What We Know About Cannabis And Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a debilitating condition that’s currently incurable. Many women have turned to cannabis in hopes of finding some relief.

Like most things pertaining to a woman’s menstrual cycle, endometriosis is a highly misunderstood condition. Affecting an estimated 200 million women worldwide and 1 out of 10 women in the U.S., this condition is known for being highly uncomfortable, painful, and difficult to treat and diagnose.

While its origins are unknown and there’s no way of curing it, some hope that with scientific support marijuana could become a reliable source of pain relief.

Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrium — the tissue that coats the inside of the uterus — makes its way outside of the womb. This tissue can latch on to any of the female reproductive organs and even to the intestines, appendix and bowels. Since this tissue is affected by hormones and women’s menstrual cycles, it often causes inflammation and tremendous amounts of pain.

While there’s basically no scientific research out there that looks into the connection between marijuana and period pain, there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence that finds a correlation, with many well regarded companies releasing bath salts, suppositories, creams and more with the purpose of treating menstrual cramps.

Doctors aren’t likely to list medical marijuana products for people suffering from endometriosis, but that doesn’t stop women from trying out new things, especially when the condition that affects them is so debilitating.

According to Foria, a well regarded cannabis company with a focus on sexual health, certain cannabinoids could help manage some of the symptoms of endometriosis. There have been connections found between the use of cannabinoids and the prevention of proliferation of cells, the prevention of cell migration and the desensitization of nerves that transmit pain.

“Whether you’re already using cannabinoids for your endometriosis, or you’re considering an experiment with them, we highly recommend reading on to learn about the effects of THC & CBD on endometriosis,” explains the site. “One reason scientists are enthusiastic about these compounds is the recent discovery that the body’s natural endocannabinoid system is integral to the healthy functioning of the female reproductive tract.”

The current options for the treatment of endometriosis are only there for managing the condition, with there being no cure. They include pain medication and surgery, with the former often providing no effective relief and the latter acting as a temporary patch at best and as a life altering body change at worst.

The more you dive into endometriosis, the more you realize that there’s a big gap of knowledge for such a serious condition. Research needs to be conducted and this condition needs to be understood in order to address it properly. In the meantime, at least there’s cannabis.

There’s no better pick-me-up than the one you get when you see a clip of an animal acting silly, which is why we’ve compiled this weekly column. These short videos feature all sorts of animals and can provide that much needed mid-week rush of endorphins, anywhere at any time.

This week’s cute animals include some cats, a drama queen dog, another dog that’s in deep need of a back scratcher and a baby cow. Have a look!

The loudest cat

Cats are normally alert and cool, but this guy can barely keep its eyes open. There’s also those loud breaths; if you close your eyes its almost as if you’re hearing the recording of a pug.

A very dramatic dog

Dogs can be very dramatic, especially when it comes to clipping their nails. I didn’t realize this was a subgenre of dog videos, but apparently, there’s plenty of dogs out there who pretend to faint when approached by a nail clipper.

Who Wins From Marijuana Taxes? It’s Not Always Who You Think

States that have had a legal marijuana marketplace framework in place the longest, such as Washington and Colorado, have fared better than their pot counterparts, such as Oregon.

For states grappling with balancing their budgets, legal and taxed marijuana has a certain appeal. Cannabis is popular, and the public, tokers and non-tokers alike are generally okay with some form of a marijuana tax.

In fact, as of this writing, nine U.S. states collect some form of pot tax, with Michigan joining Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington in taking a cut of the pot pie.

For some states, the promise of shored up budgets and funding of social programs has been realized. For others, it’s been a mixed bag, with lower than projected revenues. And in at least one state, it has created an unintended windfall for some cannapreneurs.

Every state taxes weed differently. California, Nevada, and Colorado impose taxes and levies on the wholesale and retail level. Additionally, weed is also subject to state sales tax and municipalities can also levy an additional local tax on sales within their jurisdiction. Most cannabis taxation programs are modeled after so-called “sin taxes,” revenue generated through the taxation of products or behavior deemed tolerable to some extent but still considered generally a negative on society (i.e. alcohol, tobacco, and gambling).

RELATED: How High Are Cannabis Taxes In Your State?

Marijuana trailblazers Colorado and Washington have been collecting revenue from cannabis sales the longest, since 2014, and their state capitols have generally been pleased with the results of legal and taxed pot sales. Through November of this year, Colorado has collected over $227 million in revenue from taxes levied on marijuana in 2019, although this figure only accounts for what goes into state coffers. In fact, investigations by the Denver Post estimate that in 2018, about $80 million were collected in local-level taxes, money that stayed in those communities and funded infrastructure projects and college scholarships for low-income students.

The picture is less rosy in other states such as Oregon, where the $111 million in taxes collected at the state and local level — 40% of which is legally allocated to schools — is a drop in the state revenue’s bucket, amounting to about 1% of the amount that personal income taxes bring in, according to the Oregon Center for Public Policy. While the revenue is certainly nothing to sneeze at, it also isn’t the windfall many perhaps hoped.

RELATED: California Raises Cannabis Business Taxes, Legal Operators Worry It Will Drive Illicit Market Growth

In California, where taxed recreational sales started in 2018, it appears so far that the real winners have been black-market players taking advantage of the early shortfalls in the legislated marketplace to undercut legitimate cannabis businesses. Factors such as a 77% surcharge in taxes on cannabis, local governments having the power to ban marijuana business, as well as a lack of enforcement, continue to cause headwinds for the Golden State’s legal market.

Analysts that track California marijuana sales project the legitimate market to grow to $7.2 billion by 2024, with the parallel black market growing to $6.4 billion. The thriving black market, allowed unchecked, not only deprives the state of anticipated revenue, it allows dangerous counterfeit cannabis to land in the hands of otherwise unsuspecting consumers, whether it be poorly made vape pens delivering heavy metals and other toxins, or pesticide-laced flower labeled with doctored lab results.

It is perhaps unsurprising that states that have had a legal marijuana marketplace framework in place the longest, such as Washington and Colorado, have fared better than their pot counterparts, such as Oregon. The bifurcated federal/state legal status of cannabis and constantly evolving attitudes towards recreational weed have complicated the task of reaping the most from what should be, on paper, a taxation slam dunk.

Some states, such as California, are learning that striking a balance between regulation, enforcement, and legislation, especially in such a large market, is tricky, and the consequences of getting it wrong include nurturing an illicit market that puts consumers at risk and legit players at a competitive disadvantage.

The Best Kinds Of Stashes For Discreet Marijuana Use

0

These storage containers are safe, discreet and make for way better options than a Ziploc bag in a drawer.

After you pass a certain age it’s just not okay to store your weed in your sock drawer anymore. There’s no need for your clothes to smell like weed and for your weed to be treated as if you were 16 and still living with your parents.

Luckily, the slow acceptance of marijuana has made a lot of companies come up with inventive devices that are capable of storing marijuana, preventing smells from leaking, preserving your expensive purchase and also being really discreet. Whether you’re 20 or 40, it’s always best for your weed to reside in a place that makes it hard to fall into the wrong hands. You want your marijuana stash to be discreet but also respectable and safe.

Here are 4 of the best kinds of marijuana storage options according to all of your needs:

Small and portable

If you’re looking for a small storage space that’s comfortable, prevents smells from leaking and is also discreet, you’re in luck, because there’s hundreds of these products, ranging from the very cheap to something a little more expensive. Stash Jars by SimpleChoice are sleek, small, odor proof, air tight and are capable of withholding falls and hits. They also provide sun protection, eliminating your concern over having to store your container in a dark and musty place.

If you’re looking for something larger and are willing to pay a little more, there’s also Masterdam Jars, which come in different sizes and possess the same capabilities of the Stash Jars. They’re also very cute.

The most discreet

If you have roommates or are visiting your parents and need your weed stash to look like something other than a weed stash, there’s also options even if they’re not as foolproof as the ones presented above. There’s a hair brush with a small safe that can be used to store whatever you want (weed) and that also brushes your hair. That’s a plus. Then there’s a fake Speed Stick deodorant with a hidden safe where you can store your stuff. It has real deodorant on top, but I wouldn’t use it.

Very respectable

If you’re planning of wowing your marijuana-smoking guests, there are plenty of options for you. Most of these are expensive and sleek, containing room for storing your joints, vapes, grinders, lighters, and all kinds of devices that you’ve accumulated over the years. There’s the new KEEP, a marijuana safe that looks discreet, preserves your products and has a biometric lock that can be connected to your smartphone. It’s a smart marijuana safe. Why so much security? I don’t know, you tell me.

If you’re into something a bit more retro, there’s this vintage style stash box that’s equipped with a combo lock. It looks like somewhere where cigars are stored and is roomy and very pretty.

For parents

Parents who smoke weed need something that’s discreet, hard to access and that can take a few blows. The best option, even if it’s not the most attractive, is STASHLOGIX Silverton bag, which comes in three sizes and has a zipper lock combination that makes it really hard to access if you’re not a child or if you’re drunk. The device is water proof, traps odors and is super resistant.

There’s also Ozchin’s smell proof bag, which also comes with a combination lock. It’s very boring looking so it’s doubtful kids will want to play with it or even give it a second look.

Can CBD Be Used To Enhance Sex

High-CBD marijuana strains are less likely to springboard the kind of animalistic sex that most people are after than those found in THC.

Marijuana has been known to enhance the sex lives of couples who consume the herb before heading into the bedroom. But not every component of the cannabis plant is a powerful aphrodisiac.

While the primary psychoactive compound known as THC has left more than its fair share of young, enthusiastic lovers quivering from head to toe, CBD, the non-intoxicating part of the plant, does not come with the same Earth-shattering results. In fact, using CBD in hopes of conjuring up the Gods of mind-blowing orgasms is about as effective as rubbing it all over your genitalia in hopes of preventing an STD.

Although CBD has the reputation these days for its vast therapeutic reach, the fact of the matter remains: High-CBD marijuana strains are less likely to springboard the kind of animalistic sex that most people are after than those found in THC. Andrew Mieure, a certified cannabis sommelier and owner of Top Shelf Budtending, told Leafly that he doesn’t “think CBD provides enough of a ‘mental shift’ to really impact performance negatively or positively.” You might as well toss a few cans of ginger beer in the mix.

RELATED: Marijuana As A Sexual Aid? Here’s What The Experts Say

In order to summon the beasts of belly grinding greatness, it is necessary to employ the buzzed magic of THC. This specific compound “is important because of that mental shift you experience,” Mieure said. “Whether that be loosening your mental state to be ready for sex or actually making the sex feel better physically, the mental shift is more noticeable with THC.”

Photo by Becca Tapert via Unsplash

But this does not mean that CBD is completely useless with respect to the skin-slapping activities in the boudair. The cannabinoid does, in fact, play an import role in keeping the sex from falling apart. Too much THC can make some people feel anxious and paranoid, both of which are side effects that have absolutely no place in even the most average of sex sessions.

Anxiety has been known to cause erectile dysfunction in men and the inability to orgasm in women. It’s kind of like trying to turn on the bathroom facet with a piece of cooked spaghetti. It doesn’t matter how big the meatballs are nobody is getting wet.

RELATED: 4 Sex Therapists Reveal The Questions They Get Asked Most

But CBD can counteract the intensity of its high producing counterpart. So, finding a strain that is a 1:1 THC:CBD ratio is probably the best course of action, Mieure advises. It will provide “a good mixture of euphoria and relaxation without too much knockout power.”

When using cannabis edibles to put your significant other in the mood for a night free of inhibitions, better try the micro-dosing method first. Mieure recommends 1-3 milligrams of THC to bring on the all-important mental shift. Any more than that in an inexperienced cannabis user and your pelvic partner could be at risk of a freak out that almost ensures that nobody has a good time. You want your little love muffin climbing the walls, but let’s make it for all the right reasons.

5 Of The Most Popular Ways To Take CBD

Here are some tips to help you navigate through several of the most popular ways to take CBD and the nuances that separate them and their effects.

With the recent rise in popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) and the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill in 2018, numerous CBD products have hit store shelves across the U.S.. The sheer quantity of CBD products now available can be overwhelming.

At the smoke shop where I work, some of the most frequent questions are about the differences between the different forms of CBD, dosages and their effects. This information is paramount when it comes to getting the most out of your CBD, so here are some tips to help you navigate through several of the most popular ways to take CBD and the nuances that separate them and their effects.

Tinctures

CBD tinctures are made by steeping cannabis flower or isolate in high-proof grain alcohol and then slightly heating the mixture over a considerable span of time until the cannabis is properly infused and the alcohol boiled off. Often, manufacturers add other oils to improve the taste of their tinctures. Tinctures are designed to be administered in small doses on account of their high potency, usually with a 1 mL dropper, and can be administered in a couple of different ways.

You can mix your CBD tincture into your food and drinks to taste, or you can take it sublingually, which means dropping it under your tongue. There is some research out there that suggests taking CBD tincture sublingually increases the bioavailability of CBD, or the proportion of CBD which enters circulation in your body and is able to produce an active effect.

Edibles

CBD edibles are food items infused with CBD. Edibles usually come in the form of gummies and other candies, but there are products out there that include CBD-infused honey, cake pops, and more. CBD edibles affect the body differently than the other forms.

RELATED: Global CBD Market Expected To Grow By 40 Percent This Year

Because ingesting CBD requires it to pass through your digestive system, the effects of CBD edibles take a little while to kick in — anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours — as opposed to tincture or vapor, which produce effects you can feel almost instantly. But, CBD edibles also come with a host of benefits. While they take longer to take effect, edibles provide longer-lasting effects than other methods like smoking or vaping because the CBD is released slowly over the time it takes your body to digest them. They are also easy to find in stores and online, make at home, dose, and take discreetly.

Flower

Unlike all of the other methods of taking CBD, CBD flower has to be smoked — you know, like the other stuff — and always contains low levels of THC, though not nearly enough for it to have any kind of psychoactive effects. In fact, the interaction between the THC and the CBD that occurs when you smoke CBD flower is what sets it apart from the other methods. When you smoke CBD flower, the CBD and the THC undergo a synergizing process known as the “Entourage Effect,” in which they work together to amplify each other’s chemistry and effects. For example, CBD amplifies THC’s pain relieving and anti-epileptic properties.

Topicals

CBD topicals are creams, ointments, balms, salves, or lotions that you apply directly to specific areas of your body, typically to areas in which you’re experiencing pain or inflammation. The CBD in CBD topicals is delivered to the body via application, and can be used to treat a number of different nerve, muscular, joint, and even skin problems.

Vape Oil

CBD vape oil is oil or liquid infused with CBD that’s designed to be heated up and turned into vapor, which you inhale. The most popular CBD vape oil options on the market largely come in the form of pre-filled cartridges, but a lot of vendors also sell bottles of CBD vape oil that you can put into your own vape mod or pen.

Vaping CBD is discrete and convenient, and allows you to feel its effects a lot quicker because the vapor you inhale into your lungs goes directly into your bloodstream. This makes it more desirable to some CBD users as opposed to the other methods. CBD vape oil also allows you to customize your dosages. Pre-filled CBD cartridges usually come with pre-set doses of CBD so you can choose your optimal dose, and you can put any amount of the vape oil you want into your vape. You can even mix CBD vape oil with other vape juice to make your own CBD vape oil concoction.

5 Tricks That Will Help You Feel More Energized

Our energy levels dictate our mood and productivity. Here’s how you can trick your body into feeling more energetic and in control.

It’s sort of a running joke how large percentages of people always claim to be tired, no matter whether they sleep eight hours or six a night. But there’s a difference between feeling tired and feeling sleepy, and it’s important to differentiate between the two if you want to see some changes in your life.

Hugh Selsick, head of the Sleep Working Group at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, spoke with The Guardian about the difference between these two feelings. Tiredness is “I’m lacking energy and concentration, I’m irritable. I’m not motivated.” Sleepiness is biological and more clear cut: “I am battling to stay awake. When I sit on the bus I’m nodding off.”

According to this description, you can be tired even if you’ve slept twelve hours, because your levels of energy are affected by outside factors; your work, your relationships, your levels of stress can all take a toll on you and your productivity levels.

Here are five things you can do to stay energized:

Develop a bedtime routine

For some reason, once you grow up bedtime routines fall out of favor. They shouldn’t, since they’re very helpful, especially when there’s a lot of stuff going on in your life and routines can help you stay on track. Try to make your bedroom as sleep friendly as possible — tidy, cozy, clean sheets and soothing scents.

Don’t limit your bedtime routine to the hour before bed; try to include a workout during  the day and implement cellphone and TV boundaries when in bed. Also, avoid eating anything heavy before sleeping or snacking after you’ve brushed your teeth. These rules might seem silly, but they help your brain stay organized and on track.

Talk to friends

No matter if you’re an introvert or an extrovert, talking to your close friends will always give you a little boost of energy. If you’re feeling down, reach out and let your friends help you and bring you out of your slump.

Exercise

If you’re feeling low on energy, be that at work, in the evening or right when you wake up, moving around is one of the best ways to get a quick boost of energy and get stuff done. While it’s recommended to workout for at least a half hour, a 10 minute walk will also provide results, especially when in a time crunch.

Fake it till you make it

Psychology Today highlights how important pretending to be happy or energetic can be. “Faking it” can influence the ways in which we feel, be that through smiles or bursts of energy. If you’re not feeling energetic it might be a lot to ask to pretend to feel that way, but it’s a trick that works every single time. It’s kind of creepy.

Eat proteins with meals and snacks

Nutritional therapist Jackie Lynch spoke with The Guardian and explained that proteins help people keep their blood sugar balanced. “This will help you avoid the dreaded mid-afternoon energy slump. And foods that are rich in protein also often contain iron, an extra bonus for anyone who is borderline anemic. Meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and pulses are all good sources,” she explains.

People Keep Turning To Marijuana Lingo To Name Their Pets

0

Marijuana-themed names like Budder, Dank, and Indica are trending upwards for pet owners nationwide.

Choosing a name for your pet is incredibly difficult and important. You’re giving them an identity of sorts and you usually want it something that will bring a positive association. This is why often people name their dogs and cats after a character in their favorite movie, or favorite pop star.

But people just as often pick something they love, which might explain the recent rise in people naming their pets after marijuana-related terms and phrases. Last year, we reported how pet owners in Denver were starting to use marijuana-themed names for their pets. But according to Rover, that small trend has exploded nationwide.

RELATED: What To Know Before Using CBD To Treat Your Pet’s Travel Anxiety

For example, the name Budder — as in a marijuana bud — is up 600% nationwide from last year. Some other names also trending up: Dank (116% increase), Indica (93% increase), Herb (66% increase), and Kush (62% increase). For the city of Baltimore, marijuana-themed names are also on the rise. Apparently, MJ is up 600% in the city while Blaze rose 150%.

The days of Fido and Lassie are gone, though Buddy is still the fourth-most popular dog name in the country. Some other trends this year in the pet-naming world: naming your dog after Game of Thrones characters is still on rise, despite the final season airing earlier this year on HBO. Names like Melisandre, Sandor, and Brienne have increased since last year, with Arya cracking the top 100 most popular pet names this year.

RELATED: Why Losing A Dog Can Be Harder Than Losing A Loved One

More pop culture names dominated the list outside GoT, though. Taylor Swift and Khalid topped the charts for rockstar names, though Lizzo will probably become one of the most popular pet names by year’s end. Names like Thor, Drax, Flash, and Valkyrie topped the list for most popular superhero names while the Toy Story 4 movie caused names like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Slinky Dog to rise as well.

Pro Baseball Removes Marijuana From Its Banned Substances List

As an effort to crack down on opioids, minor league players will no longer receive marijuana drug testing.

Professional baseball players will no longer receiving marijuana drug testing at any level, effectively allowing athletes to use cannabis at their own discretion. The move comes as Major League Baseball and the Players Union negotiate a new agreement around opioids, following the tragic overdose of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who was found dead in a Texas hotel room this summer.

Marijuana had remained on the banned substances list for minor league players, though ball players in the majors did not receive marijuana testing. Now the drug has been removed from the banned substances list for minor leaguers, as the The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.

This is part of an effort by the MLB to crack down on opioids throughout professional baseball. The Los Angeles Times reported in October that the league might institute opioid testing for players as a precautionary measure. The league will continue its testing for other recreational drugs, such as cocaine, MDMA, and LSD.

Under the previous rules, minor league baseball players would receive a 25-game suspension should they test positive for marijuana. The penalty would rise to a 50-game suspension after a second positive test, and a 100-game suspension for a third. Following a fourth positive test, players could be banned for life.

RELATED: How Each Of America’s Sports Leagues Test For Marijuana

This, however, does not signal a wholehearted embrace of marijuana by professional baseball. In March, the MLB vice president of drug, health and safety programs sent a memo to players warning them of taking CBD. He warned that some products could contain THC, which might cause players to trigger a positive drug test. At the time of this reporting, it remains unclear whether the league will endorse players using CBD or marijuana as a pain management tool directly.

What We Learned About CBD In 2019

0

The study of CBD and marijuana saw big strides in 2019. Here are some of the most important facts we learned this year.

Every year, CBD becomes a more prominent topic and a more promising business venture for health and wellness companies.

In 2019 people Googled CBD more times than they Googled dieting, with analysts clumping the term with other popular wellness trends like “marijuana,” “veganism” and “exercise.” This is a surprising feat for a compound that still remains a relative mystery when it comes to its health benefits.

Despite the large amounts of interest that CBD has cultivated in such a short span of time, a lot remains in limbo. The FDA and some CBD product makers don’t have a grasp on the correct dosages of the compound, or what diseases and conditions it can treat.

RELATED: Can Taking CBD Make It Easier To Digest Political News?

But not all is bad news; even if the road to understanding marijuana completely is long and meandering, researchers have made some discoveries and connections throughout the year. Here are some of the most promising developments regarding CBD in 2019.

CBD and epilepsy

The FDA currently approves the use of CBD for treating epileptic conditions, even if researchers don’t know how the compound interacts with the body and provides relief. “CBD is a good option for children and adults with certain kinds of epilepsy, but as with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), it can become less effective over time and the dose may need to be increased to manage the seizures,” says Shimrit Uliel-Sibony, M.D, lead author of a study conducted on children with epilepsy and CBD. The compound was able to treat different kinds of epilepsy, including ones caused by Dravet syndrome, strokes, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

One important improvement that’s been made recently is a focus on the individual cannabinoids over marijuana’s effects as a whole. This approach allows for deeper analysis and for a better understanding of the compounds that make up marijuana, how some of these interact with each other and produce better results, and how some treat some conditions individually with more accuracy.

More possibilities for research

As people — and the government — grow more accustomed to CBD, studies that look into the compound will also grow bolder, sampling larger pools of subjects and broaching other types of conditions and ailments.

“The highly complex interactions between cannabinoids and their receptors will almost certainly reveal more discoveries in the near future and further on,” Rob James, managing director of Cannuba, explained to Pharmaceutical Technology.

The more we learn about the ways in which CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in our bodies, the more answers and possible routes for research scientists will have.
