California Recreational Pot Shortage Sends Prices Soaring

When California voted to tax and regulate cannabis, which became effective on January 1, the regulate part went slightly neglected and now certified, compliant growers are not only a rarity, they just can’t keep up with the rate of new dispensaries opening weekly and their demand.

This leads to the potential of black market marijuana costing less than legalized recreational marijuana and may drive some imbibers back underground. The absolute opposite effect wanted with full blown legalization.

Of course, full blown is a little blown out of shape. As long as cannabis remains a Schedule I drug, making it illegal at the federal level, there’s going to be a stigma that yet permeates and adjusts the marketplace. Wary officials are already worried about an increase in fatal accidents and youth usage, though there is no evidence to warrant their concerns.

At this point, only around 10 percent of producers in the state have registered to be state authorized and compliant growers. California has been doing things its own way when it comes to pot since the original enactment of Prop 215, which made California the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

Prop 215 was a lenient law that allowed most patients to obtain a card and visit a dispensary. It was revolutionary and paved the way to all other states that legalized both medical and recreational cannabis.

Now the landscape isn’t as giving and regulations have become more than a buzzword. A fire need be lit under the feet of growers who still want to operate below board or who have been reluctant to step up to the legalization table. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rabble rousing or not, states have pretty much given his rhetoric a very cold shoulder. Vermont went ahead and legalized recreational pot despite his threats and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy just expanded the medical marijuana laws in his state and is expected to legalize this year.

When California first went legal, the predictions were that cannabis was going to be dirt cheap. Somewhere between pennies on the dollar and through the roof would be the option that makes the most sense, especially to quash the black market and the dangers that come with it. Hopefully more growers will hop on board as the legalized California continues to grow itself.

Research: Marijuana Joints Are Getting Smaller, But Why?

Are the size of marijuana joints shrinking? That appears to be the conclusion of a recent study from Spain examining “the standard joint unit.”

According to the research, released online before being published in the July issue of journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, basic rolled joint contains 0.25 of a gram of dried marijuana.

If you think that sounds on the small side, you’re not alone. Just last year, another study said the normal weight was 0.66 grams. A federal government study arrived at 0.43 grams being the standard weight.

Now, by this point, some of you may be wondering why are researchers getting paid to figure out the cannabis-Zig Zag ratio. Well, there is a reason. Determining how much cannabis is in a typical rolled marijuana cigarette helps law enforcement and drug prevention groups assess the scope of the industry.

“It turns out to be a critical number in estimating how much marijuana is being consumed [nationwide], how much [of the drug that] drug-trafficking organizations are putting on the market and how much states might expect in revenue post-legalization” said Greg Ridgeway, an associate professor of criminology and statistics at the University of Pennsylvania, who conducted his own study last year. (Ridgeway’s analysis concluded that 0.32 grams is the typical weight of a joint.)

Simple math tells you that 1 gram of cannabis should yield four standard-sized joints. But if you ask anybody who has rolled one they would certainly seem unlikely. Most experts will suggest that two or three joints per gram is more like it. In many retail stores where cannabis is sold legally, pre-rolled joints usually have 0.5o to 0.75 grams of cannabis.

Of course, personal preference plays a large role in the roll. Do you prefer a “pinner” or a “phatty”? Is this for personal use or will you be sharing with one or more people? And how well do you grind your bud before the roll?

Can You Smoke Marijuana On Twitch Streams? Ask Snoop Dogg

How does an American media company that hosts millions of users’ live streams regulate what is and isn’t allowed? The simplest answer is to follow the law. But what happens when federal and state law is, well, diametrically opposed? How do you punish some users while letting others off the hook?

Those valuable questions, I believe, are how we reach Twitch users complaining about Snoop Dogg smoking blunts while playing video games.

To be clear, I don’t mean to trivialize the issue because it is an important discussion. Let’s back up. Snoop hosted a Twitch stream of him playing SOS, a promotional game currently in early access. His stream hit around 80,000 viewers and those tuned in saw Snoop spark a blunt mid-game. Administrators have blocked other Twitch users’ streams from such behavior, but Snoop’s was not.

It wasn’t because he happens to be Snoop Dogg, who you probably expect to engage in that exact behavior. Instead it’s because Snoop was in California, where cannabis usage and sales became recreationally legal as of Jan. 1. That means Twitch administrators have little reason to believe Snoop is breaking any law—he could’ve legally bought that weed he is smoking at a local dispensary, as is his right.

But this has been a confusing issue for Twitch users, as cannabis laws change around the country. Twitch community guidelines state users must “respect all applicable local, national, and international laws while using our services. Any content or activity featuring, encouraging, or soliciting illegal activity is prohibited.” In addition, any self-destructive “activity that may endanger your life or lead to your physical harm is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: suicide threats, intentional physical trauma, use of illegal drugs, and drinking excessively.”

Marijuana usage remains highly debated, though. Last year one Reddit user reached out to Twitch for further clarification and received the following message:

Greetings,

We discourage broadcasters from the use of marijuana on our services. If doing so violates your local laws, causes you to inflict harm upon yourself, or is a focus of your broadcasts, this activity is entirely prohibited from broadcast.

If broadcasters do engage in this activity, the Mature Content warning must be enabled.

Please refer to our “Rules of Conduct(Twitch’s Rules of Conduct)” regarding breaking the law, self destructive behavior, and non-gaming content for more information.

Best wishes

To be clear, Twitch isn’t lackadaisical in its enforcement of these rules. Just this month actor Andy Dick was permanently banned from Twitch after he was snorting cocaine during a live stream. So no, celebrities are not given special treatment.

A Twitch representative did reach out to Polygon and stated that “because legality varies from Country to Country and State to State, we encourage people to follow their local laws.”

Of course, that’s exactly what Snoop Dogg was doing. As always be more like Snoop.

Weed Goals: Monica Lewinsky Has Her Own Strain Of Marijuana

Monica Lewinsky, believe it or not, has done a lot of things in her life, even though people still want to remember her from that one incident. You know which one.

Recently, she’s been all over the news. She launched an anti-bullying campaign, she has a strong presence on social media, she may even have an entire season of “American Crime Story” inspired by her infamous scandal, and she got the highest honor that the cannabis world can provide: her name on a marijuana strain.

Sugarleaf, the Washington based cannabis company, created a hybrid strain in her name. You can purchase a 14-gram container of it for a 100 bucks, and smoke Monica Lewinsky for a really long time.

Monica seemed pretty excited to discover that she’s famous within the cannabis world, tweeting an image of the marijuana container and some emojis.

Sugarleaf also advertised their product, but we’re not sure how Lewinsky would feel about that.

Rude.

What Your Sleep Position Says About Your Relationship

0

Sure, sex can lead to sleep, but can it also be a byproduct of your sleeping position?

A new study by Mattress Advisor uncovered an interesting sex tidbit: there’s a correlation between the way couples sleep and how much sex they have.

They surveyed 1,000 people currently in relationships about their favorite and least favorite sleep positions with their partner. The favorite?

Many respondents were pretty fond of having some space to themselves when sleeping. For men and women alike, the most popular position involved partners sleeping on their sides facing away from each other, with a small amount of space between their bodies.

Curling up on your side is also the sleep position scientists recommend for breathing and lower back pain benefits.

According to the survey, the position that inspired the most physical intimacy on a regular basis is a position that is already quite physical.

Our findings suggest positions that already involved quite a bit of contact translated to sex most easily. The sleeping arrangement most correlated with sex featured couples facing each other with limbs intertwined. Close spooning with the man on the outside took second place.

Couples sleeping in this position rated their sex frequency a solid 4.2 out of five. Spooning (with the man playing the role of the Big Spoon) ranked second with 3.7.

It’s interesting to note that the spooning position is most popular with couples who have been together for 1-3 years. And for couples who have been together at least 30 years, the sleeping back-to-back with a bit of space in between is preferred.

For those who are poor sleepers, it’s not just affecting your mood, it’s affecting your romance vibe. Of the respondents who reported sleeping poorly, 74.5 percent said they were satisfied with their relationship compared to the 95.9 percent who got good sleep.

If you’re going to sleep poorly, make sure it’s because you’re having lots of sex.

Watch This Woman Convince Partygoers To Vape From Wii Remote

If you’re over 18, then you surely remember the Wii. It was a strange video game console, one that was eclipsed by the Xbox and PlayStation but that featured one thing that the others didn’t: Sports! The Wii was the best for sweating it out with your friends as you played fake tennis with some really fake looking characters. The were called Miis, which is probably why the Wii never had much posterity.

While the first toker looks like he’s playing along with the girl and her Wii prank, the other people that follow look truly puzzled that there’s no smoke coming out of their mouths.

While the Wii was always meant to be interactive, these people took things too far. We always knew drunk people were stupid but come on. They’re all supposed to be in college. Maybe they’re too young? And the Wii is like an old Floppy disk for them? What are they gonna smoke next? Surely an iPod.

Probably.

Are Your Medical Marijuana Products Covered By Insurance?

As support climbs for legal marijuana, and more and more patients turn to medical weed to help relieve painful symptoms, there is one huge roadblock that doesn’t seem to be budging anytime soon: health insurance providers.

As Drug Watch notes, even though people spend up to $1,000 a month for medical marijuana, the insurance industry is still standing strong against covering cannabis, “appearing to instead hide behind federal regulations and bureaucracy.”

The FDA must approve a drug before insurers will cover it as treatment. However, the FDA says it won’t approve medical marijuana until it sees clinical studies that answer questions about effectiveness, safety and potential side effects. But it can’t get studies until the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issues a permit to researchers to purchase and experiment with pot. The researchers would then have to explain what they’re doing, why they’re doing it and how they would keep the pot secure during a clinical trial.

As unfair as it seems, insurance companies only need one excuse to deny coverage: the fact that marijuana is still illegal under federal law.

While this is not good news for anyone who relies on medical marijuana, the good news is that it’s only a matter of time before marijuana does become legal at the federal level, which will undoubtedly force insurance companies to change their actions. Until then, medical marijuana patients are on their own.

Snapshot: Everything You Need To Know About Today’s Cannabis Industry

The cannabis industry continues to be one of the most dynamic, fastest-growing sectors in the US economy. The first month of the year is not over and we’ve already had a ninth state to legalize (Vermont), a federal threat by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a call for the Veterans Administration to allow returning soldiers to use medical marijuana and a slew of other headlines.

It’s a good time to take review of where we are as a nation as the nascent industry is on the precipice of explosive growth. Henry Steele, editor-in-chief of Business Student, provides an excellent primer here.

This infographic below illustrates the tremendous advancements the industry has made and examines the potential roadblocks ahead:

Tommy Chong Thinks The XFL Will Allow Players To Use Marijuana

This week WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon announced the XFL will return. For those who might have forgot, the XFL was a short-lived professional football league full of goofy gimmicks like scandalous cheerleaders and “rules-light” play. The league lasted only one year and, as McMahon himself admitted, it was a “colossal failure.”

But now the XFL will begin anew in 2020 with teams’ rosters and management being constructed in 2019. McMahon will be the sole funding source of the league, which will not bring back the gimmicks. Instead, McMahon boasts shorter game times and an arena where players cannot have criminal records or make personal stand regarding social issues on the playing field.

Mostly, though, the league’s rules seem up for debate. Anything seems a go, which begs the question—what will XFL’s policies be on marijuana usage?

Noted comedian and cannabis activist Tommy Chong responded the league should “for sure” allow players to consume cannabis.

“They can do anything legal and if it’s legal, why not? All the sports—especially football—football has a concussion problem and marijuana affects the brain,” Chong told TMZ. “I think what will happen is when they loosen the restriction the whole will change. For the better.”

Whether McMahon will listen—or if the league will actually return for real—remains just a question. But it will be interesting to see how McMahon’s formally progressive, yet culturally conservative vision for the XFL will respond to one of the more popular ongoing social debates.

5 Ways To Clear Space On Your iPhone Without Deleting Photos & Apps

Managing storage on your iPhone is the worst. It’s annoying when you have to delete your favorite photos because your phone is full of crap, or when you try to take a perfectly timed picture and can’t because you don’t have enough storage.

If you’re looking for a sure way to keep your phone functioning properly but don’t want to delete any photos or apps, check out some of our favorite tips from Bustle.

These tips will save you tons of time while also allowing you to keep your precious bits of data:

 Stream Music

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you really need the space then make sure to only stream music. Turn off the Download switch on Spotify, or on any of your sttreaming devices, so that they don’t fill up your phone.

Delete Your Group Chats

This is probably the toughest thing to do on this list, but it’ll save you tons of space. Make sure to delete your chats once a week, or every day, depending on your storage situation. There’s no need to occupy all that space.

Save Videos In The Cloud

The cloud is there for a reason, and that’s to keep your phone up and running. Videos take tons of space on your phone, so be sure to upload them to the cloud where you can watch them on the go.

Clear Browser Data

Regularly delete your browser history and data by heading over to your Safari settings. You can clear out your cache with nothing going wrong, except maybe a slower loading time.

Delete Podcasts After Listening To Them
