Researchers Say Cannabis Helps Diabetes And High Cholesterol

Bay Area research say cannabis helps diabetes and high cholesterol. Data revealed a method to expand production on one of the rarest cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, THCV. Generally, THCV, or tetrahydrocannabivarin, is only found in trace amounts in most cannabis strains. But the compound, according to scientists, could provide treatments for diabetes, lower cholesterol, and other health benefits.

“The only thing that THCV does is it’s analgesic and anti-inflammatory, it’s neuroprotective, which means it protects the nervous system,” Dr. Michael Moskowitz, who has been studying THCV, told Mercury News. “It’s anti-nausea and vomiting. It helps with bone health and bone formation, it’s sleep-promoting, it’s anti-epileptic, it’s anti-anxiety. It’s a major anti-psychotic. And it helps with appetite suppression, it’s anti-diabetic and it’s anti-cholesterol.”

“Other than that it didn’t do that much,” Moskowitz added.

Strains with higher THCV levels are believed to have come from Sub-Saharan cannabis plants. Because of a lack of understanding and market desire for marijuana that would produce the biggest “high” in users, growers were breeding strains that would create higher THC levels. This, as it were, came at the detriment of other cannabinoids in the plant.

Moskowitz, the founder of the Medical Cannabis Research Consortium of Marin, and other Bay Area researchers believe that THCV has the potential to become the new CBD. They plan on competing directly with GW Pharmaceuticals, the parent company behind Epidiolex, the first cannabis-based pharmaceutical approved by the FDA.

According to Mercury News, GW Pharmaceuticals “has also been researching THCV as potential treatment for a variety of diseases and health issues such type II diabetes, schizophrenia, epilepsy, cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s, along with several others.”

Whether or not THCV on its own is psychoactive on its own, like THC, remains inconclusive. According to Moskowitz, it has been labeled as both psychoactive and not.

Rapper 2 Milly Sues Fortnite Over Stealing His Dance Moves

Brooklyn rapper 2 Milly is suing Epic Games over the use of his dance moves without asking for his permission or giving him due credit. The rapper claims that Fortnite, Epic’s most popular video game, stole his signature “Milly Rock” dance move and renamed it “Swipe It.”

2 Milly’s case is being handled by attorney David Hecht and his team from Pierce Bainbridge. They are suing Epic Games over copyright infringement and exploiting African American talent for profit in a video game. “I was never compensated by Epic Games for their use of the ‘Milly Rock. They never even asked for my permission,” said the rapper via press release. This lawsuit could set a precedent that has consequences for Fortnite and for other video games that use existing dance moves as Emotes, making these moves popular without giving the artists their due credit.

In July, Chance the Rapper was one of the first to speak out against Fortnite, claiming that the video game should use the artists’ music if they’re taking these dance moves and using them as Emotes.

“I think they believe that they can railroad African American talent because they doubt that there will be any legal consequence,” said Hecht in an interview with Kotaku. He claims that there’s an alarming general expectation in the business world where individual artists, famous or not, can’t stand up to large corporations.

Epic games hasn’t made any comments regarding the lawsuit.

Gen Z Teens Are Ditching Their Smartphones For Flip Phones

It’s not surprising that people are afraid of smartphones. Despite the fact that the average person spends over four hours a day on their phones, sometimes it’s still shocking to walk down the street and be able to count on one hand the amount of people who aren’t actively engaged on their handheld device.

In recent years there’s been a surge of studies and research that enumerate the long list of negative side effects of social media and smartphones, including depression, trouble sleeping, and more.

The New York post reports that a small group of Generation Z teens are rebelling against smartphones and are now discovering the magic of flip phones. It’s worth noting that this generation has never had the pleasure of ending a conversation by decisively snapping their phone shut. It’s really satisfying.

When asked why she enjoys the flip phone so much, 22-year old McKenzie Bergin explains how reassuring it is to own a simple device that can’t do much except make phone calls. “I don’t think it’s trying to get anything out of me. I don’t think it’s trying to identify me to advertisers. I don’t think it’s capable of much, which is kind of nice,” she explains.

A recent study from Gartner claims that, for the first time in years, smartphone purchases have decreased 5.6 percent. That might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a significant statistic nonetheless. Maybe this reticence towards technology is a rising trend.

Hopefully we’ll grow out of smartphones like humans tend to grow out of most trends, especially those that harm them. It’s unlikely though; one of the latest bit of technological news is that Samsung is developing a smartphone that’s capable of folding, which can become today’s equivalent of the flip phone. You only have to be much more careful with the screen.

Will Legal Cannabis Save New York’s Subway?

0

Most states that have legalized marijuana for recreational consumption have established a system in which the tax revenue generated through the retail pot trade is used to pay for school and highway construction projects. It’s a good faith provision that cannabis advocates have skillfully included inside voter initiatives. They figure more people will be  inclined to support legal weed if it looks like the money will be used to further education and keep them from driving on jacked-up roads year after year.

But New York is considering a different approach. The state is reportedly discussing the possibility of using marijuana taxes to help salvage the subway system, according to a report from the New York Times.

This tax concept is similar to school and roads scheme. One of New York’s primary issues every year is paying for high-dollar subway maintenance and repairs. But now that the state is pushing to legalize recreational marijuana in 2019 — a move that is estimated to bring an estimated $700 million in annual tax revenue — there might be an opportunity to use that money to fund the $40 billion overhaul that is needed to modernize the subway system.

Governor Cuomo has promised to get legislation rolling on legal weed at the beginning of the year. There is hope that more lawmakers will support the measure if the subway debacle can be incorporated somehow.

And it could work.

The state has appointed a panel to uncover new revenue sources for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Marijuana legalization and about a dozen other ideas are being kicked around. Although the committee admits that the marijuana tax plan would be a good funding source for the M.T.A, they do not appear to be wholeheartedly committed to it.

Democratic Senator Michael Gianaris, who oversees the panel, says “there are a lot of needs we have that the new revenue need to be considered for.” Not even Governor Cuomo’s office has yet to offer its support.

However, a report published earlier this week by the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management finds that marijuana legalization is likely the best method for pumping more cash into the mass transit system.

“No new revenue source can match a tax on weed, ” Mitchell Moss, director of the Rudin Center, told The New York Post. “New Yorkers deserve a subway system that is as productive as they are. It is time for New York to legalize and tax cannabis — and to designate the revenues for mass transit.”

It is a plan that most New Yorker would be happy to support. Right now, the subway system is unreliable, and many stations are even closed on weekends for repairs. But there is a strategy in place to renovate the subway at the cost of $40 billion over the next decade. Marijuana taxes could eliminate a large part of the burden without continuing to squeeze the consumer.

Marijuana taxes might not be able to float the entire project, but lawmakers believe it should be a large part of the recreational marijuana discussion. “One source of funding is not going to be enough,” said Democratic Senator Alessandra Biaggi. “Why would we not try to include as many funding streams as possible without having to raise taxes, which a lot of people quite frankly are afraid of doing.”

Joe Jonas Fires Back After Priyanka Chopra Called a “Scam Artist”

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner did just that on Tuesday after New York Magazine’s The Cut published an article called, “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?”

The groom’s older brother wasted no time condemning the piece.

“This is disgusting. @TheCut should be ashamed to have someone write such evil words,” he tweeted. “What Nick & Pri have is Beautiful Love. Thank u, Next.”

Jonas’ fiancée and one of Chopra’s bridesmaids, Sophie Turner, also fired back at the work, tweeting, “This is wildly inappropriate and totally disgusting. Very disappointed that The Cut would give anyone a platform to spew such bulls–t.”

The post was later updated with the concluding sentences—including the “scam artist” claim—edited out.

Ultimately, however, the copy was removed from the website altogether.

Jake Gyllenhaal Joining Instagram Is the Mid-Week Surprise

On Wednesday, the award-winning actor made his debut on the popular social media app, just in time to begin promoting his new character in the 2019 film Spider-man: Far From Home.

The video showed a dumbfounded Jake put down the Spider-man comic he was reading before yelling, “Oh f–k.”

In 2017, he told The Guardian, “I’m not necessarily guarded, but I consider intimacy to be very important and I don’t think everybody needs to know about my family or my personal details… I’m old school in that way.”

Pete Davidson blocked Ariana Grande post-split: “You’re not good for my health.”

According to a source by People, Grande tried reaching out to Davidson following their breakup this past October, only to get blocked and told: “Stop reaching out. You’re not good for my health. I can’t have this in my life.”

Grande ostensibly confirmed the news herself by sharing a back-and-forth with a fan:

This Is The Absolute Best Time To Swipe On Tinder If You Want More Dates

0

If you feel like you always turn to Tinder at a time when nobody seems responsive, it could be the day and time you’re using your app.

According to Tinder, the best time to be swiping is exactly 9 p.m. (EST) on Monday. In August. But it’s December, you say? Yep. While the month may have changed, chances are, Monday evenings are still the best time. Most likely to do the “Monday Blues” and the reality that you just spent another weekend alone. Or worse yet, with a total loser.

For what it’s worth, March was the most active month for British people swiping in 2018.

These are all revelations of Tinder’s Year In Swipe 2018.

Other interesting tidbits: The most conversations were started on the app on the weekend of October 13-14. And according to the YIS, the survey highlighted the things that bring us together, like Drake, pizza and sitcoms from the early 2000s.

  • Drake’s In My Feelings was the #1 Spotify Anthem for Tinder users across all countries with Spotify, with Ariana Grande’s empowering hit, God is a Woman, making the top 10 in 6 countries, including the U.S., UK, Brazil, Spain, Australia and Japan.
  • In the U.S., U.K. and Australia, the Friends ‘How You Doin?’ GIF reigned supreme. But in Brazil, Spain, France, Germany, Russia, India, Japan and South Korea, the Waving Fox took the top spot as the most-used GIF.
  • Pizza was among the top 10 most mentioned foods in people’s bio across 9 different countries! Just proving that, no matter where you live, pizza is a universal language.
  • Beer pairs well with pizza as one of the most popular emojis listed in bios, making it into the top 10 for all countries, except the UK (which preferred posting puppies), Germany (which chose wine) and Russia (who selected dancing).

Here’s The Number One Reason Not To Skip Your Office Holiday Party

0

An invite to the holiday staff party usually brings groans from office workers who would rather do a million other things than mingle with the same people they see day-in and day-out. But if you start thinking of your office party as a chance to promote yourself, you may be able to ignite the holiday spirit after all!

Besides watching Linda in Accounting throw back one too many eggnogs, these yearly parties are a great way to schmooze with people you don’t always get to see, like bosses. And while this is not the appropriate time to bend their ear about a promotion or how you think 30 hours a week is sufficient, it is an opportunity to talk with them and get to know them on a personal level.

“These parties are permission to network and talk to people you don’t know,” Gayle Hallgren-Rezac, co-author of “Work the Pond! Use the Power of Positive Networking to Leap Forward in Work and Life” told CNN.

In other words, don’t skip it. Why? Two words: job security.

Matt Youngquist, founder of career coaching firm Career Horizons, told CNN:

A lot of corporate and promotional decisions, like when layoffs are happening, is as much about cultural fit as it is skills.

When you’re bosses see you at a holiday party, they’re going to recognize that you’re a “team player” (gag, right?), but outside of that, they’ll get to know you outside of the office (even if, heaven forbid, your office party doesn’t leave the office walls), which could lead to a promotion.

Said Hallgren-Rezac, “You build trust with these people, they can give you access to information you couldn’t get any other way, people who could become your champion.”

Hey, if nothing else, you probably got some good social media blackmail fodder of that eggnog incident.

Take A Look At Lil’ Bill, The World’s Smallest Cow

The week, following the discovery of Knickers, finds Lil’ Bill. If you recall, Knickers, dubbed the world’s largest cow, made headlines and memes throughout the past few days due to its amazing size. Now, the internet can’t stop gushing over Lil’ Bill for the opposite reason.

The Sun reports that Lil’ Bill gained his internet fame when he was taken to Mississippi State University in order to get a check up. He is one tenth of the normal size of a calf, weighing only 10 pounds, but having no apparent defects. “Occasionally, we get a case that has us scratching our heads a bit,” says the University’s vets.

After his discovery and notoriety, the University promised to give out updates regarding the calf’s health through their Facebook page.

Via Facebook:

Rest assured that #LilBill is still receiving incredible care and lots of love! We are working on a story that will give you all an idea of why he’s so small, what we’re doing for him, and what his prognosis is, so keep your eyes peeled!”

Lil’ Bill could be the world’s smallest cow ever recorded. If he is, he would be added to the Guinness Book Of World Records. Hopefully, the little guy has no future health issues and remains tiny, furry and adorable.

Oregon Is Seriously Considering Legalizing ‘Magic’ Mushrooms

Oregon could soon be on its way to legalizing psilocybin mushrooms, following the Secretary of State approving language for a 2020 ballot initiative. Should activist accumulate 117,578 signatures to qualify for the ballot, Oregon voters could decide to decriminalize “magic mushrooms” and allow for their growth with a license.

“The intent of the 2020 Psilocybin Service Initiative of Oregon is to advance a breakthrough therapeutic model currently being perfected in research settings at top universities around the world,” chief petitioners Tom and Sheri Eckert wrote. “We envision a community-based framework, where licensed providers, along with licensed producers of psilocybin mushrooms, blaze trails in Oregon in accordance with evolving practice standards.”

Oregon is not alone in their efforts to legalize psilocybin mushrooms. Organizers in both California and Denver, Colorado rallied to include initiatives that would decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms on the 2018 midterm ballot, though their efforts ultimately fell short.

Currently, psilocybin mushrooms are classified as a Schedule I drug by the FDA, the same category as heroin and cannabis. To be a Schedule I drug means the substance in question holds no medicinal value. As researchers find mushrooms have a positive effect on anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, and Seasonal Affective Disorder, that could change.

In addition, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have endorsed the use of magic mushrooms in mental health treatments and advocated for the federal government to re-schedule the drug. They just might be listening, too. For the first time in U.S. history, the FDA fast-tracked research on psilocybin from U.K.-based Compass Pathways. The move could open the door for clinical trial of magic mushrooms to begin as soon as 2021.
