeds. It looked into the dog’s history, relationship with owner, and also tried to find correlations between important life events and changes in behavior.

RELATED: You’re Probably Passing Down Personality Traits To Your Cat

“When humans go through big changes in life, their personality traits can change. We found that this also happens with dogs — and to a surprisingly large degree,” says William Chopnik, lead author of the study. “We expected the dogs’ personalities to be fairly stable because they don’t have wild lifestyle changes humans do, but they actually change a lot.”

Among the most interesting discoveries made by the study is the fact that dogs’ personalities tend to follow that of their owners. For example, if you’re an active and outgoing person, your dog will most likely act and behave like you. If you’re anxious and shy, your dog will also model your behavior.

RELATED: Dogs Are More Likely To Bite People With This Personality Trait

These personality traits are important because they also influence your dog’s behavior and abilities to perform tricks and follow commands. Anxious and fussy dogs have a harder time learning and adapting to new behaviors, while relaxed dogs are more open and receptive to positive change.

The next time your dog pees on the rug or does something dumb, think about why it did that. Maybe you’re passing down your character traits or maybe your dog is just really annoying. Odds are, your dog is too old to get over this bad habit and you’ll just have to live knowing that it’s all your fault.

Medical Marijuana Can Help Your Stress-Induced Depression

Pressure, it pushes down on me, pushes down on you. Stress works its mischief by stimulating an array of receptors in the brain. Eventually, chronic stress will cause some of these receptors to become less sensitive. It’s analogous to the way that, say, long-term cannabis use causes the body’s cannabinoid receptors to become less responsive, which creates tolerance to the drug. Can marijuana help stress-induced depression?

RELATED: Here’s How Marijuana Can Help The Global Depression Epidemic

Unfortunately, chronic stress does not create tolerance. Instead, it interferes even more with the body’s normal functioning and can make us sick in a number of ways. A 2015 study by the University of Buffalo suggests that cannabis might help offset one of the major stress-induced ailments, depression.

Studies on rats showed that chronic stress suppressed the production of endocannabinoids, naturally occurring chemicals that affect our memory, moods, and motor control and which are similar in structure to the active ingredients in marijuana. It’s this similarity that gives cannabis its many celebrated powers, including a temporary feeling of well being. Researchers found that cannabis could supplement the rats’ missing endocannabinoids, which might offset the effects of stress.

Will this work in humans? Lead researcher Dr. Samir Haj-Dahmane hedges his optimism with a triple barrier of qualifiers: Cannabis “could potentially help” stabilize mood and treat stress-induced depression.

Typical hedging of bets. But there’s no room for cravenness around here. My Ph.D. in intuition sciences says, sure, why not? Score one for team cannabis!

This Week’s Music: Jonas Brothers, Carly Rae Jepsen And Solange Release New Songs

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week was a packed one for pop music, with the comeback of the Jonas Brothers (please stop screaming) and two new songs from Carly Rae Jepsen. On the other end of the spectrum, Solange makes her return, releasing a new album that pushes the limits of music genres and makes us marvel at the overflowing talent of the Knowles sisters.

Pop

Jonas Brothers – Sucker

Released along with an impressive and extravagant music video, “Sucker” does not deviate an inch from the Jonas Bother’s winning formula. It’s a fun and simple song, an earworm that digs deeper upon each listen, and that’s endearing and nostalgic for fans who’ve followed the trajectory of the band’s careers. It’s reassuring that the Jonas Brothers’ pop sound hasn’t aged a bit, but also disappointing. While it’s delightful to watch Sansa Stark and Priyanka Chopra wreak mayhem within an idyllic castle, I wish there was more depth and bite to the song.

Carly Rae Jepsen – Now That I Found You

RELATED: This Week’s Music: Kehlani, John Mayer And Julia Jacklin Release New Songs

More playful than the available songs of her upcoming record, “Now That I Found You” is a vibrant ode to the 80’s. It’s typical Carly Rae Jepsen dance song, with lovely and heartsick lyrics that make you want to jump around in your room, down the street, wherever you’re listening to it. The singer’s new album remains untitled and is expected to come out within the coming months.

Hip Hop

Solange – Way to the Show

Solange is one of the best combinations of weird and mainstream. Under the shadow of Beyonce, Solange has to be revolutionary in order to stand out, which is exactly what she’s done with her last two albums. Both “A Seat at the Table” and “When I Get Home” push the boundaries of music, delivering contemplative and fun songs that are almost shapeless. Anything can happen in a Solange record, and it’s an amazingly rare feeling. “Way to the Show,” evokes playfulness in its lyrics and beats, and it makes you want to dive deep into her sound.

TikTok Announces Child Friendly Version Of App

TikTok, the explosively popular app that allows kids and teens to create and share short videos, just got fined  $5.7 million for illegally collecting data from children under the age of 13. That includes private information such as their names, email addresses and more, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

“The operators of Musical.ly, now known as TikTok, knew children were using the app but they still failed to seek parental consent before collecting names, email addresses, and other personal information from users under the age of 13,” says the FTC’s statement.

TikTok’s growth has been well documented and reported. If you’ve never used the app, you’ve still likely heard of it. With over a billion downloads in a short period of time, it inspired Facebook to release Lasso, their own version of the looping video format. The app has been unsuccessful, like most of Facebook’s endeavors that appeal to a young demographic.

RELATED: Everything You Need To Know About TikTok, The Next Big Social Media App

Mashable explains that when TikTok was Musica.ly, its settings were set to public by default. Afterwards, if users chose to set their profiles to private, strangers could still contact them via DM. This history has understandably caused some problems for an app that’s mainly used by kids.

On February 27, TikTok announced a separate app experience that has extra privacy protections for underage users. “This additional app experience now allows us to split users into age-appropriate TikTok environments, in line with FTC guidance for mixed audience apps,” says the company’s press release.

Although the measures show that TikTok is trying to fix their problems, they’re still a little clunky, in some instances requesting users to upload images of their government issued ID as a way of proving their age.
