Our 4 Favorite Weirdly Cool Tech Gadgets From CES 2018

CES is the world’s largest consumers electronics event. The convention, taking place right now in Las Vegas, is the largest gathering of electronics in the world and it includes a little bit of everything; medical equipment, incredibly cool TVs, a million different wireless charging pads, and more.

This year, the event officially ends on Friday January 12th, but experts already know their favorites and which products are the most promising. No matter what electronic device you’re looking for, this year’s convention proves that it’s gonna be a good year for tech.

Check out 4 of our favorites products:

Samsung “The Wall” MicroLED TV

This small TV panel can be synced with its counterparts to create a giant screen that can be as big as the size of an entire wall, featuring impressive 4K resolution. This product has people very excited; Apple may be more famous when it comes to their phones, but Samsung is the number #1 seller of TVs in the world.

Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector

This projector will carry a price tag of 30,000 dollars on the moment of its release and even though the price is absurd, the product is like nothing else on the market. The projector is designed to look like modern furniture, blending into your house, and is meant to be located 9 inches from any wall projecting a screen that measures up to 120 inches diagonally. It also comes with a Glass Sound Speaker that produces 360 sound, meaning that you don’t have to buy anything else to have your own private theater.

FoldiMate

This little robot is capable of folding your clothes evenly and rapidly for the price of 980 dollars. If you’re a lazy person, this might be a sound investment. Actually, you don’t even have to be lazy, folding clothes is the worst.

Sony’s Aibo

This robotic dog was first launched a decade ago but no one paid any mind to it. Now that AI seems to be on everyone’s mind, Sony decided to relaunch it, improving its features that now include the ability for the pet robot dog to recognize its owner and deepen its relationship with them. It also has a camera, is backed up by cloud storage, and is 4G and LTE enabled.

Want To Work In The Cannabis Industry? This California City Is Hiring

Greenfield counts itself among the most forward-thinking cannabis-friendly cities in the state and now it’s inviting cannabis industry workers to the city. Greenfield announced this week that it’s recruiting for hundreds of new jobs in the booming medical marijuana business.

Greenfield is partnering with its local medical marijuana industry to create an employment bank that will be hosted on the city’s website. The bank will serve as a means for “residents of Greenfield interested in employment opportunities in this emerging industry [to] ‘bank’ their employment materials in multiple formats and wait for a return on their investment.” The bank will then be shared with industry partners who will then be paired with viable Greenfield candidates.

“We’re going to capture positions for the citizens of Greenfield, which is what the council intended when they jumped on this opportunity a couple years back. It’s time to bring this to fruition,” city manager Jaime Fontes told ABC 13.

“It also creates ripple opportunities for contractors, subcontractors, material men, restaurants, hotels, all the other industries that will make money from the ripple effect of this industry.”

The city will not directly hire employees or contractors, but instead serve as a conduit between interested workers and the cannabis industry. Greenfield posted a list of positions they’re already looking for, including budtenders, soil techs, accountants, events planners and more.

“I’m told in the 70s we were only a few thousand people, now we’re almost 19,000 people. When you’re growing that fast in the Hispanic population, there’s a lot of lower income folks, you want to create economic opportunities at every level,” Fontes said.

Gossip: Meghan Markle Breaks Royal Protocol Again; How Brad Pitt Is Staying Sober

On Tuesday, for her first public appearance with Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle wore her hair in a messy bun – what is actually a break of royal protocol.

It’s frowned upon when royal women wear red nail polish or cross their legs, and there’s an entire in-palace team of hairstylists they’re supposed to use.

So, Meghan’s choice to let her hair down, so to speak, really shows just what a breath of fresh air she’ll be as a royal.

How Brad Pitt Is Staying Sober

The operation is handled with the utmost discretion. A few times a week, Brad Pitt waits in his beloved Craftsman home in the Hollywood Hills as SUVs descend to deliver precious cargo: any or all of his six kids.

Though a Pitt insider notes the actor lives “just down the street” from his ex and the children’s mother, Angelina Jolie, “it’s never Brad or Angie that does the handoff. It’s always the bodyguards and nannies.” And as soon as papa Pitt takes over care of Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 11, or twins Knox and Vivienne, 9, he settles the brood in for some quality time. “Brad doesn’t go out much with the kids or leave the house,” the source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. “He prefers to keep things very private and safe.”

That’s his whole philosophy these days. Following his shocking split from Jolie, 42, in September 2016, the actor “lives a quiet life and spends a lot of time at his home,” says the source. “It’s his sanctuary and just being there is where he finds peace.” The Ad Astra star, 54, continuously creates more zen there, notes the source: “He has projects around the house and is always making things or changing things around.”

Pitt, who gave up drinking following his divorce, has also committed himself to therapy. “He goes to therapy every week and is mostly interested in learning and bettering himself as a man and father,” the source tells Us.

When he’s not on dad duty, Pitt has been enjoying reconnecting with old friends including Fight Club director David Fincher and his longtime makeup artist Jean Black. Says the source, “They’ve always been loyal to him and were there for him when the marriage ended.” He’s also having a great time getting back into two of his biggest hobbies: art and music. “He visits galleries and goes to a lot of concerts.”

Treasury Agency Befuddled By Jeff Sessions’ Latest Anti-Cannabis Move

When Jeff Sessions rescinded the Cole memo, a policy that staved law enforcement from raiding compliant cannabis operations in legal states, he neglected to first alert the Treasury agency of the news. The memo had addressed banking procedures, stating that if the financial institution believed the organization to be legitimate, they could do business with them.

So what about now?

According to Reuters, around 400 banks currently work within the marijuana economy, most of them smaller and confined to the states where they do business. Calls came rolling into the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which is under the US Treasury Department umbrella, mostly from congress persons, wondering how best to serve their constituents.

It remains to be seen what will happen next. Cannabis is still a Schedule I drug on the federal level, making it technically illegal despite states’ rights. As far as the feds are concerned, weed is in the same category as heroin, a placement that infers no medicinal value and a high rate of abuse.

Currently, 30 states plus Washington DC have passed laws that legalize marijuana, either for recreational or medicinal use. That’s a lot of constituents to worry about, most of whom have already made their voices heard via ballot or petition.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has a hardcore anti-cannabis stance. Last year he formed a committee in order to find harm in cannabis, with less-than-tepid results. It looks like this year he’s looking to further stir the pot with his Cole memo rescindment.

Reuters also reported that The Justice Department declined comment on the oversight of reporting to FinCEN about the decision before announcing it. Embarrassed much? Though Jeff Sessions clearly wants cannabis to go away and is playing chess with the pieces he has on the board, but so far his policy shift hasn’t prompted any crackdowns, knock wood.

When FinCEN gave their recommendations to banks in 2014, one year after the Cole memo was issued, they required that banks report suspicious activity, but advised that if a business was above board they could make the decision whether or not to do business with them. Let’s just hope the next issued advice is at least that permissive.

Is New York Gearing Up To Be The Next State To Legalize Marijuana?

The New York State Assembly Standing Committees on Codes, Health, and Alcohol and Drug Abuse on Thursday will convene a public hearing to discuss the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, a bill that would legalize the production, distribution, and use of marijuana for adults over the age of 21. This bill would effectively end marijuana prohibition in New York State and would create a system to tax and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol.

Increasingly, jurisdictions and legislators across the country are realizing that marijuana prohibition has been ineffective, unjust, and disproportionately enforced and are working to implement regulatory systems that are fair and effective. A poll of New York voters released in late 2017 showed that 62% of New Yorkers support making marijuana use legal in New York for adults over 21, and more than 60% support taxing and regulating marijuana as a way to address the state’s looming budget deficit.

The Assembly hearing comes on the heels of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinding the Cole memo, which previously instructed the Department of Justice to allow states to implement their own marijuana laws with limited federal interference.

Thursday’s Assembly hearing will feature testimony calling for an end to marijuana prohibition in New York from a broad spectrum of advocates, including representatives from civil rights, criminal justice reform, medical researchers and doctors, regulators from states with legal marijuana, medical marijuana advocates, policing experts, immigration rights advocates, former law enforcement, and drug policy reform. Representatives from the Start SMART NY campaign (SMART stands for Sensible Marijuana Access through Regulated Trade), a coalition that supports ending marijuana prohibition in New York, will testify at the hearing.

The ongoing marijuana arrest crusade has led to more than 800,000 people being arrested for possession of small amounts of marijuana in New York State over the past 20 years, with over 700,000 arrests by the NYPD alone. On average, 60 New Yorkers are arrested every day for marijuana possession, making marijuana possession one of the top arrests in the state. Although drug use and drug selling occur at similar rates across racial and ethnic groups, Black and Latino individuals are arrested for possessing marijuana at vastly disproportionate rates. In 2016, more than 85% of all those arrested for marijuana possession were Black and Latino; nearly 70% of those arrested were under 30 years old; and over a third were under 21 years old.

“New York’s marijuana arrest crusade has resulted in significant harms for those who are most vulnerable and has been used as a justification for the hyper-policing of communities of color, funneling tens of thousands of New Yorkers into the maze of the criminal justice system every year and putting people at risk of deportation, losing custody of their children, and barring them from employment and housing for nothing more than possessing small amounts of marijuana,” said Kassandra Frederique, New York State Director for the Drug Policy Alliance. “As New York finally sheds its embarrassing distinction of being the marijuana arrest capital of the world, we must repair the harms of prohibition and end the biased policing practices that have ruined the lives of so many young Black and Latino New Yorkers. Ultimately, the best way to address the disparities and challenges posed by prohibition is to legalize and regulate marijuana in New York.”

Vermont Senate Passes Bill To Legalize Cannabis In The State

On Wednesday, Vermont’s state legislature became the first in the nation to vote for a bill legalizing recreational marijuana. Republican Gov. Phil Scott indicated last month that he would sign the bill if it arrived on his desk.

All eight of the previous states to legalize cannabis did so via the ballot initiative led directly by voters. Vermont on Wednesday broke the mold and demonstrated the swift current of legalization movement in America. Vermont is one of 23 states that do not allow citizens to present ballot measures directly to voters.

The Democratic-controlled Senate passed the measure by voice vote a week after the Democratic-controlled House voted in favor of the bill.

“This is a big step forward for Vermont,” said Matt Simon, New England political director for the Marijuana Policy Project, a pro-legalization organization. “Vermonters should be proud that their state is becoming the first to do this legislatively, rather than by ballot initiative.”

The Vermont law allows adults (21 years and older) to possess up to one ounce of marijuana, two adult plants and four immature plants beginning on July 1. Retail sales will not be allowed until a commission releases recommendations on how to tax and regulate the products.

Massachusetts, Maine and six other states have legalized marijuana use as a result of voter initiatives. New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut are also moving quickly toward legalization. If all of New England becomes a legal cannabis zone, New York will be pressured to act.

According to a 2017 survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, 57% of Vermont adults support legalization for adults. Only 39% expressed opposition.

Vermont’s vote is a rebuke of last week’s announcement from Attorney General Jeff Sessions that the Obama-era policy offering legal shelter for state-sanctioned cannabis sales is over.

Want To Know How Marijuana Can Reverse Aging?

“Free radicals” is a buzzword in our contemporary conversation how to reverse aging. The term refers to atoms, or clusters of atoms, that contain unpaired electrons in their outermost shells. These atoms are desperate to complete themselves and are therefore constantly on the look out for an electron to grab on to. [Insert smug and offensive joke about your single friends here].

The danger of free radicals is that they can damage every part of our cells—from the fatty outer membranes, to internal mitochondrial proteins, to the innermost DNA—and even induce cell death. Moreover, free radicals create more free radicals, as denuded molecules look for new targets in a self-perpetuating chain of electron theft.

We produce free radicals naturally as a byproduct of various organic processes. But the real threat comes from external sources, because there are so many things in modern life that can generate free radicals. The list includes nice things—like alcohol, fried foods, and sunshine—and not so nice things—like pesticides, air pollution, and medications.

Our knowledge of free radicals is fairly young, so we don’t really know how much harm we can reliably assign to them. However, there is evidence that these electron thieves have a role in inciting cancer, kidney and heart disease, diabetes, and neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s. One theory of aging even puts the onus squarely on free radicals (and that’s an onus nobody wants to touch).

Oxygen: Can’t Live With It; Can’t Live Without It

People who are learned in the way of science know that a more sophisticated term for “stealing an electron” is “oxidation.” So what we call “free-radical damage,” the know-it-alls call “oxidative stress.” They also prefer to call “free radicals” “ROS,” because that stands for “reactive oxygen species,” which sounds super smart. It’s also accurate, because most free radicals contain oxygen, the element that clings most tenaciously to its electrons.

And that is why “antioxidants” has become another buzzword of our contemporary discourse about health and aging. Antioxidants give freely of their electrons, thus neutralizing (literally) free radicals. Antioxidants can be found in boring things—like carrots, cabbage, and kale—and exciting things—like a muscular red bordeaux. Or cannabis.

So, Smoke Weed And Never Age. The End. Right?

Wish life were that simple!

It turns out that under deeper scrutiny free radicals/ROS do not appear to be an unalloyed evil. In fact, there’re more of a necessary evil.

Earlier this year, the Royal Society (an organization that’s so legit, its list of former presidents includes Sir Isaac Newton) published an overview of the relationship between the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and ROS. The relationship is, to say the least, complicated.

Far from being simply free-roving poisons bent on our destruction, ROS are, in fact, “key signalling intermediaries” that help regulate some mightily important functions, including cell growth, proliferation, and death. Interestingly, these are processes that the ECS also has a hand in, and so the two parties regularly interact. Rather than being implacable, self-canceling foes, then—electron-grabbing ROS marauders facing down antioxidant cannabinoid superheroes—ROS and the ECS are more precisely understood as engaging in elaborate and ongoing “crosstalk.”

Under normal circumstances, there is an entente cordiale between the two parties which maintains a very delicate “redox homeostasis”—a continually re-jiggered balance between oxidation and anti-oxidation that allows healthy cells to flourish but encourages damaged and dysfunctional ones to kill themselves before they cause real mischief, such as by turning cancerous. (The technical term for this cell suicide is “apoptosis.”)

It’s true, however, that the free radicals do occasionally get out of hand, and then the ECS must take them out. But while ROS can damage pretty much anything they want to—muscles, organs, nerves, skin cells—we don’t know whether cannabis can fix all of that.

In biomedical research, the devil is in the details. And sorting through the details is devilishly hard. According to the Royal Society overview, the cannabinoids THC and CBC have been shown to protect the brain, kidney, and heart from oxidative stress. But is says nothing, for example, about the skin, which is probably what comes first to mind when we think of aging.

So what’s the quick takeaway? It is clear that we are still in the “basic science” phase, but it’s not too early to conclude that elements of the ECS are “potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of oxidative stress-related neurological, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.” That could have major ramifications for improving human health and extending longevity. But if it’s a fountain of eternal youth you’re looking for, keep looking.

This Guy Really Wants To Be The DJ At Meghan Markle And Prince Harry’s Wedding

On Tuesday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were seen visiting Reprezent 107.3, completing Markle’s second public royal duty. The purpose of their visit was to see how the station is working to create social change and to positively influence London’s youth.

They got to wear the station’s headphones, and chat with the station’s young DJs, one of whom handed Harry his business card, saying “DJ at the wedding, DJ at the wedding.”

Prince Harry’s expression says it all.

PEOPLE reports that station manager Adrian Newman wanted to ask the couple a few questions, to which Harry pointed at Meghan and said that she’d answer all of them. The former actress said that she’d answer the questions when talking about gender equality.

Markle is an outspoken feminist, having experience with U.N Women, and advocating for girls around the world through World Vision Canada.
