This Week’s Music: Madonna, FKA Twigs And Taylor Swift

This Week’s Music is a column that discusses the week’s best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column is all about pop, featuring the return of two of the biggest players in the game, Madonna and Taylor Swift, and one of the oddest stars in the music industry. Check them out:

Pop

Madonna and Maluma – Medellin

It’s hard to think of something Madonna wouldn’t do, seeing as her whole career is built upon that foundation, but I did find myself surprised at her partnership with Maluma. “Medellin” is a strange hybrid, a song that tries to have some Latin and reggeaton influence but that never strays from the pop formula. It feels like a reboot of “La Isla Bonita” only with more auto-tune and none of the original’s charm and evocative mood. Madonna is a good storyteller – at least she used to be – so it’s a shame that “Medellin” is such a shallow and forgettable effort. All the pieces are there for a better song.

FKA Twigs – Cellophane

RELATED: Professional DSLR Photos Vs. iPhone Camera: What’s The Dif?

FKA Twigs looks and sounds like an artist. No matter your opinion on her style and her songs, whenever you hear her music you get the feeling that there’s a lot going on underneath the surface, something more than mere entertainment and the need to produce a hit. All of this is good, but it makes her music hard to access. “Cellophane” finds her touching on entertainment and depth, delivering a song that’s vulnerable and beautiful. It’s the first time I felt like I should trust her and dive into her work.

Taylor Swift – ME! (Ft. Brandon Urie)

Taylor Swift has a knack for words. Despite the fact that she relies on fairy tales to an annoying degree, she’s capable of bringing out the hopeless romantic in all of us, whether you want to or not. “ME!” is not that song, even if it’ll stay in your brain after just a quarter of a listen. Earworms come as easy as breathing to Swift, so it’s hard to settle for something like “ME!” which exposes her worst traits in one fell swoop. We all know that she’s capable of more layers, more sounds, yet we’ll still settle for this epileptic song. Why?

Dogs Of Instagram: Italian Spinone

The Italian Spinone aka Spinone Italiano, not to be confused with the Italian gelato – spumoni, is a friendly, patient and sometimes stubborn hunting breed. The breed is known for its muscular build and endurance, rather than speed. A great companion, the Spinone is the perfect family member. Its droopy eyes and shaggy eyebrows and beard are as expressively cute as can be. Most seen throughout Continental Europe, these pups are slowly popularizing in the States.

Here, we recognize a breed not recognized enough, with five of the sweetest Italian Spinone’s of Instagram.

How CBD Works To Heal Your Body

Not long ago, scientists had no idea that a major body system existed. While studying the way cannabis interacts with the body in the 1900s, scientists found that the compound THC was binding to receptors in a system they had never noticed before.

They began studying this system and found that it was extremely complex and had a large impact on the way the body functions. They named it the endocannabinoid system after the plant that led to its discovery.

Since then scientists have learned more and more about the way this incredible system affects our bodies. From regulating pain receptors to stimulating serotonin levels, the endocannabinoid system has an impact on our lives every day. While the endocannabinoid system works great on its own, CBD and other cannabis compounds can interact with system receptors to provide an all-natural healing effect.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system is comprised of a series of receptors, enzymes and endogenous cannabinoids. The system’s main function within the body is to help maintain a healthy internal balance – what many scientists refer to as “homeostasis.” It does this by using receptors to interact with various internal and external compounds to regulate our various systems and boost our overall health.

There are two main types of receptors which are present throughout the body – the CB1 receptor and the CB2 receptor. The CB1 receptor is the most prominent and is found in the brain, central nervous system, reproductive system, cardiovascular system, and the liver, among others. The CB2 receptor is more scarce and is found mostly in peripheral systems. The CB2 receptor, however, still plays a very important role in the endocannabinoid system.

RELATED: 7 Ways CBD-Rich Cannabis Can Help Prevent Disease

Our bodies naturally produce compounds called “endogenous cannabinoids” that interact with the endocannabinoid system. The main two compounds that scientists have found are anandamide and 2-AG. Both of these are produced within our body and interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors to make sure our body is working the way it is supposed to be.

The endocannabinoid system has been found to help regulate a variety of different systems and can combat a variety of ailments. For example, according to this 2018 article on cannabinoid receptors and the endocannabinoid system by S. Zou and U. Kumar, “the endocannabinoid system [is] largely involved in various aspects of central neural activities and disorders, including appetite, learning and memory, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, stroke, multiple sclerosis, neurodegeneration, epilepsy, and addiction. The CB1 [receptor] is also involved in physiological and pathological conditions in the PNS (peripheral nervous system) and peripheral tissues, including pain, energy metabolism, cardiovascular and reproductive functions, inflammation, glaucoma, cancer, and liver and musculoskeletal disorders.”

Learning how to tap into the endocannabinoid system could help researchers find ways to treat a plethora of health problems. While the endogenous cannabinoids our bodies make do their part in keeping us strong and healthy, sometimes they need a little help. That’s where external cannabinoids come into play.

What Are Phytocannabinoids and Why Are They Important?

In general, scientists are aware of two types of cannabinoids. Endogenous cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. Endogenous cannabinoids include anandamide and 2-AG and are produced by our bodies to interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors. Phytocannabinoids, on the other hand, are produced by cannabis plants.

When these external cannabinoids are ingested, they interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors in similar ways as endogenous cannabinoids. By doing this, phytocannabinoids can actually boost the endocannabinoid system and help it function differently or even more effectively than it can on its own.

Scientists believe there are up to 100 different cannabinoids produced by cannabis plants, but only five are worth mentioning in this article. The most important phytocannabinoids are THC, CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN.

THC is arguably the most well-known cannabinoid. THC is produced by marijuana and is the culprit behind the psychoactive effects most marijuana users experience. Because of its high concentrations of THC, marijuana is illegal in most parts of the United States.

CBD, on the other hand, is produced in the highest concentrations by hemp plants. Although hemp is a strain of cannabis, it produces little to no THC. Instead, it makes high quantities of CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN. These four cannabinoids don’t cause any psychoactive effects and actually have little to no negative side effects. Instead, when they interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors, they can actually boost the endocannabinoid system’s effectiveness to help moderate pain, regulate mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, improve sleeplessness, increase appetite, reduce nausea and promote muscle and bone growth.

RELATED: What You Need To Know About The Healing Benefits Of Marijuana’s CBG

Each of these cannabinoids produces a slightly different effect. For example, CBN is known for its ability to help reduce the side effects of those who suffer from sleep disorders. CBC is popular for its ability to regulate pain and reduce inflammation. In addition to acting as an anti-inflammatory and aiding sleep, CBG promotes healthy bone growth. Because of their individual effects, many hemp farmers have learned how to grow strains of plants that produce even more of the desired cannabinoid.

The “king” of cannabinoids, however, is undoubtedly CBD. CBD provides a long list of health benefits. For example, CBD can help regulate the immune system, is an anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial agent, helps sooth the side effects of anxiety and depression, reduces nausea and soothes severe and chronic muscle and joint pain, among other things.

Maisie Williams On Her Game Of Thrones Sex Scene

It was the deflowering event heard around the world. On last Sunday’s Game of Thrones episode, with the possible end of humanity around the corner, Arya Stark decided she didn’t want to die a virgin and jumped the bones of the blacksmith boy Gendry. The reaction was mixed.

On one hand, some thought the scene was totally unnecessary. On the other, it was the most sex-positive coitus on the show and a great character evolution for Arya. But Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, reminded everyone that there was another group of people who squirmed even more than you did watching that scene.

The best reaction by anyone watching that scene, however, was via Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark on the show. On her Instagram stories, Turner posted a video in a bath robe while swishing a glass of red wine. Then she said, ““In honor of Easter, I guess Game of Thrones wanted the storyline to have a little Easter bunny hop-hop-hopping into that pussaaaaaayy.”

CBD Reduces Mental Impairment Caused By THC

A new study finds CBD reduces mental impairment caused by THC. It reveals the more cannabidiol (CBD) present in a cannabis strain, the less mental impairment this strain will produce on users.

RELATED: Which Is More Effective For Marijuana Patients, THC Or CBD?

Published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, this study is one of the first to use fMRI technology to get a glimpse of how the brain functions while under the influence of cannabis. The research monitored the brain activity of 17 participants who used different strains of cannabis and compared them to each other. The two strains the study used had equal amounts of THC but differed with their amount of CBD content; one had high amounts while the other had very little of it.

Researchers learned that the strain with low CBD content impaired functional connectivity in the brain, while the strain with high CBD showed none of these impairments. Participants who consumed the low CBD strain also reported feeling more high than participants who consumed the high CBD strain, implying that CBD blocks some of THC’s effects.

“Over the last two decades, rates of addiction and psychosis linked to cannabis have been on the rise, while at the same time stronger strains of cannabis with more THC and less CBD have become increasingly common. We have now found that CBD appears to buffer the user against some of the acute effects of THC on the brain,” says Dr. Matt Wall, lead author of the study.

Studies like this are very useful in determining the properties of CBD and learning more about its interaction with THC. While researchers know that THC is the more psychoactive compound and that CBD is the more therapeutic, it’s beneficial to have a bigger understanding of the relationship between the two and how they can impact and improve people’s lives.

Why Joe Biden Might Be Our Only Anti-Marijuana Presidential Candidate

The upcoming presidential race is set to be a real doozy. It is one where the country will either embrace the same lunatic shenanigans it has experienced for the past few years with President Trump or relish in new blood.

Many cannabis advocates hope that if the Democrats take over the Oval Office, it will be by someone dedicated to changing the pot laws in this country. But wouldn’t you know it. Out of all the Democratic candidates that have put their hats in the ring, the one that has the best chance at earning it, former Vice President Joe Biden, might be a little bassackwards when it comes to marijuana reform.

When the 76-year-old Biden announced on Thursday that he was going for the 2020 presidential election, the cannabis industry felt something it hasn’t in a long time – heat, panic and fear that all of its work to legalize the leaf at the national level was about to go up in flames for at least another four years. After all, presidential support is critical in the next phase of legalization in this country. Even if Congress would happen to come to terms on a plan to legalize weed across the United States, the president must still sign off on it before it becomes law.

RELATED: Should Voters Trust 2020 Democrats’ Newfound Support Of Marijuana?

Indeed, Obama’s one-time right-hand man is a solid contender that could definitely stymie the progress of pot in this country. He has a long history as one of the most avid drug warriors in Congress, one of which includes supporting federal policies to ramp up mass incarceration for dope offenders.

Biden was never a fan of marijuana, either. In the past, he voted to impose harsher sentences against pot offenders, and has essentially helped make it easier for law enforcement to crack the skulls of stoners.

Although Biden is trying to reinvent himself as part of this upcoming election, his position on drugs, especially marijuana, does not appear to have changed. We hate to say it, but in many ways, the cannabis community is almost better off with four more years of orange-goon politics than taking a chance on Biden.

“He‘s very out of touch on this subject compared to other candidates,” Mason Tvert, spokesperson for the Marijuana Policy Project, told Rolling Stone. “Quite frankly, he seems to be a bit more out of step on this issue than President Trump.”

But then again, cannabis advocates have a tendency to be a little paranoid. They also seem to forget that people do change. Sure, Biden spent most of his political career staunchly opposed to drugs, but it must be taken into consideration that the man got started in the Senate back in 1974. High Times magazine was just getting started back then and the drug war, well, that was all brand new. No one, at the time, had any idea that taking such a hard-nosed approach to combating dope slingers would be such a failure.

RELATED: Why The US Will Never Elect Another Anti-Marijuana President

Fast forward to present times and most of the country understands that we cannot arrest our way out of a drug problem. To that end, the majority also seems to get the idea that legalization has mostly favorable results.

The truth of the matter is Biden did spend most of the eighties and nineties pushing the “tough on drugs” mentality. But the thing is, no one really knows where Biden stands on marijuana reform in this day and age. He has not yet offered up his position on the matter in the form of a public statement. Still, Biden did say recently that he does regret supporting the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988. When asked about it during a criminal justice event, Biden said: “I haven’t always been right.”

It is difficult to imagine that Biden‘s campaign expects to clinch the nomination by selling old ideas about marijuana that more than 60 percent of the population no longer buys into. His team is up against a slew of Democratic pot progressives, all of which support the idea of national legalization, and considering that even President Trump is poised to offer his full support on marijuana reform in the near future, running a campaign that suggests the nation revert back to the “Just Say No” methodologies of the eighties just doesn’t make sense. So, while it is necessary to take Biden’s anti-drug record into serious consideration, he should be at least given a chance to update his views on weed (John Boehner did!) before he is ruled out as the Democratic choice.

Joe Biden’s Toughest Opponent Is His Criminal Justice Record

Former Vice President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that he would seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency. This is Joe Biden’s third run for the presidency in 32 years, and during his long tenure in public service, the Democratic Party has changed dramatically, particularly on issues involving criminal justice and drug policy. It is on these issues that Mr. Biden’s strengths have become his weaknesses.

Mr. Biden’s resume of public service would position him to be the most experienced individual to seek the office of president—including a space of nearly 40 years as a U.S. senator and eight years as a trusted Vice President to Barack Obama. However, it also means Mr. Biden has a long voting record in a party that sees certain issues differently than earlier periods of public service.

Mr. Biden will be criticized widely by progressives, liberals, communities of color, young people, and other key demographic groups within the Democratic Party over his participation in and advancement of the War on Drugs and, and related, his authorship of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (also known as the 1994 Crime Bill). The 1994 Crime Bill continued and expanded a criminal justice system that enhanced racial inequities in the enforcement of the law. It expanded the federal government’s use of the death penalty. It included a federal three strikes law. It simultaneously expanded drug testing and restricted opportunities for federal inmates to better themselves.

RELATED: Why Do So Many Americans Now Support Legalizing Marijuana?

For many groups in the Democratic Party, the Crime Bill was seen as a devastating expansion of the police state disproportionately shouldered by communities of color. It is seen as a law that is racist in part and one that has limited the economic, social, and educational opportunities among demographic groups already facing significant challenges in each. Although many in the Democratic Party see portions of the Crime Bill, including the assault weapons ban and the Violence Against Women Act, as positives, it is Biden’s authorship and support of the law as damning. (It should be noted that the only other 2020 presidential candidate who was serving in Congress in 1994, then-Rep. Bernie Sanders, voted in favor of the bill.)

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Biden pushed legislation that expanded the War on Drugs and as a Senator and Vice President, he did little to reform America’s addiction to treating drug use as a public safety rather than public health problem. Although not the direct cause of the increase, Mr. Biden’s tenure in the Senate saw an explosion in the number of drug arrests in the United States, and his support of legislation (as well as the support of hundreds of other Democrats) helped contribute to it.

And now, a majority of Americans and a supermajority of Democrats see these issues differently than they did in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. According to a 2017 ACLU poll, 9 in 10 Americans see a need to reform the criminal justice system. The same poll found that that “68 percent would be more likely to vote for an elected official if the candidate supported reducing the prison population and using the savings to reinvest in drug treatment and mental health programs” and “72 percent…would be more likely to vote for an elected official who supports eliminating mandatory minimum laws.” According to a 2018 Voice of the People/University of Maryland poll, between 80 and 90 percent of Democrats supported a variety of reductions in mandatory minimum sentencing. And an October 2018 Gallup poll showed that 75 percent of Democrats supported cannabis legalization. This polling shows an electorate with view very different than Sen. Joe Biden’s voting record.

So, what is a law-and-order, 1980s drug warrior to do? Repent.

If Joe Biden wants to be the Democratic nominee in 2020, he needs to face these issues head on, and Mr. Biden may be the best positioned to do so. One benefit the former Vice President has is that many Americans see him as sincere and honest. And while transforming from “Joe Biden, Crime Buster” to “Joe Biden, Criminal Justice Reformer” may be a political calculation, his candidacy depends on his being contrite and convincing.

RELATED: Should Voters Trust 2020 Democrats’ Newfound Support Of Marijuana?

Mr. Biden cannot simply say it was a different time and the public had a different view. (They did.) He cannot simply say that he didn’t realize it would have a disproportionate impact on communities of color. (It’s hard to see how he couldn’t.) He needs to apologize to all Americans for pushing legislation that hurt America. He needs to say that he made a mistake and that he knows that lives were lost, opportunity was foregone, and families were ruined because of laws he helped pass. He needs to speak passionately and eloquently about the impact of his work and the problems it has caused. Finally, he needs to explain, in detail, how he will not simply apologize for his past actions, but right them. He needs to issue detailed plans around criminal justice reform, drug policy, policing, mental health policy, and drug treatment policy. He needs to convey to Americans that he has learned the hard lessons of his past and that his presidency is his opportunity to heal the wounds he helped inflict.

Would a mea culpa of that magnitude help convince every Democratic voter that Mr. Biden is a different person? No. But a sincere and convincing approach to these issues will benefit the former vice president in multiple ways. First, he will convince some voters that he is a reformed person who has seen light. Second, he will help blunt (not eliminate) attacks that would destroy him as a primary candidate if he opted not to apologize. Third, in the event he wins the nomination, it may help him convince voters on the left to turn out to vote for him, even if they are not enthused about his candidacy. Finally, it can show voters that an old dog can learn new tricks and that one of those new tricks can be compassion emerging from listening to the concerns of everyday Americans—a seeming rarity in American politics.

Or, Mr. Biden can hold firm to his past views on all of these issues (and others), opt not to repent, and ensure that the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is his third strike.

Kate Beckinsale ‘Splits’ From Comedian Pete Davidson; Justin Bieber And Ed Sheeran Tease Secret Project

Kate Beckinsale ‘splits’ from comedian Pete Davidson

Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson have apparently called it quits on their three-month romance.

According to Entertainment Tonight, The Widow star and Saturday Night Live comedian parted ways amicably. “They’re still friendly but are not on romantic terms,” the source allegedly told the publication.

These rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt however, as PEOPLE are reporting that the pair are “still dating” but have just “decided to slow things down a bit” because they “got super serious very fast.”

RELATED: That Time Louis CK Told ‘SNL’ Producers That Pete Davidson Smoked Too Much Weed

Elsewhere, another insider told Page Six that Beckinsale “struggled with the attention on her relationship with Pete” and the fact that “he lives his life with his heart on his sleeve.” The same outlet states that it was not the couple’s much-talked-about age difference that contributed towards their split.

Beckinsale, 45, was first linked to Davidson, 25, when they were spotted leaving a Golden Globes after party together on 6 January. Since then, they have been photographed packing on the PDA at numerous events including a New York Rangers hockey game at Madison Square Garden in early March.

Justin Bieber & Ed Sheeran Tease Secret Project

Ed’s manager, Stuart Camp, posted a photo of the 28-year-old singer standing in front of a green screen while staring at the camera. “This guy! Something is happening,” he captioned the post.

It didn’t take long before fans realized that Stuart’s caption and photo was an almost exact replica of a post Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun, posted just last week. “This guy! Something is happening. Love it,” Scooter captioned the similar photo of Justin staring at the camera in front of a green screen.

Clearly, something really is happening! While it’s not clear what exactly that something is, a source close told The Blast the two stars — who have worked together before, Ed co-wrote Justin’s 2015 single “Love Yourself” — are definitely working on a new project together. However, the insider remained tight-lipped when asked if it was new music.
