Will Using CBD Cause Me To Fail A Drug Test?

Now that cannabidiol (CBD) has become as much of a household name as Coca-Cola, some of the patients who experiment with this alternative medicine have concerns about whether it will cause them to fail a drug test.

Now that cannabidiol (CBD) has become as much of a household name as Coca-Cola, some of the patients who experiment with this alternative medicine have concerns about whether it will cause them to fail a drug test. They are worried that their use of the non-intoxicating cannabis derivative will bring them trouble with their place of employment or disqualify them from any number of benefits in which the federal government must sign off. But is there any reason to believe that CBD could wreak such havoc?

As we have mentioned before, not all CBD products are created equal. There are high-CBD strains of marijuana being sold in legal states that have around 30 percent CBD and also contain sizeable amounts of the intoxicating THC – enough to ensure a failed drug screen.

But the hemp-based CBD oils and pills being sold in most states all across the nation do not come with the same risks. These products typically contain no more than 3.5 percent CBD and, more importantly, they have only trace amounts (0.3 percent) of the stoner compound know as THC.

The best way to explain the difference is by putting it in terms of beer. Most domestic brews contain between 4.2 and 5.5 percent ABV (Alcohol By Volume), while non-alcoholic versions, such as O’Doul’s, have only around 0.4 percent ABV. While these booze-free concoctions technically do have some alcohol, the consumption of these beverages cannot lead to intoxication. Just the same as CBD products with 0.3 percent THC cannot produce a high or put the user in jeoprdy of failing a drug test.

Drug screens are only searching for one specific cannabinoid when trying to determine whether the subject has been using marijuana, and that is THC. So no matter how much CBD is coursing through a person’s veins at the time of test, it will not bring about a failed result. The only way the small amount of THC buried in hemp-based CBD products might be able to shine through and trigger a false positive is if a patient was consuming upwards of 1,000 milligrams a day. To put this into perspective, most CBD users consume an average of 120-to-160 milligrams daily.

But a false positive does not mean a failed drug test. Lots of common, legal products can cause false positives.

Some of the latest research shows that CBD can stay in a person’s system for more than 10 days. Because CBD is a fat-soluble compound, the same as THC, the length of time really depends on frequency of use, a person’s body weight and overall diet. But again, it is not necessary to worry about how CBD might affect a drug test. It is irrelevant.

CBD will not cause you to fail a drug test.

This Week’s Music: Grimes, Zolita And Los Unidades

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column features the terrifying return of Grimes, a queer break up banger from Zolita and a song from Los Unidades, which is really just Coldplay in disguise. Seriously. Check out their songs.

Pop

Grimes – We Appreciate Power

Grimes’ latest single is inspired by the North Korean band Moranbong, an all women group that sings songs that spread the message of dictator Kim Jong-un. Light stuff there. Grimes as always is bleak, terrifying and talented, interpreting the part of a “pro A.I. Girl Group propaganda machine”  with aplomb. “We Appreciate Power” is absolute madness, making you shudder in fear of the state of the world while also nodding your head approvingly because its got a great beat. With lyrics that spread the message of our future A.I. overlords (“What will it take to make you capitulate?”), Grimes’ head looks like a scary place to inhabit. I believe what she says though; catch me downloading this song just in case my laptop has a mind of its own.

Indie

Zolita – Truth Tea

Related: This Week’s Music: Miley Cyrus, Arctic Monkeys And Rina Sawayama

Zolita’s latest single is a break up banger, featuring a wild and fun video that displays some of the singer’s coolest traits. Known for her queer content and her honesty, Zolita is a young pop-star with an edge. “Truth Tea” is a story about heartbreak that has a great rhythm and that showcases the artists’ vocals and vision. I wish it wasn’t called “Truth Tea,” because it feels too much like a meme, but it’s definitely an interesting and unique experience, especially in the context of our social media-ruled dating world.

EDM

Los Unidades (ft. Pharrell) – E-Lo

Los Unidades is Coldplay in disguise. The British band’s side project is sadly more of what Coldplay has been doing over the last couple of years, forgetting that at some point in their careers their lyrics used to have some meaning and their vocals weren’t made up of Chris Martin’s catchy ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. Despite the apparent vacancy of “E-Lo,” the song has plenty of good intentions and is part of Global Citizen’s EP. I guess that counts for something.

People Think Meghan Markle Is Having Twins And Here’s Why

What would a celebrity pregnancy be without speculation from complete strangers? Meghan Markle isn’t due until spring and already, people are gossiping about her offspring. Mainly, they suspect she’s having twins. Why? Because her stomach is big. You know, as if she’s pregnant or something.

This photo of Markle and Prince Harry leaving a concert Tuesday night makes it seem like Markle’s tummy popped during their date night.

Others think she’s further along than she’s letting on, speculating that she may pop in early to mid-March. As Cosmo points out, if Markle is expecting that early, that would make her almost six months pregnant, meaning her baby is currently the size of an eggplant.

What do you think?

Meme Of The Week: Decade-Old ‘Cry For You’ Becomes The Most Memeable Song

September’s “Cry For You” is one of those songs that takes you back in time. Initially released in 2005, it’s a song that came out during the big wave of electronic music, the one that lead to EDM (electronic dance music), which would then take over our lives. “Cry For You” was on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart for three weeks during 2007 and even though it’s not one of the world’s best songs, it’s still pretty fun, with a catchy chorus that you’ll have a hard time shaking.

For some reason, everyone is listening to this song again in 2018, all because of a meme.

Although we don’t know who was the first person to create the “You’ll Never See Me Again” meme, different users throughout Twitter caught on pretty quickly, taking advantage of the song’s beat and the fact that we’re all familiar with it to make stupid and funny memes.

By pairing a clip of the ridiculous music video (which somehow features dancing women on top of sound waves) with a really stupid fact or joke, Twitter users developed a meme that’s pretty funny and malleable. These memes don’t demand much thought; they’ll just make you laugh out loud if you’re in any way sensitive to stupid internet humor. Check out some of our favorites:

Newspaper Handed Out Joints To Celebrate Legalization

0

The journalists at Lansing’s City Post were heroes on Thursday morning. Laden with kind joints, the paper’s employees gave friendly greetings to those passing by City Hall and offered them the gift of free cannabis. Yes, the newspaper handed out joint to celebrate legalization!

It only took an hour to run out of jays, but not everyone was accepting the offer. More than half (56 percent) of Michigan residents voted yes on the cannabis legalization law and that’s presumably in the ballpark of people taking free weed from the alternative newspaper.

“We wanted to do something to celebrate this occasion,” said City Pulse reporter Kyle Kaminski to the Lansing State Journal, adding that his view that fewer people getting arrested and prosecuted or even incarcerated for cannabis offenses was a good thing

The new law says that if you are 21 or over, you may now grow or possess small amounts of cannabis. Because of the strict age enforcement and common sense, the City Pulse crew made sure to check IDs before dispensing the marijuana.

If you’re wondering if the newsies and their new found friends were sparking up on the street, that would be a no. It’s illegal to smoke in public areas in Michigan, but it is legal to give away small portions of cannabis in public.

In fact, giving pot away is the only true way to keep legal as it now stands. It will likely take years for Michigan to implement an adult use marketplace and in the meantime sales between friends or even strangers is not allowed. Gifting the plant is, however, so it is able to exchange hands.

The best news out of Michigan is that now possessing or growing herb will not get you penalized and all adults have access. Plus, not every state that goes recreational or medicinal has laws in place to grow your own, so that is a major advantage for Michigan residents who enjoy the plant and its inner workings.

Ben Schwartz, Publisher of City Pulse, said that the paper obtained the cannabis from a Lansing based dispensary, Pure Options. He also commented on the normalization of cannabis as a whole, “People are taking it in stride. If we were Colorado, the first to legalize, I think there’d be a big party today. I think people have accepted for a while that this bound to happen.”

Congratulations for the newspaper handed out joint to celebrate legalization and may they print for years to come!

Marijuana Advocates Sue Utah Over Compromised Cannabis Bill

Making good on a promise to come at the state with all guns blazing if a medical marijuana ballot initiative was trashed for compromise legislation, a couple of cannabis advocacy group are suing Governor Gary Herbert and officials with the Health Department for dealing in corruption. The lawsuit asserts that the state allowed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to have an unconstitutional influence in the state’s new medical marijuana law, and they are asking for the state to honor the measure approved by the people — Proposition 2 — in the midterms

Ahead of the November election, the Mormon church got together with lawmakers, cannabis advocates and the governor to negotiate a compromise to the medical marijuana initiative that was expected to have success at the polls. The concept behind this deal was that if the pro-cannabis folks agreed to some middle-of-the-road offering (something a little more restrictive) than win-or-lose medical marijuana would be made legal one way or another. If they failed to take the deal, and the ballot initiative passed, Mormon leaders promised to make it a hard road. So, feeling pressured to do what was right for patients, cannabis advocates went along with the compromise.

Proposition 2 was indeed approved by the 53 percent of the voters last month – legalizing medical marijuana statewide. But then on Monday, the state legislature and Governor Herbert swooped in and pushed through a compromise bill, which knocked the one the voters approved off the table.

The new law does not allow much cannabis industry influence. All of the dispensaries will be run by the Utah Health Department and there are many other restrictions, as well. For instance, there is no cultivation allowed, certain pot products are banned and all medical marijuana must be dispensed by a state-licensed pharmacist.

This is the reason Together for Responsible Use and Cannabis Education, or TRUCE, and the Epilepsy Association of Utah has come forward with a lawsuit. They believe this will hinder patient access.

“Anything that defeats the right of the people to pass their own legislation under our constitution should be declared unconstitutional. Otherwise, it’s totally illusory,” TRUCE attorney Rocky Anderson told Fox 13. “It prohibits the control of the state or interference in the functions of government by any church and that is exactly what we have seen here.”

The complaint is calling for an injunction that would prohibit the state from moving forward with its new medical marijuana law. It is also asking the courts to force the state to implement Proposition 2.

Governor Herbert’s office has not yet responded to the lawsuit. However, after signing the compromise bill earlier this week, he said Utah just passed “the best designed medical cannabis program in the country.”

It is important to understand that this case is more than just a debate over how many dispensaries and what types of pot products will be allowed. It’s really about state government disregarding the people and doing what they want. “It prohibits the control of the state or interference in the functions of government by any church and that is exactly what we have seen here,” Anderson said.

Less Than 0.01% Of Texas Patients Have Been Prescribed Medical Marijuana

Bureaucratic red tape in Texas is putting a chokehold on patient access, just one year into the state’s medical marijuana program. The Compassionate Use Act is considered the strictest medical marijuana program in the nation, with low-THC oil offered only to patients suffering from intractable epilepsy. Of the estimated 150,000 people the medicine could help, only 574 patients have been issued prescriptions, according to the San Antonio Express-News. That means only 0.004% of possible patients have received the medicine under current law.

The problems stem from the system designed by conservative lawmakers. Patients need approval from two doctors to qualify for the medicine. With fewer than 50 doctors registered to participate in the program, and none of those doctors located in West Texas or the Rio Grande Valley, access for rural patients has proven quite burdensome.

Another issue relates to doctors. Texas law stipulates that doctors must specifically prescribe patients the medicine instead of merely recommending it, which is language used in other states with legal medical marijuana programs. This provides certain protections for doctors, who might otherwise be uncomfortable prescribing medical cannabis.

“As we move forward, changing that language, I’m sure we are going to see the number of physicians grow exponentially and very quickly,” said Heather Fazio, with the Texas Marijuana Policy Project, told the Express-News.

Texas lawmakers have made concerted efforts to expand the program moving into the new year. Multiple bills have been filed for the upcoming legislative session in 2019, including one that will decriminalize cannabis in Texas, while another will significantly expand patient access to medical marijuana by adding more qualifying conditions.

Perhaps the biggest issue for patients, however, is cost. Because health insurance won’t cover the prescription, patients must pay out of pocket. According to one cannabis producer in the state, a monthly supply of the oil costs patients around $380.

5 Common Relationship Problems That Arise During The Holidays

0

The holidays are a time for a lot of joy and stress. The end of the year, family gatherings and expenses piling up can take a toll on even the most organized and successful people. According to the Huffington Post, holiday stress in relationships is very common, with different marriage specialists and experts highlighting that there’s a trend that appears during this time of the year that can affect all types of couples.

These therapists mentioned some of the most common fights and stressors that couples face. Check out some of these scenarios paired with their best advice.

Holidays are emotional moments, with each person having a set of beliefs and traditions that they treasure very much. When these traditions collide, fights can arise when no one is willing to compromise. “Our holiday traditions are set when we’re children and tend to carry a strong emotional charge, making us more attached to our way and less open-minded or flexible than is ideal,” says Winifred Reilly.

It’s important to find middle ground on these instances, creating the space for couples to enjoy both traditions or coming up with a third altogether.

Holiday spending that gets out of hand

Spending too much money over the holidays is a common issue, one that’s made worse when you’re in a relationship and need to come clean about your spending. It’s important for the couple to make a sort of spending plan and divide tasks between each other, coming clean when you’ve spent more than you planned. “To avoid the feeling of financial infidelity, sit down and discuss a realistic financial plan ahead of time. Together decide how much money you can afford to spend, create a budget and stick to it,” says Sheri Meyers.

It’s also common for partners to have different expectations over the holidays, with one of them wanting to spend more and the other wanting to save up. It can also help talking to your partner about presents and decorations, agreeing on something that makes you both happy and that can stave off and argument.

Dealing with relatives can be taxing, especially if they’re toxic or have a poor relationship with your partner. It’s important to have a plan in how you’ll face family members, especially those that are more problematic. “Practice taking a deep breath and see yourself as the gracious host or hostess acting respectful, grown-up, level-headed, responding non-defensively and filling your home with warmth, praise and approval,” says Sheri Meyers.

The holidays can feel like a blur, adding stress and tension to an already full and stressful life. Planning for trips, presents, family gatherings and more can affect your health and your plans, so it’s very important to take it easy and to be as patient as possible. Meyers recommends “a daily dose of the three A’s,” which refers to attention, appreciation, and affection; all critical factors in remaining connected to your partner.

Imbibing too much

It’s too easy to indulge in all sorts of things over the holidays, including food, alcohol and laziness. It can help to be mindful and to have a conversation with your partner over the kind of celebration you want to have. It’s okay to have fun and to let loose over the holidays just as long as everyone’s okay with it.

That Time Duchess Kate Stopped At A Random Pub To Use The Toilet

When you’re a mum and your little girl has to use the potty, you find the closest one possible. In the case of Kate Middleton, it was the toilet at The Phoenix pub in south London.

According to the Daily Mail, Duchess Kate ducked into the bar when three-year-old Charlotte found herself having to use the toilet.

“It just goes to show that the royals are like any other family. When your kid needs to go to the loo, they got to go!” one patron told the publication.

Princess Charlotte was reportedly wearing black shoes, white tights, a white blouse, blue skirt, and light-blue coat. Blue is her signature color, after all.

Kate was dressed casually in blue culottes and a matching long-sleeve top.

According to patrons, a plain-clothed female detective from the Royal Protection Squad cleared the area before Kate and Charlotte entered to make sure they were safe.

Pub regular Maggie McKinney told the Daily Mail:

I was sitting in my usual chair and when I looked up I saw Kate Middleton, I mean the Duchess of Cambridge and her daughter Princess Charlotte.

She said Charlotte just “trotted in” with her mom, used the toilet and then trotted back out. “They could not have been in the pub for more than ten minutes,” she added.

“Someone went up to the bar and asked if the wee girl could go to the toilet and then in they came.

‘They seem very nice, totally normal. Princess Kate was holding her daughter’s hand. Princess Charlotte was just any other little girl.”

Denver Wants To Erase Low-Level Marijuana Convictions

For those Colorado residents who got popped for low-level cannabis crimes before the passage of Amendment 64 in 2012, it’s been a limiting mark against them when it comes to employment, housing and not to mention the legal problems they had to go through in the first place. Now, in a socially progressive idea that’s on its way to action, Denver officials are planning to wipe the slate clean for thousands of residents.

The erasures of records would cover those convicted between 2001 and 2013. The district attorney is onboard and is working to manifest this new lease on life for many individuals.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said in a statement, “This is an injustice that needs to be corrected, and we are going to provide a pathway to move on from an era of marijuana prohibition that has impacted the lives of thousands of people,”

As it stands, people are able to petition the court to remove low-level cannabis related offenses, but that takes time and money that not everyone has available. The initiative of government officials to do this on their own is another great indicator that the tides continue to change in favor of cannabis and against the once prominent stigma that surrounded it.

At this point, nearly a dozen states and the District of Columbia have outright legalized cannabis and 33 more states have medicalized the plant. Regardless of marijuana’s ridiculous Schedule I status, meaning that it has no known medical benefits and a high potential for abuse, the U.S. continues to push ahead with cannabis reform. As does the rest of the world. Luxemburg just announced that it will be the first country in the E.U. to legalize recreational use and Canada became the second nation in the world to legalize adult use back in July.

The roots of the marijuana movement were planted deeply in the culture of social justice and that meant keeping people out of jail for a harmless and beneficial plant, getting people back out of jail when they were caught with the herb and making sure that the very ill had safe access to the best cannabis. They continue to inform the budding industry and record expungements for cannabis offenses make sense and will change lives for the better.
