What You Need To Do To Marijuana Before Making Edibles

Here is a typical scenario for a newbie in the kitchen getting ready to make edibles:

  1. Spend hard-earned money to purchase enough herb to make edibles! Here: a batch of brownies.
  2. Go to the kitchen and add the herb to your favorite brownie recipe.
  3. Sample the finished brownies and taste the weed and wait.
  4. Feel frustrated because the brownie not only tastes a little odd, it isn’t psychoactive.
  5. Never try it again because of No.

The missing step? Decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation is a chemical process that converts THCA to THC, the active ingredient in cannabis that provides the intoxicating effect. Raw marijuana leaves are loaded with THCA, but it needs to be heated in order to create THC.

If you smoke marijuana you get high. But if you were to eat it, you won’t. Simple as that. So in order to activate the essential goodness of the plant, it needs time and heat — that’s decarboxylation.

Decarbing At Home

There are too many theories and methods for the most effective way to decarboxylize marijuana to go into here. Many experts argue over time and temperature and I guarantee whatever I write here will be disputed by a host of home chefs. But, in general, here’s how to do it:

  1. Set your oven to 225 degrees.
  2. Place herb in covered container (Pyrex works well)
  3. Bake for 30-45 minutes
  4. Let cool.

Now the THCA has been converted to usable, active THC.

There are ways to do it in a crockpot and other methods. But if you are just starting out, this is the easiest way.

Making It Even Easier

There are a couple of products on the market that make this process even easier and provide a consistent end product every time.

Magical Butter
The MagicalButter machine is a versatile countertop botanical extractor. It makes infuses butter, oil and other liquids at the push of a button. It is a time-saving device and you will never have to guess if you did it right.

NOVA
NOVA is a precision decarb device. Place cannabis in the the slick device, seal the lid, hit a button. About 75 minutes later, you’ve got a fully activated product. This device is great for patients who rely on a specific regular dose.

If you plan on cooking with cannabis at home, we recommend you bone up on decarboxylating. You will save yourself from making a lot of mistakes. And in the long run, you will save time, money and temper tantrums.

This Week’s Music: Madonna, Kelsey Lu And Clairo

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the week’s best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column features Madonna’s collaboration with Swae Lee, Kelsey Lu and Skrillex awesome collaboration and Clairo’s lead single of her upcoming album. Check them out!

Pop

Madonna – Crave

I don’t know what to say about Madonna’s late music period. I don’t want to say that she’s lost it because she’s an icon forever but her last songs are boring and forced. No one’s having fun. Not Madonna, not Swae Lee, not Maluma, certainly not us. “Crave” is clearly the hip hop song of her upcoming record, and it’s not completely awful but it’s also not good. It’s bland. I guess that’s the most appropriate word that describes Madonna’s current music. Although it tries hard to incorporate sounds and genres, it irons out all the crinkles and the good stuff.

Electronic

Kelsey Lu and Skrillex – Due West

RELATED: This Week’s Music: Gracey, Adam Lambert And Halsey

Skrillex is a multifaceted artist, mostly remembered by his dub step and crazier songs. Luckily, as of late he’s been working with artists of all genres, demonstrating that there’s a lot he can do. “Due West” is more EDM than experimental, but it still has some fun and an edge that the majority of the EDM songs out now don’t have. It’s not the world’s best song but it’s a neat and seamless collaboration between Kelsey Lu and Skrillex. Definitely a fun summer song.

Indie

Clairo – Bags

Clairo is an exciting rising artist. Her debut album called “Immunity” is coming out on August 2. “Bags” is her lead single, a quiet and contemplative song that’s packed with feeling. Produced by Rostam and Clairo herself, the lyrics are simple and so is the music, supported by its unpretentious and honest lyrics and a few well placed piano keys that add some gravity and keep the momentum going. It’s a great song that doesn’t need anything else.

Dogs Of Instagram: Chow Chow

In order to be irreplaceable, one must be a little different. Of ancient Chinese origin, the Chow Chow is more than a little different. Its fluffy hairdo and scrunched face are immediately noticeable, with both unique traits solidifying the admiration of any dog lover.

While this breed is dignified, serious-minded and arguably the ultimate show-stopper, be careful when approaching the Chow Chow; they’re territorial and very protective of their owner. This being said, owners say the breed is the cleanest of all dogs. So there’s that!

Here, we pay tribute to five of the squishiest Chows of Instagram.

Prince Harry Was Seen Kissing A Meghan Markle Lookalike After Winning Polo Match

While Meghan Markle was home caring for their newborn son, Prince Harry slayed a charity polo match in Rome on Friday. Thankfully, a lookalike was on hand to congratulate the Duke of Sussex.

The Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup, now in its ninth year, benefits children affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. It’s a cause near and dear to Harry’s heart.

According to the many phots that were snapped of the tournament, Harry was beaming, posing alongside his winning team and their trophy. But things really got cheeky when he gave a peck on the cheek to a woman wearing in a long red dress and dark long hair.

Even though his wife used to be a suitcase model for “Deal or No Deal” back in the day, it was this other woman that Harry had to kiss to claim his prize.

WATCH: Comedian Hilariously Explains Why Marijuana Isn’t A Gateway Drug

If you still aren’t sure whether or not marijuana is a gateway drug, this video may not be right for you. Don’t worry, we have other ways to bone-up on the topic, but this video from comedian Sean Patton points out the absurdity of the argument all while making you laugh.

RELATED: Marijuana Works As An Exit Drug From Pain Medications

“If you want to call marijuana a gateway drug, it’s because it helps you close the gate. You know what I mean? Booze is a gateway drug,” Patton says. “But they can’t call it that, because there’s no gate anymore. It’s been plowed over by a f***ing guy in an F-150 after tailgating.”

You can watch the full video below, where he also digs into the musical choices of surgeons and more.

Why Prince William And Kate Middleton Broke Up In 2007

With recent affair allegations surrounding Prince William (he’s said to have hooked-up with socialite and family friend Rose Hanbury), some are starting to look back at the shaky beginning of William and Kate’s relationship.

The two began dating while attending University of Saint Andrews, but broke up briefly in 2007 before getting married four years later. And now we may know why.

RELATED: That Time Prince William Said He And Kate Shared A Dirty Sense Of Humor

According to a documenter titled “Prince William at Thirty,” the future King had a wandering eye, which was caught by paparazzi. (Oh, the woes of being famous!) Specifically, Will dancing with a “mystery” blonde. When Kate saw the photos, she reportedly told William that “you can’t have it both ways.” His response? He implemented a break in their relationship.

During an interview with William after they announced their engagement, Kate said she appreciates that time apart from her now husband, saying, “I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger and I really valued that time for me as well – although I didn’t think it at the time.”

It’s also been reported that the “mystery” woman isn’t really a mystery, and that William had a known crush on a woman named Isabella Calthorpe, who went on to marry the son of business magnate and Virgin founder Richard Branson. Isabella’s half-sister, Cressida Bonas, famously dated Prince Harry from 2012 to 2014.

RELATED: Baby Sussex Birth Certificate Reveals Meghan Markle’s Official Occupation

Back in 2007, a royal source told the The Daily Mail, “[William] had fallen for [Isabella] in a huge way and wanted to be with her. He propositioned her several times that summer and although Isabella was single, she knocked William back and said it would be too damaging for her and her career. She is a name in her own right and on her way to becoming hugely successful. In her view, being affiliated with William in a girlfriend capacity would be damaging for her.”

This career the royal source speak of is acting. Her IMDB isn’t long, but she’s starred in a decent number of films such as How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, Night Wolf and the TV series Trinity.

It’s been reported the Isabella is the only woman Kate has ever really been jealous of because she knew how much William was into her.

But oddly enough, just like Cressida attended ex Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, Isabella attended Kate and Will’s royal wedding. These royals really know how to keep it interesting!

Danny Kanell And The History Of Trolls Pretending To Care About Marijuana Research

This week the National Football League announced a partnership with the NFL Players Union to study, among other substances, how effective cannabis could be as a pain management tool for players. This news was met with a largely positive response while others said, with a tinge of sarcasm, “Finally.” You also had Chris Long, a well-regarded former defensive end who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, openly admit to using cannabis throughout his career and advocating the league to provide marijuana access to players.

Again, most of this was positive. Then you have the curious case of Danny Kanell, a sports radio talk show host who revels playing the contrarian a little too much. He decided to zig where others zagged and crafted a straw man argument around the positive enthusiasm of players using cannabis. Here’s what he tweeted:

We all recognize Twitter isn’t the place for thoughtful, nuanced discussions. But Kanell was unfathomably shocked at the negative response his opinion generated. He believed it was all unwarranted, as he, a professional takemaster, was just trying to start a conversation.

RELATED: Ex-NFL Player: Marijuana Is A ‘Godsend’ And Isn’t Addicting

But was he? Or is this yet another example of dogwhistling from commentators and those in positions of power? When users called out Kanell’s actions, the commentator grew bitterly defensive.

What a frustratingly banal sentiment. It’s double frustrating because it’s familiar to cannabis advocates across the country, where those critical of marijuana reform pretend they aren’t the ones blocking genuine dialogues with their concern-trolling. Because any bona fide individual on the front lines of cannabis advocacy would easily, definitively, no-questions-asked agree with the necessity to research and understand the plant better than we do now. But they also know that can’t happen unless laws change, as cannabis research remains blocked in this country thanks to marijuana’s federal status as a Schedule I drug.

The whole point, Mr. Kanell, of the NFL’s announcement is to do exactly that—research, understand, explore. Whether the NFL is acting in good faith or not, we’ll see. But to undercut and subvert the enthusiasm over researching the possibilities of marijuana as a pain management tool isn’t helping anyone.

RELATED: iki Barber Explains How NFL Players Beat Marijuana Drug Tests

It’s the same argument Malcolm Gladwell made earlier this year, when he pushed prohibitionist scare tactics without doing his journalistic duties of examining both sides of the argument. Just this month we saw how this type of rhetoric can block access for those who need help through the actions of the Texas Senate.

The state legislature recently passed a bill that would expand access to its medical marijuana program—the Compassionate Use Act, which provides low-THC cannabis oil to those with qualifying conditions—but blocked including patients with post-traumatic stress disorder because we don’t have “good scientific data” at this time. Yet those same senators nixed a provision that would’ve created a research program in the state, which could’ve provided that “scientific data” they were looking for. Let’s forget, by the way, that Dr. Sue Sisley’s landmark research around how marijuana affects veterans with PTSD is coming out later this year. But no, she wasn’t asked to provide expert analysis to the Texas legislature, despite being the most qualified scientist in the country to do so.

Dr. Sisley, by the way, has been a vanguard in providing research for NFL players around the safety of using cannabis in treatment. Did Kanell ask her or any other qualified physician onto his program to speak on marijuana’s efficacy? Nope! Instead Kanell gave airtime to Mike, a father who called into the program with a sad story about his son. Mike’s son smokes marijuana, you see, and Mike believes it’s robbed his son of any motivation or incentive to pursue a life or success.

And while I (somewhat) sympathize with Mike’s story, I also call bullshit. We have various studies that showcase marijuana as having the opposite effect on users. One study from Florida International University scientists focused on teenage cannabis users (ages 14-18) and found “no significant differences were observed between regular and light users on any motivation index.” We’ve also had research out of the University of Colorado that discovered using cannabis before working out “increases motivation” and “enhances recovery from exercise.”

RELATED: Former Player Says 9 Out Of 10 NFL Athletes Smoke Marijuana

And yes, by the way, there is evidence that cannabis can induce unmotivating behaviors in the short term. I would never deny that, nor would those who actively care about the science behind marijuana. But if you’re asking people to see both sides of an argument, Mr. Kanell, you too have to show both sides. Otherwise, you’re not at all concerned with finding the truth. You just want your opinion to be right.

Meme Of The Week: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Ends And Leaves Us With One Parting Meme

If you have not seen the finale of “Game of Thrones,” and have somehow been able to avoid social media this entire time, consider this post a spoiler alert.

Last Sunday was the finale of “Game of Thrones,” an event that, no matter which characters spoke or died, was going to be one of the most polarizing hours of television ever. The hype that surrounded the show was always one of the things that played against its favor, especially on the later seasons when the fervor was greatest and the writers had no map from the original books.

“Game of Thrones” is a topic that can be discussed for ages, but that’s not why we’re here. We are here for a meme, which began with a striking shot from the final episode of the series.

RELATED: Meme Of The Week: The Amount Of Democrats Running For President Is So High That It Became A Meme

Daenerys Targaryen, having completely embraced her dark side after a whopping two episodes, marches forward menacingly while her dragon spreads his wings directly behind her. She’s become the dragon, the message is clear if not a little on the nose.

The tweet that started it all was excited over the shot, claiming that it should be studied in film classes because of how impressive it is. Before it was deleted due to the trolling, it said: “This shot is brilliant and should be shown in any film study class.”

While I agree that the shot is very cool, having necessitated coordination between script, actor, cinematographer, VFX, and whoever else, the tone of the tweet lends itself for some jokes. Sorry, that’s just how it is. While some users laughed at the original tweet, others submitted screenshots of other TV shows and movies claiming that these were also shots that should be studied in film classes. Here are some of the best reactions:

Federal Government Still Disrespecting Veterans With Outdated Marijuana Policies

0

The Memorial Day weekend is, for most folks, spent in a drunken stupor while soaking up the sun on a boat somewhere in Anywhere, USA. These summertime party people will suck down copious amounts of beer, knock back their weight in Jello-shots and choke down grilled, cylindrical meats with such rabid enthusiasm that their DNA will undoubtedly change in ways that will haunt generations to come. Going hard during those rare, three-day weekends is simply the American way.

But it is important not to forget that while the weekend may be the unofficial start to summer, it is also intended to pay homage to those men and women who have endured the horrors of the battlefield. Without the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans, the reality is none of us would have the freedom to enjoy these waterway festivities, backyard BBQs, or any of the other celebratory shenanigans that makes summer fun.

RELATED: When The VA Lies To Congress About Medical Marijuana, It Lies To Our Veterans

While Memorial Day is more about remembering those soldiers that have lost their lives in combat, we believe it is also a time to reflect on the living veterans as well. Civilians have been taught that these people are the real heroes, deserving of the utmost respect for their service to this country. Yet, the federal government, the faceless force that put these men and women in the line of fire in the first place, does not offer the same reverence. It could be argued that it never has.

Many veterans are suffering tremendous mental and physical strain from their time at war. And rightfully so. It is unnatural for human beings to process the savage atrocities that many of them have witnessed and even carried out. It’s the reason some are never really able to reenter society and have a semi-normal existence. They are bound by the severity of high anxiety, a condition also known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). So, they drink booze, pop prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety medication just to go numb. Others never find the right headspace to keep on breathing once they return home. Some reports show that around 20 veterans commit suicide each day.

But there is a way out of this madness.

Some veterans with PTSD say that marijuana has been instrumental in dealing with the reverberations of war – more so than prescription drugs. There is even research that supports these claims. A study published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs back in 2014 shows that medical marijuana is capable of easing the symptoms of this anxiety disorder in around 75 percent of patients. Other research shows that veterans using medical marijuana are less likely to commit suicide.

RELATED: Senators Introduce First Bill Allowing Veteran Access To Medical Marijuana

But while the herb is legal in more than 30 states for medicinal use, the federal government still flat out refuses to give veterans permission to use it.

As much as President Trump tries to give off the appearance of being a pro-veteran leader, his administration has shown us something else. The Department of Veterans Affairs recently struck down three pieces of legislation intended to provide veterans with legal access to medical marijuana and expand cannabis research. VA officials said as long as marijuana is illegal in the eyes of the federal government, veterans would not have the freedom “to use, possess, or transport medical marijuana” or “discuss the use of medical marijuana with a physician of the Department of Veterans Affairs.”

Still, Congress is the real snag when it comes to veterans having access to medical marijuana. It is clear that cannabis legalization is moving forward in the United States, yet neither chamber has made advancements to bring this concept to the national front. Even in the House, which is supposedly dominated by Democrats interested in legalizing marijuana, all of the reform efforts unveiled over the past few months have not really gained any traction. Unfortunately, these politicos hold all of the cards. But President Trump could apply some pressure to Republicans and get them to take leadership on the issue. As for now, significant progress on this matter seems unlikely in 2019.
