Tips To Help With Cuffing Season

0

Autumn is here, pumpkin spices flows and cuffing season has started!

The leaves are falling, coats are making appearances, and people are starting to think long and hard about the cold months. For singles, the dark season adds extra frenzy to finding a potential mate.  So here are some key tips to help with cuffing season.

Cuffing season is  the time of year where singles focus on short-term relationships, usually beginning in the fall around October with an eye toward a potential change in mid spring. And while a months-long relationship with a faux expiration date doesn’t sound the most intriguing to some, there are benefits to getting cuffed. The primary benefit is, for some, they need to coziness of a relationship to endure the festive holiday season followed by a bleak winter.

Scientifically, there is also a reason some embrace cuffing season. “Hormones change with the season due to light and temperature,” Tristan Coopersmith, licensed psychotherapist and founder of Life Lab, “Our sex hormones, which are responsible for libido are super charged. We are literally just hungrier for sex during this time of the year.”

Be Clear

Be clear about what you’re seeking in the long and short term. Setting expectations from the beginning allows your potential partners to react accordingly to your needs. This will minimize the chances of anyone getting hurt in this process and it will also weed out all the people you don’t want to match with.

Be Open

Some people have a dream expectation of exactly who they think they want, but it often can cause them to miss the right person.  As The Rolling Stones song says “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need”.  Opening yourself up to people who may not be the exact thing you are looking for may also expand your own thoughts, abilities and mindset.

Be Flexible

There is a saying from some Southern mothers about “The quirks you think are adorable today are the annoyances of tomorrow”.  You can not change people.  Look at the person you wish to cuff with clear eyes, not with the expectation they are a project you need to complete.  Accept them as you expect them to accept you as you are.

Although there’s no way of knowing if people are consciously looking for relationships which only last through the winter, there’s a large amount of data that at least supports the fact that the winter makes us all a little crazy.  But, you never know. If Hallmark movies has taught us anything, it is there are happy endings.

Las Vegas’s Sphere Gets A Weed Themed Competitor

0

The Sphere is Vegas’s latest must see attraction, but a new one is due to open in the first quarter of 2024

Vegas has a history of over the top attractions delighting and engaging the millions of tourists. From stars like Elvis and Celine to the Chihuly ceiling to the the highest roller coaster in the world, the city constantly thinks of ways of engaging the daily throng of visitors. The latest, The Sphere, is the VERY expensive world’s largest spherical structure and concert venue. The $2 billion globe is kicking it off with U2 in residence. Every night is an incredible visual as the sphere is also a giant screen with a variety of innovative imagines.

But hot on the heels on the Sphere is Cannabition, a state of the art cannabis immersive experience opening next to Planet 13.  With 90% of the country open to some form of legal cannabis, this should turn out to be a key attraction – like Kentucky and their bourbon! The 12,000 square-foot cannabis immersive experience has engaged creators to make the experience incredible with or without a little extra (wink wink).

But the founders aren’t stopping there.

The immersive experience just made a significant partnership announcement. Cannabition is welcoming legendary founding figure of outlaw country, Mr. Willie Nelson and his celebrated brand, Willie’s Reserve. The teams are putting their heads together to assure guests a “stoned-cold good time!”

Nelson, an icon of music and marijuana, has spent 7 decades changing the way people look at cannabis and has been a champion of legalization.

His team shared, “with our new partnership in Cannabition, Willie’s Reserve is looking ahead with anticipation for a chance to bring Willie Nelson’s dream for legal weed to a new immersive experience in legendary Las Vegas. Now that’s entertainment!”

Michael Stratton, the general manager, brings a wealth of entertainment and hospitality knowledge. Most recently, Michael was the General Manager and Director of A&R for the iconic indie record label Bong Load Records, where he managed specialty releases by artists like The Killers, Beck, Elliott Smith and James Blunt, among others. He is also major label recording artist himself, a 35-year Las Vegas resident and has lifetime of music industry and operations experience.

Board Member Alex Brough believes Vegas will be home to the premier cannabis attraction and will add to the list of unique opportunities for tourists like Meow Wolf, the Mob Museum, and the extraordinary culinary scene.

Science’s Take On Marijuana For A Lean Physique

Researchers studying diabetes, metabolism and obesity have become increasingly interested in how cannabis may be an effective therapy for human systems out of balance.

It is the time of year when we are watching the weight and trying to look our best.  Fasting, running, diet plans, pilates and cross training are all the table.  But what is science’s take on marijuana for a lean physique?

Let’s start with some basic body chemistry. The pancreas creates insulin, a hormone that moderates blood sugar levels. It helps use sugar/glucose from carbohydrates for instant energy or stored as fat for later. That is the very process cannabis can influence, according to a growing body of research. It begins at a micro level.

THC is the compound in cannabis that causes people to feel “high.” While it may be the most famous cannabinoid, there are more than 100 in existence and they occur naturally in our bodies as endocannabinoids. The endocannabinoid system is present in all vertebrate animals and helps regulate sleep, energy, appetite and metabolism just to name a few. It helps create balance or homeostasis at a cellular level. This is why marijuana as medicine can be so effective. It is seen not as an invader, but as a familiar substance to the body’s cannabinoid receptors and works like a lock and key.

But getting leaner by using cannabis? Are you serious? This is not just a pipe dream. Researchers studying diabetes, metabolism and obesity have become increasingly interested in how cannabis may be an effective therapy for human systems out of balance.

While much of this research has been conducted on rats, human cannabis users have been shown to have significantly lower obesity rates and have trimmer waistlines than non-users. The cannabinoid THC has also been shown to suppress appetite. These findings have been further validated in studies with huge sample sizes.

Age, sex and race do not seem to matter; the effect is across the board. This has led to a deeper look and call for more research into how the endocannabinoid system may be manipulated to help people with obesity and blood sugar metabolism.

The strange, good news does not end there. Cannabis users have also been shown to have lower cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood. The makers of statin drugs popular in common therapy for these conditions are watching these developments closely.

Jake Felice, a naturopath working in Washington State and California, has long been an advocate for appropriate cannabis therapy. While there is much promising research, Felice reminds patients:

“While cannabis has not been shown to be a weight loss agent, it is associated with lower BMI (body mass index) and can have a positive influence on the body’s ability to regulate sugar levels. Additionally, cannabis can positively affect stress hormones associated with weight gain.”

Cannabis alone will not help you to have a lower BMI if you don’t exercise and have unhealthy eating habits. But, if researchers are right, it can help people to be more in balance and aid in maintaining a healthy body weight.

Granted, we have a long way still to go on research, but stay tuned. Maybe one day the advice from the Surgeon General will be, “Just Say Grow.”

Did Matt Gaetz Put A Knife In The Cannabis Industry

People are consuming more marijuana than ever, but the industry is still suffering significant growing pains.  As the industry expands, bad players are being weeded out but New York and California have truly botched the legal system.  The marijuana industry is primarily filled with small businesses like dispensaries, craft product makers, farmers and more. On the key issues preventing them from moving to profitability is banking and taxes. After a 3 year downturn (despite increased sales), the cannabis industry saw a ray of hpe in the SAFER Banking bill….but then the US House of Representatives devolved into one of the hottest messes in its storied history.  So did Matt Gaetz (R-FL) put a knife in the cannabis industry?

RELATED: Unlicensed Shops in NYC Are Doing Better Than The Naked Cowboy

The Biden administration has been extremely slow in delivering on his campaign promise of increased federal legalization and an easier way to do business.  The House passed SAFE Banking 7 times in bipartisan fashion, all failing in the Senate.  This year, the Senate, with key sponsors of Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) wrote the bill SAFER Banking and managed to get it out of committee.

WIth some bipartisan support, including Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), the bill looked like it will pass the Senate and head to the House before going to the White House with hopes of Biden’s signature.  The industry crossed fingers with hope and cannabis stocks inched upwards.

Then Representative Matt Gaetz ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker and shut down Congress. For the last two weeks, GOP Representatives have been caught up in a vortex of a floor fight which shows little hope of abating soon.  After twice losing, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced he is pushing for a third floor vote for speaker.  Until a speaker is elected, House bills remain stalled.

Senator David Daines (R-MT) is saying the the Senate will hold off on floor action until there’s a sense the House can pass a bill. But if they year ends, everything starts back at the beginning, and adds months of waiting to the beleaguered cannabis industry.

One issue around the lack of a SAFER Banking act is it makes it harder on the regular workers of businesses to get car, house and other traditional loans.  Without SAFER Banking, this is seen as a negative and count against a regular worker who is holding onto a steady job.  Even with a well paying job, banks are more likely to look at through a “no” lens.

So in a way, Matt Gaetz is also harming the working man and small business owner.

The Best Ways To Tell If You’re Allergic To Sex

0

Chocolate, alcohol, the great outdoors – all wonderful things loved by millions, but some have a nasty allergy which denies them the enjoyment of such treats.  And it seems, some people have the same reaction to making love.  No, being allergic to sex doesn’t mean you’re allergic to the act of sex. Like relationships, it is more nuanced. Here are the best ways to tell if you’re allergic to sex.

Like any allergy, a sex allergy develops when your immune system has a negative reaction to some sort of substance, whether the substance is coming from your partner or you. These allergies are hard to pinpoint, because many of the symptoms include heavy breathing, sweating, and other assumed to be natural side effects of sex.

RELATED: People Who Use Weed Also Do More Of Another Fun Thing

Noted expert, Dr. Lindsey Doe, provides guidance on how to recognize and deal with the situation. Here are some of the ways she says you can tell if you’ve developed a sex allergy. If you feel you have an allergy, you should seek medical help quickly.

1. You Feel Sick After An Orgasm

There’s something called Post Orgasmic Illness Syndrome (POIS) which occurs when a man is allergic to his own semen. And the symptoms are similar to the flu. Immediately after ejaculating, a man will get a runny nose, itchy eyes and a sore throat, among other not fun things. POIS is rare, and there are no known treatments.

2. You Experience Burning After Using A Condom

Having a reaction to latex is not uncommon. About three million Americans are allergic to the synthetic product, which obtained from rubber trees and used in a variety of sex products, not just condoms. Unlike food, the companies making condoms don’t have to disclose the ingredients. A good rule of thumb, says Doe, skip lubes (and lubricated condoms) advertising flavors, cooling or heating sensations are not the best for your body. So if you’re a woman who all of the sudden finds herself with an irritated vagina, you might be allergic and should go see your OBGYN.

3. There’s Pain In Your Life And/Or Relationship

Not just with sex, but experiencing pain in your life, including domestic violence, trauma, sexual shame and relationship issues can trigger a physiological response known as ‘genital armoring’ — a physical response to something mental.

‘The immune system is doing its best to signal something is wrong,” says Doe.

4. You Start Experiencing Allergy Symptoms After Sleeping With Someone New

A telltale sign something’s up with your body is having an adverse reaction right after you sleep with a new partner. There is a chance you could be allergic to their semen. Unlike POIS, this condition is known as Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity (SPH).

Says Doe, ‘Basically a protein in the fluid triggers an allergic reaction, usually pain and burning.’ There could also be shortness of breath, dizziness and diarrhea. The good news here is this is super rare. At the very most, only about 40 thousand women in the U.S. experience this, so fingers crossed.

Can Marijuana Help Orthopedic Surgery

With over 7 million orthopedic surgeries a year in Canada and the US, can marijuana help with the outcome?

As people engage in sports or just age, the bones are injuries and just wear done causing orthopedic surgery.

In a study, marijuana use was associated with decreased mortality in patients undergoing total hip, total knee, total shoulder, and traumatic femur fixation, although the significance of these findings remains unclear. More research is needed to provide insight into these associations in a growing surgical population.

While still illegal in Alabama, the state’s researchers are delivering positive news about the cannabis. Scientists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham published a study showing that cannabis use was associated with decreased risk of death during medical procedures.

It is not something we are used to hearing. Cannabis users are less likely to die as a result of surgery. Really? Yes. In this case, it was an enormous body of data that was studied to come to this conclusion.

The hospital records of over 9.5 million patients were evaluated. All patients who had received one of five orthopedic surgeries over a four year period were identified as a sample. Over 26,000 of these patients were also identified as having cannabis use disorder. They became the subgroup and health outcomes were compared between the two groups.

The cannabis users were less likely to die in 4 out of 5 of the procedures. Although patients were considered to have substance use problems with the herb, it saved their lives.

This is not the first time marijuana has been associated as a prophylactic, protecting against death. A University of Arizona study showed that cannabis users were 40% less likely to die in ICU following trauma than non-users. In yet another study from Colorado, the data from nearly 4 millions hospital records were examined. Researchers conclude that cannabis users were less likely to die after being admitted to the hospital. This was particularly true for cancer patients. Cannabis users were also less likely to have cancer.

Unfortunately, cannabis was associated with a greater risk of stroke while in the hospital as well. That will likely be a research avenue we will hear a great deal more about in the future.

Cannabis as a preventative measure to protect the patient is not a new idea. European studies have shown that mice given a single dose of THC, just one of the many active compounds in cannabis, were protected against traumatic brain injury.

If we know that patients who use cannabis are less likely to suffer from brain injury and less likely to die in the hospital, is it that outlandish to forecast that one day people will use cannabis as a preventative? Considering the speed at which new, positive research is being published about cannabis therapy, many things that once seemed fantastical are on the table. The little plant called a weed simply refuses to concede.

Data Weighs In On If Marijuana Makes You Dumb

0

Myths prevail, but science and data help lead the way to the truth. And it looks like marijuana is emerging from the sterotype

There is list of movies showing marijuana addled anti-heros who the audience loves. We’ve seen the moronic marijuana toker in countless movies and sitcoms. But is it fair or true? Data weighs in on if marijuana makes you dumb.

There must be some truth to it, right? Well, the reality is reputable studies suggest little likelihood of a connections between cannabis consumption and decreased IQ.

In fact, a pair of studies published in 2016 reveals marijuana has little long-term effect on learning and memory. Further, the studies suggest any cannabis-related cognitive damage that does occur is reversible.

Even the most ardent defender of cannabis use will cop to the fact getting high plays tricks on your brain. This isn’t any different than alcohol. We’ve all misplaced our car keys or struggled to find the correct word after a couple of cocktails or an edible.

According to Dr. Mitch Earleywine, a professor of psychology at the University of Albany, “marijuana seems to affect a particular kind of intelligence, like short term retention of vocabulary words and other information you might learn in school.”

So, yes, your brain is a bit jumbled if you consume a heavy dose of THC. But what about the long-term impact?  The two reports, one from Britain and the other in the U.S., reached the identical conclusion: It seems there is no evidence adolescent marijuana use leads to a decline in intelligence.

Despite the research, Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, believes the jury is still out. She points to studies comparing brain scans of teenagers who use marijuana to those who don’t. The scans show thinner, less dense connections between lobes among the cannabis users.

RELATED: People Who Use Weed Also Do More Of Another Fun Thing

“You could expect it will decrease your capacity to memorize things and to learn them which is necessary to you to actually further develop your cognitive abilities,” she said.

According to Live Science:

“Brain-scan studies in humans suggest marijuana may be linked to anatomical brain changes, such as shrinking of the amygdala, a brain region processes emotion, reward and fear. In some people with genetic vulnerability, such brain changes might be enough to tip someone into schizophrenia, which is more common in people who have used marijuana. However, the genes in question may lead people to smoke more pot and to be more prone to schizophrenia, rather than directly causing the link between pot and psychosis.”

RELATED: Science Explains How Marijuana Inspires Awe

Even Volkow concedes there’s little proof tmarijuana causes poor brain connections.

NIDA is supporting a study which will map the effects of marijuana on brain development. The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study (ABCD) will follow 10,000 9- to 10- year-olds through early adulthood, using neuroimaging to map changes in the brain.

The bottom line is there’s not much evidence of permanent harm to the brain. But you probably forget where you left your car keys.

Science Discovered A Like Moment To A Marijuana High

Science has proven cannabis is better than alcohol.  More research is being done to unlock the potential for medical help. Medical marijuana is as helpful as addictive opioids, it can bring down anxiety and is a boon for millions of veterans with PSTD. And as more research is being conducted, more discoveries are made.  Now science discovered a like moment to a marijuana high.

As the cannabis movement becomes mainstream, people ask, one of the first questions people ask is “what is like”.  Well, thanks to a research, we have an answer.  It is similar to when you have an organism.

Despite what is show is “bro” movie, the brain is the largest sex organ in the body. So, taking a closer look inside the brain is exactly what curious researchers to the discovery. While much scientific investigation into this question has examined the activity levels in specific areas of the brain, others seek to measure changes in chemical composition.

Researchers from Germany decided to examine the levels of certain endocannabinoids in blood plasma before and after subjects masturbated to orgasm. Endocannabinoids are chemical compounds which interact with receptors in cells altering neurotransmitter release in the brain. The concentrations of several chemicals were measured in the blood plasma of human subjects before and after they masturbated to orgasm.

RELATED: People Who Use Weed Also Do More Of Another Fun Thing

Brain scans using functional MRI’s (FMRI) have shown during masturbation many areas of the brain are engaged. The hypothalamus becomes more active and amps up production of a powerful hormone called oxytocin which acts as a neurotransmitter. The chemical has also been implicated in maternal-infant bonding, empathy and generosity. The thalamus and the substantia nigra, an area densely populated with dopamine-producing neurons, are also highly engaged. Previous research out of Rutgers University has suggested the orgasm creates a type of altered state of reality.

2-AG is the most abundant endocannabinoid in the human body. It is also present in mother’s milk and is believed to regulate appetite, our immune system and to manage pain. The German researchers found masturbating to orgasm significantly increased the amount of the endocannabinoid 2-AG in blood plasma.

Our data indicate the endocannabinoid 2-AG is involved in the human sexual response cycle and we hypothesize 2-AG release plays a role in the rewarding consequences of sexual arousal and orgasm.

This sort of finding is of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry, which may see an opportunity to explore the ways a prescribed medicine could affect cannabinoid levels. Making people’s sexual lives richer is big business. The erectile dysfunction medicine market is predicted to be worth over $5 billion by 2030.

The chemistry of cannabis may have a role to play in yet another area of our personal health. There is much work still to be done. Follow up studies are bound to follow this line of questioning to explore how cannabis-based medicine may help improve peoples’ sex lives.  Noted medical centers have validated the studies and this could be a jumping off point to fresh information.

Meanwhile, you can be thanked science discovered a like moment to a marijuana high so you can tell you curious friends.

Marijuana Shows Promise In Sickle Cell Disease Treatment

Clinical trial results indicate cannabis could provide an alternative or adjunctive treatment to sickle cell patients.

Exact projections remain unknown, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that between 70,000 to 100,000 Americans have sickle cell disease. The disease causes a deficit in red blood cells and blocks blood flow throughout the body. This can result in chronic pain with patients typically prescribed opioids, despite potential side effect like addiction, constipation, and respiratory depression.

But a new study published in JAMA Network Open finds that cannabis could provide an alternative or adjunctive treatment to sickle cell patients. The research, co-led by UC Irvine researcher Kalpna Gupta and UC San Francisco’s Dr. Donald Abrams, represents the first double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial to explore marijuana as a potential pain relief for sickle cell.

RELATED: Do I Really Need Both CBD And THC?

“These trial results show that vaporized cannabis appears to be generally safe,” Gupta said. “They also suggest that sickle cell patients may be able to mitigate their pain with cannabis—and that cannabis might help society address the public health crisis related to opioids.”

Here's How You Can Disinfect Cannabis Packaging

The trial recruited 23 participants with sickle cell-disease-related pain. They either inhaled a cannabis vaporizer with equal parts THC and CBD or a placebo over two five-day inpatient sessions. Researchers then recorded how pain still affected the general activities, sleep patterns, walking, and general mood of participants.

RELATED: Side Effects Of Marijuana Vs Conventional Medications

Those who inhaled cannabis reported general improvements in pain, with the effectiveness of the plant increasing over time. Subjects reported less and less pain interference in walking and sleeping and their moods also improved. However, Gupta noted the difference between the cannabis group and placebo group when it came to measuring pain were not statistically significant. But from the results she saw, Gupta still pushed for more research.

“Pain causes many people to turn to cannabis and is, in fact, the top reason that people cite for seeking cannabis from dispensaries,” said Gupta. “We don’t know if all forms of cannabis products will have a similar effect on chronic pain. Vaporized cannabis, which we employed, may be safer than other forms because lower amounts reach the body’s circulation. This trial opens the door for testing different forms of medical cannabis to treat chronic pain.”

Can CBD Fight Cold And Flu Symptoms

While CBD is no penicillin, can it be used as a supplement in fighting flu and cold symptoms.

Autumn has arrived with the leaves falling, widely varying temperatures, the return of outwear and cold and flu season. Cases of the common cold usually begin in August, but no one wants to sick in the stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year’s when parties are abundant and work becomes less so.  With fun and festivities at stake, can CBD fight cold and flu symptoms?

Missing out on this relaxing time of year because you’re sick in bed with the cold is a nightmare. CBD companies, however, are promising their products can alleviate many of the symptoms associated with the common cold. An important caveat, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still has not issued regulations around CBD products, and peer-reviewed research studies aren’t plentiful due to restrictions placed on scientists worked with cannabis.

RELATED: Here’s How You Can Avoid Getting Sick During The Holiday Season

While CBD is no penicillin, some doctors now the cannabinoid can be used to combat cold symptoms as a supplement. Mary Clifton, an internal medicine doctor and cannabis expert based in New York, told NJ.com CBD could help reduce body aches and fever. It is because of interleukins, a glycoprotein responsible for immune system regulation. CBD can impact your body’s production of interleukins, therefore bolstering the immune system.

“If you’re doing cold and flu [treatment], if you’re doing heavy exertion at the gym, you can put CBD in the situation and it’ll just be next to your Advil,” said Clifton.

CBD, a known anti-inflammatory, can lower inflammation and irritation caused by a sore throat. In a similar manner, CBD can open nasal and sinus passageways, helping those with a stuffy nose breathe easier. The best tactic, however, is to combine CBD use with another superfood like turmeric to boost anti-inflammatory effects.

By the way, this idea of CBD being a cure to cold and flu symptoms isn’t necessarily new. Robert Melamede, who previously served as the chair of the biology department at the University of Colorado Boulder, claimed 10 years ago scientists should focus on treating cold and flu symptoms with cannabis.

“Contemporary antiviral medical technology is currently inadequate to meet the world’s immediate challenges,” Melamede said. “We believe cannabis extract-based medicines can reduce influenza deaths.”
