5 Uses For Hemp Besides CBD Oil

0

The fibrous stalks of the hemp plant have countless uses and the seeds are packed with protein. Here are 5 of the top ways that it can be utilized.

Sure, CBD oil is all the rage — especially now that hemp production is legal in the U.S. — but there’s a lot more to (quite possibly) the world’s most versatile plant than the flowers.

CBD cannot be found in the seeds or stalks of the hemp plant, except in very small amounts from incidental residue during growing and harvest. And to be considered hemp, the plant’s flowers must be under a very small percentage of THC.

Flowers aside, however, there is much to love and respect. The fibrous stalks have countless uses and the seeds are packed with protein. Here are 5 of the top uses for hemp  outside of tinctures, gummies and salves.

Paper

We  could drastically cut back on deforestation if hemp was used to make paper instead of trees. An acre of hemp produces as much paper as four acres of trees every year, it can be grown multiple times, over and over, on the same plot of land. Now that hemp is legal to grow in the U.S. it would be a shame to not utilize this oxygen producing power plant.

Hempcrete

Made with woody hemp hurds which are harvested from the stalks of hemp plants, hempcrete is a strong, insulating and moisture regulating material used for both construction and insulation. Because it is lighter weight than other lime based building materials, and for its other positive traits, it is gaining popularity around the world. France has been using hempcrete since the ‘90’s and its use increases with each passing year.

Stronger Than Steel

There are two strength measurements when it comes to materials, that is mend and bend and crack and break. Hemp can withstand around twice the weight of steel before it cracks and breaks as well as mending and bending six times better. Fields of hemp are good for the soil, excellent for the environment and provide so much extra market versatility.

Nutrition

Shelled hemp seeds are an excellent way to introduce more plant protein and Omega fatty acids into your diet. Sprinkle them on cereal, mix them into salads, add them to your smoothies or just munch on the healthy, nutty little treats. They’re considered a superfood and add a nice touch to countless dishes.

Clothing And Other Fabrics

Hemp fabric has come a long way in the last century and is now just as soft and even more durable than cotton. Plus, hemp has natural pesticides and anti-fungal properties and don’t require pesticides or other chemicals, whereas cotton is typically grown with loads of pesticides. Hemp clothing as a domestic product could go as mainstream as cannabis itself, giving a boost to farmers fiscally and otherwise across the country.

Marijuana Does Not Make You Dumber, According to Science

0

A new twins study found that marijuana use does not lower your ability to complete executive cognitive functioning.

Sorry, Tucker Carlson. New research refutes your belief that Democrats support marijuana legalization because they want to dumb-down America. A recent twin study found little support that cannabis use causes consumers to experience a decline in cognitive functions. Translation? Marijuana does not make you dumber.

Published in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal, the study analyzed twins from more than 400 families to better understand how marijuana use might affect cognition. They asked the twin pairs, over 800 individuals total, to then submit a couple questionnaires, including whether or not they used marijuana.

Unlike previous studies, researchers were not focused on qualifying participants IQ scores, or whether marijuana users had lower IQ scores than general populations, though subjects did relay that information. What they focused on was something called “executive functioning,” a term to describe how you consciously think through basic problem solving and mentally juggle multiple tasks at once.

To test executive functioning, scientists administered two different mental aptitude tests—the Raven-S test, which quantified non-verbal intelligence scores, and the Weschler test, which measures overall intelligence. Scientists then compared the results, both between twins where both individuals smoked marijuana, and also twins where one individual consumed cannabis and the other did not.

RELATED: Debunking 6 Popular Myths About Today’s Marijuana

“We found little support for a potential causal effect of cannabis use on cognition, consistent with previous twin studies,” the study’s authors wrote. “Results suggest that cannabis use may not cause decline in cognitive ability among a normative sample of cannabis users.”

There was one caveat, however. When participants had started using marijuana frequently by the age of 17, their overall test scores dropped with regards to executive functioning once they reached age 23. While more research is necessary to better understand this result, researchers wrote, there remains possible other variable for this finding.

CBD Might Help Treat Seizures Triggered By Rare Genetic Disorder

A preliminary study continues to support evidence that CBD can be used as an alternative method to treat different kinds of seizures.

CBD’s positive effects on seizures has been supported by several different studies, and stands as the most definitive medicinal benefit of the compound. A new study found that CBD might also help with hard-to-treat seizures produced by a rare genetic disorder.

The disease, called tuberous sclerosis complex, is a genetic condition that affects about 1 in 6,000 people, producing noncancerous tumors that grow throughout the body. In 90% of patients, this causes seizures that are very hard to treat, resistant to the standard drugs used in these kinds of situations.

The study in question took 224 patients with the condition from different countries and provided them with Epidiolex, a liquid medication that contains purified CBD and that has FDA approval for treating seizures caused by Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

RELATED: This Is How Marijuana Treats Seizures

A large percentage of these patients were under the age of 11 and had already tried different anti-seizure medications that they’d dropped due to negative side effects or because they didn’t provide the necessary relief.

Patients were split up randomly in three groups: one group received 25mg of Epidiolex, another received 50mg and the last only took a placebo. Patients who were taking anti-seizure drugs before the study continued to take them in addition to the Epidiolex.

The study found that over a period of 16 weeks patients who consumed 50mg of Epidiolex a day were more likely to see an improvement. When compared to the placebo group, the 50mg group’s seizures dropped by 50 percent.

“CBD works by a novel mechanism, but we don’t know exactly what it is,” said Dr. Elizabeth Thiele, director of pediatric epilepsy at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She clarifies that CBD didn’t work for all patients and that, although promising, results wouldn’t likely alter the way in which these patients were treated.

More research is needed in order to know how Epidiolex works over time and whether patients build up a tolerance for it. “Sometimes patients may habituate to a medication while others may demonstrate improved efficacy over time,” said Dr. William Gaillard, professor of pediatrics at George Washington University.

The study is scheduled for review at this year’s American Epilepsy Society annual meeting. If it’s approved, it will be published in a peer reviewed journal.

Which Does Beyoncé Like More: Whales Or Marijuana

Beyoncé may or may not have been high during a 2001 interview where she confessed her adoration for whales.

In 2001, members of Destiny’s Child, including Beyoncé Knowles Carter, gave an iconic interview that suggests Queen Bey may have been high on weed at the time. It was a simple enough question from Amsterdam-based outlet Toazted: If you could be any animal, what would you choose?

Journalists ask these kind of goofy questions all the time. It’s a trick to have celebrities say something revealing about themselves while eschewing any personal details of their lives. What was noticeable instead was how serious and contemplative Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams were in considering the query. So serious, in fact, Rowland didn’t have an answer at first.

While munching on something and appearing sleepy (hint hint), Beyonce interjected with a passionate response.

“I know what I’d be. A whale,” she said. When asked why, she added, “I love whales. I’ve loved whales since I was a little girl.”

“She wants to touch one one day,” Michelle Williams jumped in to provide further context. Later, Williams said she’d like to be a black panther “because when they step, they step better than I do.”

If all this reminds you of getting high in college dorm rooms and talking nonsense, you’re not alone. For years, many, including the Beyhive, assumed Destiny’s Child was stoned as hell while giving this interview. They were after all in Amsterdam.

But in a new interview with Elle Canada, Queen Bey finally dismissed the long-gestating rumors. Instead of a traditional cover profile, Elle Canada had Beyoncé answer questions submitted by her fans. Wouldn’t you know it someone asked about if you could be an animal for a day, would you still be a whale?

“I still love whales. And I love being in the ocean. And that video was after a 16-hour press day,” Beyoncé responded. “Not marijuana!!”

There you have it. Beyoncé just loves whales. As the saying goes, though, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend. Sorry Bey, but we’re going to keep on believing the legend on this one.

Can Taking CBD Make It Easier To Digest Political News?

Some studies indicate that CBD has a positive interaction with the serotonin receptors in the brain without any adverse side effects.

The ongoing news cycle can temp one to take the last countercultural guru Timothy Leary’s advice and “turn on, tune in, and drop out.” However, for those who wish to remain engaged in the world but find the constant onslaught of news stories hard to consume, CBD can help one to have a more balanced outlook.

As Steven Phan, co-founder of New York’s CBD retail hub Come Back Daily, observes:

“The cannabis plant is filled with hundreds of different compounds, one being Cannabidiol, or CBD, that’s non psychoactive and has a number of possible uses. It can help with stress, pain, and even sleep problems. From politics and combating the news to dealing with issues in our personal and professional lives, CBD can have a calming effect and can balance your homeostasis which is important for overall wellness.”

Phan’s observations are backed by medical research. Initial results of some studies into CBD and depression and anxiety indicate that CBD appears to have a positive interaction with the serotonin receptors in the brain without any adverse side effects. As receptors impact a range of bodily functions such as a person’s emotional state, keeping one’s serotonin levels balanced can help one achieve a state of mental equilibrium.

Also, CBD can help one calm and uplift one’s mind when one experiences information overload and cannot focus. And as CBD does not have the psychoactive properties found in THC, one can take CBD during the day and still remain alert and fully present.

When taking CBD to deal with the daily news, start small with 5mg to 10mg doses, adding another similar dose in an hour. Continue with these small doses throughout the day, adjusting as needed until find the right dosage and schedule that achieves the desired results. Remember the goal is to feel stabilized not stoned.

Then at night, take some CBD before bed which can help one turn off the news and get a full night’s sleep. CBD Products designed to encourage sleep often contain melatonin and other natural sleep agents so one can slow down one’s mind and get a solid night’s sleep without the need for pharmaceuticals.

Some CBD products are mixed with specific terpenes that create an entourage effect which magnify the therapeutic benefits of the plant’s individual components—so that the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts. Hence, one can find CBD products designed for those looking for a specific effect such as focus, balance, revive, and relax.

Vaping Illness Could Be The Best Thing To Happen To Marijuana Movement

0

This health epidemic is a direct result of the federal government’s willingness to take a hands-off approach to marijuana.

The threat of having one’s lungs fail them as a result of using vaping devices to consume marijuana may seem like a storyline to come out of the Hollywood horror scene, but the reality is that black market cannabis vaporizers, and even some on the legal front, are putting people in a bad way.

Some of the latest reports show that more than 80% of the cannabis vapes being sold on the street are knock-offs, contributing to an uprising in a mysterious illness that has put people on life-support and in early graves. But the situation is becoming more serious with each passing day.

Now, cannabis vapes being sold in the legal sector are supposedly making people sick, as well. Warnings from both the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Oregon Health Authority indicates that this vaping-related illness has been linked to products sold in legal dispensaries. And poison products are something that cannabis consumers are not supposed to have to worry about in a taxed and regulated regime.

RELATED: Support For Marijuana Legalization Reaches All-Time High Despite Vaping Illness

However, somewhere along the way, the cannabis trade’s willingness to become the next billion dollar inebriation market has allowed for some shifty characters to enter the game. And sadly, more people are dropping dead as a result.

the benefits and potential downsides of vaping according to research

There have been around 50 vaping-related deaths in 25 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is conceivable, too, that we could see these casualties grow into the new year.

But this health epidemic is a direct result of the federal government’s willingness to take a hands-off approach to marijuana. So far, 11 states have legalized the leaf for recreational use, with more expected to join in 2020. Yet, in spite of all of the momentum that the country has experienced concerning this issue — somewhere around 66 percent of Americans support it — the boys and girls of Congress still aren’t giving weed a fair shake on Capitol Hill. The most we have seen from them is some marijuana bills (SAFE Act & MORE Act) getting some support in the House. But the Senate still remains seemingly hell-bent on maintaining prohibition for all time.

RELATED: Marijuana Flavoring Additives Could Be Cause Of Vaping Illness

Still, Congress may not be able to ignore the vaping crisis much longer. Although the argument for prohibition is that it is in the best interest of public health and safety, that way of thinking is turning out to be less accurate with each passing day. Just like when tainted booze was killing thousands of people every year during alcohol prohibition, we are watching history repeat itself with marijuana.

Sure, today’s numbers aren’t quite as tragic as they were back then, but that could change at any given moment. If it does, federal lawmakers could be forced to step in, just like they did decades ago to help curb alcohol-related health incidents, and legalize marijuana at the national level.

Forcing cannabis products to be regulated under the same federal controls as alcohol and tobacco is really the best method for putting the black market out of commission. But further, it is the only way to prevent shoddy, borderline criminal cannabis companies from continuing to contribute to the scourge.

And while it is terrible that so many people are enduring health issues and loss due to this problem, it may be what ends up getting marijuana legalized in the United States once and for all. The question is will some form of action take place ahead of the 2020 election, or is it going to be up to the next wave of Congressional members to give their consideration?

5 Ways To Relieve Holiday Stress

0

The holidays are a stressful and busy time for many of us. Here’s how you can make things a little easier on yourself.

The holidays are one of the most low-key stressful times of the year. Yeah, yeah, we all love to talk about the wonders of family and eggnog and eating delicious food, but we forget that it’s a time filled with stressors like expenses, traveling in crap airports and dramatic family reunions. The holidays are great and all, but if you’re struck with anxiety when just looking at your “to do” list, you’re certainly not alone.

Making matters worse is the fact that we’re so busy during the month that we forget about basic habits that keep us healthy and sane. Working out, having a set sleeping and waking routine, the comfort of your own bed — all of this is altered during the holidays and can greatly affect just about anyone.

Here are 5 tips that can help you relieve holiday stress (and stressful situations in general) and keep your cool during this crazy time of year.

Try to ignore your family’s most annoying traits

If someone in your family is trying to get you to talk politics with them or asking you relentless questions about your job and relationships, or forcing you to have a bite of that cake you want to steer clear from, take a deep breath. They’re most likely trying to show that they love you or wanting to catch up with you. Have some patience for these kinds of behavior and understand that the holidays bring out different behaviors in people.

Take breaks to calm down

In the mornings when you wake up or whenever you feel like you’re getting overwhelmed, take a minute to yourself in private and take some deep breaths. Use these 2 or 5 minutes to calm down, be with yourself and gain some perspective. These breathing techniques can also be practiced when traveling in a packed airport, buying groceries, speaking with annoying relatives, you name it.

Move around

Exercise is one of the best ways to promote mental health during any time period in your life, especially a stressful one. Try to go for runs as a group activity so you can still share with your friends and family, or try to walk around as best as you can. These moments also allow for introspection and can act as a much needed break from everything holiday related.

Try to eat mostly real foods

It’s easy to live on sweets during the holidays, but try to focus on real foods as best as you can. While it’s important to maintain a healthy balance of enjoyment and health during the holidays, consuming all of those processed sweets will affect your happiness, lead to more fatigue and an even harder time adapting to your routine once the holidays are over.

Ask for help

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or have too many things to get done in a short span of time, talk to someone. If you need help decorating the tree or doing Christmas shopping there’s no need for you to do that all on your own. Ask a friend or close person to join you on these tasks, making them feel lighter and much more fun.

This Week’s Music: Liam Payne, Harry Styles And Sassy 009

This week’s music features former One Direction band members Harry Styles, Liam Payne and a collaboration between SASSY 009 and Clairo.

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s new releases are a dream for One Direction fans, featuring new tracks from Liam Payne and Harry Styles. There’s also a collaboration between SASSY 009 and Clairo. Have a listen.

Pop

Liam Payne – Live Forever

Unlike his former One Direction band mates, Liam Payne is stagnant. While Zayn went out of his way to prove that he’s an adult who has sex, singing about it in every song, his range and charisma allows for some forgiveness; Niall Horan is singing cheesy rock; Harry Styles is making the best music out of all, putting out a rock album and now a pop album, all boasting his personality and flair. But Liam Payne is singing as if this were a David Guetta song from 2009, showing no evolution in vocals or sound.

Harry Styles – Adore You

RELATED: This Week’s Music: Bad Bunny, Maggie Rogers And The Weeknd

There’s nothing revolutionary about “Adore You.” The music and lyrics are simple, with standard romantic lines like “I’d walk through fire for you,” and “just let me adore you.” Still, the song, supported by Styles’ rock vocals, its easy arrangements of guitars and percussion, and spot on back up voice work, sounds surprisingly well. It’s smooth and cohesive. It also doesn’t hurt that the music video is narrated by Rosalia, because that’s just showing off.

Indie

SASSY 009 & Clairo – Lara

“Lara” starts off great. With an edgy and brittle sound, the music rises and your senses are flooded with a variety of lovely arrangements. But once the first chorus is over the inventiveness is off and it’s just more of the same. It’s not a bad song, but Clairo’s solo work has more depth and shine.

5 Jobs Where Free Marijuana Is A Frequent Bonus

Tourists leaving legal states are sometimes stuck with extra weed. That’s good news if you’re an Uber or taxi driver.

What do Uber drivers, hotel maids and comedians have in common? These occupations are ideal if you are looking to score some free marijuana. And if you live in a state that allows for legal adult recreational consumption, even better.

Although data is sparse, stories out of Colorado and Washington have suggested that tourists leaving town are sometimes stuck with extra weed. Since it is a federal crime to travel with cannabis across state lines, most travelers will either toss their remaining stash or, better yet, find a local cannabis consumer who could use it.

Here is a partial list of occupations that have the added bonus of possible herbal gifts:

Performing Artists

If you are a comedian or a musician — or stage hand at an arena or club — you are sure to get an offer of a smokeout after your performance. If you perform in a legal recreational state, the chances are even higher.

Of course, this is nothing new … performers have been winding down with cannabis after a show since Louis Armstrong.

Hotel Cleaning Staff

Once again, company policy prohibits employees from taking a Schedule I drug from someone else. But maids often are the beneficiaries of stuff hotel guests can’t take home with them.

Ski Resort Workers

Is there a better job in the world than a ski resort employee in the Colorado? Ski in Rocky Mountain powder and get offers of free weed every day.

You’re up in the mountains. There are plenty of hideaways to enjoy a toke or two. And the price is right.

Ride Sharing

Uber, Lyft or taxi cab drivers are often offered the passenger’s leftover stash on the way to the airport. It’s the same with airport shuttle drivers or valet parking lot attendants.

In Colorado, rental car employees have reported a dramatic upswing in cannabis left in cars. Clearly, company policies do not allow for this type of transaction, but it happens.

Food Delivery

Cannabis consumers love the pizza delivery driver. In Washington, some pizza delivery workers have reported getting a joint or  bud as an extra tip from regular, friendly customers.
