Why South Koreans Legally Can’t Smoke Marijuana In Canada

You would think legalization of adult-use cannabis in Canada would permit anyone living or visiting within the country to buy and consume marijuana. But as the South Korean embassy in Canada reminded us on Twitter, South Koreans are subject to the country criminal laws —  no matter where they are in the world.

“Even if South Koreans are in a region where marijuana is legal, it will be illegal for them to consume it,” the South Korean Embassy in Canada tweeted. “Please take care not to commit an illegal act and be punished.”

South Korean law dictates that whatever laws are made in the country’s capital applies to citizens no matter their location in the world. In other words, South Koreans recognize that experimenting with marijuana in Canada could technically result in punishment back home. And South Koreans caught by authorities possessing or using marijuana could face up to five years in prison.

“Weed smokers will be punished according to the Korean law, even if they did so in countries where smoking marijuana is legal. There won’t be an exception,” emphasized Yoon Se-jin, head of the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division at Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, according to the Korea Times.

The country is considered a strict enforcer of all drug laws. Celebrities caught using marijuana are often subjugated to apology tours and made public examples of wrongdoing. Authorities dedicate themselves to projecting a “drug-free nation,” according to The Guardian. In a country of more than 50 million people, only 12,000 drug arrests were made in 2015.

How South Koreans traveling abroad in Canada will be treated remains unclear, including whether they will experience extensive searches upon returning to the country. However, the government appears more concerned with drug traffickers than casual users, and will maintain a blacklist of previously caught drug users.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are around 23,000 South Korean students living in Canada. The New York Times also reports that as of May, there 293,000 South Koreans traveling in Canada.

Cops Called On ‘Suspicious Women’ Who Illegally Entered A House…To Clean It

Because there’s nothing scarier than two women dressed to…clean, a neighborhood in Nova Scotia has been asked not to leave their doors unlocked.

The warning came earlier this week when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called on two women who were armed…with a mop and  vacuum cleaner. According to the RCMP:

RCMP were called by the home owner, who was not home at the time. They had been contacted by a concerned neighbour after the two women were observed in the home with a vacuum cleaner and a mop. The investigation has determined that the house was left unlocked in order for the neighbour to walk the owner’s dog, however, two women showed up, cleaned the house, and left without knowing they had the wrong address.

You read that correctly. The women, whose only crime was accidentally leaving a home tidier than they found it, have sparked a neighborhood-wide alert.

The house was cleaned for free, police told the Miami Herald, adding that not all trespassers — even in Canada! — are rogue cleaners: “RCMP would like to take this opportunity to remind home owners to ensure their doors are locked at all times.”

And while police appreciate the alert neighbor who called police, let’s be honest. Every person in that neighborhood is probably secretly keeping their doors unlocked in hopes of attracting a wayward cleaning crew.

Why The UN’s Global ‘War On Drugs’ Is A Failure

0

It is time for the world to rethink how it approaches the illegal drug culture. Because the scheme the United Nations has used over the past decade to put a leash on the black market dope trade has been a “spectacular failure of policy,” according to a new report by the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC). Not only has this plan shaped up to be a miserable failure, but it is one that has contributed to an overall increase in drug abuse and unnecessary violence.

Rather than eliminate the illicit drug market by 2019, which is what the plan was designed to accomplish, the UN gave new life to the war on drugs, the report reads. Drug supplies have continued to increase, while drug use is skyrocketing into dangerous territory.

Over the last 10 years, in addition to the drug-related massacres in the Philippines and Mexico, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands, drug-related deaths have risen 145 percent worldwide. The United States alone was responsible for 71,000 drug overdose deaths in 2017.

By all accounts, it seems the UN has underestimated its opposition.

This remarkable failure has the IDPC calling for the UN General Assembly Special Sessions on Drugs to revamp the way it is dealing with this issue and motivate toward a policy rooted in common sense. But sadly, while the latest report proves the UN’s retaliation efforts are futile, there is not much hope that change is coming.

“This report is another nail in the coffin for the war on drugs,” Ann Fordham, the Executive Director of IDPC, said in a statement. “The fact that governments and the UN do not see fit to properly evaluate the disastrous impact of the last ten years of drug policy is depressingly unsurprising.

“Governments will meet next March at the UN and will likely rubber-stamp more of the same for the next decade in drug policy,” she added. “This would be a gross dereliction of duty and a recipe for more blood spilled in the name of drug control.”

The report shows the UN’s mission to eradicate the illegal drug market is arrogant and a waste of time. Moreover, it has done nothing to improve public health and safety.

“Since governments started collecting data on drugs in the 1990s, the cultivation, consumption and illegal trafficking of drugs have reached record levels,” wrote Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, in the report’s foreword.

“Moreover, current drug policies are a serious obstacle to other social and economic objectives and the ‘war on drugs’ has resulted in millions of people murdered, disappeared, or internally displaced.”

No matter how much it has been proven that the world cannot arrest, incarcerate and execute its way out of the drug problem, the UN continues to support these methods of control instead of policies that focus on human rights and health. Portugal has had great success with this type of blueprint.

But the UN says, for better or worse, it is trying.

“Obviously, there have been significant successes and failures in dealing with the problem of drug trafficking, and we’ve made that clear over the many remarks we’ve made about the drug problem each year,” Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, told CNN.

“The UN Office on Drugs and Crime is the foremost agency in the United Nations that deals with this issue. They continue to deal with the problem. It’s clear from UNODC’s work that they don’t see the efforts as a failure so much as they see it as something, a task which is incomplete. And ultimately, what they are trying to do and what we will continue to press nations to do is have all countries work together to deal with this problem.”

Just last week, Canada became the first G7 nation to legalize marijuana for recreational use – a move that goes against the UN’s drug treaties. Other countries are now looking at imposing similar reforms. There is even talk that the United States may inch closer to federal legalization if the Democrats can gain control of the U.S. House following the November election. The IDPC report shows that marijuana is the primary “drug” of choice across the globe. The UN’s World Health Organization is supposed to make a rescheduling recommendation ahead of next year’s UNGASS meeting.

Last year, the United Nations and the World Health Organization expressed support for drug decriminalization. But stubborn nations, including the United States, continue to hold back a new era of drug reform.

Sephora Now Carries Lord Jones CBD Products

Lord Jones is winning, winning, winning with its high CBD lotion that’s grabbed the internet and celebrities by storm. Chelsea Handler and Olivia Wilde love it according to the Huffington Post and not just for its herbal, citrusy scent; the CBD seems to be doing wonders for everything from period cramps to stiff muscles. And now, anyone can pick it up at Sephora.

The company touted on social media, “We are overflowing with pride and deeply honored to be the first and only CBD brand on Sephora. Thank you SEPHORA for your bold vision to make these healing products available to your audience. We are making history together and the Lord salutes you!”

Lord Jones High CBD Formula Lotion calls itself a game changer. Though it has zero THC, the anti-inflammatory properties of the CBD make it perfect for post-workout recovery, period cramps, dry, rough skin problems and really anything to do with the epidermis or achy muscles. Plus, their CBD is derived from organically cultivated hemp, grown in the USA.

The lotion has a naturally cooling agent that relieves the affected area on contact and utilizes a vacuum pump to deliver a precise dose of two milligrams of CBD per pump. It seems like Lord Jones has really gotten their formula down, and not just for the fresh smelling lotion. They’ve stumbled upon the formula for success during this competitive green rush.

By designing the bottles elegantly, advertising high CBD and zero THC and making the aroma a unisex one, they’re in a market all their own that appeals to millenials as much as perhaps even baby boomers and seniors.

And lotion is not their only offering, it’s just the only one you can buy at the beauty mecca Sephora. According to their website, “Lord Jones confections are made by hand in small batches from single origin Ecuadorian dark chocolate, imported natural European fruit essences and full-spectrum phytocannabinoid-rich CBD extract derived from specially selected organically grown hemp.”

They also carry full spectrum CBD tinctures with peppermint flavoring. The “pain and wellness topicals” are where it’s at in the retail world right now though. Beyond being the talk of the town, the lotion is making a big splash in the cannabis community, many of whom do not shop at big name retail stores. Luckily, because it’s CBD, it can be ordered via internet.

Jada Pinkett Smith admits that she hated her and Will Smith’s 1997 nuptials

Jada Pinkett Smith admits that she hated she and Will Smith’s 1997 nuptials during which she was three months pregnant with their son Jaden.

During a chat on the Facebook Watch series ‘Red Table Talk’, she said, ‘I just knew I never wanted to be married,’ she said. ‘My first trimester was horrible. And I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so p***ed. I went crying down the freaking aisle, I cried the whole way down the aisle.’

Jada added: ‘I just never really agreed with the construct [of marriage]. I just don’t agree with it. I still don’t. Til death do us part is real for me, but all of the rules and all of the ideas. This title “wife,” the accepted conventional definition of wife in the paradigm – I’m not that.’

Jada made it clear she felt pressured into having a wedding by her ‘crying’ mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris – rather than the two of them exchanging vows on a mountain. Wow!

Kim Kardashian Says She Had to ‘Learn How’ to Not Be ‘So Independent’ After Marrying Kanye West

Kim Kardashian Says She Had to ‘Learn How’ to Not Be ‘So Independent’ After Marrying Kanye West.

“I think being with a man like Kanye, you have to learn how to be a little bit not-so-independent,” the 38-year-old reality star dished during the Sunday, October 21, episode of the Alec Baldwin Show. “I’ve always been so independent, and working, and [had a] schedule, and when you get married and have a husband with a career and kids, your independence … you have to let it go. I had to learn that being with a man like Kanye.”

Kardashian noted that she lets “him be who he wants to be.” She continued: “I let him have his own views and opinions, even if they’re different than mine.”

The Selfish author also revealed that her once immense craving for attention dwindled down when she tied the knot to the 41-year-old rapper in May 2014.

“We’d get our hair and makeup done filming,” Kardashian said of taping Keeping Up With the Kardashians. “When we’d be done I’d was like, ‘What is the hottest restaurant Hollywood? Where can I go? Where can I be seen?’”

She continued: “It started with Kanye … everything had to be public for me back then. And so I had to kind of flip it. Now, on my time off, I’m like, ‘Where are the locations that I can go eat, go on vacation, where no one will see us?’ All I want it privacy.”

Thomas Markle Is Happy Over Meghan Markle’s Pregnancy

While some wondered how the somewhat estranged Thomas Markle would respond to hearing the news of his daughter’s pregnancy, Markle said that he was filled with “joy, love, and happiness” in an interview with the Daily Mail. He found out while he was listening to his favorite radio show, Red Eye Radio, who interrupted their scheduled program in order to congratulate “America’s favorite royals.”

“I was sitting in line waiting to cross the border when I heard the baby announcement on the car radio,” Markle exclusively told the Mail. “The first thing I thought about was holding Meghan in my arms as a newborn 37 years ago. I thought, ‘My baby is having a baby.'”

This marks Thomas Markle’s first interview since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s pregnancy was announced. During his talk with the Daily Mail he reminisced about the birth of Meghan, who was born in Canoga Park hospital on August 4th of 1981. “It was in the middle of the night when Meghan was born by caesarean section. Doria was sleeping and so I was the first person in the world to hold Meghan.”

Kensington Palace was the first to announce of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s pregnancy. Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, was very excited to welcome her first grandchild. It’s believed that Ragland will be relocating to the UK in order to help care for the baby.

For his part, Thomas Markle is only saying positive things about his daughter and her marriage despite the intense scrutiny and presence of the paparazzi. “She’s always been wonderful with children and most of her friends have families so she’s used to being around kids. She will make a fantastic mother.”

How Would Marijuana-Fed Pigs Taste

The myriad conversations regarding cannabis ethics tend to focus on legalization, medicinal benefits and expungement reparations to past victims from the War on Drugs. We believe in expungement clinics, or prioritizing exclusive licenses for people of color in the industry. Because of the pressing politics inherent in these issues, they tend to dominate any media noise regarding cannabis.

But what about sustainability? Though Canada’s legalization of adult-use cannabis is worthy of applause, the government also requires the industry to destroy tons of waste that’s created in cannabis production. This is not good. Canadian growers have bemoaned the lost opportunity, citing T-shirts, animal feed, and juices as possibilities from the waste byproduct.

On a recent episode of Eater’s YouTube series “Prime Time,” hosts Brent and Ben showcase how sustainable cannabis practices can provide feed to animals, like pigs. Moto Perpetuo Farm in Forest Grove, Oregon raises its swine on cannabis, making up about 20-25 percent of their diet. (And no, the pigs don’t get high, nor will eating them get you high either. These pigs are not edibles.)

But how does that affect the taste of the animal? Vitaley Paley, the Chef and Owner at Imperial in Portland, cooks this pork at his restaurant. Executive Chef Matthew Jarrell sums it up nicely.

“For me it doesn’t really impart the flavor of cannabis or what we understand that flavor to be,” Jarrell says. “What I do taste is a healthier animal. It’s juicier pork, the texture is more resistant, there’s no mushiness involved whatsoever.”

Less waste and better tasting meat? That’s a win-win for everyone.

Is It Possible To Work Yourself To Death?

Americans have a work problem, crunching in more work hours than other first world countries such as Germany and Sweden. Working a lot sounds great in theory, but in reality is a complex problem. This trend of overworking is almost always accompanied by negative side effects and made worse by the fact that America has a notoriously bad track record with paid vacations, parental leave benefits, laws that prevent overwork, and more.

Popular Science reports that this belief that forces us to work like crazy without caring for our health has a hand in more than 150,000 U.S. deaths each year. The situation is worse in China, where a million deaths are influenced by overworking.

The book Dying for a Paycheck argues that this damaging work culture encourages sedentary lifestyles, insomnia, and stress, all factors that are a blow to your health. While jobs nowadays aren’t literally dangerous—most of us work from an office—they encourage long hours where we’re sitting down, exposed constantly to blue light and stress. The accessibility of our work also complicates matter further, never allowing us to fully separate ourselves from our jobs.

All of these factors damage our health, with The Guardian reporting that more than 13 hours of sitting down doubles our risk of mortality. There’s also a phenomenon called “karoshi” first seen in Japan, where workers literally drop dead from working overtime. A study from European Heart Journal also argues that your heart is particularly influenced by work stress, reporting findings that say that those who work for more than 10 hours a day are more likely to have heart problems than those who work 7 hours or less.

While we all need to look for ways to be more active in our work spaces and to find other activities that bring us some sort of joy, our work culture has to change and citizens need to be protected. There’s not a lot workers can do unless the laws change, and the people responsible take better care of their employees.

North Dakota Poll Sees Chance Of Passing Marijuana Legalization

North Dakota is not messing around when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. It was just two years ago that voters approved the herb for medicinal purposes. According to a new poll, there is now a distinct possibility that the people of the Roughrider State could legalize it for recreational use when they hit the ballot next month during the midterm election. But it’s going to be a close one.

Next month, voters in North Dakota will have to decide whether or not to support a proposal (Measure 3) aimed at legalizing a recreational cannabis market.

The gist of the suggested deal is that it would allow adults 21 and older the right to possess, use and grow marijuana while creating an automatic expungement process for those people with a cannabis-related conviction. As of now, 51 percent of the population is prepared to buy into this scheme, while 36 percent oppose.

But unlike marijuana legalization measures pushed through in other states, this one is unique in the way that it leaves the cannabis industry open to operate without regulatory controls. David Owen, who chairs the Measure 3 sponsoring committee, calls it a “wonderfully written” proposal, while people like Bob Wefald, a former state attorney general, who leads a group opposing the initiative, says it could be a “bad, bad law.”

There is concern that the measure will give way to a scene that is not even close to being considered acceptable by one of America’s most conservative states. However, the lack of a regulatory system would launch “free market capitalism,” allowing farmers to grow both hemp and marijuana, which would be great for the state’s economy, Owen told the Grand Forks Herald.

If Measure 3 gets pushed through, North Dakota would be home to one of the most liberal cannabis laws in the country. While the lack of regulations might seem strange, it could be becuase marijuana legalization in other parts of the nation comes with much stricter rules. However, Measure 3 would not be set in stone. It is likely that the State Legislature would step in after its passage and fix what some are calling a “poorly written” proposal. That is what happened after the voters approved a statewide medical marijuana program back in 2016.

“We took something that was infinitely worse—as far as how it was written—infinitely worse than the full legalization measure, and we still made it work, and we can do the same thing with this measure,” said State Representative Rick Becker of Bismarck, who says he will support Measure 3 at the polls.

Unfortunately, due to the state’s interference in medical marijuana, not a single patient has been given access. That system is not expected to be up and running until 2019.

But to get a recreational marijuana law on the books in North Dakota, the poll finds that younger people must show up to vote.

“Passage of Measure 3 is greatly dependent upon the voters under the age of 50 voting in at least their historical percentages,” The Kitchens Group wrote in a polling memo. “If the electorate is skewed toward the older, more conservative voters, passage could be problematic.”

A City In Texas Is Allowing People To Test Out Self-Driving Cars

The city of Arlington, Texas plans on becoming one of the first cities that tests out self-driving cars, encouraging tourists and residents to take a trip aboard their brightly colored smart vehicles.

Starting October 26th, three Drive.ai self-driving vehicles will be available for rides around town. This trial period will last for a year, with the company planning on increasing the amount of cars from three to five and giving out rides to all sorts of passengers who are interested in the technology.

In order to test out these vehicles, people must download the Driver.ai app and order a car from one of the five different pick up points located around the city. Cars have three routes that visit important tourist spots such as the Dallas Cowboys stadium, the Texas Rangers ballpark, restaurant areas, and more.

While the cars are controlled by AI, there will be a back up driver in the pilot seat and a “chaperone” in the passenger seat who’ll keep an eye on things and make sure that everything looks safe. The AI car has several digital panels installed that explain to passengers, pedestrians, and other cars on the road what the vehicle’s next move is going to be.

Mashable reports that these cars are very easy to identify, painted in bright blue and orange colors, with CEO Bijit Halder claiming that “self-driving cars should stand out and proclaim themselves as self-driving cars.”

The purpose of these rides is safety and convenience; Halder believes that if passengers are bored and safe while on their ride, then he’s done his job.
