Marijuana Instantly Calms This Girl With Cerebral Palsy

0

On bad days, Kara Zartler slams her fist into her face 3,000 times. Over and over, uncontrollably inflicting pain on herself. Three. Thousand. Times.

Kara, 17, suffers from cerebral palsy, and autism. By the age of 4, she exhibited self-injurious behavior and by the time she reached 6, the self-abuse became a daily occurrence. Her parents, Mark and Christy Zartler, tried everything to provide relief for their daughter, a twin whose sister is healthy.

They tried antipsychotics. enzymes and sleep aids — nothing the doctors prescribed failed to put an end to the misery. Until one day, Mark’s beer-drinking neighbor buddy threw out the idea: Why not try medical marijuana?

“We were truly at a crossroads,” Mark told The Fresh Toast. “We live in Richardson, Texas (a suburb north of Dallas) and we knew it was illegal. But we felt there was no other choice.”

$5 Billion In California Cannabis Revenue But No Place To Deposit It

Here’s some good news and bad news for California cannabis entrepreneurs. First the good news: Financial analysts estimate the state will generate $5.2 billion in cannabis-related revenue in 2018, the first year of legal recreational marijuana sales. Now the bad news: There still is no place to deposit all these billions of dollars.

Forbes reporter Julie Weed reports:

Banking is severely limited for cannabis industry businesses. As a “Schedule I” substance, cannabis is categorized to be as harmful as heroin and banks risk losing their federal charter if they work with cannabis companies. Financial institutions need to go on record with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) when they establish a relationship with a known Marijuana Related Business, and Karnes estimates that just 5% of all banks have done that. He believes that fewer than 1% of all banks in the United States are currently working with cannabis-related companies.

The lack or institutional banking exposes these businesses to the risk of operating as a cash-only enterprise. Because of the onerous and outdated laws, cannabis businesses are required to fork over extra money for safes, security guards, extensive video camera systems and other safety measures. Many companies, fearing criminal behavior, are purchasing firearms.

Forbes reports that some cannbusinesses are turning to cryptocurrencies, which have their own sets of problems.  Cryptocurrencies have a “questionable ability to pass regulatory scrutiny,” because they are so complex, according to Matt Karnes, industry analyst and managing partner of New York’s GreenWave Advisors.

Greenwave Advisors recommends that the federal government step in and resolve the issue:

Investors continue to be concerned that their interests may not only remain vulnerable to existing legal impediments, but also that they could face an additional threat if the federal government were to claim superseding law enforcement jurisdiction over state mandates.

We believe that until such time as the federal government ends prohibition or passes legislation to change existing laws that the cannabis industry will be impelled to seek out temporary solutions to facilitate banking transactions. It is hoped that some of these work-arounds will be suited for longer term viability and will (or continue to) stand the tests of regulatory scrutiny.

Accordingly, there will remain some level of ambiguity as to whether a true cannabis banking solution exists in the marketplace today. There is no one answer and we think there will continue to be a patchwork of alternative offerings.

Graphic Ad Campaign Warns Of The Dangers Of Driving High

As Canada prepares for federal marijuana legalization next summer, public service advertisements are being produced to warn citizens of one of the biggest concerns of the bold new national policy: Driving while high.

In an effort to address the issue, auto safety group R.I.D.E. Checks is launching an effective ad campaign with agency BBDO Toronto.

“Unlike driving drunk, there isn’t yet a stigma around driving high,” BBDO Creative Chief Denise Rossetto told AdWeek. “In fact, a lot of users we spoke to actually believe they’re better drivers when they’re high. So, we knew we had to do something to change public perception.”

The unique campaign, first reported by AdWeek, introduces three new strains of marijuana and describes the possible repercussions of  consuming while driving:

• Kourtroom Kush promises “an emotional joyride that doesn’t end well. This first-time offender conjures up feelings of regret, shame and guilt, the same emotions as someone who’s just been charged with impaired driving.”

• Slammer Time “packs a potent punch, often inducing feelings of remorse, paranoia and isolation from the outside world. The same feelings as someone who’s been sentenced to life in prison for killing another driver or pedestrian.”

• White Whiplash “starts mellow then hits you hard. This bitter bold bud has been known to strike the perfect balance of misery and devastation. A similar outcome to some suffering from the pain of an auto accident injury.”

As for campaign inspiration, “the idea came from the fact that today there’s a strain for anything—chilling on the couch, studying for an exam,” Rossetto told AdWeek. “We decided to create thee more that remind you to stay safe.”

More than one-third of Canadian traffic deaths are linked to alcohol, the worst drunk-driving record of any high-income nation. (The United States is second.) Clearly, driving while impaired is a serious issue in North America. These ads may help spread the word on the idiocy of getting behind the wheel after consuming cannabis.

Gossip: Jay-Z Finally Admitted He Cheated On Beyoncé; Meghan Markle Was Making Ina Garten’s Chicken Recipe When Harry Proposed

Jay-Z discussed psychotherapy, that’s when he made his admission of “infidelity.”

You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can’t connect,” he told executive editor Dean Baquet. “In my case, like it’s, it’s deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity.”

Both Jay-Z and his wife have seemingly addressed their marital ups and downs via song.

In Beyoncé’s track “Sorry” in 2016, she referenced “Becky with the good hair,” a phrase that’s been used to describe the other woman.

Then this past summer, Jay-Z in his track “4:44” alluded to cheating.

“I apologize often womanize. Took for my child to be born. See through a woman’s eyes. Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles. Took me too long for this song, I don’t deserve you,” according to Jay-Z’s lyrics.

Meghan Markle Was Making Ina Garten’s Chicken Recipe When Harry Proposed

The best part of People’s coverage is the fact that they hunted down Ina Garten, and now Ina is taking credit for Meghan and Harry’s engagement.

If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, Meghan Markle has the perfect recipe! After revealing that Prince Harry got down on one knee to propose while the couple was at home making roast chicken, the origin of the dish has now come to light — and it’s one of Meghan’s go-to recipes.

“Congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan! I always knew roast chicken had magic powers!! I’m so happy for both of you!” Ina Garten, celebrity chef and host of the Barefoot Contessa on the Food Network, tweeted on Tuesday. Garten couldn’t be more pleased that her recipe is now part of the royal couple’s love story.

“I thought it was so great because it shows that everyone is happy to have something simple, and really good,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s nourishing and I love that they were cooking it together. It wasn’t some fancy meal. He did it over a home-cooked meal and a simple roast chicken, which is frankly what everybody wants.”

Garten says she’s not surprised her delicious roast chicken won over Harry. “I think people feel really taken care of when you make a roast chicken,” she says. “They feel really nourished both mentally and physically, and it just seemed like a really sweet moment. I thought that was wonderful. Who knew if you make my chicken you could end up marrying a prince? An adorable prince at that!”

Colorado Senator Wants To Lower Tax For Marijuana Businesses

Senator Cory Gardner (R) Colorado has authored and attached two cannabis amendments to a Republican tax bill being voted on this week. Back in the ’80s, a provision known as 280E was enacted, making sure that cannabis businesses paid much higher taxes than in other industries.

Originally the provision had the best of intentions; according to Forbes it was meant to stop drug cartels from buying expensive toys, like yachts and private islands with their drug money. Times have changed, however, and its high time that amendments like the ones Gardner introduced were given credence.

The amendments focus on taxes and do things like allow cannabusinesses to deduct normal expenses from their taxes, just like any other businesses in separate industries.

The first amendment deals with cannabusinesses qualifying for the amendment and what it entails by following state laws. Inserting an all-important period before the words, “unless such trade or business consists of marijuana sales conducted in compliance with State law.”

The second amendment is much longer and revolves around requiring that state legal cannabusinesses fulfill a certain definition of “properly regulated.” It also tackles trafficking and excludes cannabis from the ominous word.

In it, the second requirement is this:

“No cannabis or cannabis-derived materials owned by the trade or business are sold, exchanged, provided free of charge, gifted, donated, sampled, embedded in the sale of another item, embedded within the provision of a service, or otherwise transferred in a manner that does not give rise to cannabis related income.

Meaning no more dispensary freebies, giveaways or sample days. But before judging an amendment by its paragraph, remember that this is an overall good thing for the marijuana industry. Being able to file taxes by complying with state laws seems like a very fair trade.

In a press release about the bill, Gardner said, “Our current tax code puts thousands of legal marijuana businesses throughout Colorado at a disadvantage by treating them differently than other businesses across the state. Coloradans made their voices heard in 2012 when they legalized marijuana and it’s time for the federal government to allow Colorado businesses to compete. This commonsense, bipartisan bill will allow small businesses in Colorado and other states that have legal marijuana businesses to grow their operations, create jobs, and boost the economy.”

Good Morning: 5 Types Of Marijuana Better Than Coffee

While coffee, for many people, is the only reason to get up in the morning, liquid caffeine isn’t the favorite awakening potion for everyone. Sometimes, even the hardcore coffee drinkers need a break. Here are 5 strains of cannabis that will inject you with a hit of energy and focus when you need it most.

Cannatonic

The hybrid strain was specifically bred to have high CBD and lower THC levels. These dense buds have a fruity aroma and exhale. Consumers might experience a slight head rush, but overall it’s uplifting and calming. It will also level off anxiety and spark your appetite and energy.

Jack Herer

This sativa-dominant strain is named after the cannabis activist and is one of the most well-known, classic strains. Legendary smoothness. mild, sweet tasting that promotes a cerebral high. It’ll leave you mellow, but energized and will help you zone in on your daily tasks and might even spark some creativity.

Raspberry Cough

This sativa-heavy strain has a fruity sweetness to it, but also a pungent skunkiness and funky taste. It’ll leave you with a solid body buzz. And while you probably won’t feel too energetic, you’ll feel cheerful and maybe even a little silly. It’ll set the mood for your day, which makes it great for wake and bake. You’ll be productive, alert and clear-headed. Great for anxiety as well.

Sour Diesel

Described as having a “sour, limey flavor,” these buds have an intense pungent skunky smell and contain a wide range of high content THC strains, leaving you with a clear and happy head high. You’ll be relaxed, calm and sufficiently stoned.

Poll: Drivers Think Texting Is More Dangerous Than Marijuana

What’s more distracting: Driving while texting or driving while under the influence of marijuana? According to a new poll, most Americans believe the correct answer is texting.

The survey, released earlier this week, polled more than 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI). The results reveal that more Americans consider using social media (99 percent) and texting (98 percent) on a cell phone to be dangerous while driving than being under the influence of marijuana (91 percent).

But while the vast majority of Americans (91 percent) believe driving under the influence of marijuana is dangerous and a similar percentage (87 percent) say those who do so are a hazard to others on the road, just two in five (40 percent) believe it is contributing to more motor vehicle crashes. Distracted driving, which includes actions such as using a cell phone, talking to passengers, eating and adjusting the radio, tops the list as the number one perceived contributor (92 percent) to the increase in crashes across the country.

“Driving under the influence of marijuana is extremely dangerous,” said Robert Gordon, senior vice president, PCI.  “In fact, driving under the influence of marijuana should be viewed with the same risks as drunk or distracted driving. When you’re high, it can impair your judgment, motor coordination, and reaction time. We need more research, public awareness, and better public policy to reduce the dangers of marijuana-impaired driving and to make our roads less dangerous.”

According to the survey, 31 percent of parents have discussed the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana with their child, which pales in comparison to parents who have discussed:

  • Wearing a seatbelt all/most of the time (67 percent)
  • Texting while driving (60 percent)
  • Speeding while driving (54 percent)
  • Talking on cell phone while driving (50 percent)
  • Using social media while driving (40 percent)

“Parents need to discuss the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana with their teenagers,” Gordon said. “As more states liberalize their marijuana laws, it is critical that the public become more aware of the dangers of driving high. And that awareness campaign should start at home, with conversations between parents and their children about safe driving.”

Did You Know The Farmers In Italy Grow Hemp To Save Their Soil?

Taranto is a coastal port city in southern Italy known for its oil refineries, steel plants and its pollution. Soon, farmers hope, the town that declared bankruptcy in 2006 will be known for a cannabis. Industrial hemp, to be precise.

The city, considered the third most polluted city in the world, is placing its hopes on hemp in order to to remove contaminants from the soil. That’s right: Taranto will be utilizing the properties of the hemp plant as an environmental measure.

According to a CBS News report, the city wants to replace industrial plants with another kind of plant: Hemp.

“For generations, our family produced ricotta and meat,” Vincenzo Fornaro told CBS News. But, according to the report, contaminants spewing from a local massive steel plant contaminated the grazing land. All grazing is banned within 12 miles of the ILVA steel plant after the Italian government declared the area an environmental risk area.

In order to save the environment — and the livelihood of the local citizens — hemp has been introduced to clean up the land.

From the CBS report:

The science is called phytoremediation — a process where contaminants are absorbed by the fast-growing roots of the cannabis plant which stores or, in some cases, transforms toxins into a harmless substance.

This is certainly not the first time the plant has been used to in environmental disasters. Following the Chernobyl nuclear accident, hemp was farmed to remove radioactive strontium and cesium.

Industrial hemp contains trace amounts — less than 1 percent – of THC, the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana. That infinitesimal amount of THC  has no narcotic effect. Despite this fact, hemp remains a Schedule I controlled substance under the Federal Controlled Substances Act.

But the federal government has allowed 17 states test growing hemp, according to the National Hemp Association. More than 30 countries, including China, Canada and most of Europe, farm hemp for industrial use.

If you’re looking to shave for the beach or for somewhere where you don’t need a very close shave, Francis recommends shaving with the hair growth, which will have a gentler effect on your skin.

Make Sure Your Razor Is Sharp
